Heroica RPG - Quest #53: Chaos in Eubric
Waterbrick Down replied to Zepher's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Not sure if he can or not. Also, Zepher, I noted that you forgot to take Skrall's encouragement status into his role, so he should have done 14 damage. Hans looked confusidly at Skrall, clenched his fists and swung a right hook at the beast of life, "Here goes nothing." -
Weapons are one of the major drops in RPG games, and I think a boss battle that drops a high level weapon is entirely legitamite. However I agree with Scuba that it makes all of his pouring gold into another weapon pretty obsolete. However this happens on a smaller scale as well. As a ranger, I have to save up for my equipment, but when something like a pair of winged sandels just shows up in an enemy drop, well then I just wasted saving up my money for something that I could just defeat an enemy for. You could spend your entire gaming career waiting for that perfect drop and refusing to upgrade anything else, or you can choose the certainty of having excellent equipment with you when you want it. It's a trade off. Aside from missing his characteristic Han Solo-esque holstered crossbow, I like him. Thanks MDM!

"Felton, Hans, yer with Haldor from the front." Skrall notched another arrow to the Bow and fired again at Wren. -
Second time round. I aimed for more of a strict 1:1 conversion from Lego. I'm still not satisfied, but it's getting better. I challenge you MDM to give this one a go. And I must say, there are some real quality quest going on right now amongst our newer QM's and players.

I agree with CMP, I think when people first create their character they aim for a class that is really cool or one that they can relate more easily too. It's around the time they hit advanced classes that they figure out how hand clerics really are. I've got a secondary/re-roll character made up for each of the classes, all from non-major races, and while I like my cleric, I really really like my knight and would play him if there weren't so many of them already in the hall.

"In deed we will." Skrall let loose his shot. -

"Even principles can be wrong Arthur. I do not deny, you wish good for this city, yet you attempt to bring it about in a way that cannot be accomplished. Wren, for all of her effort in attempting to bring the beauty of chaos to the world will fail. She cannot superceed Zoot, twist his power and everything he stands for to her own bidding, she can only become another image of who he is. I hope that one day you will learn this, please now stand aside." Skrall knocked an arrow to his bow and took aim at Wren from the back row. "Felton, Hans, take care of that last chaos beast (K) from the back row." -
Can you use the edit function?

To both of you, KingoftheZempk and LordoftheNoobs, I bid you welcome! Nice to see a new mage in the recent influx of knights, rangers, and rogues.

Oh, that court battle.

Heroica RPG - Quest #53: Chaos in Eubric

Skrall sighed, he remembered when he had first gotten to know the young mage, even then he had noted his countenance of misery. The pain, the betrayal, the hounding, and persecution had come too early and too often upon the young man's shoulder and soul. Skrall spoke quietly, yet with firmness. "Arthur, you speak of things you do not completely understand, things that none of us comprehend in their entirety, not even Wren. She will not stop, nigh she cannot stop even if she wished to. Eubric, the people you love, the world, will all devolve into the void. She is but a mortal attempting to turn the very fabric of nature upon its head, even she cannot succeed. Some things no matter even if we attained godhood could we alter. I know what it is you wish, but it is a thing that cannot be. Yes for a moment it may appear that your deepest desires have come true, but they cannot last. You speak of good, yet what good is there in a world in which goodness itself may vary it's appearance or display simply in obedience to the whim of ones such as we or even Wren. I know what I am, I am not good, my failings are many, my weaknesses deep, and my inadequacy great, I have never been one for lofty morals or mindless bigotry, but even I can not change my deeds into something they are not, just as Wren and you cannot change the nature of that which you wish to control. No Arthur, I do not hate you, but I bid you caution in aligning yourself with that which cannot last or be." "Haldor, stay your blade. It takes many years and many trials, to become content with the way the world is. Slake your anger upon Wren, she has chosen her path to the uttermost and we must ensure the end of her path does not come to pass." -
You do realize that was 7 months ago right.
-
See that's all Arthur needed to say in the beginning.
-
That settles it, Skrall is going into the business of floor and divinity extermination.

It's not that bringing those uncomfortable truths up is a bad thing and I applaud the people that bring us quests that makes us consider deeper concepts, it's just that not everyone is looking for Heroica to be their philosophical outlet, so don't be surprised if people don't feel sympathy for the guy that wants to discuss it and face it, even if they did, I'm sure there would be characters and players (as there are now) who simply do not agree with you. Can we go back to stabbing and looting things now.

Realistically role-playing conflict can be one of the most difficult challenges of a game like this. Because we are all so spread apart, only post a few times a day, we never have a chance to really "feel" for another player, at least that's how I perceive it. It usually takes a good back and forth session of conversation for me to feel like Skrall really cares about someone, instead of WBD caring about achieving the objective of the quest whilest allowing for some adequate role-play. Also, we're touching on subjects that people generally have pretty firmly held beliefs on: truth, relativism, black and white, gray, right and wrong, morals, ethics, etc. and it is difficult to not have those influence the way you interact with people in the game. In the end not everyone is going to agree, with their fellow characters, PC's, or even QM's when it comes to these issues. My final point is, it's not that Arthur is unsympathetic, it is you are dealing with issues that most people don't want to spend the time hashing out, point by point, in a forum RPG. The game wasn't designed for that, and while some of it is okay in game, we need to be careful not to let it become all about that, there are other places for such discussions.

We just don't all attack her at once, we've got a dragon and a few phoenix essences left, so we'll be fine.

OoC: Skall was also hastened and according to Wren's special I can choose which effect to lose and I'd prefer to lose hastened over encouraged. Skrall smirked as the arrow burried itself in Wren. "Fina... Sod her!" Again the dark witch had robbed him of his goal. The ogre snarled, knocking another arrow to his composite bow and taking aim at the Chaos Beast of Death from the back of the party. Best to finish him off first and then start at her again. "Felton, Hans, yer with me from the front." -
So if I want to have some delusional rats in my next quest be flying/undead/humanoid type because they label themselves as that, we're alright huh? I just think you're upset about Skrall favoring ancient and didn't want him blasting Wren like he did Chaos.

What ever happened to "no fighting gods".

Hey, you work with what you've got.
-
I agree and I like the idea of the honing stones. I think finding new ways of using the existing mechanics is often the best way of making sure everyone stays happy.

Just in case you were wondering: So is anyone planning on hosting besides myself for when the Wren questers return?

OoC: Oh I get it, 4 of us get a Chaos Beast to keep as a pet, right? There I go thinking the QM's out to get us again. "Bring him down Atramor, bring him down!" -

OoC: Why aren't we arguing about this in character? "Atramor, you finish Chaos off. Cronk and I will back ya up if he turns nasty. Hoke, deal with whatever witchery I'm sure is waitin' in wait for us afterwards."
