LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion
Darth Caedus replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Lego thankfully has enough lead time to shift TABA sets to Dec. 2014 and produce something to fill the summer gap - I would not be surprised if it's only a couple LOTR sets, but another wave of 4 would be more than satisfactory. A Gondorian battlepack would be the be-all end-all of reality, but Eowyn vs the Witchking with an affordable fellbeast would be suitable. As long as it's not just more Gimlis, Frodos and hairless 'mordor orcs.'- 7,499 replies

This theme simply does not have a single bad set. The Cavalry builder, teepee and stagecoach will probably all be purchases. If I had more spare dough, I might spring for the silver mine too.

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion
Darth Caedus replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
New blurays don't have that price differential anymore. It's often under 5 dollars or less - for instance, the Game of Thrones season 2 dvd was available on Amazon for 24.99, and the dvd + bluray combo pack for 29.99. It used to be a much larger difference, but that's not really the case anymore. I have no intention of upgrading my entire collection, but for new films that I care about, bluray is the way to go.- 7,499 replies

That's the only way to get a proper Elven cloak for Frodo. And Shelob itself is a superb model - that's one of the best-value sets they've put out on the Tolkien line. Really? I can understand some people's disinterest in the Black Ship - it's a tad price-padded and doesn't exactly fit in with a lot of the other sets. However, the Black Gate has excellent new characters and is a superb price-to-piece ratio - 59.99 for 650+ pieces is surprising and welcome. I will be buying two to make a proper Black Gate.- 7,499 replies

Hopefully some unscrupulous photographer leaks a few snaps anonymously. But honestly, I'm fine with any description and confirmation of Orthanc for the time being. Most of us are going to buy all the sets, so what's the point in waiting with bated breath?- 7,499 replies

No reason to waste a UCS slot on that. Make a Sammath Naur set for 60ish, with a gate and small cliff inside, plus the minifigs you mentioned. Keep the UCS/big slot for something more deserving. How sick would it be to get a Cirith Ungol? Minas Morgul is too big, but Cirith Ungol has all the elements of a great Lego castle - cool gate, big tower, walls and keep that don't need to be 100$ movie accurate. -

No. There are no minifigs really associated with Barad-Dur and it's ratherly vaguely defined. It would be a waste of a UCS set - better to give us something like the Golden Hall of Meduseld. -

If it's UCS style, I doubt it. Especially since Saruman and Gandalf can be obtained cheaply. I'd prefer them to maximize the size and any interior detailing, and throw in some useful minifigs like Grima and armored Lurtz.- 7,499 replies

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion
Darth Caedus replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
A few thoughts: -Saruman's robes cover his legs 99.9% of the time, leg printing is not really needed -Arwen is not in her Ford of Bruinen costume here (as wesker asked), this is closer to her gown in the Rivendell departure scene. -Gandalf the White usually has heavy robes too -Agree about Elrond and the dead, but it's a minor quibble. -Hands are an easy swap, seems like they were trying for variety. But green is best, true. My own reactions: -Orcs are pathetic rehashes, and should have hairpieces, but beside the fact that they replace slots that could've been given to other figures, I'm not that disappointed. We'll get a ton of more Orcs/Goblins in TABA sets. -They're milking the Gimli mold for all its worth, but it's alright I suppose. -Umbar corsair looks great. -Oathbreakers are spectacular and a great quirky addition to the lineup. -Aragorn Elessar looks great, right out of the movie. -Elrond and Arwen deftly use a new hairpiece, and it's a smart move. Can be reused for Thranduil in TDOS sets. Elrond looks great, and I won't mind having him despite already owning the superior gamestop version. -Saruman and Gandalf the White look great, Saruman especially. Can't wait to recreate The Voice Of Saruman scene if the Isengard set becomes a reality. -The absolute standout figure of the wave, and easily the best yet made in the line is the exquisite Mouth of Sauron. Without a doubt one of the grimmest, most austere minifigs Lego has ever produced, they captured his helmet and evil grin perfectly, as well as the dark aesthetic of the Black Numenorean robes. If I really, really had to choose between him and a Witchking figure, I'd take the Mouth in a second - his design is wonderfully unique and despite my irritation at the lack of Gondorians, I am extremely proud of Lego for prioritizing such an obscure, dark character to be produced.- 7,499 replies

A White Ship w/ dock would be the perfect way to finish the line, indeed. Gandalf the White, departure garb Frodo, Galadriel, Elrond, and Old Bilbo. -
The first Hobbit movie has the lowest amount of high-impact sets, as well. Bag End is iconic but still fundamentally a peaceful display set (despite the fact I have wargs attacking mine, lol). A set with Smaug for the TDOS movie, with hopefully the best Lego dragon ever made? That'll be a heck of a set and truly impressive. And the hype around the third film as the absolute end of the film franchise will inspire additional interest.

Agreed. And with the lack of Corsairs, I'll happy crew it with the various Orcs and Goblins we've gotten thus far - having the goblin scribe at the helm would be quite funny for some reason.- 7,499 replies

Leo, Narwhal, thanks for the posts. Lordof theBricks, nobody's "spreading hate" - the rampant wild mass guessing and bravado don't have any place in this thread. We're just here to reflect and speculate on the hard evidence - like the latest Corsair ship pics. I reiterate the earlier sentiments about the big three being included in the Corsair ship - the iconic shot of them charging towards the Orcs can't really lose any of them. I still don't have a Legolas, and only one Aragorn and Gimli. Should it have an extra Oathbreaker/Corsair? Sure, but we'll survive.- 7,499 replies

Lordof theBricks, you are being a bit childish in your demands of the Lego corp. Releasing Yazneg on a White Warg is hardly a giant "mistake" that needs to be fixed posthaste - The shift to 3 movies happened in Aug/Sept 2013, well after Lego's production cycle had been underway for the sets for An Unexpected Journey. There's a grey warg you can put Yazneg on in the same set, in any case. Criticisms of Lego continually putting out fellowship characters in the same forms and without capes are fine, but calling the developers "screw ups" is unfair - we've all watched the developer videos and seen the care and attention these designers put into the sets and minifigs. They handled the shift from 2 to 3 movies as best they could, and ultimately it's for the best - we'll get an Azog in either The Desolation of Smaug wave or the There And Back Again wave, so as was said earlier, we'll have *both* Yazneg and Azog *and* his white warg. As TFOLs and AFOLs, we share your enthusiasm for Lego LOTR and The Hobbit - there's no need for undue criticism of circumstances that are out of Lego's control. Better to direct constructive criticism towards future waves. And speaking of the future, please, nobody take into account the rumormongering about "lego LOTR doing terrible because my totally reliable buddy told me at some convention." All that does is waste posts and time on useless worrying. We've been through this before time and again. Sketchy, unconfirmed statements are really not worth fretting about. Oh, and Basteq was correct. It's technically *3* sets that were from the next movie - Barrel Escape, Mirkwood Spiders, and the Mirkwood Elf Guard polybag.- 7,499 replies

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion
Darth Caedus replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Star Wars is full of iconic vehicles that they can keep re-hashing for kids year after year after year. X-Wing, Tie fighters, the Falcon, Jedi starfighters, Slave I... LOTR has locations which are iconic and epic for the hardcore fans - Minas Tirith, Helm's Deep, etc. - but don't have the same power to fly off the shelves in the way Star Wars stuff can do. Case in point: let's say they release a rework of Helm's Deep in 2015. The hardcore fans rage, and the kids largely skip it, because there are no movies out to support interest. There are no more exclusive or attractive minifigs to make the hardcore base be interested. We do underestimate the intelligence of kids, but not their attention spans - for the vast majority, those are short as a goldfish. But contrast - they release a Slave I in 2006 and then in 2010. There's a price bloat, the first set was perfectly satisfactory - but kids gotta have that awesome ship, and the hardcores often will take the plunge because with Star Wars, Lego can toss in some attractive new minifigures and snare the collectors. Furthermore, at least half the line or more since 2008 has been powered by the Clone Wars. This will continue for 2 more years. The new movies will sustain it, starting in 2015. Now, LOTR is a powerful brand. I think the doomsayers who claim the line with the Summer '14 wave are overly pessimistic. We could see two more full waves after that, and then some exclusives and UCS the year after that - maybe even into 2016. But saying that it'll last for 10 years is supremely unrealistic. Let's focus on what priorities remain for the line: Fellbeast, Eowyn, Gondorians, Faramir, Haradrim, etc. Hope for the important stuff, and nothing beyond that. Worst case scenario - you're pleasantly surprised when we get something awesome and obscure like The Mouth Of Sauron.- 7,499 replies

Don't get your hopes up. We'll get what we get, but by the end of 2015 at the latest, this line will be out of steam. Star Wars has a tv show and countless new movies coming out. Tolkien will be out of theaters in a year and a half.- 7,499 replies

Exactly. I'm sad there's no Gondorians too, but the Mouth of Sauron could only ever appear in this set, and it's a wonder that we are getting him at all. I love Gondorians, but I am patient: I highly doubt that Lego is going to release nothing in the Winter of 2014/2015 when every sane kid is going to be tweaking for more Tolkien legos. If we have to keep waiting for them, so be it. The major battles of Return of the King seem unlikely to be completely ignored before the license fades out - Gondorians can appear in any set pertaining to Osgiliath or Minas Tirith, and I find it very unlikely that we won't get the iconic Eowyn vs. Witch-king scene eventually. So for the time being, I am extremely glad they gave us the obscure King of the Dead and Oathbreaker pieces, as well as the King of the Dead, all in one wave. It's a wonder we have Lego LOTR at all - I'm an atheist and I'll be the first to say, count your blessings and stop whining about Old Gloin. If I have any complaint about Rivendell it's that we should have gotten Bruinen instead, for more mounted Nazgul and an action-mode Arwen. The only reason we didn't is because a ford is boring to build, and Lego can't put a hobbit and an elf on one horse - gotta acknowledge the limitations of Lego, unfortunately. I'll probably end up giving Arwen blue pants and be happy with that- 7,499 replies

Osgiliath is best suited to a battlepack, not a large set, because its terrain is random and not memorable. Options: "Star Wars Style" $12.99-14.99: Gondorian Warrior, Gondorian Archer, Orc Archer, Orc Soldier, Ruined Archway "Helm's Deep Style" $29.99: Faramir, 2x Gondorian Warrior, Gondorian Ranger, Orc Archer, Orc Soldier, Ruined Archway/rubble & Landing Craft- 7,499 replies

Given that Bag End is the hot toy for Christmas this year, it makes sense that with the final Hobbit film in 2014, they'll have a December wave of LOTR and/or Hobbit to ride the Christmas hype - or, perhaps, a January one, if they think their summer '14 sets will be enough to sell for Christmas.- 7,499 replies
