yup - kind of weird that they're already available in Denmark. We are used to wait for so long compared to LEGO release dates in for example the US
-
Wow - I remember those. I'm Danish, so I can read that magazine. The Black Seas Barracuda is called "Hajtand" which means "Sharks Tooth" :) I never knew that. It's quite interesting to see the Danish names of those sets. Me too - I wanted all the sets so badly. I still want the BSB. I have the SES, but I'd rather have the BSB because it looks much better. I have the rest of the 1989 line. I stopped getting LEGO at the age of 13 (around 1993) or so - and entered my dark ages a few years later. I'm glad I'm back now, and my daughter loves all my old Pirate sets. I'm getting her the Pirates Advent Calendar this christmas
-
lol - I didn't know that :) What's a MISB SES worth compared to a MISB BSB - wow all those acronyms
-
BSB

that doesn't make me like the colours more

I had this set when I was a kid. But I recently checked peeron.com for the inventories list and I don't have many of those special parts anymore. The set is magnificent though I have the baseplate and many of the regular bricks, but the tap and phone are definitely gone, and so are many of the printed "police" bricks, the clear doors, and the green shudders :(
-
Wow - that looks absolutely stunning. I hope you get around to be buying all those parts someday
-
That is a great review. Well structured and great pictures I always wanted this ship because of the white hull pieces and the sails, but I really think that the general choice of colours in this set is strange, plus I miss a regular figurepiece :)
-
thanks for the comments :) I would love to be able to take better pictures with white backgrounds and great a light setup, but I don't have any good lamps, so instead I'm just fooling you all by photoshopping the pictures instead But I actually enjoy to read reviews that have sharp pictures of the different things in a set, with a white clean background.

Another Box Art thread, this time for the Cannon Battle. (I hope to see you guys make threads for some of the older big sets' boxes at some point) Front Back 1 Back, close up Sides This box shows perfectly what to expect from this set. Great graphics and pictures :) The back shows all the accessories and features of the set, which I really like. - I REALLY hope to see some new threads with the box art for some of the older Pirates sets. I've always wanted to see in depth pictures of the Black Seas Barracuda, Rock Island Refuge, Eldorado Fortress - you know all the big boxes. Please: If you have those boxes, take som pictures and make threads for it on eurobricks

It looks great. The thumbnails make me wanna click on all the reviews to read them (again) so I think I will. Maybe I'll add reviews for the 6235 Buried Treasure and 6245 Harbor Sentry :)

These are the weird mistakes and differences in the instruction manual for the 6239 Cannon Battle Notice his wrong head: Notice the white arms on the pirate: Notice his correct head:

It's been a while since I last did a review (my other ones being Skull's Eye Schooner and Rock Island Refuge ) This review will cover the very popular 1991 set Lagoon Lock-Up, Lagoon Lockup, or Soldier's Tavern 6267 - Lagoon Lockup Released: 1991 Pieces: 193 Minifgs: 5 Price: (according to peeron.com) $29 OVERVIEW THE REVIEW This set was probably one of my favourite sets as a kid. I loved the fact that it featured Will, Captain Redbeard's young friend, and I loved the rowing boat with the red and white sail. Fearless Captain Redbeard sets off to rescue his young friend Will, imprisoned in the Lagoon Lockup a few miles away from the Soldiers' main base, the Eldorado Fortress. Will Redbeard succeed, or will he fail miserably? Read my review, and see the pictures that tell the tale of Captain Redbeard's dangerous and selfless mission to save young Will. First things first: THE BOX (more pictures of the box with alternate models can be seen in this thread, concerning only the box art of this particular set) THE MANUAL The manual is pretty standard for this kind of set, and for time period. TLG has made a lot of positive changes to manuals today, which makes sets easier to build. This was not the case back then. I don't think this is a difficult set to build however, so kids would easily be able to enjoy this set. There are many guidelines throughout the manual, as you can see from the two pictures below. First page: Random page: THE ACCESSORIES You get a nice collection of weapons, a canon with six cannon balls, a brown rowing boat with a beautiful red and white sail. You also get a parrot, some wine glasses, a barrel and two flags. I also want to remind you, that the blue 32x16 base plate is great for building forts, islands and other piratey stuff. THE MINIFIGS You get 5 minifigs: 1 officer, 2 soldiers and 2 pirates: Captain Redbeard and his young friend Will. To give you a better view of this magnificent set, and an idea of the simple yet great design, here are some pictures from different angles. If you will bare with me for just a little longer, I'll let you know if Captain Redbeard manages to save young Will later in the review. LAGOON LOCKUP From the back: Notice the beautiful arches From the very top: Classic 90's Blue Coat architecture The prison: Behind the prison: Outside the small (but popular amongst soldiers) tavern: Behind the tavern: The weird angle: THE ESCAPE FROM LAGOON LOCKUP: The fearless and, at rare occasions, selfless Captain Redbeard sets sail from his beloved Rock Island Refuge miles and miles away at sea to rescue his young friend Will, imprisoned at an outpost in a lagoon far away from civilization. The Pirate Captain has waited for several hours behind a large rock, and as the night falls he grabs his oars and silently approaches the Lagoon Lockup. He hopes that his plan has worked, because he has sent ahead his mystery friend from his Skull's Eye Schooner Crew: This guy gave the soldiers one barrel full of rum before he again sailed away. Luckily the soldiers never hestitated and they quickly got drunk while their attention towards young Will was long forgotten. Now Will has been able to break open the rusty prison door and has been waiting patiently for his captain, while listening to the drunken soldiers sing and chat. The once so strict and regular officer falls asleep on the front docks, just as Captain Redbeard approaches the Lagoon Lockup: It looks as though Captain Redbeard's plan has worked - he saved Will, and can return safely to his headquarters at the Rock Island Refuge. THE VERDICT Design: 9/10 - The Lagoon Lockup has a great, funtional design without any weird "ideas" from the LEGO design team. I think it's almost flawless, and it's still one of the most popular Classic Pirate sets out there. The only thing missing is some sort of feature like a trap, or hidden room. But you actually don't see those features in any of the Soldier's sets. So maybe it's not so bad anyway ;) Playability: 9/10 - The possibilities are many when you have a boat, a prison and a tavern. Parts: 7/10 There's not a lot going on here. But the rowing boat with the red and white sail, plus the five minifigs add up, and makes this worth it. Price: 9/10 All things considered: Large base plate, rowing boat with a rare sail, five minifgs and a canon, this was actually a pretty great purchase. All in all, this set certainly deserves all the praise that it gets on this forum, no doubt. This concludes my third review. I hope you enjoyed it. Please let me know if I forgot something, and I'll add it as soon as possible.

Just for reference: I bought two sets of the Cannon Battle today in the same shop, and the one had a dark green striped torso while the other one had the light green striped torso. Both had the mistake in the instructions where the pirate has white arms, and not yellow. BUT: In one of the instructions the head of the pirate is switched over with the head of the soldier in the instructions. Strange mistake, because that mistake is not in the other instruction book... they've got to much stuff to do in one day at the LEGO factory I think.

Sweet review. Sometimes I look at pictures of LEGO sets and think "meh - that's not really a set for me" This set was kind of "meh" for me, but after reading and seeing your review, my opinion changed quite a bit. Thanks :)

Where have all the pirate sets gone in Australia?
Lorentzen replied to Melbourne pirate fan '87's topic in LEGO Pirates
Hi :) I don't know if it's a good thing or not. But if they are sold out in two countries ( I haven't checked Denmark yet ) that must certainly have sent out a "message" to TLG that the new Pirate theme is a huge succes :) I hope that's the case. I haven't seen the BB in any regular toy store here in Denmark - only the huge toy stores have it in stock, and one of the biggest toy store chains in Denmark "Fætter BR" does not have the ship on their shelves. Very strange -
Wow - what an amazing review. It sort of made me want to own this set :) there are a lot of nice features in this set for sure. Excellent pictures btw
-
Thanks - I just thought that since this was the only review of such a classic, it deserved a bumping ;) I absolutely love this set, especially since it looks so much like the 1989 line. I was nine years old, and already a huge pirate fan, so to have Lego launch Pirates was a dream come true for me. I still think that the 1989-1992-ish has the best Pirates sets of them all
-
I thought I'd bump this review for those who haven't seen it yet. It hasn't been indexed so I thought I could help those who didn't know I made the review into getting to know this set a little better

Hello again I saw some amazing pictures on ebay, in an auction for an almost mint SES - I then asked the seller for permition to use the pictures here, and so I photoshopped some of them They are in the first post of this thread, and they really show how magnificent this box is - mmm - I wish I had the box. A week ago I won that very rare Pirate/Trader-guy on German ebay, so now he has joined my Skull's Eye crew...
-
This is due to laziness :) - I'm gonna re-upload some new pictures soon, instead of those without the digi background oh... and sorry about the sexism :) - I tend to forget that girls and women also love Lego thanks for all the nice comments people have made

The review: This set is the follow-up to the massively popular Forbidden Island, that was released in the virgin year of the Lego Pirates - 1989 Two years later, in 1991, the now succesful Lego Pirates, with Redbeard as their leader, thought it necessary to build an island big enough, to house all of their loot, and even park their beauty of a ship - the Black Seas Barracuda. Rock Island Refuge, is in my opinion the perfect hideout for the swashbuckling swashbucklers of the Caribbean seas... I'll show you why Let's start with the manual: This is a random page - and I would like to say that RIR is a bit difficult for younger Lego fans to build - but that does not make the set a bad investment, because the kids should be able to build it, by concentrating a bit - which is a good and important thing to master; concentration... The many accessories Flags, and a rare blue and white sail: Shark, canon, treasure chest w. gold, and a barrel w. a sword Weapons, animals, treasure map, and oars: This set has many nice accessories, but one of the best things, is the red rowing boat with the blue sail. Further more you get a raft, which can transport loot from a pirate ship onto the dock of the Rock Island Refuge. Let's take a closer look at those two: The magnificent rowing boat: I've played around with photoshop for this review - I borrowed some of the CG Backgrounds from classic-pirates.com The raft: This set comes with a bunch of pirates and two imperial soldiers: Four men, and one woman - she has to be tough to keep up with these guys... Whoa!! They are ready to fight for their belongings. I think that 7 minifigs is a great number of minifigs for this kind of set. We are always begging for a lot of minifigs, and to get seven all at once is great. On to the actual Island: The baseplate is similar to the 1989 Eldorado Fortress, only this one has green rocks instead of grey rocks. This set is also a bit larger than the Eldorado Fortress, because it has the extra blue plate. Here are some pictures of the set in its entirety: What a great island - it is a revamping of the Forbidden Island - the design is similar, with a lot of palm tree leaves, the black castle walls, the suspension bridges, the prison cells, and the grey stairs etc. etc. Here are some pictures of the details on the island - i.e. the prison cell, the treasure hold, the suspension bridges, the crane tower, the dock, the stairs etc. etc. The prison cell: The suspension bridges: The crane tower: further down, where you can see the dock: The dock: The cannon: The treasure hold: Uhh... why is there no floor to the side of that hatch? This be the last picture in this review, arrrr: I loved to build this set, and I love that you get 7 minifigs, a rowing boat with a sail, and a raft, with this set. The two soldiers are great for armybuilding, and you get a woman pirate, which is always a nice change. On to my verdict! Design: 9/10 - I've always loved the classic pirate line, before TLG changed it into Islander themes, and Armada stuff This right here is perfect! almost... why is there such a large hole on top of the treasure hold? The designers should have made something there. After all, this is quite a large set. Playability: 10/10 - you get so much playability with this set. Two soldiers and their rowing boat, a raft, a dock, a treasure hold/dungeon, a prison cell, a firing canon... 7 seven minifigs! The possibilities are endless, and if you have ship, you can park it at this island and then you get even more out of this set. Perfect! Parts: 10/10 there are a large number of great parts to this set. Two suspension bridges, some stairs, the baseplate, the extra blue plate, the palm tree leaves, the two boat riggings, the rare blue and white sail with the small rowing boat mast, the rowing boat, all the black castle walls, a canon - I could keep on going... Price: 10/10 - I think $66 back then was a fair price, especially compared to what you get. Just look at the parts, the playability and the amount of minifigs. I hope you enjoyed my second Pictorial review (Skull's Eye Schooner being the first) - let me know if I'm missing something, or if there are some pictures you would like to see. Unfortunately, I don't have the box :(

3 Eldorado Fortresses (6276) has been sold as BIN from Germany - 60 Euros for a complete set w. instructions and no box 1 (so far) Rock Island Refuge (6273) has been sold as BIN from Germany for 49 Euros for a complete set w. instructions and no box looks like the average price for the Rock Island Refuge is around 50 Euros right now. The Eldorado Fortress has an average price right now of around 40 UK pounds, I think The BSB has totally different price tags, almost daily. But yesterday, a beautiful BSB w. instructions and box was sold for around 120 Euros The day before, a complete and great condition BSB was sold for only 41 UK pounds...
