EB Community Castle Build: Discussion Thread
Thrash replied to I Scream Clone's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I agree. While your romance MOC was very nice, I think it was too big to work well as a tree in the EBCCB. It's hard to say whether we should set a maximum size for the items between the keep and the outside modules or if ISC should just decide on a case by case basis if the modules are too big. ~Thrash -

You won't have to send your module away. Instead, if the community decides you've created the best dungeon you just need to make picture instruction for it so that someone else could recreate it. Great, it looks like we're all on the same page about the layout. In case ISC wants to post a poll regarding what direction the layout should take, here are two options that show what we could do with the space between the keep and the outside modules. V7 is, in my opinion, the way to go, since I made V6 to show that filling the empty space with baseplates would be a terrible idea. Also, ISC, since 3D Brickthing is inquiring about the final plans for getting all of the modules together, you might want to include something about that on the first post so people know what’s going on. ~Thrash -
Great job again Sandy! The three creations you've made have been great and have set a good standard for other entries for the keep of the castle. When you take apart the Wizards tower, would you be willing to take some shots so that we can reconstruct it at the end of this project? you don't have to take pictures of every single peice being removed, just enough pictures so that it could be reconstructed without too much effort. Check with ISC, but I'm pretty sure that this is what he wants people to do before taking apart their modules. Hopefully after the PTV contest you can come back to EBCCB and make more great modules! Wow, that's an awesome exterior for the carpenter. I love the way you've used the brown squares to make the pillars. After seeing how well you did with the outside, I can't wait to see what you can come up with for the inside! ~Thrash

NOTE: This is not the layout. This is just a layout I made to illustrate a few points. In the above layout, I’ve made a few changes: 1. I’ve added in 10 and 24 as either alley ways or stairs up to the outside wall. The reason for this is to make there be 32 studs between the keep and the 16x16 modules on the back wall. Also, I thought it might be cool to have them there. 2. I’ve added 5 modules on each side of the keep. Due to all the new ideas that people are coming up with and the growing interest, I thought it would be appropriate to create some extra room. Also, the space between the keep and the outer wall seemed a bit too large on the sides, so this cuts down on the empty space. 3. I’ve divided the grounds between the keep and the outer wall modules into baseplates as best I could. Obviously, this caused me some problems due to the odd angles that some of the modules are on. I think that points 1 and 2 are both changes that are positive and should be implemented in the final layout. However, the division of the grounds in the base plate seems to not work very well. Not only would it add 20 or so modules to the build (this thing is already big enough!), but I don’t think it would look very good unless one person did it or a group of people worked VERY hard to make it all look connected. Having every stud filled might also cause the whole thing to look really cramped. I think a better way to attack all of the empty space would be to allow people to build small things that would fit in the dead space (trees, market stands, statues, etc.). That way, if we ever do manage to get this thing together, we can just take the empty space modules and position them freely between the keep and the outside wall modules whatever way looks best. What I have in mind is stuff similar to the market stand and tree in 10193 Medieval Market Village. What do you guys think about this? ~Thrash -
Ha, you caught us. A stone oil smelter was probably a good idea. An oil smelter made out of wood would really just be absolutely terrible... ~Thrash

That's great ISC! I couldn't have imagined a more perfect oil smelter for the castle! ~Thrash

Ha, sorry about that. They would hardly be good Thieves at all if they didn't try to rob the armory, though! Bummer about the lack of gray bricks. To maximize the amount of EBCCB modules you can do, you can always just make your back wall be detachable, and then move it from module to module whenever you take pictures. Then you can just choose one of the modules where the actual structures doesn't actually use a lot of gray. For example, I was running low on gray so I just detached the wall from my Thieves Guild, threw it on another 16x16, and started building the Jester's Joke shop, which used all red and blue instead of gray. I've responded to your last comment in the discussion thread. ~Thrash

Good job with the guidelines. Hopefully that will help people new to the EBCCB have a better understanding of what is going on. I can only think of two things to add: 1. Anyone can do any of the creations, even if someone else has already done that creation. Once all the modules have been built we will have polls to determine which module of the multiple-entry-modules will be included. 2. If you have an idea of another structure that would be good to have in the EBCCB, let us know and we can add it to the list. The first one is just so that new members don't shy away from modules that have already been built. There seems to have been a lot of confusion about that. The second is in case we forgot something that would be really cool to have in a giant castle. Might as well post pictures of it. If the community likes it, I'm sure we can find a way to include it in the final build. I can't wait to see your butcher either. It seems like that's a pretty hot item, so you'll probably have some good competition! Can't wait to see the pictures of your updated armory. You've got some stiff competition with Guss's armory! In the Alpha thread, Guss posted the following. It addressed an important issue, so I'm bringing it up in this thread: You bring up a good point about the little scene that you want to make. Certainly, an issue that needs to be addressed eventually is what we will do for the space between the 16x16s and the keep. One option would be to divide it into 32x32 plates and let people work on individual spots, but I'm worried that would lead to the landscaping looking very strange. Another option might be to make a committee of EBCCBers that would be willing to work closely with eachother to create the landscaping for all of the empty space in the castle. This would certainly be a large and involved project, but I think it is the better idea of the two. What does everyone think we should do with the empty space between the outside wall modules and the keep? ~Thrash -
That's a great looking Armory that you've built Guss. My two favorite details are the spinning armor rack and the Thieves on the roof. That's a really cool idea to show some interaction between the various modules! I agree that you probably don't need a wall on the side next to the 32x32 module. In fact, it's a good idea to not have one to make it easier for people to view the interior when it's not connected to other modules. Even though we have two entries for the Armory now, I think that we should hold off on doing a poll since more people might want to make one. I guess what we should do is just wait until every module has been done and then post polls for anything with multiple entries. Keep up the great work Guss! What do you think you'll be doing next? ~Thrash

Thanks for all the comments guys! To answer your questions: I don't have my collection at the University with me, but I've gone home the past two weekends and one day for election day to work on the MOCs. I would say that each one takes me about 3 or 4 hours, and then another hour or so to photograph and post. All the MOCing I've been doing has caused me to put off a few papers for Philosophy and Urban Economics that I have to be done by the end of November, so I might not be able to make much more until the start of December! I'm really glad you like my MOCs, and I can't wait to see what you come up with when you decide to do one of the modules! The minotaur is my design, however it was inspired by CountBlockula's minotaur on brickshelf. Below is a comparison picture so you can see what I changed and what I kept: Mine Count Blockulas As you can see, I kept the way the legs are bent back, the hooves, and the hands for eyes. The main thing that I wanted to change about CountBlockulas were I wanted to make the face longer since his looks a little flat and change the torso to yellow, since a Minotaur is supposed to have the body of a human man. Thanks Guss! The ballista was kind of a last minute thought for the module since the roof looked a little barren when I was done, but I was very happy with the way it turned out. I don't know about all that...it would be tough for me to make an armoury better than yours to be in the final build! ~Thrash

You just resize the pictures before you upload them to the internet. It looks like the thumbnails ISC are making are 160x160 (or 160xless-than-160 pixels if the pictures isn't square), so make them that size, upload them, and then do the same thing you would do to make a large picture a link. The code would be as follows: Hope that helps. ~Thrash -

I've just finished up my Adventurers Guild! Head on over to the Beta Group Thread for more pictures! My four latest all together: Outside wall: ISC, I've made all of mine in to thumbnails to make it easier for you. Here's the updated code for my 6 thumbnails. I've just finished an Adventurers Guild! I got my inspiration for this mostly from the Adventurers Guild in the great game Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire. Some of you might not be familiar with it, but it was a room with lots of strange animal heads on the wall and a Minotaur named Toro as the leader of the guild. For my minotaur design, I was inspired by CountBlockula's Minotaur, but changed a few things so that I wasn't just ripping the design directly off of him. Overview: The foreigner in the corner with various weapons and artifacts from his land: The other side, with a visitor's log so that adventurers from all around can come and sign their name: Front with no characters: Back: I put a ballista on top. I wanted to do something different for the roof, so I figured that it would be cool to have a little guard tower with a ballista on top. Since this will be on left side of the castle by the dock, this will be facing towards the ocean. I'd like to see a boat try to mess with a bolt this big!: Minotaur and Foreigner: Closeup of the minotaur (the horns are from brickforge): Hope you guys like it! Now I'm gonna take a rest and see what everyone builds Adventurers Guild Brickshelf ~Thrash

Anyone can build anything. However, I think Erdbeeries and Dan Church are also building the butcher, so you'll have some competition. In the event that more than one person builds a module, we'll make a poll and let the community decide which one is included in the build. Nope. On the layout the Dungeon is in spot 11, and 11 is a 32x32. The idea behind the larger modules was that they would double as guard towers, so if you go for the dungeon try to make it guard-tower-like on the outside. The 32x32 plate will be positioned on the corner such that the walls are 8 studs from the outside of the baseplate. I can try to come up with a diagram if you're not sure what i'm saying... ~Thrash -
Thanks for all the comments guys! Sandy, I can't wait to see your library, especially if it's as good as all your other creations have been so far! ~Thrash

A money changer is a great idea. I knew a medieval town had to have some type of bank-like thing, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what it would be. Well done. As soon as ISC sees your post he'll add you to one of the two teams. Then you can post your MOCs for the build in that thread. Basically they were religious plays that depicted scenes from the bible. Check out the wikipedia article for more info. ~Thrash -

I would assume that's what will happen. ISC or someone can just set up a pole with a few pictures of both and then give it a few days to see who gets the most votes. If they're amazing, then we might just have to include both. I think that the courtyard will be 32x32. Can't wait to see it! ~Thrash -

Great to have you on board, Dan. What do you think you'll be building first? ~Thrash -
This is a nice little house Dan. I really like the bed and the detail over the front door. Say...this looks like it would fit nicely in the EBCCB! You should come join! ~Thrash

That's awesome. I love how you put the spears in the wall to make it spiked!

Sure. On the layout, the treasury was made to be 16x32 with a 8x32 hallway outside, but you could also make it 16x16 and 8x16, respectively. Whichever you think would work better. For a look at the hallway and overall look of the rooms of the keep, you might want to check out Sandy's princess chamber. Sure. Anyone can build anything, even if someone else has already built it. When you're done, you just post pictures. I'm not sure what the final verdict is, but we've considered having each person make some picture-instructions of how to build each of their creations. That way we will be able to recreate all of them (if we can't physically get the together) for a convention or something. ISC, perhaps since there's such a growing interest you should make explicit guidelines for joining and building in the first post. Also, it looks like people are wanting to build the rooms in the keep, so maybe you should update the first post with the layout for the keep. I posted the layout with a new corresponding list a while back. ~Thrash -

That's a great looking wall Buttons, but if it's the outside wall I don't think it's going to work. The only requirements that we really have for each module are: 1. It must fit on a 16x16 base plate (unless otherwise shown on the layout in the original post) 2. The outside wall must meet the requirements set forth in the original post We don't make these requirements to stunt creativity. Instead, these requirements are the bare minimum that we need so that all of the creations can easily fit together in the end and look great. Other than that, be as creative as you want! ~Thrash -

Sorry Erdbeereis I was just trying to build one that would use pretty unique bricks so that I didn't have to take any of my others apart to build it. I didn't think to check the list to make sure you weren't already doing it! My feelings won't be hurt if you build one too and then we let the community decide which one to use. If everyone really likes both, maybe both of them can be in the final product! After all, it is really easy to just add a few modules in... In other news, I just finished my Troll Embassy! Head on over to the Beta Group Thread for more pictures. And a few shots of multiple modules together: Hope you guys like it! ~Thrash -
I managed to whip up a Troll Embassy yesterday...here it is. Overall: There's the ambassador, a lookout, a guard, and a chef in the Embassy: The chef's cooking some meat and carrots...: Or maybe his big cauldron is there to cover up the human bones in the fire: One more shot: Troll Ambassador, Chef, Guard, Lookout: Thanks for looking!
