1. No problem. Theres a lot of variety with the different structures on the list, so I'm sure you'll be able to find something that suits you! Also, don't be shy if the thing you want to do already has a name next to it. A little competition is a good thing! ~Thrash
2. I agree...it would look a lot more finished if you tiled it. Tiling the floor would also make your plush purple carpet stick out even more. Also, I love the spinning wheel. That's an awesome detail I wouldn't have thought to put in there. Ah, yes. That's exactly what I meant when I put Poleturner on the list. I envisioned a little shop with some woodturning going on and then maybe a few polearms (spears, pikes, etc.) on display. Hope that helps! ~Thrash
3. I don't think it's too late. There are still lots of unclaimed structures to be built...just tell us what you want to do and I'll put your name by it on the list! The layout is by no means meant to be only 1 story at each spot. If you can come up with enough rooms to fill another story of the keep, on the next version of the layout I'll add a part for the second story keep. It was fairly easy to modify, so it wasn't a problem. I'm going to try to not modify it very much, but your hallway idea really caught my eye. And I also edited it for the Dragonator, since I really look forward to seeing what he can do with a 64x32 gatehouse. As for your comments about the buildings being out of place, here was my reasoning for each: Undertaker: I had thought about adding this to the list oringally, but decided not to. Then, someone, Lasse D I think, said that they had a cool idea for an undertaker, so I figured why not let him go for it? Mad Scientist Lab: This one was in there only because I figured it would lead to a really cool creation. I figured that some crazy people in the middle aged probably liked science. Bank: I was wavering between this and tax collector when I made the original list. Since the first bank was in 1406 in Genoa, I figured that it fit the time period. I ultimately chose the bank over the tax collector because I wanted to see what someone could come up with for a medieval vault. That being said, I think you're probably right that those three things might not be the most appropriate. As a result, I've made the following changes: Bank to Tax Collector Mad Scientist Lab to Alchemist Undertaker to Brothel If you guys think the Brothel is inappropriate, I'm open to other suggestions. In fact, even if you like the idea of the Brothel, keep other suggestions coming about structures that would be good to have! ~Thrash
4. No problem ISC, I updated the list. Just copy the following code into your signature:
5. It's my understanding that once you have made a compenent, you are supposed to make instructions for how to build it and then you can take it apart. That way someone can rebuild it when we decide to put them all together. ~Thrash
6. I don't see why we couldn't! I'm assuming that anyone can work on as many or as few structures as they want. Then, if two people have made the same thing, it'll be made into a poll so the community can decide which one they want to see in the final Community Build. I've got no problem with it. I Scream Clone has the final say, though. I'm just trying to help out by making modified layouts and lists with everyone's names to keep things organized, but I Scream Clone is really in charge here... ~Thrash
7. To try to keep everyone on the same page, I've read over both the forums and tried to come up with a modified layout to accomodate what everyone wants to do. Also, I've added a few new structures that I thought some people might be interested in. Here's the updated structure list: 1. Main Gatehouse - Dragonator 2. Oil Smelter 3. Bakery - Erdbeereis1 4. Jester’s Joke Shop – Erdbeereis1 5. Wizard Tower - Adam 6. Thieves Guild - Thrash 7. Tavern – Captain Green Hair 8. Apothecary 9. Adventurers Guild 10. Brothel 11. Dungeon 12. Torture Chamber - Pickerel 13. Alchemist/Mad Scientist Lab - Pickerel, Quarryman 14. Library 15. Tax Collector 16. Back Gatehouse - Adam 17. Falconer 18. Fighting Arena - I Scream Clone 19. Fletcher - randomparrot 20. Poleturner 21. Barracks 22. Armory 23. Blacksmith - Thrash 24. Tanner 25. Stables - Stash2sixx 26. Carpenter - Lasse D 27. Mason’s Guild - Stol 28. Monastery - Stol 29. Chapel - Stol 30. Mystery Play 31. Secondary Gatehouse - Pickerel 32. Servants Quarters 33. Kitchen – Wouwie13, Erdbeereis1 34. Treasure Room 35. Grand Hall 36. King/Queens Room 37. Princess Chambers - Sandy 38. Guest Room - randomparrot 39. Courtyard 40. Dock – Wouwie13, Captain Green Hair On another note, I want to point out that the plan allows anyone to build a few extra studs in towards the center if you need extra room. Also, since we've moved the wall in and made it thicker, I was thinking that maybe we should just build the walls on 6x16 baseplates that attach to back of each structure. What do you guys think? Something mentioned in the beta thread gave me an idea: anyone want to add a brothel in place of one of the more boring structures? ~Thrash
8. I've already done a blacksmith shop that just needs a few finishing touches and then it will be good to go. If you still want to build a blacksmith shop, that's fine though...we can have the community vote on which one they like better! A little competition never hurt anyone, eh? Also, you could just do the poleturner or fletcher or something...those are similar to a blacksmith shop but need to be done As for the undertaker, it seems like the plans of the castle are pretty liquid, so it would be easy for you to add one in. Not only do we have the Wild Card spot, but we could always just expand the castle and add two more spots in... Sandy, I love your princess chamber. I'm thinking about messing with the layout a bit later today to account for some changes that people seem to want to make. For example, I'll add in a little hallway around the inside of the Keep since what you did looks so nice. Also, I guess I'll look at the other groups thread to see what they're doing with the front gatehouse dimensions and then maybe expand the layout to make room for two more 16x16 plots (ideas: falconer, undertaker, potter, bakery). It seems like there is a lot more interest in doing the civilian type structures like the Joke Shop, so I figured that we could add a few more like that. ~Thrash
9. Seems like everyone wants to do all the structures on the left side. I guess since both groups seem to want to do this, we could both give it a shot and then have the community vote on which groups they like better. If we do the right side, I'll do the blacksmith since I already have that done. If we work on the left side, I'll go for the thieves guild. ~Thrash
10. I know this isn't my group, but I thought I could provide some input about the Mad Scientist/Torture Lab. I put them next to eachother so that the mad scientist could help out with the torturing or use the prisoners for experiments, but I kept them as two seperate things with the idea that the torturer would do traditional tortures (the rack, iron maiden, etc.) and then the mad scientist could get more creative. ~Thrash
11. I think that this has turned into more of a community medieval walled city with a keep build. I think that's a good thing though. We can always mess with the modules a bit to make some of them a bit larger. It would be easy to stretch the walls and throw in a 16x32 in place of a 16x16 on both sides. As for the Thieves Guild, I envisioned it as sort of a run down house that thieves secretly inhabit. I've started working on that specific module, and my goal is to make it look like an old run down house that no one cares about. The door's all boarded up, and there are a few secret entrances... ~Thrash
12. Good job picking the teams ISC. My only concern is that when I chose the numbers for the structures, I tried to group certain things together. For example, the Tavern is next to the theives guild, apothecary, and adventure's guild since those all seem to be the same sort of thing. And then I put the blacksmith, poleturner, armory, etc. all together since they are related. The reason I bring this up is because in my group for example, ISC wants to do a Wizard tower while stash2sixx wants to do the stables. If you use my numbering system, these are basically on different sides of the castle. However, if you guys want to just do sections and randomly pull stuff from the list, then that's fine too. I just thought that grouping certain types of buildings together would make for a better finished product. Another solution to this problem could be for everyone to make a list of 3 or 4 structures they would be interested in building, and then having ISC figure out a grouping system that would match people who want to build structures that are close to eachother. I still think it would be best to just set a standard wall height (12, probably) and get rid of the team structure...I mean, it's set up so that anyone can build one of the modules and then add it on to the rest. ~Thrash P.S. I'll volunteer to do the Theives Guild for my group.
13. I would say that it's up to you how many walls you have. There is certainly no requirement for having walls on all three sides, it really depends on the type of structure you're making. For example, a blacksmith could be open-air, or it could be closed in by walls. If we stick with the catwalk height and everything from the first page, we could probably use my blacksmith shop as an example module. Thanks! I haven't really thought about landscaping outside of the walls. Once we have the inside of the castle build maybe we can think of a moat or some landscaping outside. I like the idea...it's added to the list! I designed the layout with the intention of using the picture in the first post as how we would do the outside walls. However, to make the castle more impressive we could increase the wall heights from 6 and 12 to 12 and 18. This would make the outside walls a lot higher, and then make the keep look even bigger and cooler. A few other concerns I have: I'm a little fuzzy on the whole group set-up. Are we just splitting the construction into groups, and whatever each group builds for their section will stand? Or are we going to have all the groups build one section and then vote one which group did the best? I think that voting for which group did the best would lead to people making cooler stuff to ensure that it will win and be included in the final community castle build. Let me know what you guys think... Also, I was thinking about a few other ideas for buildings that could be included...maybe one of these could go in the current WILD CARD spot: Falconer Potter ~Thrash
14. Thanks for choosing my layout! Before we get started building (especially if we want to do it in groups), we should probably decide roughly what each number on the layout will correspond to. Since it was my crazy idea to have 35 slots for buildings, I felt like I should come up with a list of how to fill each spot. For reference, here is the layout: 1. Main Gatehouse 2. Oil Smelter 3. WILD CARD 4. Jester’s Joke Shop 5. Wizard Tower 6. Thieves Guild 7. Tavern 8. Apothecary 9. Adventures Guild 10. Bank 11. Dungeon 12. Torture Chamber 13. Mad Scientist Lab 14. Library 15. Back Gatehouse 16. Fighting Arena 17. Fletcher 18. Poleturner 19. Barracks 20. Armory 21. Blacksmith 22. Tanner 23. Stables 24. Carpenter 25. Mason’s Guild 26. Monastery 27. Church 28. Mystery Play 29. Secondary Gatehouse 30. Servants Quarters 31. Kitchen 32. Grand Hall 33. King/Queens Room 34. Guest Room 35. Dock In the Courtyard/Other Ideas Gardens Statues Gallows Stocks Well Market place (kind of like 10193) Circus Tournament Garderobe (medieval toilet) For the WILD CARD at spot #3, I figured that someone might have a good idea for a building I was missing or we could just fill it with the best looking runner-up. If we can all agree on a list of what corresponds to what, it will make the building go much smoother since each group will know exactly what to incorporate. Let me know what you guys think! ~Thrash
15. I agree. I think it's an excellent idea to end the voting... ...surprise surprise. ~Thrash
16. Thanks! Ha, I'm not sure either. They do look pretty similar, so I can't blame them. And plus, people thinking that my name is Trash makes for some funny comments on my MOCs every now and then... How are we gonna decide when this voting ends? I guess we should just wait until the comments in this thread slow down for a day or so and that will show us that just about everyone who wants to vote has voted. ~Thrash
17. Sure, that sounds good. I would love to do that. Also, do you think you could update the original post on here to show my updated design with the dock so that people who might just read the first post before they vote will see it? Thanks! ~Thrash
18. Ah, very true. Ha, Pickerel, when I read it I thought "Oh cool, a mysterious circus. That's a really interesting idea!" I fixed it though so that circus and mystery play are two seperate ideas... ~Thrash
19. The only worry that I have about doing it in teams is that one team might have one element that's really great while the rest of their creations fall flat, while another group might have an overall good build, but nothing as cool as the one element from the other group. If we have the competing group format, the really great element from the first group would be left out. I posted this in the other thread, but figured I should put it here too... The only addition is the dock on the left side. Also, here's a little list I came up with with everything I could possibly think of that would go in a castle or medieval town: Traditional Main Gatehouse Secondary Gatehouse Stables Armory Barracks Dungeon Kitchen Blacksmith King's Room Guest Room Servant's Quarters Grand Hall In the Courtyard Gardens Statues Gallows Stocks Well Market place (kind of like 10193) Other Ideas Torture Chamber Wizard's Astronomy Tower Chapel Monastery Adventurers Guild Bank Tavern Thieves Guild Apothecary Mad Scientist Lab Library Fletcher Carpenter Mason’s Guild Tanner Pole turner Oil smelter Jester’s Quarters (in honor of the new Jester Lego made) Fighting Arena Dock/Wharf Mystery Play (thanks to pickerel) Circus (thanks to pickerel) Tournament (thanks to pickerel) ~Thrash
20. Since some poeple expressed interest in having a dock of some sort, I've added one to my plan so that you can see how it would fit in: ~Thrash
21. Ha, I love the idea of enslaving Hinckley at the end and having him rebuild everything. Also, the idea of having a dock is great. It would be awesome to put in a dock at one of the 3 side towers on my design (7, 15, or 23). Then, of course we would need to have a tavern near by... It's a great idea to have teams. If we have teams then the only thing we would really need to do is have a standard for the color and design at the top of the wall (i.e. 2x1 bricks every 2 studs) so that it doesn't look TOO random. ~Thrash
22. I voted for Thrash's, but I might be a little biased... The reason I like mine the best is that it will allow for a medieval walled city, which will lead to lots of cool creations like an apothecary, wizard tower, adventurers guild, theives guild, tavern, etc. while still having all of the classic castle components like a blacksmith, dungeon, and keep. Also, since it's larger it will allow a lot more people to get involved, which is important since we've gotten so much positive response to the idea of this whole project. As for the wharf/dock, it could be easily attached at any of the 3 middle towers (7, 15, or 32) depending on where we want the body of water to be. Also, mine seems to be the most modular and will make for the smoothest community build. ~Thrash
23. Here are a few things that we all need to consider moving forward: What is the ultimate goal for this project? A couple possibilities would be to somehow bring all of the winning entries together and set up the entire castle, maybe at a convention. Another option would be to create instructions for each winning entry and then have someone with tons of bricks assemble each part and put them all together. Another option would just be to make an index of all of the winning entries so that someone could take a virtual tour of our castle. This last option would be the least awesome, but still pretty cool. Also, this is important because people need to know whether they can take apart their buildings once they’ve created them and made instructions. I think it would be best if we could take them apart so as not to tie up all our bricks and prevent us from making more entries… What sorts of buildings do we want in the castle? This could either end up being a small little castle with a few components (blacksmith, stable, dungeon) or a giant walled city including a lot of civilian structures like a tavern, adventurers guild, apothecary, and some houses. It would be much easier to decide on a size and layout if we first knew what exactly we all wanted to include. If we just want it to be a castle with a few components, should we make a town outside the walls? Personally, I think that we should just make it be a walled city, but this is a cool idea if you guys aren’t up for that. ~Thrash
24. Here’s an updated version of the castle layout. I think Sandy has a good idea with the U-shape, so that’s why I got rid of the front two towers and angled the walls on the front. Also, it let us cut out a few of the 16x16 spaces, since we probably had a few too many before. I think that 30, 31, 33, and 34 can be where all of the royalty lives, and then 32 can be the King’s chamber with the throne and everything. Also, as you can see on the Legend, the walls to the center part will be twice as tall as the outside walls. What do you guys think of this one? ~Thrash
25. That's a good question. Only 6 studs high might be a little short for castle walls. Maybe we should up the size to 12 studs for the 16x16 baseplates and then on the 32x32 baseplates we could go higher to 18 or maybe 20 studs high. ~Thrash
