  1. Alternatively, you might skip the stern hull section completely and build your stern on the last middle section. The new 4184 Black Pearl will use that solution (see here). I know some people complain it's too low, but I see no problem with building it higher. It's fine with me too!
  2. Just got 4182 Cannibal Escape for a reasonably good price. I'm quite happy to finally get those cannibal minifigs.
  3. Age: 30 Age you started building: 8 (I think) Country: Poland Occupation: Geologist Married: Yes Children: No Does your spouse or child/children build: My wife builds sets with me sometimes Do you have close friends who build: No Do you build together with your friends: No Do you regularly attend Lego conventions: No How much money do you spend on Lego product a year: I can't count that! How much time do you spend building/playing a day: Let's say 1 hour a day average, sometimes it's a whole day, but there are whole weeks when I practically do nothing with LEGO Favored theme/themes: Pirates Do you primarily collect retail sets, build MOCs, or both? MOCs (I buy sets, but I rarely keep them AS sets) Did you experience a "dark age": Not really. There were times when I was less interested in LEGO, because I had other things do to, but this still happens today too. So no real dark age. If yes, what age did you enter your "dark age" No dark are What age did you exit your "dark age": No dark are Other hobbies (other toy collecting, sports, drawing etc.): Playing the guitar, singing, watching movies In your own words what makes Lego bricks so special: You can do anything with them. You can't get bored. They do miracles to your imagination. May I PM you with a request for a personal interview: Yes.
  4. I like your modifications very much! It still needs a front sail though, but I know it's kinda difficult as such sail was never made in this colour. As for the cannon thing - right now I have about 50 cannons (need to count them) and only 2 are non-firing ones! I got them with a second-hand Imperial Flagship (the old one). The rest are standard European firing cannons (including cannons from 2009+), and in fact I wish I had more non-firing ones, as I really like the pattern they have. So my situation is quite opposite to many other AFOLs (mainly those from U.S.). I don't fire them at all anyway.
  5. Those minifigs are real LEGO, but they also exist as fakes - I have a few of those green-shirted fake ones myself. They are from Enlighten brand or whatever it's called. As for the cannons, there was also a third type - non-shooting with no crossed cannons pattern - they appeared very briefly before the standard non-shooting ones were introduced, and they were basically shooting ones with the spring mechanism removed. Anyway, can someone add this thread to the review index? Thanks!
  6. Sets in USA (and some other countries) had non-shooting cannons, sets in Europe had shooting cannons. So there's nothing wrong with the review as far as I know.
  7. You might also add this one once you're at it!
  8. It would be better to start another thread in MOC subforum about your modified RBR, and leave that one just for the review of the original, I think. Expect this review to be blogged on our frontpage soon! [bloggedcp][/bloggedcp]
  9. Welcome to the forums Bricverson! Thanks for the review. We really needed it, it fact it was the only officially released ship that wasn't yet reviewed here! Now we have'em all (except re-releases, but that's another story). The problem with this set is that it has some very cool features, and some poor ones, and it does look like they were trying to cut down on piece count here. I for one think that the skull at the stern looks really good, and so do the big white arches at the base of the main mast. The blue walls of the sterncastle aren't bad either. But I think the tilting mast and falling-off stern were unnecessary - a proper captain's cabin would've been better. It also needs more sails. And the way the cannons are placed doesn't make much sense. Actually, lately I've been thinking about leaving the best features of the set intact, and building a much better ship around them, improving the rest - kinda like Red Beard Runner ver. 2.0. I think a really good-looking ship can be achieved that way, because this set definitely has some potential. Once again thanks for the great review! Maybe that's just me, but I think the black and white sail from Skull's Eye Schooner/Renegade Runner blends in quite nicely with Red Beard Runner's grey and white sails:
  10. It's a lucky coincidence that I came across this thread now, because there's been some serious changes in my fleet very recently. Currently I have 9 completely assembled ships. Three of them are sets: Black Seas Barracuda (slightly modified), Imperial Flagship (10210) and Queen Anne's Revenge (which I built yesterday ). Six are MOCs. Not so long ago I had 13 ships standing on my shelves. And that was before I got Queen Anne's Revenge. A few days ago however I decided to take apart 5 of them (4 MOCs + Brickbeard's Bounty). The reason was that I think I can now build better MOCs than those I had, quite frankly I didn't like some of them that much anymore. I will use bricks from those dismantled ships to build new ones in the future. As for Brickbeard's Bounty, it's a good set and I kept it assembled for quite some time (with custom white sails though), but the time has come to take it apart for parts too. However, just before I dismantled those 5 ships, I took one last picture of my whole fleet and uploaded it two days ago to Brickshelf, without even knowing this thread existed. So here they are, the 13 ships that I used to have only a few days ago: Not counting those 5 ships that have been taken apart, I also have a few hull pieces, masts and other stuff like that in storage, eventually I will use them for MOCs too. All in all, I think I have enough bricks to build about 10 more ships (that is, apart from the 9 I have) right now (some of them bigger, some smaller). But I will take my time building them. Today I feel that some of my MOC ships from the past had been kind of rushed - this time I decided to put quality over quantity. Part of the fun of building with LEGO is that we all learn as we build, gain experience to become better MOCers, and I hope to do just that. Only time will tell if I'm successful.
  11. Wow! This is simply amazing! For a moment I was certain it was made with real bricks, too bad it's not, but still - I want this as a set! Although I'm pretty sure it would cost a fortune.
  12. Actually they might both be a valuable source of parts for Pirate MOCs. That Spongebob ship might look quite interesting in LEGO form (possibly grey hull?). Oh well, we'll find out eventually...
  13. I just wonder what Jack Sparrow is doing up there? Is he supposed to be a ghost or something?
  14. That's a very nice vessel. The only two things I find weird is the yellow colour of the stern - it looks as if someone started repainting the ship but did so only with a small part of it. And the reddish-brown in the middle of the hull looks out of place too - it clashes with the old brown a bit. But the rigging and the overall shape are great! Dobra robota!
  15. This does not use pieces of the new Black Pearl, the hull pieces (bow and stern) seen here are old-style (pre-2009), probably painted black by the builder, while the real set will have new-style bow section. And making custom black sails is rather easy. By the way, I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but have you noticed that the Black Pearl will use one bow section and three middle sections - no proper stern section? An interesting solution, however jugding from the pictures, it does seem somewhat lacking because of it. Anyway, I have a feeling we will very soon be witnessing someone actually own and review this set!
  16. You could say it's better late than never, but I recently bought 4195 Queen Anne's Revenge and it should be arriving today, however I will not have time to build it until tomorrow. My plan is to keep it in on display for a month or two and then dismantle it for MOCing purposes. I also have a dismantled 7048 Troll Warship and I think they use the same dark brown middle sections, so I can use those to build a bigger ship.
  17. Great MOC there! But we need some close-ups of those custom soldiers. On a side note, I'm Polish and today Eylau is located on Polish/Russian border. It's called Bagrationovsk (Багратионовск) in Russian and Iławka in Polish. I've never been there but I once was in a city in Poland located only 30 kilometers from it. Anyway, expect it to be blogged soon! [bloggedcp][/bloggedcp]
  18. I made those sails myself, of thick paper. Custom sails are quite popular among ship MOC builders. As for the colours, I started with a red and grey hull, so I needed the same colours for the rest (plus some black), and I added all the gold to make it a rich-looking ship for a crew whose sole purpose is to acquire all things valuable. And as mentioned before, I think that ship is too heavy to float. And with paper sails I don't think I'll even try that now. Thanks for the comments and keep'em coming!
  19. It's hard to say really, I started building it a few months ago, and then just returned to it whenever I felt like it and wasn't busy with other activities. I took my time on this one. I'd say it'd maybe have taken between a week and two of constant building (if I had been building every afternoon). You're absolutely right, it's not supposed to be a historical model, I prefer LEGO's own approach of rather building ships that are cool to play with or to put on display, but are a bit cartoonish and not entirely historically accurate. I myself consider sets like Black Seas Barracuda and others to be like that too. Of course building ships as accurate as possible is cool too, but I'm a bit more on the "play" side myself. I haven't tried that but I don't think it would float - unlike 7075 it has quite a buildup of bricks onboard, it might be too heavy or not stable enough. I still don't consider this hull awful, it is cartoonish and not everyone likes the colours, but it definitely deserves more credit than lots of people give it IMO. The set it's taken from was ugly as a whole, but it did have some useful parts nonetheless. Thanks Admiral!
  20. Last week I bought 9 random Series 5 minifigs - 4 of them turned out to be Royal Guards! Quite surprising, considering the odds. I'm quite happy with that, as they'll blend nicely into my Pirate LEGO collection.
  21. Thanks for your comments! Indeed I've seen very few MOCs using that hull - I think many MOCers find it useless or ugly, but of the few I'd seen I remember at least two that were very good. And quite a long time ago I decided to try and build a ship myslelf using those parts, and I finally did, so here it is.
  22. 106C It seems like ages since I last posted a ship MOC. Anyway, here we go: THE GOLDEN STALLION The crew of this ship is only interested in one thing: adding more treasures to their vast collection. Whether it's gold, gems, or artifacts of lost civilisations - they want it. If it means following a treasure map or exploring new lands - they'll do it. If it means stealing from others, thus behaving like pirates - they'll do it too. They're basically rogue treasure hunters, who answer to no one. The ship's crewmembers come from many nations, but they don't consider themselves part of any country, holding allegiance with no one but themselves. This partially male, partially female crew is led by the daring Madam Veronique, whom you can see below: In the stern part of the ship are her quarters, where she keeps many of her most valuable treasures - next to her bed and her desk - so that she can admire them whenever she wants: Like every good ship, this one also has a galley, where the fat chef prepares all sorts of meals for everyone: "Go away! Dinner's not yet ready!" Close-up of the figurehead: Some more random pictures of the ship and her crew: Lower deck with cannons: As you can see, I used the hull of the infamous 4+ Pirate ship (adding one extra middle section). I think that this hull has some good MOCing potential, although that set itself (7075) wasn't very good. If nothing else, one can build pretty big minifig scale vessels with those hull pieces. Those walls and floors are easily removable in order to access the interior parts of the ship (shown above): And finally, a comparison picture of my ship and 10210 Imperial Flagship: They are roughly the same size, the Golden Stallion is slightly wider (obviously, as it uses the 4+ hull) and longer, but the IF is slightly taller. Because of the different hull and different length to width ratio, two masts are enough for my ship in contrast with IF's three masts. I tried adding a third mast at one point during building, but it didn't look right. My ship is much bulkier and less canoe-shaped. Check out more pictures of the Golden Stallion at Brickshelf. I guess that's it, hope you enjoyed it!
  23. This set is a classic. Words can't describe it so I won't even try - enough has been said already on numerous occasions. Oh, well, I'll just write this - I love absolutely everything about it, including the box and the instructions. And this review, just like your Caribbean Clipper review, will soon be blogged! Good job Lorentzen! [bloggedcp][/bloggedcp]
  24. I will always have a soft spot for this set. This was my first LEGO ship, and my biggest set back in the old days. I had to vote for "outstanding". Anyway, your review is so good it has to be blogged - so it soon will be! [bloggedcp][/bloggedcp]
  25. That's a fine ship indeed! I like how accessible the interior is. Definitely looks like something that The LEGO Group might have released as a real set.
