  1. Very nice, I really should try four courses of sails on a mast, it looks great, nice rope work.
  2. The sails and flag are hand-drawn ? that's some really good work, I want sails like that too
  3. Yes, when I add sails I'll update the same tread
  4. Yesss May there be many more Barquentines in the future I thought about entering it but when I saw SlyOwl's entry and than yours I gave up the idea. However, now that the deadline has extended I might still enter something
  5. Then it's up to me to proove you wrong I will make a ship one of these days (if it was totally up to me I'd make one every day) and that ship will have those recoiling cannons in it, challenge accepted ! Thanks
  6. Well, ofcourse the prefab hulls and masts are quite expensive if you don't have them yet but for the rest I was quite frugal with parts here. The hinges I used for angling the sides for example, there are only 4 car roof hinges (cheaper than the regular hinge plates Captain Greenhair uses), I also used only basic colors (cheap and easy to get). I could have said it's relatively cheap, a smaller ship would be cheaper ofcourse I think you can compare it best with my frigate: Both ships are three masters, each built on 4 midsections. Obviously the frigate is a bit more valuable in parts usage As for the interior; the cabin has interior but it's not very accesible, I think i'll increase the budget a bit on this one to improve it a bit.
  7. [pid][/pid] 129D What can I say... great target for pirates This is what you could call a low budget ship, I was out of jumper plates so I didn't use any (check the offset under the angled broadside (that's right, there is no offset). I didn't have any horizontal hinge plates in black nor white so I used red ones which messed up the bow section a bit (the red-blue section). I was out of cannon hatches so I only took pictures of the starboard side (the other side doesn't have any). Well, that's about it, I thought it was funny to mention that I also brought this ship to Brickmania some weeks ago: Now as for indexing this ship... there are no Barquentines indexed so far (maybe I made this ship just because of that but I can't remember ). I'm curious what will happen now (more at mocpages)
  8. Very nice, looks like an honorable profession
  9. It's very difficult putting a price on my creations, I always used a great deal of the LEGO I already had. Either way, they are priceless to me
  10. Hmmm, so shiny, it looks so professional, it would certainly make a realistic official set
  11. yeah, appearently it can take up to two weeks before an account becomes active I couldn't enter the first JRC because of that back when I made my account.
  12. This should probably not be in the MOC-forum (an admin/moderator will probably address you for that). I posted my Flying Dutchman on Cuusoo and I saw another ship from a member here. I thought about adding some other ships as well but I figured that one ship will stand out more and attract more attention that way. It won't be easy reaching 10000 supporters though.
  13. Awesome, it seems that the merchant ship has weather gauge What a spectacular battle, I love that first picture with the lighting. Ever since I saw SlyOwl's entry I've been considering making such battle scene too, Now I am completely convinced, A ship just looks so cool when engaged in battle. Putting the ships under an angle really adds to the lively aspect like there really is wind. It most have been a lot of work to get the water-scape right
  14. My Flying Dutchman has not been indexed yet. It's a three masted galleon
  15. That spring absorber is too long and too strong, my cannons need to stay IN the ship you know At first I was working on the technic of my IR cannons but this other idea Timecruiser showed is more interesting as it is more compact and might even work .better
  16. This is great, I was working on a construction to motorize it myself but this is much more elegant and compact I'm going to try this right away, thank you very much!
  17. The curve looks nice so far, I suggest you don't wait too long with making the keel, you can rely on it considering lenght and shape. As for using captain greenhairs technique; I found a way to apply it in a different way to SNOT slope-built hulls: Costum hull Maybe you can use it. As you can see I attached the hinge plates (car roor hinges in this case) to the upper slope pieces, the hull, instead of a central structure. I don't know yet if it's a good Idea though, a central structure is safer considering stability issues that might occur later. Keep it up!
  18. A small vent just in front of the cannons would work, but I'm not really ready to get myself a smoking machine Maybe but automating it would be very difficult (get gunpowder in, cannonball, stamp it ? light it...) I might try incorporating them into a smaller ship. Thanks A cross-section ? that is a good Idea, although the hold would be full of mechanics. Yeah, I'm not quitting the pirate theme, I probably just had a weak moment
  19. [pid][/pid] Cannons 3B I have been experimenting with automated features for my pirateships again. Quiting the pirate theme, what was I thinking Check this out: I used spring bricks to throw back the cannons, much more realistic than a motor pulling them back (see my IR broadside cannons). When cannons are in possition they would stick out by just one stud out of a ship's hull, I did some small builds and it is possible to integrate it in a captain greenhair's frigate, which would be awesome, combining cool features with that great shaping and historical accuracy. With a motor I could push the cannons into place, I just need to design a construction that pushes and lets go so the springs can do their recoiling task Possibilities are limited though, I figured it's not worth the effort to install them in a ship because most of the time the cannon deck is covered so you'd see only the end of the cannon barrel, the recoiling effect would not be noticed. Cannons also need space to recoil so you'll need a rather big ship, so far my only ship that is eligible is my Flying Dutchman but you can imagine I'm not so eager to break open that ship Besides I don't have enough of those spring pieces anyway. However I think it's a great detail for land based mocs. I can design a structure that pushes the cannons in place and then lets them go. use a NEXT for that so you can add the sound effects you heared in the movie and there you go, sure would make a pirate layout that little bit more spectacular (always wanted to use this "emoticon" )
  20. Great to see you here as well, I'll be looking out for your topics ;)

  21. Ah, I see you managed to apply my system succesfully, I like how the cannon hatches open, I see that there are exterior gears to do that though, it's hard to avoid that but still... Keep up the good work and welcome to Classic Pirates
  22. Last saturday I was at Brickmania, I met Captain Greenhair and Bonaparte Napoleon and on this occasion I took this picture: Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion and Flying Dutchman engaging in battle Unfortunatly I totally forgot to bring my camera to the event so this is taken with my gsm, nevertheless I like this picture a lot because it really captures the bulkiness of the flying dutchman, which many other pictures fail to capture. More in my brickshelf folder. This was also the first time I transported the flying dutchman over great distance, when I arrived the prow was pretty much demolished and several details from the stern detached but overall it sticked together quite well. Oh and also important, my Flying Dutchman was the biggest sailing ship of all bigger that the spanish galleon, bigger than the Prince of Whales though it may not look like that because the FD doesn't have sails yet. An extra motivation to get working on those sails, it will attract more attention that way I hope I have it finished completely by next year (which is very realistic).
  23. yes it is, thanks, I got it when I posted my finished Flying Dutchman

Wth are you talking about? :D :D

  24. Though I'm very honored that my ship is used as a reference I must agree with others that these two ships cannot be compared so easely, I'm not the expert and I haven't tried a ship-of-the-line yet so I can't really make a valuable judgement on this. I did view some ship-of-the-line schematics a while ago and I think I'd make the hull a lot different from the Dutchman's. As for the tumblehome shape, I used a variant of Captain Greenhairs hinge technique but I used car hinge plates, which, like Frank Brick Wright stated, indeed change angle, over the lenght of the ship, not always as smooth but still. On top of that I used minifigure legs to change angle higher in the ship. Anyway, keep it up!
  25. Great, I'll be there on Saterday as well. That conversation is a good Idea
