Heroica RPG - Quest #56: The Stealer of Senses
joeshmoe554 replied to Endgame's topic in The Heroica Archive
Jeaux arrived in the clearing to find all of the other party members had already arrived. He had met the knight shortly after he had first arrived in the hall. Seeing how restless he was for action before, Jeaux thought it would be good for him to get out and burn off some energy. He was less familiar with the other 3 members of the party. "Greetings, my name is Jeaux. I assume you are the other heroes who were hired by the town watch?" As he waited for their reply he took in his surroundings. He had never seen such beauty in nature before. He was not unfamiliar with trees and forests, but plants that glowed like this after the sun had descended below the horizon was a new sight for him and it did not seem natural. He noticed a spider nearby, whistling while he worked diligently on his web. The spider seemed to glow with the same radiance as the plants, a bright florescent green that pulsed like a heart beating. Jeaux knew the person who had hired them was most likely waiting further down the passage way, but he thought it wouldn't hurt in the meantime to try and gather more information as to the nature of the quest and the one who had contracted them. He asked the spider nearby if he (or she) had seen someone come by earlier in the night and what the spider knew about the individual. -
People always say that you should never meet your heroes as they tend to disappoint and I thinking Jeaux is learning that lesson at the moment. He's heard legends about the "Heroes of Heroica", but legends tend to embellish the positive details and skip over the negative ones. I think the fact that groups of people go on quests together can start to form generations as those groups will level at around the same rate. There is some definite crossover, but the level disparities do somewhat define those generations. The number of new players could also follow a peak/valley pattern. I was really surprised how many people showed up after I posted. When I posted in the Hero Statistics thread I was the first new person in over a month. Since I've posted there 4 more people have in the time span of 2 weeks.

Jeaux wanted desperately to get away. He did not often get so involved in other people's lives and did not have even the slightest notion how to help this lady. She was clearly suffering from some sort of mental illness, but whether it was merely a reaction to some traumatic event or a product of dark magic was impossible to tell. As badly as he wanted to run, he did not. He could not help but feel sorry for her and wanted to help her if he could, the operative word being IF. "I don't know what I can do for you, I do not have any experience in these things. Perhaps if you talked about it with someone it may help?"

To retrieve the precious. The entire time I was reading that post, I kept expecting to find some reference to the precious in there.

Jeaux heard one of the recently returned heroes cry out in what would best be described as agony. He glanced in her direction, but he could not see whom she was so angry with. From his vantage point it almost looked like she was yelling at herself. Perhaps there was more to the patrons of Heroica than the stories had let on? He walked over to the elf to see if she might need some help. "Is someone bothering you?" He asked, hoping the answer would be in the affirmative. As the alternative was a far more disturbing thought.

I am new here so I may be wrong, but I would guess one can sell an item to another hero for less than the purchase price but greater than the selling price.

Jeaux stopped for a moment to read the 2 new postings on the questing board. It seemed someone was looking for unknown heroes, a description that fit him rather well. There was another quest asking for heroes with good relations to the Bonaparte family. Jeaux had heard the name and read a previous quest log dealing with that family, but he had not had the chance to meet any of them in person. He signed up for Quest #57: Green and Gone, before returning to his drink.

Heroes seemed to be pouring into the hall left and right. Jeaux could see that most of them were obvious veterans from the interactions between themselves and the other heroes, but there seemed to be a few individuals as unfamiliar to the hall as himself. With the surge of warm bodies came the sound of conversation. He was able to pick up a few words here and there. The shade he had talked to earlier was reflecting on his life in a far off land with a rather well dressed elf. Thanks to Jeaux's training as a ranger he was able to understand and speak almost any language, but it was remarkable how much of the shade's story was untranslatable. He must be very far from his home indeed for his tale to be so foreign. Another raider, with the same sour expression as the one Jeaux had talked to earlier seemed to be getting into an argument with something that by any account should not even be able to move, let alone speak. It unnerved Jeaux a little, but that was the big city. Every day was full of new sights both wondrous and terrifying. The raider then left to join another table with the unpleasant man Jeaux had met earlier and a rather rotund knight.

Jeaux signs up for Quest 56: Stealer of Senses! Jeaux saw the notice being nailed up on the Quest Board. It seemed someone had need of the services Heroica provides, but did not have the funds, or was not willing to provide them, to hire any of the veteran heroes that seemed to populate the Hall at the moment. Every heroes career must begin somewhere and it seemed this would be the start of his. He walked up to the board and using the quill sitting nearby signed his name on the dotted line.

"I came in search of answers for the questions that plague my past. Who I am and who I was." Jeaux stared into the distance for a moment, before taking a sip of the drink before him. As the liquid neared the smooth wooden surface of his face a circle appeared, black as a overcast night. When the beverage came into contact with that ebony mark it seemed to vanish into nothingness. He set down the drink and looked back to the knight. "I look forward to working alongside you in the future, perhaps we will find some of the adventure that you seek."

Jeaux heard the new arrival exclaim in a weary voice that he was in desperate need of some entertainment. The hall had seemed rather quiet since Jeaux had arrived, and there did seem to be little need of heroes at the moment. Thinking about the current situation Jeaux surmised that was probably a good thing, as the work of Heroica spawned from the problems in the world, and a lack of work would seem to indicate a lack of problems, or that the problems in the world were already in the capable hands of the heroes that normally populated the hall. He was confident someone would be in need of the hall's services before too long as peace was often short lived. "Hello Sir Knight, my name is Jeaux. It is good to see another fresh face here, I was beginning to think I might be the only one. What brings you to Heroica?"

Has there ever been an item that was a shield weapon? Basically instead of a sword and a shield a knight would wield one weapon that served both purposes.

Jeaux wandered the stalls taking stock of many items for sale here. He was looking at the some potions, when he heard a voice nearby proclaim, "Hey wood for brains, what are you doin lookin at potions, those are for us real folk. A phony man like you needs tools to fix 'imself up, else you might become a stiff, or rather, stiffer for that matter, nyeh nyeh" Jeaux saw a small booth labeled Gnomeo's Toolshed with a little man in front. He was as short as his beard was long, and seemed to be laughing at he must have thought was a rather clever comment. Jeaux had often felt like an imposter, though how could he be any different. He had always behaved as he thought he should, but how could someone be true to himself if he doesn't know who he is. He approached the gnome, ready to impress upon him the importance of good manners, when his eyes fell on a bedroll on one of the back counters. Jeaux could not afford a room with a proper bed as he had not managed to find a job yet in town, and he was growing rather weary of sleeping on cobblestone. He asked the runt, "How much for the bedroll?" The gnome replied quickly, "What would you need a bedroll for, on second thought why do I care, 5 gold pieces and it's your's" Jeaux reluctantly handed him 5 gold taking the bedroll in return, he glanced down at the 5 gold coins remaining in his pocket. It was a good thing the drinks were free. He started to quickly walk away as gnomeo called out behind him, "When you get your head bashed in, feel free to stop by for some repairs. Just remember to bring your gold!"

In the rules it states that Lucky and Jinxed only affect the battle die. I don't think I have seen any scrolls used in the quests I have read thus far, but I thought they behaved like bombs and did not utilize the battle die. Of course, I'm a newbie so you should probably just ignore what I say. And a question of my own, are there any recommendations on items a new player should pick up before their first quest, or is one better off waiting till one has more gold to spend?

Thanks for the compliments, I spent a decent amount of time reading past quests and planning out a character before posting so I could come up with someone who was fun to play and make sure I would have some growth potential so I didn't end up painting myself into a corner. I have a couple ideas for the character's personality, back story, and where I want to go with him, and I figure his amnesia will let me figure out the rest later.

Jeaux thought on the shade's words. Here was someone who might better understand him, who might be able to help him retrieve his identity. The shade had mentioned something about beings comprised metal and flesh that confused him. He wasn't quite sure what parallels the hero could see between them and himself, but he dismissed the thought quickly as the meaning must have been lost in translation. "Fortunately my name is one of the things I do remember. I have some memories of my past but they are... fuzzy, almost broken in a sense. I remember my parents voices but not their names or faces. I remember growing up in the forest, but I cannot remember which one. The earliest clear memory I have is waking up on the side of a road about a year ago. I had been severely injured and an old, odd Wizard managed to save my life. I traveled with him until I was healthy enough to venture out on my own and seek some of the answers to who I once was." "As for the individual named Wren, I've spent some time in the Eubric library trying to improve my knowledge of this world in the hopes of adding some clarity to my memories, and I remember reading a bit about her kidnapping heroes and pitting them against each other for sport, but that is all I know. I am afraid to say I have neither read nor heard anything about the doors of chaos."

Jeaux looked at the large metasimian. He had seen a few intimidating characters since entering the city, this was after all a port that seemed to draw all sorts, but this person was quite possibly the largest he had laid eyes on yet. While his outward appearance was alarming his behavior and the look on his face seemed to reflect a kindness that matched his size. "It's a pleasure to meet you Hoptet, My name is Jeaux. I've only recently arrived in Eubric, and am still learning my way around."
-
It's not so bad, 2/3 of the people he's interacted with so far have seemed rather pleasant, and he has fairly thick skin (It's made of wood after all )

The shadow appeared on Jeaux's face again, this time forming into a simple mask with a rather large smile. Jeaux laughed at the question, before responding, "My mommy and daddy did. I could go into more details, but I'm not sure that would be an appropriate conversation for this venue."
-
A small dark shadow appeared on the automaton's face. It moved across the smooth white wood like ink running over a canvas before resolving itself into the shape of a question mark. Jeaux was slightly confused by what the man said. The question mark dissappated as Jeaux shrugged off the comment assuming it must simply be an expression he was unfamiliar with. The wizard whom up until recently had been his traveling companion had used many similar expressions, equally odd in their meaning. A couple that stood out his memory were "Leapin Lizards" and "I'll be a monkey's uncle". The tone in the raider's voice was clear, he obviously had a distaste for strangers and was not likely to warm up to Jeaux any time soon. Though what could one expect from a raider, they made their living by stealing from the honest. Not exactly a friendly bunch. "Just trying to make some light conversation friend, but if you'd rather drink alone then don't let me stop you." Jeaux heard a clicking sound that resembled speech from off to his right. He turned to see a short shadowy figure wearing a cape and an oddly shaped helmet on his head. Jeaux had never seen an individual like this before, or least he was pretty sure he hadn't. Though if this were one of the many heroes of these hallowed halls, then he definitely deserved Jeaux's respect. "Good to see not everyone here is quite so combative. I'm a man with many questions in search of some answers. The adventures had here are known throughout the land and my hope is those adventures may help reveal some of my past."
-
Jeaux looked down the bar at the newcomer who had just strolled in. His clothes were simple and cheap, unlike the rest of him. The sword he carried in his hand and the axe clasped to his body both looked sharp and well made. This was a warrior Jeaux thought, a man who cared more about his fighting ability than his outward appearance. He could see from the way others in the hall interacted with the raider that he was not new to Heroica, but had likely been away for some time. Jeaux knew it was beneficial to have connections, and since he was new in town that was something he lacked at the moment. He gave a slight wave to the stranger saying, "My name's Jeaux, I just got into town a short while ago."

This model is utterly awesome! I especially like the flying pig.
