Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Roger_Smith replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
With all the conflicting rumors and reports about which set will retire next, did anyone ever think that they might actually discontinue two sets at more or less the same time? I seem to remember someone posting a list that showed that two of the first three modulars (I think Market Street and Green Grocer, but I might be wrong) were discontinued within a few months of each other. Maybe something like this will happen again? -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Roger_Smith replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Luckily, I ordered Town Hall from S@H and it's on its way, so I'm fine either way. It was the last modular I was missing, though I still have to build the Parisian Restaurant (and the Haunted House). I can't imagine TH disappearing quite so soon, though. After all, it IS included on the back box art of Parisian Restaurant, and if there were plans to retire ot within a few months of PR's release they surely wouldn't have put it on there. Why waste the opportunity to advertise a building that will be around longer instead? -
Thanks for the input. As I already mentioned, since I already have the extra Pet Shop lying around, going for sand blue will be a lot cheaper for me than going for sand green. I was just wonderung how many pieces I'd need to get extra (will have to do a detailed plan there once I get around to it), but mainly 1x1s and 1x2s sounds really manageable. Thanks!
-
Yeah... but that wasn't my question .
-
How did you do that? I guess you had to buy some more sand blue, right? I can't see the sand blue bricks of the small 16x32 Pet Shop being sufficient to build the sand green parts of the 32x32 Green Grocer. Reason I'm asking is I recently bought a second (used) Pet Shop and have been thinking about wether or not to tackle the "Blue Grocer" once I finished building the other buildings.

Finally pulled the trigger on the Haunted House. Was kinda afraid it'd be gone before I'd get it, so when I saw it for 167,95 MISB incl. shipping on Ebay I couldn't say no. Unfortunately, the box took a dent during shipping, but I'm looking forward to building it anyway :)

Does Lego still make non-minifig printed parts?
Roger_Smith replied to danth's topic in General LEGO Discussion
How do you get 8 train systems? I only count 6 (Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany and Austria). SBB and CFF is just one logo, of the swiss federal railways. Nowadays, they even adorn their rolling stock with "SBB CFF FFS" (see: http://upload.wikime...SBB_CFF_FFS.jpg). All three acronyms mean "Swiss federal railways" in the three principal languages spoken in Switzerland (german, french and italian). Kinda curious that "Danske Statsbaner" (DSB) is absent. -
Well, it's nothing like Green Grocer or Cafe Corner, but even if the price for a MISB Fire Brigade only reaches 300$/€, that still means that if you bought two, you basically got the one you keep for yourself for free. Not the worst deal, imo. And FB has been off the market for only a few months now and the price already is up 100 bucks.

LEGO in Film & TV: Index of Appearances

Looked a lot like 6386 - Police Command Base from 1986: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/6386_Police_Command_Base Which was a real nice touch, since that scene was set in his childhood home which would have his old toys. The older Sheldon is more into building his Lego Death Star :D -
Awesome build, nice attention to detail overall and a brilliant tribute to one of the greatest Space themes ever.

Hat Shop - Modular building built with vintage parts
Roger_Smith replied to Roger_Smith's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks, all of you @slovakiasteph: I really like the look of those shutter pieces aswell, I have a whole bunch of them in blue. Unfortunately, there are no proper frames for them (as far as I know, at least), so you have to use the 1x1x2 hinge bricks to attach them. So having several of them next to each other unfortunately leads to unslightly gaps in between the individual cupboards. But as a stand-alone cupboard I think they work quite well. @brickcitydepot: Thanks. I was going for a german/european architectural style, as that's where I am from @whydoris: Yeah, the yellowing can really be a problem. I have a couple of white bricks (not used in this build) whose color is wayyy closer to tan than to white.- 19 replies

Good work here, you really managed to capture modern architecture quite well - its good sides, that is, not the aspects that still refer to the brutalism of 60ies and 70ies. Your building has a nice, varied facade. Looking forward to see an interior, if you should make one :)
-
Good looking modular, eliza! The front has a nice 1920ies/1930ies US feel to it, would propably look right at home next to Fire Brigade. And the interior is just lovely, lots of well thought-through details

Hat Shop - Modular building built with vintage parts
Roger_Smith replied to Roger_Smith's topic in LEGO Town
Thank you The tap piece most likely came from #920 Alpha Rocket Base from 1979: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=920-2 I have four of those. It's a nice little piece, it's only downside is that the end of the tap sticks out more than one brick's width, thus it requires a basin at least two bricks wide in front. That's why I puit it to the side of the sink here.- 19 replies

Hi there, this is a MOC modular building with a different approach. But first, a little background: After I came out of my Dark Ages roughly a year ago, I mainly started doing two things - building classic space sets, and getting into the official modular buildings (I now have four and counting). I once built a MOD of the Ice Planet Deep Freeze Defender, but up until now, I never built a real, aspiring MOC. I'm lucky to still have all my old Lego from when I was a kid, a lot of which was handed down from our old neighbour, so I ended up with a nice collection of vintage parts and sets, all of them somewhere between 20 and 40 years old. I also bought a couple of bulk lots from Ebay with more stuff from the 80ies/early 90ies, with the goal to get more classic space stuff. Building the official modulars and also seeing the amazing MOCs posted here, I naturally got itchy and wanted to create my own modular MOC. The only downside was, apart from the pieces from the 4 modulars I own, I don't have any modern bricks. And building something in LDD and then buying the necessary bricks sounded nice, but I had to find out that I do not have the patience to design anything worthwhile in LDD. So I decided to try to build a modular MOC using just the old vintage pieces I already have in abundance. Here are the two most challenging problems I faced building this: Colors: The 80ies and early 90ies were the time of black, white, yellow, blue, red and grey, with green and brown just starting to make appearances (I have very, very few pieces in those two colors). So I had to find a color scheme with those colors that would work. I decided on white and black, with some red detailing. SNOT: I definately wanted to do some SNOT building in my modular. However this is not too easy as a lot of the useful pieces that we have nowadays were simply not available back then. The only really useful SNOT pieces were the classic headlight brick, the old bracket (http://www.bricklink...Item.asp?P=3956) and the hinge brick (http://www.bricklink...m.asp?P=3937c01). Against my original intent I ended up doing one bricklink order after all, but it was mainly for the dark grey and light grey tiles used on the pavement and on top of each module. But, enough babble, here's the Hat Shop - my first MOC since coming out of my Dark Ages I took some inspiration from the Pet Shop, mainly in how the shop sign is built (though mine is built slightly differently) and the general floor plan inside. Ground floor detail. First floor (european counting ) detail. The classic windows on the left and right are built in sideways using several headlight bricks. As a sideeffect, the middle window got drapes. The whole construction is very sturdy and stable . Top floor detail. Keeping with the tradition of some of the official modulars, the back is rather plain. I used old doors from the H0 scale days as windows, which works rather well, I think. Inside the Hat Shop. As I already mentioned, this building uses old bricks, a lot of them from my childhood. While I sorted out any really damaged bricks (teeth marks, sticker residue and the like), I got pretty much every level of yellowing on the white bricks. I tried to use the yellowed one on the side of the building, where they won't be visible when its on display with the other modulars, and the white ones for the front & back facades. In this picture you can see that the store sign is built similar to, but not exactly like the one in the Pet Shop. Moving up to the second floor. It hold a spacious kitchen with a small kitchen table. The blue and grey color scheme of the kitchen gives it a nice, Spacey feel...kinda Classic, really... . . . Uh-oh... Moving up to the upper floor. It holds a combined living and bedroom with a TV, sofa and sofa table, bed, chest, some slightly odd pictures on the wall and a parrot. Another detail shot of the roof. The greebling atop the windows was the last thing I built last night, I had a simpler design of the facade at first, but it didn't look right. Here's some shots with the official modulars. I think my Hat Shop fits in surprisingly well . The difference between the old and new greys. I hope you enjoyed my MOC, and look forward to reading your comments Cheers, Roger

Great building, nice interior details, too (I was about to asked, but then I clicked one of the flicks links and found the other pictures) :)

I'm almost finished building this beauty (Christmas/Birthday present to myself), and I'm having tons of fun. I don't really understand why it got criticized for lacking creative building techniques. Sure, maybe there weren't any new techniques used and all the tricks were well known to long-time builders, but it's still a really interesting and mostly non-repetitive build that to me is up to the standards I expect of a modular. Building Pet Shop and especially the Grand Emporium felt much more straight-forward... I may or may not mod my Palace Cinema a little, though, the ground floor feels way to empty to me. It could use some seating opportunities for the moviegoers to hang out before the autitorium is opened, or maybe a small bathroom... The auditorium itself could use some modding aswell, but I may leave it as it is as I kinda like it.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Roger_Smith replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
That's a gorgeous building, but its design shares a lot of DNA with the Fire Brigade - front facade segmented into three tiers, contrasting stomework colors at the edges... it's a New York building, just as the Fire Brigade I think a Police Station or maybe doctor's office (in lieu of a fullblown hospital, which I think can't be done on a 32x32 footürint without it looking ridiculous next to the other modulars) are very likely to happen next, but I think (and hope) that the architecture of the next modular will have unique architectural features, just as most of the other modulars. -
Thanks for this whole thread again :) The last update made me want to go and dig out the pieces for LL918 from my collection. I'm missing the 4x4 cone, but the rest should all be there. Will be nice displaying it side by side with the LL928. And I need to get more of those cones :D

The antenna goes for ~10€ in german stores, which is just a big NO for me. Especially since it's very fragile, apparently, so there's a risk of it being broken during shipping. I included the plate in a Bricklink order I placed yesterday (my first Bricklink order ever - yay ). The cones may take some more time, only few shops have them, and none of them had a sufficient amount of the other stuff I wanted. But I'm in no hurry. I had my old parts for this set set aside for pretty much a year now. Then two weeks ago I won a bulk Ebay auction of 3kg of old Lego that proved to be a veritably bonanza of old space parts, so I was able to source almost all the missing pieces from there. Some sets that were in that lot include 918, 1593, 6927 and 6930, but there are more - I found no less than 27 complete classic space figures in red, white, yellow and blue in various conditions from near mint to badly worn logos in there (and another 6 incomplete figures missing their helmet / air tank)

Whoa... both CC and GG doubled up AND enlarged? That's like 3+ grand in bricks right there . Me wanna have And the supersized Cafe Corner looks absoutely amazing, makes for a real grand building in that scale. The rest of the town is very impressive aswell, some really nice MOC modulars (moculars?) that blend in perfectly with the official stuff.

Absolutely stunning modular. Love all the details, and some effects are great - for instance the snot-built floor in the apartment that looks like a wooden floor.

Yay, Classic Space Restoration is back! Can't wait for the shots of the finished model. Recently I finally managed to get most of the missing parts for my 928, which I built last week. Beautiful design. I only need to get three more of those big cones for the underside, the antenna and one 6x12 plate (substituted it with a 6x4 and a 6x8) and it will all be there. I also got the printed LL918 bricks in pristine condition in a lot of classic Lego I scored on Ebay, so I'll very likely build that one aswell.
