I'd love to see 47753 Wedge 4 x 4 No Top Studs in LBG. Can't get enough parts in LBG...

I picked up the Bounty Hunter and FO battlepacks when I was at the Lego Store to get my Saturn V on Thursday morning. I still haven't opened the A-Wing or Y-Wing I got on May 4th yet, though! Not sure which SW set will be the first one I crack open...

21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V (LEGO Ideas)
manglegrat replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I got mine this morning after lining up at the Calgary Lego store about 10min before opening. By then, I was 16th in-line, and there were maybe 25 by the time it opened. Someone came out when there were ~20 of us in line to let us know there was a limit of 1 each, but there's be enough for us all (got a cheer for that!) - they had an initial delivery of 20 but another drop of 50 or so was due to arrive in just a few minutes. They let us in to the store in small groups. I heard one staff member say they were pretty sure they'd all be sold out today... I grabbed this plus the 2 new SW battlepacks (First Order & Bounty Hunters). So looking forward to building this. Big-kid *yay* from me! -
I'm not feeling the love for these sets either - you're not alone! Some minifigs are cool (Shuttle Pilot, Walker Driver, & BB droid), though I'll take a pass on Snoke so far. Unless they grow (a lot) on me between now and release I think I'll only be BL'ing a few of the new minifigs, unless the economics of that makes no sense (then I'd just use the sets for parts for MOC'ing).

REVIEW: 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V
manglegrat replied to Bob De Quatre's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Oh yes, this will be mine. -
Thanks @ExcelsiorUK! Yeah, there's not much B5 MOC action out there nowadays, even on Flickr, Brickshelf & MOC Pages. I've found a couple of recent large-scale models on the LDD gallery (Omega-class here, Nova-class here - kudos to that designer!), and there are a few older B5 MOCs on a Flickr group here, but I figure there's only a very small number of B5 fans who are also LEGO fanatics out there any more - it's been over 20 years. (I remember watching it religiously on Channel 4 in the UK when I was at Uni... Wow, I'm old.) These particular models are a pretty big investment and so far, only one person I know of has built the Agamemnon based on my LDD file - he messaged me a pic of it today, which is great! My Agamemnon Bricksafe folder has been visited ~50 times and the Schwarzkopf one ~60 (don't know if that includes my views). I've posted renders on several Flickr groups of both ships, and they only have a max of 630 views, so nowadays it's a pretty obscure show. Sadly, I fear B5's time in the spotlight has long since passed. But I'll always be here for it.

[LDD] Mortesv's CR90 corvette (reverse-engineered version)
manglegrat replied to EKae's topic in LEGO Star Wars
It's just the extension of the files that LDD creates - since you already have them, if you can log in to Rebrickable then you're good to go. You do need an account to do this but it's easy & free, so once you log in, go to the "My Account/Custom Lists" page from the menu bar along the top, click the "Add a new list" button on the bottom left. Then you can "Edit list details" to name it, etc. or just click on "Import/Delete Parts" to get the the page where you can point it at your LDD(LXF) file and "Append Parts" to upload or or "Replace Parts" to flush the list & upload the file. Then it gives you a page with some notes on any ID translations it did for you or any errors it found, which if it went OK (usually) you can close and then you can see the parts list, which you can sort, print, etc. It highlights any colour errors or rare parts in the pic of each part. It's not perfect (if it included the length/width for larger parts that'd be awesome) but I find it really helpful for checking when I've used LDD in extended mode and ended up with a part that's not available in the colour I "painted" it, or I ended up picking a rare or old variant of a part that can be swapped for another more available one. Hope that helps! -
[LDD] Mortesv's CR90 corvette (reverse-engineered version)
manglegrat replied to EKae's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Watching this thread with interest... Loving the collaborative nature of this build, guys - this is exactly what communities like this should be for - Yay you! I'm also wondering what Mortesv's own version will look like as well! What I do to avoid annoyance with LDD BOMs - I import the LXF file into a "custom list" on my Rebrickable account, which does all the work of cross-referencing the LDD part IDs to Bricklink part IDs, plus it gives you the opportunity to fix the occasional colour problem or part variant (the a-b-c thing) mistake. Takes some of the heavy lift out of the equation. -
Alternative turntables
manglegrat replied to Merlin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Cool! Another Omega fan! What scale are you looking to build it to? I built a 117-stud (95cm), 4700 part, non-motorized Agamemnon (based on Ryan Olsen's original SHIPtember one from last year) using a Technic frame and two Type 3 turntables for the rotating section, which may be motorizable with a few modifications. The turntables are concealed under the bodywork, but make it able to easily rotate the section even with the weight of the brick-built fuselage - it's heavy but quite well balanced so when I reposition it it stays put. However, there's a bit of "flex" between the two component parts of the turntables when it's moving, so with all that weight and the vertical orientation, I'm not sure if it'd be smooth or wobbly if it was motorized... Take a look at the thread on the Agamemnon, which has links to the WIP pics of the internals on Flickr, my LXF files, etc. if you're interested. I also just finished a Nova Class Dreadnought variant as well (here) - non-motorized, of course. However, I'm assuming you're thinking of motorizing both the rotating section and the 12 gun turrets, maybe some lights, etc? You'd need to build quite a bit bigger than Ryan's/my scale for all that! If you use using anything bigger than the Type 3's then you're probably looking at a much bigger fuselage, anyway. I've also seen some pics of a much larger one by Brian Cook - this - on the B5 Flickr group, so maybe that's more the size you need... Maybe Brian can tell you what he used, if you can get in touch with him? Anyway, all the best for your build! -
Sorry for the bump, but I finally went ahead and built the Schwarzkopf in the brick: There's some custom sticker action I'm quite happy with - front & rear: It makes a very nice companion to the Agamemnon (which is on the other side of the fireplace).

Post your general LEGO Star Wars questions here
manglegrat replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I skipped the Rebels one. However, while not quite 4x, there was 7667 back in 2008 with 3x OT Stormies. I got one of those off of BrickLink a few years ago (I'm old) but they're not really a good value proposition nowadays because of age/rarity. And of course, there's no leg printing in that vintage of Stormie... -
Bummer! I wonder if they'd still be there if you changed the angle a little or if it's just a one-off coincidence... Ah well!
-
Picked up a bulk lot (43lbs!) from a local ad site (Kijiji) for $60CAD that has the parts for 10195 (dropship with AT-OT) and 7964 (Republic Frigate) in it, along with tons (well, pounds ) of other parts from other SW sets (e.g. clone turbo tank micro), plus some City & Bionicle stuff. No minifigs that I can see so far, but I don't collect PT figs so no worries. Once I've got it all separated & cleaned, this will be awesome for MOCs. I doubt I'll ever make a bigger score on the local ads than this!

Cool model! Like the asymmetric mono colourscheme, and I'm very curious what part you used to get the triangular outlines on those white circular 2x2 tiles on the sides... love the texture it adds!
-
Oh, tell me about it. I could tweak and tweak... but I'm sticking a fork in it, it's done! I'm considering trying to do a similar-scale Cylon BaseStar now...

OK, I'm happy with the next iteration. ;) The head has been lengthened by 2 studs, the "lower jaw" has been redesigned, a couple of tweaks to the topside and sidepod supports (plus a black strip where the lateral hangar bay is - I'd do a sticker to make that look better IRL). Underside comparison: Think it's time to move on...

I spent a few hours mucking around with the narrower head today - kinda disappointed in how it turned out so that idea was a bust. I think a longer "flat" section on the wider head might do the trick, and I'm still itching to try a redesign of the "lower jaw". May try those two ideas next...

Thanks! You make a good point. The lengths are close to reference but the head is chunky-looking, which makes it look proportionally a bit "off"... The reference shot I have shows the engines are just shorter than the nose and the midsection slightly shorter again, which this model is - ~22 studs for the engine section vs 24 studs for the head, and the middle section is 19 studs from the back of the head to the front of the engine blocks. As it happens, I originally did a slightly smaller (2 studs narrower, 1-2 plates lower, ~1 stud longer because of the shallower angles) head design in an earlier iteration that looks more svelte, and if attached to the same body would make the head look proportionally longer. In the LDD snapshot below, the current design (more or less) is on top, the diet version is beneath. I built the lower variant first as I guessed the "bottom" width, but when I replicated the "lower jaw" section of the head from the original designer's pics I found out that to fit together the top needed to be wider by a couple of studs. Then I did the upper variant. If I went back to the smaller head I'd redesign the lower jaws to slim them down, too. Shrinking both would make the head less "chibi" and rebalance the proportions. That could also increase the wife-acceptability-factor as well (quote: "it's too stubby"). There are also some parts you can't get in these colours (4x4 bow-angle bricks in LBG for the engines, some dark-red parts), so building the current design IRL is not on the cards for now. Maybe it's an opportunity to keep tweaking it digitally... What do you guys think, should I give it a go?

Thanks! (Your Vipers are v.cool too, btw - I followed your thread ) Those side-pods are quite heavy with all the internal parts required to get the offsets to work, so it was something I was a bit worried about - the original design didn't look like there was enough structure to work so I beefed it up, but due to the angles it might still be a bit hit & miss... Not swooshable. I wouldn't want to have to apply the Kragle!

I bought the latest Sail Barge set back when it came out and immediately MODded it to have the original front end, as the new one is ugly as sin. I also widened the top deck by one stud each side and beefed-up the back-end a bit to close the gaps - I think that's the MOD which kickstarted me building stuff that's not just an original Lego set: MODs, MOCs, SHIPs, buying parts from Bricklink, etc... It's been an expensive and awesome journey, all from that one small step!

Me again - exercising some more SciFi TV show nerdism. As I was wrapping up the Schwarzkopf, I found an awesome LDD MOC on Flickr by CK-MCMLXXXI (don't know if they're on Eurobricks), and decided to try to reverse-engineer it, similar to how I ended up building Agamemnon - except in this case I only had 3 pics (4 angles) to go from, and no clues to go by for the internals. The designer wasn't sharing the LDD files (which is totally fair - I won't share mine for this either to stay true to that) but I said I'd love to build it, and they challenged me to do so... Challenge accepted! I managed to make something pretty close to their original but had to make some changes as I couldn't make all the bodywork angles match the original design perfectly. Some of the angles for the head were a nightmare to figure out - I had to do an ugly colourbarf mock-up IRL to test whether it was even possible or not! But yep, all the connections are legal in LDD this time - and I think there's enough clutch-power and structure in the 6 supports to hold up the sidepods IRL. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out - Bluerender did a great job for the shots below, after I did some lighting experimentation. It's 3455 bricks, but I'm not sure they're all available in all the colours - haven't checked that yet... LxWxH it's 65x35x14 studs/bricks, or 522x280x136mm, according to MLCad. I'd add some stickers to it if I was actually building it IRL, but I currently have no plans to do so (the wife thinks it looks too "stubby" )... More pics including some LDD WIP screenshots are available in my Flickr album, and here's a 360 render as a bonus: Hope the other BSG series fans out there like it! ;) I guess now I've done "The Beast" I should try the Galactica and/or a Cylon Basestar someday... if I could do them in the same scale that'd be pretty sweet, but that may be a stretch-goal too far!

Thanks, @Venunder! I mentioned this in the other thread, but the Agamemnon (the bigger one) was originally built by Ryan Olsen so credit to him for the design for that one (plus stickers). I'll take credit for reverse-engineering it into LDD and all the rest, though! As to instructions, I'd rather leave it as a challenge for other builders. They're not super-complex but sequencing the build around some of the connections in the internal structure is important - particularly in the Agamemnon. The Schwarzkopf will be easier, though I haven't built it IRL. Anyone can use LDD to build them - my tips are to work from the inside out (turntables first for the Agamemnon), get the structure up onto the stands early, be patient and expect rework. The LDD-generated instructions are not to be trusted except for non-structural bits! The LXF and sticker files plus parts lists are available for anyone who wants them - there may be some minor errors (but hey, it's all free): Agamemnon: Bricksafe folder Rebrickable parts list Schwarzkopf: Bricksafe folder Rebrickable parts list (for v3) If anyone gives either of them a go, good luck, have fun and please share some pics!
