  1. No, bluetooth only works in about a 10m radius - pretty much useless for displays. IR has a 30m radius. plus, quite frankly, I don't want them changing the system yet again. Leave it alone now for 20 years or so! Sure, tweak the components - make the battery box smaller etc, but leave the basic system unchanged.
  2. I've got a phone app for controlling it, but the IR sender on my phone is pretty small, so it's very hit and miss as to whether the signal is received or not. I gave up with it after it suddenly jumped the speed from 1 up to 7 (it seems to 'store' what speed you want it to go until it can send the signal, and I'd been trying to increase it), causing my loco to derail spectacularly at the next bend...
  3. Hopefully. That battery box is a bugger to incorporate into trains sometimes. I find it's the height of it that's the problem.
  4. Absolutely excellent design! Am I right in thinking, however, that the brown tree branches go over the edges by more than the one stud allowed in the contest? I'm on my phone, so can't quite tell. If so, you might want to modify it slightly so that it's eligible for the contest. Great idea though!
  5. Lovely entry! I particularly like the swing. :)
  6. Nice moc! :) I'm guessing you're not entering the competition with it? Still, it's a nice design nevertheless.
  7. Is it just me that was thinking this was an entry for this year's contest, and as such was completely ineligible? Absolutely excellent MOC, but a bit confusing for @xinbei to resurrect the thread in the middle of this year's contest!
  8. @Spitfire2865 That's true, but it's very difficult to fit a Battery Box, Motor and IR Receiver into the locomotive itself without seriously compromising the design. I'd rather TLG kept the design of the locomotive as accurate as possible and use the tender for driving the train.
  9. There's no point having one of the train axles powered in a steam train, when it's far easier just to put everything into the tender.
  10. Wow, that first one (the blue one) is stunning!
  11. That's what I do, I just build from bricks. You might want to get the Constitution Train Chase while it's still available (won't be for long - it's already discontinued in the UK). That's a good set, and it's a good one to modify too.
  12. Huh? You asked for instructions for building the steam locomotive Emerald Night. LEGO haven't released any other steam locomotives recently, and probably not since the 12v era.
  13. Brickset have links to all available instructions as PDFs. #10194 Emerald Night is here: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=10194-1 Just click on the 'instructions' tab, and download the PDFs.
  14. I'd just like another steam train...
  15. It's a good design! Why not just lose two studs from the decking? I think you'd probably have to lose the flagpoles too, but that wouldn't be difficult.
  16. It's ok, it just got my hopes up for a split second.
  17. Don't do that!!! I saw the pic and for a split second I thought you were showing actual box art.
  18. Thanks! There's a lot of excellent entries though - I think it's going to be a very close contest!
  19. Is this the thread equivalent of Groundhog Day?
  20. It looks good, but surely the tender won't go around corners now, with having 4 axles on the same 'bogie', as it were?
  21. Thanks! I'll be looking at getting some of your custom rods in the new year. Would you do rods that are 13 long, with 3 holes? (Gap of 5 between each hole)
  22. I've just finished this, my MOC of a 4-6-2 steam engine. The shape is loosely based on the Constitution, but how it's put together (especially the lower half) is quite different. It's not my first train MOC (you can see that in the background), but it's the first substantial one I've done. The front bogie is attached in a similar fashion to the Constitution, but the extra axle at the rear required a different arrangement for the main wheels. It goes around curves pretty well, although it's a bit tight through switches. The Tender is an almost exact copy of the one I built for my Constitution. It fits all the PF gubbins in it, and I like the design, so saw no reason to change it. :) I'm thinking of getting the 2x4 plates on the side of the cab etched with 'GNLR' at some point too (for Great Northern Lego Railway). Or I might get that etched onto the 1x6 plates on the tender instead, and put a number on the cab... Full size photos are on my Flickr. Any and all feedback is welcome! :)
  23. Oh I've no real intention of doing it, I just looked to see if it was possible. I'd rather spend my money on Lego! :)
  24. ^ What about driving? How many LEGO stores could you get to in one day? :)
  25. I have to say though, I'm really struggling to fit Cardiff into day 2. I don't think you could. Ideally you'd start at Cardiff and finish at Brighton, but neither are ideal, as Cardiff opens at 9:30, and Brighton shuts at 8pm. You could do a round-trip to brighton, as the extra hour it'd take would be offset by the 10pm closing time of Shepherd's Bush, but it's a bit convoluted. Bluewater is a bugger, because it's 20mins walk from the nearest station!
