ME Models Rail Update - March 2016
Paperballpark replied to Eric J. Olson's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Having played around with the track I have received, I thought I'd write a little review and post it on the forums of a couple of the LUGs here in the UK, so that others could see what it's like. That was picked up by Huw at Brickset, who kindly said he'd repost it on Brickset. You can read it here. -
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Class B 0-4-0
Paperballpark replied to ShrikeArghast's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Nicely done! The only thing I'd say is that you have the cab roof overhanging the back of the train by quite a way, when in reality it doesn't overhang at all. -
90cm x 90cm is tiny for Lego Trains. I'd almost say it's really not worth bothering. In fact, sod it: it's really not worth bothering.

I agree, the running mechanism of the Constitution is very well done, in terms of it just working, without any mods needing to be done to stop it seizing or derailing or anything like that. That said, I'd appreciate a different style/body on top of it.

42056 - Porsche Speculation
Paperballpark replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Right, I've read the last 5 or so pages of comments since it was unveiled, and I just thought I'd say this, as someone who isn't really into Technic, and has only got one small (modern, studless) Technic set, which I got given for free about a year and a half ago. I really like the BWE when that was shown off earlier in the year, and I may well get that, but the preliminary Porsche images didn't really do much for me. Plus, I'm not really a Porsche fan. However, as soon as I saw the final images of the orange version, I loved it. I love how big it is and how faithful it looks. Oh and orange is my favourite colour, so there's that too. I'll definitely be getting it. Quite honestly, I read people moaning on here about the lack of 'hand of god' steering, or the lack of 'proper' suspension, or it 'only' having a four speed gearbox, or not having a new piece for the flappy paddle gearbox, and it all goes over my head. I don't care about any of that. I'm not a Technic geek, I just love how it looks and all the features it does have. I think this is Lego Technic's equivalent of the Modular buildings. It will get people who wouldn't normally be interested in Technic, interested in it. It'll draw them into the range. And it'll be a stunning display model. I'm looking at moving house soon, and this model will take pride of place in my living room. It might even displace my Tower Bridge, which has been my main display model for the last 2 and a half years. -
ME Models Rail Update - March 2016
Paperballpark replied to Eric J. Olson's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I received part of my order over the weekend - the R56 and R72 curves I ordered. Still waiting for the R88 and R104, but I was told that they were being sent separately, so I didn't have to wait longer than necessary. Those should hopefully arrive within the next couple of weeks. I've only clipped part of it together (house is currently a total mess as it's being completely redecorated), but I'm pretty impressed! I'm looking forward to the second batch arriving -
Yeah, it's just a whiney post. What's he doing still running a website called 'brickfanatics' if he's not yet spent a penny on Lego this year? I mean really? Not even from Bricklink? Even those who grumble about what Lego releases have probably bought something this year.

Winter Village Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Holy crap that's amazing for a 10-year old! I was thinking that was really good for a 10-year old, then I saw that he'd built PF into it as well! I don't care that it only went very slow, the fact is that it worked! Amazing.

Yeah I looked through all the Dark Orange pieces, but there was nothing that worked. Thank goodness there was cheese slopes!

Don't worry, I won't!

Thanks! No, that particular 'play feature' is not present (and never should have been IMHO). The interior is a big technic frame - it's purely a display model.

This is my large-scale model of Rey's Speeder. It's currently a work-in-progress, built to the scale of the Constraction figure, and is about 64 studs long. I decided to build it because I realised that a speeder at minifig scale is never going to look right - because the minifigs aren't scaled right! If you make it to scale with the minifig height, then the width and head size of the minifig will look too big. Equally, if you scale it to the size of the head, then the minifig will look too short. Plus, of course, the minifig can't 'ride' it. So I decided to do a large-scale version instead. I've been working on it for about three months now. I wasn't originally going to show this until it was finished, as I wanted people's first sight of it to be the finished model, but I thought I'd show it off now because it won't actually be finished until late summer. I still need to replace all the white with Dark Orange parts, and also use some Dark Orange to cover the parts that are still exposed. I also need to do a net for the side of it, and make the foot-stands for Rey's feet to rest on. I haven't done a proper piece count yet, but it's easily in excess of 2000 pieces. The main thing is pretty solid, and also pretty heavy! So here's where I'm up to:

Power Functions in a small steam engine?
Paperballpark replied to Bricksmith's topic in LEGO Train Tech
This is a small steam engine I've built, with full PF included in it. -
Yes it's long, but tbh, anyone could go into LDD, design a truck and then copy & paste it multiple times. Heck, I could make one a mile long if I wanted. My point is that it's not really that impressive an achievement in LDD. It'd be much more impressive if you had photos of a REAL long train.

ME Models Rail Update - March 2016
Paperballpark replied to Eric J. Olson's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Well I got an email from Mike on 11th March saying my order should ship 'next week' (i.e. last week). Great! Except it isn't showing as having been shipped yet... EDIT: Just got a response to my email. Apparently it'll be shipped this week, as they had a delay on the last of their parts orders. -
How about using it as a base for a modular 'earthquake-proof buildings testing rig'? :) Shake them around on it and see whether they fall apart!

My Horizon Express is 375 studs long, and two train motors pull it easily.

60052 Cargo Train vs. 60098 Heavy-Haul Train?

60052 Cargo Train vs. 60098 Heavy-Haul Train?
Paperballpark replied to wgemini's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Yes I'd say 60052 as well. I have both, and much prefer that one. I modified mine to be the same length as the Maersk train, as I think it looks better like that. -
I'm pretty damn certain that you can't put 16 motors on one IR receiver. Well, obviously you can, but just don't expect them to actually work. I can't remember where I read it, but as dr_spock said above, you'll be tripping fuses, or trying to pull too much power through it, or something like that (I'm no electrician).

I thought I'd add to this topic with my newly-extended Horizon Express, which consists of two cabs and ten carriages. It's ten feet long (over 3 metres), and the two PF motors in the front cab pull it easily. No problem at all. Larger photos are available on my Flickr account.

Sorry to revive an old topic, but was there ever a review done for this on Eurobricks? I can't find one, despite an extensive search, so if there is, please could someone provide a link to is? Thanks!
