  1. "You became a craftsman?" Boomingham claps him on the back. "Good for you, chappo! The job of a hero isn't for everyone, that's certain. Hel, if I knew how to do anything other than command men and swing a sword, I'd probably take it up right around now. My bones are becoming tired. So, you're just in the Hall for some free drinks, or do you work for heroes? It'd be good to keep some folks in the fold who did a bit more support work. Wouldn't hurt to hire a second bar tender, for example."
  2. "Yeah, think you may have mentioned that to me some time. Or someone else. But the Hel knows, we've got demons left and right far as I can tell. The frog we saved was a Ziegfried too." Boomingham glances down at his bag of holding, suddenly remembering something. He yanks out the Medal of Optimism. "Is there a place we have for remembrances of heroes who went down in action? Maybe I should ask the Sand Queen. I promised her I'd have a drink with her once we got back."

  5. "A lot of the quests I go on barely seem suited to heroes. I'm losing faith that the Veterans vet the quests at all," chuckles Boomingham. "Heroes. And don't worry, I've survived worse than drink."
  6. "I've heard that rhetoric before," says Samuel. "And it has always failed to impress me. Yes, there are shadows, but only because the light is not everywhere yet." The heroes turn down a particularly tight corridor. Yu Shu growls at Samuel. "You are a fool. I should have never accepted you into my order." She glances around for a means of escape. "This is a particularly narrow hallway. I guess now is as good a time as any. Samuel! Avery!" Samuel turns to the soldier he is walking behind, the one carrying Yu Shu's weapon. "I am very sorry. I hope you find a just reward in Ennoc's land." And he slams his staff into the man's face. Blood gushes forward as Samuel deftly tosses Yu Shu's weapon to her. Meanwhile, Avery flicks a dagger out of seemingly nowhere and stabs it into the throat of the guard next to her. As he falls she deftly yanks her cloak from his belongings and tosses it on her back. "Marcellus, block the passageway! Avery on the other side." She turns to the heroes. "None of them can leave this passageway." 7. "My master Raguel was a good warrior of the Light, and he was struck down by darkness. When I approached Yu Shu, she wouldn't allow me go extinguish that same darkness. Tra-Serral. Oko saw my frustration, and offered me a better path. When the Order Imperial conquers the world, demons like her will not longer be allowed to exist."
  8. "Don't call me a ruler. There are others who will lead. I am a conquerer." The heroes are marched through a series of passageways, and they begin to get a feel for the fortress. The architecture is build directly into the cave - sometimes the walls simply end and the cave walls take over. There are a series of places where multiple rooms with high ceilings, and from second and third floor windows the heroes can tell they are being watched by archers and warriors. Sometimes there are small slits in the roof to allow in moonlight, and the occasional torch or candle is scattered throughout. The entire place is a labyrinth, and a dangerous one. Eventually the heroes come to a sort of interior courtyard, the ceiling so high that it is lost in darkness - only a small slit to allow in the moonlight is visible above. Their procession comes to a halt. "We'll be dealing with you now," announces Bella with a sly smile. Out of the opposite corridor marches a Warrior Priest that Nerwen recognizes: Samuel the Doubly Blessed, followed by a number of guards. "Hello everyone. Lady Nerwen. Commander Yu Shu," says Samuel with a confident smile. A deep rolling growl arises from Yu Shu. "I thought I'd leave you in familiar hands. Everyone, this is Samuel the Doubly Blessed. Once he was a Warrior Priest under Yu Shu until he saw the darkness that grew within her and the weakness he bred. He has since come to serve the true Light." The guards swarm around the heroes, stripping them of their items, their back-up weapons, and armors. "You bastard!" Yu Shu spits at Samuel finally, unable to control herself. "You coward!" "I am a little disappointed, Samuel. You told me Yu Shu would be difficult to topple, yet here she is, presenting herself to me on a silver platter. And I thought I'd have to go all the way to Eubric to take care of her." Bella shakes her head. "The greenskins, kobold and undead may be exterminated." "I wanted a crack at this greenskin," complains Bernard, jerking his hand towards Mitchell. "You'll be DEAD before you even RAISE YOUR sword!!" smacks out Mitchell. "Leave that creature alive for Bernard. Yu Shu may be taken to a private holding cell. Bernard and I will deal with her shortly. The other five should be put in a cell. We will allow them the choice to join our empire of Light, or not. My brother is a better speaker than me. They should wait to speak with him." She turns to the heroes and their companions. "This has been brief and disappointingly boring." She, Bernard, Oko, Abel and their soldiers stride off the way they came. Samuel and his guards surround the heroes. "If you'd follow me."
  9. I don't think many people want to do that. Those focused on mechanics would never throw away a build. Those interested in RP are likely to have a hero death. That's why I only offered hero death in the final Wren quest. That'd be a meaningful sacrifice. Look at Erdy. It makes sense that she died at the hands of the Regret. We had Boomingham and Masson fight behind the scenes so as not to take up time, but that was another opportunity for hero death if Masson won (not that he would have killed Boomingham, but I told Endgame that was in his hands). Basically, the only people who will opt for perma-death are going to be the RP styled players, and the only way they might opt for perma-death would be in an RP oriented situation. But, that's just my opinion.
  10. I want the PCs dead too but Sandy won't let me.
  11. Sometimes my characters surprise even me. I've gotten much more into revising quests for months before posting them so that every NPC is doing what I think they'd do. I used to just write the plot and then hold the NPCs to it and shout at them "do this". But now I try to make it make sense for each NPC... which makes them more complicated, perhaps, but also better in my opinion. And sometimes I find out that I'm being the complicated one, and the NPCs would take a way easier and logical path.
  12. "I told you, we saved a frog together," Boomingham beams. "A little girl wanted us to save a frog so we did. Least, I think it was with this chap. Sometimes if I get enough drink into me they all start to look a little similar. High cheekbones, angry little cunning eyes... course, that will never be a problem for me with you-" Boomingham stops himself, slams his thigh and laughs- "Hels, maybe it will be now that all your people are back."
  13. "We should have NEVER teamed up with these WEAK-WILLED PANSIES!" gulps Blueblast. He turns to Bernard, who walks beside him. "You'll be DEAD by the TIME I AM." Bernard head butts the prisoner, and then chortles in his deep armor as Blueblast covers the blood that seeps down his forehead. "I'd enjoy a good fight. The villagers around here just roll over and die when I come to town. I'll see if Bella won't release you into the ring with me." He looks Blueblast over. "Can't imagine you've got much technique, though. You look like a good old fashion hack and slash. I should be able to finish you within a minute. What the Hel are you, anyway?" "SCREW OFF!"
  14. Expect that every NPC has an agenda, and that some of them line up with the party and some of them don't.
  15. "There's always an offer!" chimes in the friendly looking knight in the back of their attackers. "The Order Imperial is looking to build a nation, not to kill all the others. We're uniters, not conquerers." "Sir Abel. I would ask you not to speak out of turn. Remember what got you transferred to under my leadership." She smiles sweetly at Yu Shu. "He was poisoned by the Freeport as well. He grew too tolerant of the darkness. Perhaps this sounds familiar. When it was decided he would be reassigned to reaffirm his conviction, I was more than happy to take him on." "Ugly and deformed," Oko chuckles. "I don't know about that. And I have the utmost loyalty to family. If you saw your brother or sister drowning, wouldn't you do your best to save them? In Terra Chima anyone may challenge the chief of a tribe. If the chief is defeated, there is no shame in the tribe for him. He was simply not serving where he could best serve. My sister will see that this is the same." "Justice." The soldiers muscle forward and knock Pretzel around a little as they strip him of weapons and armor. Deborah and Gocklo turn over their weapons willingly... but Mitchell has to be shouted down, spitting and blubbering the whole time until finally Deborah strides forward and punches him in the cheek. He finally comes to his senses and surrenders his sword. The heroes are led down the mountain and through the valley towards the mountain opposite. Its tall peaks are darkness, defined only by where the stars stop shining. Bella arrives at two enormous gates that swing open for her - apparently there are others watching some small slits in the fortress. The procession marches inside, and the gates slam shut. It is near dead dark inside, with a single moonbeam shooting through a small window to the side of the gate. Ahead of the heroes is a complete fortress - walls, a number of alley ways, some towers armed by dark shadows. It's clear that the Paladins built the fortress so that even if the front gate fell, it would be a gruesome and slow battle for any invading force. "Beautiful, isn't it? Once the Order Imperial has united all the nations into the Nation of Light we will not need fortresses such as these any more. There will be no war. But until then..." Bella smiles cruelly. "I am happy to be the commander of one."
  16. Boomingham grins goofily at Thalion. "How's it going, chap? Save any more frogs since we last met?"
  17. I wish you had given Oko more of your items, Pala.
  18. And thank you. I'm glad you like reading Bobby, I can't tell if he's a pain in the megablocks or not. I also realized that it must be very hard sometimes for people from other countries to pick up on English slang, even if they know the language well, so hopefully that's not super annoying for people from other countries. And like I said, I had an absolute blast! I'm not debating that.
  19. Yeah, but that's exactly what I'm saying. That would have been the time to have it come to light if you already knew it was going to come to light. There was no choice for the heroes at the end of that quest if their actions didn't matter. After 43 I thought the questees HAD made a choice - the love affair would be secret, and the boys would go to Doomsayer's Island! Instead of the love affair would be public, which seemed like the other option. But now there was no option and no Doomsayer's Island, just treading water for 90 odd quests. But maybe we can just chalk it up to different philosophies. I still enjoy your quests and stories, so probably in the end that's all that matters.
  20. Yeah, I'm not disputing that Laureline can grow to a bigger character, but talk is cheap . I wish we had seen her take action a little bit more. 20 quests from now it might be nice to know that she was a minstrel once, but what people will remember is if she scolded her son and sent him away from the city, or told him to run away from Nuitan, or if she just shrugged her shoulders and said what the hell let him do what he wants and she wouldn't be mentioning it to the father. Right now she is just doing the same thing her husband would do - there's ways to have her still be against the friendship without having her retread what we've known about the Hinckwells since the first day of the game. But yeah, fair points about the loot. I don't think the cape is great, but it could be in a build, and the axe is a new weapon. And like I said, it's probably more a reflection of us failing quite a few battles. And I'm not saying the story shouldn't move forward! It just feels like it's a little silly to offer us a moral choice if the affair is going to come to light anyway. I assume Noctus will have to reveal it to the Hinckwells in some way by his reaction, but that is assuming, so who knows! Maybe he'll try to exploit it! I agree that you should absolutely remain in charge of your storyline! It's just sometimes feels a little unfair to offer us a choice and then immediately ignore it. I felt like we had affair comes to light/affair doesn't come to light, and then a page later we were told that regardless of what we told the Hinckwells the answer was "affair comes to light" so what the heck were we doing debating it? But again that's assuming on my part. And I'm not unhappy that the storyline is moving forward - but again, if the "affair comes to light" was the only outcome of that storyline, then the choice at the end of 43 was equally pointless, and we could have just skipped to it there. And I do like your stories. And I'm not demanding that any player controls the story! I know you let the characters evolve the story. We've all seen it and appreciated it. I'm just saying offering non-choices often just slows things down, that's all!! Other than that yes you can absolutely hold all the puzzle pieces, because you're doing a good job of it!
  21. Oko strides forward and scoops up Grimwald's weapon. "No speeches, Grimwald. You hardly know what's happening. I've seen you fight, Monk. And laying down your weapons would be in your best interest. I can assure your safety. And my sister will survive just fine if she complies." "Don't make any promises for me, Oko."
  22. "Please, you're a warrior. Don't pretend otherwise." He turns to the others. "Drop your weapons. Now."
  23. Hey Sandy! So, Quest 124! It was absolutely a ton of fun, and I think it'd be redundant to talk about how much you've grown as a QM over the years (hell, we've all practiced enough that hopefully we've all grown). Here are some of the things I LOVED and some of the things I thought could use improving: -Laureline Hinckwell - I'm not sure we learned a ton more about her from this quest, to be perfectly frank. You have a ton of characters, and of course they can't all be incredibly important, but at the same time none should feel unimportant. Even within this quest, what would have been different if Heinreich had asked us to track down a song his wife had once sang? Hopefully in the future we will see why it's important that Laureline is a player in this meandering story of Eubric. I know you are more than capable of creating fully realized bit characters (you have probably dozens of them at this point) but I still felt like she just didn't come into full, and this was advertised as her quest. -The arbomancer seemed like a nice fellow, and I liked that the rich citizens of Eubric pay him to keep the flowers alive in winter . That's a superb little detail. The Dark Dwarves were fun and great figures. Obviously that battle was too tough - even with a Minstrel and a few levels higher it was still a challenge. We made some mistakes too, however, and it's pointless to dwell on. I really admire that you let us give it a second go, that's the sign of a generous QM playing with their players, not against them. -I liked the puzzle of finding the right girl - the answer was so simple that you had to spell it out for us, but that didn't make it less fun! The pixie fight also skewed a little difficult to me, but we also suffered bad rolls. -I couldn't tell if there was a better way to get to the front of the Carly Swift group. That fight was certainly fair enough, with some fun enemies and good specials. I guess we should have immediately made the connection with the Shadeaux - I really like that they weren't trying to hurt the Hinckwells this time around, though. -I'm sorry that the Queen of the Dancefloor is dead. I feel like there are going to be a lot of disappointed folks. I guess that's the danger of living in Eubric. -Bellanotte - On the other hand, I thought Bellanotte came across fantastically in this quest, for all the reasons I thought Laureline didn't work out great. She is a character who's role could not have been filled by any of her family members, which makes her an integral character. Nuitan probably would have never let slip that he received the song (and would have never given it to Carly in the first place). Umbra would probably be as angry as Noctus was about the cross-relationship, and besides, I don't think Nuitan would confide in her. Count Noctus likewise seems like he and his son have a closed relationship, and obviously he doesn't attend Carly Swift concerts. Bellanotte was the only character who fit here, and that defines her and makes her seem like a part of the story. I'd say this quest was really her story, much like her role in "Protect My Brother" simply couldn't be filled by anyone else. In the larger scheme of things too we can tell how she's important. She's loyal to the Shadeaux in the way that Umbra and Noctus are, but she's loyal to her brother too and therefore accepting of him. This is different than all the other Shadeaux, and this makes her an important player in the overall meandering story of Eubric. But maybe Bobby just liked her more. -Like I said, the final fight was nice! Thanks for that. Very generous. -The loot was alright... but it will take a few years for any of us to get to Minstrel, and beyond that, there wasn't a ton of great loot. I don't think every quest ever has to drop powerful things, but I don't know if anyone in the party picked up a new artifact OR weapon, and generally there should be at least one. Not one for each player, but at least one. Maybe there was one. The loot just felt a little light, but on the other hand we did lose a decent number of our battles, so perhaps we deserve that. -The Epilogue - I actually didn't love it. It's a twist, sure... but it means that the choice in the end was absolutely meaningless, and since this was a Shadeaux and Hinckwell quest that makes the whole thing feel meaningless. I'm glad to see this story move forward, but I feel like we've hit this beat many times over the years of this game. The boys almost got tattled on nearly 100 quests ago. Bellanotte fixed that thanks to a player choice, but then it was taken away due to NPCs in 66. Then we retread it here again. So I'm glad it's moving forward, but feel like it was ALWAYS going to move in this direction and we just sort of delayed it for a long long time. BUT if that epilogue wasn't going to happen if we didn't tell Laureline, then that's all moot. I know all that looks like harping. I had a honestly great time! The fun of the quest was honestly 9/10, and I suppose with a game that's a pretty fantastic score. But those are the points I think that would have pushed it to 10/10, especially as a "reader" as opposed to a "player". Thank you so so much for having me, and I can't wait until I get to quest under you again.
  24. Bobby hums Lovebird as he walks down the street, a little spring back in his step. He returns to the Hall! OoC: Thanks, Sandy! I'll post in the QM Lounge soon, but I had a great time!
  25. Boomingham has a few drinks as his friends talk about underground mirrors. He can't help but feel that its a little bit of a mundane conversation, but that's both a blessing and a curse as far as conversation goes and he's thankful for the company, so he sits there jolly enough with a sloppy smile splayed across his face.
