Actually, I've consciously maintained the balance between male and female characters in my quests - sometimes even leaning heavily on females because other QMs don't feature that many female NPCs. Hell, even the hundred people that were captive inside the Academy in Quest#93 consisted of pretty much half and half of both sexes. I've even made a few ventures into the transgendered zone with a couple of my NPCs, but that type of characters are a bit tricky to write convincingly without resorting to too many stereotypes. I know transgendered people in my real life, and it is hard to imagine they would have been allowed to live the way they want to live in a more uncivilized era... It might be because I'm a gay man with many close female friends, but I don't find women that much different from men - not in the same sense I see myself different from a person living on the other side of the world. I personally have no trouble writing Ellaria, but perhaps a woman would be a better judge on how well I've done with her. What I actually worry about is that we sometimes impose too much of modern sense of morality and lawfulness into what is still a developing world heavily influenced by religions and feudal systems. I'm not saying we should aim for historical accuracy, since this isn't a historical setting, but Eubric is a city without laws, so murder, rape, famine and thievery shouldn't be as strange phenomena in our characters' life as they are in our own. The same applies to racism and other type of discrimination - the people of Olegaia are hardly the worldly, cultured and highly-educated people that we players are (well, at least in comparably so ). That's why I don't expect absolutely everyone to just accept Nuitan and Lyren's relationship at face value, for an example, even though I myself am a homosexual person. It just wouldn't feel realistic, somehow, even though in a fantasy setting it would be possible. There is the point that this is not a game about our own history, but about a fantasy world. We can shape it the way we want to, but of course historical and cultural realities affect our way of thinking. That's why if we want to include more female warriors etc., we have to do it consciously - because it goes against our subconsciousness. I am sure nobody here is being sexist or racist on purpose. In fact, playing in a fantasy setting offers us a relatively safe way to explore the themes of sexism and racism without hurting anyone's feelings, which is something I find very intriguing.

Luckily you can count the number of changes from the first page of Heroica Hall, where I've been keeping record of them throughout the history of this game. Arthur has changed class four times, so he is tied with Nur and Namyrra, whereas Benji has changed it a total of six times.

Holy crap, this made me laugh very hard for very childish reasons! It's totally alright. As I said, every QM can make the same mistake. We are lucky to have such a great community here to keep each other in check and make sure the game is as fair as possible to everyone. :thumb:

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Sandy replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
When I think about it, I don't think anyone would even want to play a class that can only heal and not cause damage (to non-undead enemies), so I'll just keep the class restricted to the NPCs. I just finalized another NPC job class for #125, and boy is it fun! -
That's exactly why you should've consulted with me about this beforehand. It's easy for a QM to get into that "I want to give my players cool stuff" mode without realizing what effects it will have on the game in the long run. I've been on that mode a couple of times myself. I don't mind that you offer Anwyl's services at a lower price, because it's a one-time chance. However, offering permanent effects, changing a weapon's type as well as custom-made weapons is excessive. You should really offer just one of these services alongside normal upgrading and imbuing.

I don't know what places you have frequented, but if a period is considered hostile then that place is certainly in dire need of a good whopping from an English teacher. I've heard what you're saying a dozen times before ever since I started using internet way back when, it's just the fad that changes every time. At one point... it was... "cool"... to put... three dots... everywhere... AnD aT oNe PoInT sOmEoNe tHoUgHt tHiS wAs a NiFtY wAy To WrItE. And who can forget using brightly colored fonts, yay! Whatever the current fad is, writing normal text is the one that actually gets you understood and respected. Emoticons are best used sparingly.

You seem to know how to write just fine, so why don't you please stop using those weird emoticons in place of periods. It is seriously distracting and takes the focus away from what you are trying to say. But really, you can write well, and that is always a plus when playing a game that's pretty much based on writing.

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Sandy replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Then its just a normal CRITICAL HIT, isn't it? I also think the job trait "Devine [sic] Focus" should be called "Two-handed Grip" or "Zweihänder Grip", because that's what it basically is. But yeah, I can be anal about names and terms sometimes. Sounds a bit complex, but perhaps it would add to the appeal of the class. I don't see a problem. Just like a Paladin doesn't have to be Ennoc's worshipper or a Druid one of Sylvania's, a Vindicator wouldn't have to be tied to a single deity or religious group. Rather some group could give the hero access to the class, but the hero can decide which deity to become a champion of at the Training Room. On another topic: What are people's opinions about offering gender-specific classes? Not that I have any concrete plans set in stone, but I have a quest focusing on the Sisters of Danab coming up, and I was toying with the idea of a pure healer class that would only be available to female characters (i.e. "Sister"). I might just keep it for the NPCs, though. -
I don't know why I haven't done this before, but this topic is now pinned to the top of the forum as well.

I know! I'm happy about it too. So is Dragoon, since it has three pages worth of rules, but we shouldn't let ourselves get too bothered about it. I understand, but Arthur can shout "Skyward Strike!" out loud every time he makes a Jump Hit, if that's any consolidation to you.

Heroica RPG - Quest #118: The Tale of the Stolen Spirits
Sandy replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: We can move through each other and the blood, right? Can we move over the bodies? Also, do I need to post Order of Action when there are no enemies in sight? For now you can just move us in the order we post. Also also, how will effects work? Do they last the entire duration of the Grid Battle, or just for each separate battle we face? "Oh Sylvania..." Ellaria gasped as she saw the bodies sprawled all over the staircase. "All these poor people." Ellaria helped Thormanil search the bodies while moving towards A2 to see what laid ahead.- 506 replies

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Sandy replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
I like it. It is similar to Regulator with the dual role, but instead of chaos and order its offense and defense. My only worry is that there seems to be too much going on in the rolls. Especially the negative effects caused by some of the rolls seem to be excessive, making the class more complex than it needs to be. I couldn't hide the first post, but I deleted the text and only left a title. They seem pretty balanced, and what I like the most is that the player can decide for themselves whether to focus on offense or defense, it isn't automated. Champion came to my mind as well, especially with the divine aspect. But Avenger is more accurate, I concur. Vindicator would be a synonym, albeit a rather fancy one. -
Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Sandy replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Thanks for the interesting list, WBD! It really helps to show how the classes divide into different roles, but looking at it we don't really seem to be lacking in any department, there being several options in all of the roles. 1. QMs can easily add debuff battle songs for Minstrels. If there are several Minstrels around in the future, those extra songs would give them nice variety. 2. Umm, like Shaman? 3. Umm, like Warden? 4. Sounds complicated. Can you give me an example of what such a class would be like? Are there similar classes in other RPGs, for example? -

Umm, why? Those classes are all somewhat similar, so why would you need another one? -
As most of you might have noticed from the expert job class discussion topic, the Dragoon has had a makeover! It now has a total of three pages of rules, too.
