OLD Mafia and Mystery Games Index
Sandy replied to MagPiesRUs's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
It's not a first-come-first-served thing, for your luck. The sign-ups will stay open for two weeks (while I'm exploring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida, coincidentally), and there's some questions you need to answer that will affect whether you're in or not. I only want players that I know will be motivated to play this game, and the questions will help ensure that. -
REVIEW Castle 7097 - Trolls' Mountain Fortress
Sandy replied to Svelte's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
The Troll Fortress was 108 € new when I bought it from a local store half a year ago, and the new castle is now 119 € in the same store. The prices just keep climbing up, I tell you... -
People, please pay attention to the date of when this topic was posted: it's almost two years old. Many people don't keep their images on hosting sites that long because of the way they tend to fill up. So that's probably why the pictures aren't showing in this topic either.

Wow, what a great execution to a great idea! I love all the versions, they're kinda cute if you ask me. Show's them medieval woodcutters not to mess with trees!

I think the point of this topic is to think of the fitting parts that would make up the missing characters, not just to list them all. I've built some of the characters myself in the past, but with every passing year new minifig pieces become available, so nowadays I'd make those characters look quite different. I'll think of some examples a little later.

Oh, now I get why so many people spell the word wrong here! I apologize, I didn't know of this, I thought people were just ignorant or something...

First of all, it's spelled FACTION. Fraction is a completely other word, meaning a part of something. Secondly, I agree that the "good vs. evil" thing is a huge cliché in our grown-up minds, but that's how kids conceive the world. Kids learn to see more of the "shades of gray" as they grow up. Having a bunch of neutral factions would be another option, but kids would only end up dividing them into good and evil factions themselves. Besides, you yourself are limiting your own options, nobody else. So you want to make the Lions more evil? Go ahead, don't let their shiny armor and white dresses stop you. The kids might not know it, but there's a lot of evil done at the pretense of being good and perfect and all that. An angel's face may just as well hide a devil's mind.

In my opinion Fabuland is a very much a product of it's own time, and would not do well with the kids of today. Besides, the modern Duplo has come very close to what Fabuland was back then, with a bigger variety of pieces and more flexible figs etc. (I work in a kindergarten nowadays so I've gotten a good look at modern Duplo). If TLG were to produce a new Fabuland-line, it would not be compatible with the old stuff anyway, so it's a bit delusional to expect to get the same feeling you got/get from the old Fabuland. Let's all be reminded that nostalgia often makes old things seem and feel sweeter than what they were in reality. Looking back at old cartoons, which were the best thing ever when I was a child, reveals that they really were quite crappy from a technical point-of-view. Not saying Fabuland is crappy by any means, but again, it certainly belongs to the 70's-80's. PS. I recently found out that some of my old Fabuland LEGO that I thought were lost forever are now in my 3 years old nephew's possession. He doesn't seem interested in them, though, so I might just get them back one day.

OLD Mafia and Mystery Games Index
Sandy replied to MagPiesRUs's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
There are 24 spots, which I believe is the largest Mafia-cast to date (I could be wrong, though). More info in two weeks. -
OLD Mafia and Mystery Games Index
Sandy replied to MagPiesRUs's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
Sign-ups to Hogwarts Mafia will begin in two weeks time, and the game itself will commence at the beginning of July. Be ready when the magic starts happening. -
The Kingdoms sets have appeared on the shelfs of Finnish stores, and now I too am a very happy owner of the Wizard, the Jester and the Prison Tower Rescue. I have to say, even though the minifigs are once again the highlight of this theme for me, there's plenty of interesting new parts included in the sets. The tower of the Dragon Knights, for example, is much more impressive once you get to see into every nook and cranny and view it from every angle, than it is in the pictures.

A lovely station - all it needs now is a platform for the train. I couldn't help but to chuckle at the minifigs that all had the same mustache - must be the latest trend, I reckon.

Well, not necessarily that brand, but there certainly are tons of other type of markers and coloring pens available here. Wouldn't any other brand work? Not that I'd personally want to recolor any of my precious headpieces, I love them all no matter what color they are!

Wizards of Waverly Place Decals
Sandy replied to Daniel Williams's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
The pattern is good and colorful, but they don't fit into official LEGO minifig torsos. That's why one can't use these designs as decals even if one wanted to. I think I've seen some bases for decals in the pinned topics in this forums, so why don't you use one for these as well? -
Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures...
Sandy replied to The Kid's topic in Culture & Multimedia
I actually really liked this episode. I loved the "negotiation" bit since I knew the perfect deal would be botched up eventually by both humane and "homo-reptilian" flaws. As for Rory, I wouldn't write him off so soon if I were you. There's still the ring he failed to give to Amy, so I have a good hunch he'll return from the crack by the end of the season. This is all just pure speculation, though, so don't blame me for spoiling it you if it turns out I was right. -
I read that too, and it's obvious the hassassin descriptions are made up by TLG, not being related to the movie at all (they weren't named in the movie either). The fact remains that this "Gool" is wearing Garsiv armor and has his face as well, so in my eyes he's Garsiv.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, Zeph, it's much appreciated! I wasn't aware I was doing this, but I do see it now. There's just the trouble of minifigs having one or two expressions available to them, so I feel like I have to write out their thoughts because they can't effectively just show them. Your suggestion is a fine one, however sometimes the space in the screen limits how many speech bubbles will fit in it. This could maybe be fixed with duplicate panels of the same shot, but I'd like to avoid that. Patience. This is only the second chapter with this lot of characters, and I'm only building up the new characters' personalities. Brighton Bley is not by any means "evil incarnated", but hey, he's Duke Bley's son - what can you expect? I know, and I'm sorry to tell you there's going to be even more. But there's a reason why the sisters have so many companions, but I won't elaborate on that just now. And death will be gathering it's harvest eventually, just wait for that. Thanks for being a devoted fan, and please, share your opinions in the future as well!

I also saw the movie a little while ago, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. In relation to the LEGO sets, it's obvious the set designers had to go with very little info from the actual movie. I recognized all the sets from the movie, but none of them were very accurate. Well, Dastan wears the brown armor in the battle at the beginning, but I also would've preferred to see the robes he wore for most of the movie on the minifig as well. I think the "Gool" minifig from the Battle of Alamut set is supposed to be Garsiv - there's really no other character that looks like that in the movie. Maybe they changed his name during the production, and forgot to inform TLG about it.
-
I really love it, too. It belongs to Gilderoy Lockhart from the Harry Potter theme's Chamber of Secrets set, and he's one of the very few sand red minifigs ever created (I actually can't think of any other sand red minifigs, now that I think about it).

Congratulations to all the winners, you really deserved it! There were so many great entries that I myself had to refrain from voting simply because I couldn't make up my mind. This was one fun contest with very interesting categories and great prizes. More of this, please!
-
But if the back was closed too, how could kids play with this set? Please don't forget the target age group of these sets...
-
If this is what you think, Rick, then maybe you shouldn't join my Hogwarts Mafia... Of course you can, but it's going to be non-standard as hell, mind you.

That was very confusing to me as well. It was a fun game, and for a good while I thought the sanes would finally win, but unfortunately Shadows played a different strategy this time so I didn't suspect him until I ran out of options. I was investigated by def, and so were Sok and Eskallon, so I knew they were sane, and so was Ricky because of the "big axe incident". So when it turned out that neither Big Cam nor Bob were insane, it had to be Shadows and Flitwick. Of course I had been long since killed off of the game, so my deductions had no effect. It's my turn to host next, which is both exciting and nerve-wrecking considering the pressure the hosts have had on them during the last few Mafia-games. All I can ask is for everyone to please play nice.

This turned out great! I love all the attention to details, every piece of furniture in the interior is excellent. The whole architecture of the building is absolutely beautiful, too, so congrats on making such a fine piece! The only thing I don't like is the fact that the first floor doesn't mesh with the colors of the two upper floors. The purple wall with red and lime and orange details is beautiful, but it also makes the grey and white and blue walls look very drab in contrast and feel like they belong in two different buildings. So the color palette is not cohesive, but as individual floors, each of them is perfect.

Thanks for the comments, again! What can I say? This is quite a feministic comic, and damsels in distress fit very poorly in my image about women. What's with all these lesbian connotations? On the other hand, why not? The actual meaning, definitely.
