  1. What happened to next super car? There were rumors that Porsche was one of many such yet to come!
  2. It was kind of expected especially when last CEO left after a very short tenure. However, getting rid of so many people just because revenue is slightly less does not look very good on TLG.
  3. Not very exciting sets for 2018 so far Anyway, based on this news, Lego is not doing good lately. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/sep/05/lego-to-axe-1400-jobs It would be very interesting to see Lego's sales figures grouped by Themes and Geography. I wonder whether this is at all disclosed (being a private company).
  4. Awesome replica. Is the official model having motorized function to run the whole truck, rather than operating auxiliary functions only?
  5. I visited London Toy Fair today. But was not allowed inside Lego stall as it was appointment only* They also raised walls along all sides of their stalls which prevented from peeking Most other toy stalls were open for all. If you live/work nearby, worth a visit (entry free if you register online prior to visit). * = allegedly only registered retailers can get appointments.
  6. Use wheels from http://www.bigbenbricks.com/ and then it can be run on G scale (45 mm gauge) tracks like Garden Railways
  7. I have now finished the Porsche chassis with transmission. So far looks like it is working as expected. I only applied 3 changes - step 5, step 151 and step 267-269. Wondering how to place the motors on the chassis. Most YouTube videos are showing 2 XL motors at the back. I only have M motors from 9398 set and L motor from 42043 set. Can it be motorized using these motors only? While rotating the engine output shaft by hand, I could feel some good resistance in top gears. So not sure if M or L motor can provide enough torque. Why there is such a big free space at the front - just below steering shaft? Is it a good place to fix motor?
  8. Wow! That's an achievement! Wish Lego had made their instructions this good These steps do require some additional parts. Also, I am not as expert as of you guys Can I assume that only following changes are needed as minimum corrections in order for the gearbox to work as expected? step 5 - Blackbard's mod step 151 - Attika's flipping of change over catch parts step 267 etc. - Paul's gear sequence correction
  9. I have now started building the Porsche. So far at step 107. Applied Blackbard fix on step 5. Is there any way to test the gearbox at this stage to make sure it is working as expected? If not, what is the earliest step were I shall be able to test the gearbox? Don't want to discover at the end it is not working. Looking at this: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=133743&st=250#entry2587702 It lists following fixes 0. Apply Paul Boratko's gear sequence fix as described in Jim'sreview 1. Flip the change-over-catches in paddle-shifter-unit by 180 degrees (as suggested by Attika) 2. Add the simple 90° limiter to the gear selecter axle; use two of the four white silicon bands 3. Remove the 8 tooth gears used to add friction; minimize friction in the selecter axle instead 4. Use only one silicon band for each paddle shifter; wrap it around the neck of the ball joint once 5. Extend both change-over-catches in the gearbox with half a stud (more info here) Now what are the corresponding instruction manual steps??
  10. Might sound sarcastic, but the most expensive Technic set already has so many alterations required in building instruction to make it work reasonably well
  11. Are there any other non-Lego cars (or similar) which had working gearboxes, steering, suspension etc? I am talking of fully (or minimal) assembled toys/hobby cars which resembles similar functions offered by Lego Technic. I know many RC cars come with suspension, steering etc. but not aware of anything else with a proper working gearbox! PS: Mods please remove to appropriate forum if necessary - I posted it here because I thought Technic lovers are more likely to be aware of the alternatives.
  12. Those who have now built the Porsche and applied the fixes discussed here, can you please confirm whether all the modifications can be made using parts from this set alone? I am talking of following fixes 1. Blakbird's fix for step 5 2. Step 267-269 fixes for correct sequence of changes 3. Modification for easier removal of the body from chassis
  13. I wish TLG re-releases 8880 with modern studless beams and with ALL the functions still same as what was offered in 8880. The 42056 Porsche is a disappointment and functionally far simpler than 8880. I have an uncanny feeling that 8880 will remain as best ever Technic set in next 20 years to come!
  14. Is it really that easy to replicate Lego with precision quality (while being much cheaper at the same time)? May be easy for non Technic but possibily more challenging for Technic sets. I am bit surprised that those copycat manufacturers are not offering well designed MOCs as unofficial Lego sets
  15. Can someone please confirm whether "out of stock" is because of TLG is fixing the model/instruction before releasing to public?
  16. I can understand why Apple is secretive because they have competitors like Microsoft, Samsung etc. But Lego is just a toy maker and they don't have any competitor as such (the cheap copies didn't stand out). If they were less secretive then design issues in 42056 would have fixed before mass release. What is the reason for secrecy then?
  17. Thanks Jim for the excellent review (as usual) How easy is to convert this to Right Hand Drive? Is it a symmetrical design? If it is "out of stock for 30 days" because of design fix, then I think it is a good thing - right?
  18. So 42056 still doesn't beat 8880
  19. Can someone please confirm if I listed all functions correctly? 1. Steering (no HOG) 2. Flat engine with pistons 3. suspension 4. 4-speed gearbox with paddle shift (is it like dual clutch gearbox style) 5. Opening bonnet & doors What else?
  20. I have now nearly built the truck (cab + load bay yet to be done). But while checking the pneumatic crane, I found it quite poor! The crane often falls down under its own load (I think I got it assembled correctly as someone else I read that other people complaint about same issue). I wonder whether replacing pneumatic cylinders with Linear Actuators would have been a better option. Otherwise, even the unfinished model with all cogs visible in the chassis looks great.
  21. Can someone please confirm when is the earliest this set will be available in UK to order?
  22. I guess those who hoarded 8258 for making a profit will be upset now :D
  23. Can someone please list all functions in this set? So far I could see the following. Hand of God steering operating front 2 axles Engine with moving pistons - which axles does it connect to? Pneumatics boom operation - which parts move? Is there air tank? Stabilisers Tilting container bed What else?
  24. I'm just hoping that Lego will take this opportunity to release a super car comparable with legendary 8880 . The whole LandRover is too big for an official set but Lego should at least release a robust chassis and leave the rest to our imagination
  25. I think you stil can't beat 8479 Barcode truck keeping in mind it was a set from 1997.
