LOL. I did say I it was better than 90% of Technic sets, and given that they release only 3-4 decent sized sets a year, at most, means it's one of the top 2-3s sets of the past 5 years. I just finished 42082 a few weeks ago, so I am a little spoiled - what an incredible set that was. I'll be buying this set, no doubt make some minor mods, and I'll judge about the air tanks. Personally I never met an air tank I didn't like in a pneumatic set.

While this is a good Technic set, much better than 90% of what they have released in the past few years in terms of value for money, it doesn't seem as great to me as everyone is going on about. The youtube review by Sariel gives a very good look at the strengths and weaknesses. Bottom line for me is that this set would have benefitted from some tanks to make the pneumatic action smoother, and that a lot of the other functions require a lot of tedious turning of knobs. Too bad the only option for motorization these days is Control+, which for me is a "DO NOT BUY" indicator. I would have happily paid $100 more for a motorized power functions version that did most of the work for me.

Amazing. Just when I think I've seen everything that can be done with LEGO. This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Thank you.

THE PIRATE BAY IS GOING TO BE AN OFFICIAL LEGO SET!!!!
gylman replied to Another Brick In The Wall's topic in LEGO Pirates
It's not remotely as exciting to me as the original Ideas set, but it's still a beautiful set. I understand the limitations the LEGO designers had to deal with, and I respect that. If I survive COVID, I'll buy it, but I'm in no rush to get it April 1st. -
I bought the set, because I happened to be in the store, I generally buy them all and because it was double VIP points day, but I have no particular desire to build or display this one. I'd say it's easily the weakest of all of the modular series. I hope they do better next time. I have wondered about this, but maybe they've run out of ideas. If so, perhaps they should wind down the concept.

REVIEW | 70657 Ninjago City Docks
gylman replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I've been playing with LEGO for 30 years. I've gone through my Castle phases (several of them), my Technic phase, my paradisa phase, my Cafe Corner phase, my Adventurers phase, and others. Even my Bionicle phase. But I have to say that in all those years, to the present time, I have never enjoyed any sets as much as Ninjago City and Ninjago docks. They were a joy a build and a joy to display. The combination of the two on display is spectacular. I keep the combined sets on display in my office at work, and they always draw amazement from visitors. I fear that after Ninjago Docks, my expectations for the next great LEGO set have been set so high that they will never be surpassed. Even the Cafe Corner series seems dull by comparison. In my extremely humble opinion, these are the best LEGO sets ever made. -
This looks like a juniorized version of the other Cafe Corner series sets. Agree with the comments above that this doesn't feel like a "Creator Expert" set. More like a regular Town set. Kinda meh. Probably even less appealing than the Town Hall set from a few years back.

Thank you for doing the review. It's very helpful. For the number of pieces, and the cost, this is a disappointing set. It doesn't fit well with the others. I think they have run out of ideas. For the first time, I think I will pass on the Winter Village series. Maybe it's time to put this series to rest and try something new.

Future Simpsons Lego- Rumours, discussion and wishlisting
gylman replied to Legochaek's topic in LEGO Licensed
I could see a Moe's Tavern. That's pretty iconic. -
There's something about the Hogwarts castles that makes them hard to reproduce with LEGO. I don't buy sets for the minifigs, but rather for the quality of the build and architecture. Every previous Hogwarts' set has disappointed in that regard, and this one does too, on a much grander scale. Sorry, but this one is not even remotely on my "want" list. Thanks for the detailed review.

Meh. I liked the fishing theme houses better, but unless the first one sold extremely well, I wonder what kind of a market there would have been for them. Let's hope the next wave has something more exciting.

I went to my local LEGO store to see this set today. It looked better than I thought it would, but it was even bigger than I thought it was. Great set, but too big for my available display area.

Thank you for doing this excellent review. I'm impressed that LEGO has made this effort. They committed to an amusement park theme, and they have delivered, year after year. That said, I feel exactly like others have indicated. I have bought none of the previous sets, and don't plan to buy this one, as they are too big for display. I like big complex sets, and generally buy them. But the difference between this set and the equally expensive Cafe Corner and some of the large Ninjago constructions is that the latter are much denser, and can be reasonably well displayed on a shelf, or packed together without taking up an entire table.

42081 - Volvo Autonomous Loader
gylman replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As an old Technic hand, I need more pics and info to judge this, but so far I don't get it. Don't like the look, for sure. Let's see how much interesting functionality it has. -
[PRESS RELEASE] 21313 LEGO Ideas: Ship in a Bottle
gylman replied to VBBN's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I am somewhat disappointed. Nice job with the bottle and display, but they butchered the ship. :-( It bears no resemblance to the original slender, masted, creation. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/eca1b08b-1b29-46a6-97a1-9b2580e1dce2 Hopefully someone will come up with modified version of the ship so those so inclined can try to reproduce something closer to the original. Will it fit inside this new bottle though? Probably not. I guess that's the source of the whole problem. I look forward to the Ideas sets, and I may still buy this, but it's not on my "must buy" list like the last couple of sets. -
It's beautiful, and maybe it marks a whole new direction with modular buildings? I feel like the Cafe Corner has gone as far as it can in terms of architecture. Sure, we can add more different types of buildings, but they all start to look alike after a while. I will start a new city block with this, the detective office, and the movie theatre, which didn't fit all that great into the Cafe Corner series anyway. Which LEGO designer did it? Two things I don't like: -the minifig heads -the car. Seems useless. Waste of money and parts.

Hard to see where 900 pieces are used in this cute but smallish set. Used to be that 900 pieces meant something of a decent size. I guess there area a lot of 1x1 and similar sized bits. Colour scheme is excellent, though. Oh well, I'll buy one of course, or two, but I had been hoping for something better.

In what way is LEGO off track? I confess I don't necessarily like everything they release, but is there a specific trend that has emerged that can be related to this one particular CEO who has been in power for less than a year, when most products probably take longer than that from conception to release?
-
Well, he didn't do them all. But the ones he didn't do.... well.... let's just say they are not the best in the series, both in terms of overall look, and in terms of cleverness of building techniques. I don't want the series to end. I've seen amazing Cafe Corner style modulars done by AFOLs that would stand proudly next to Jaime's work. Here's hoping they keep it going, and here's hoping that Jamie continues to design big LEGO sets.

Jaime Berard is by far, in my opinion, the best LEGO designer. Everything he touches looks great (COUGH Emerald Night COUGH). Of course I will buy it, in duplicate at least. That said, I think this building doesn't really add much to the overall theme. I think they are running out of ideas (though I've seen pretty original ideas from AFOLs). This might be the swansong of the Cafe Corner series. It would not surprise me if they announce the end of the series after this set.

[REVIEW] 42056 - Porsche 911 GT3 RS
gylman replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
While this particular set holds very little appeal for me (crazy price for yet another race car with an interesting gear box but little else, that will just end up sitting on a shelf), I hope that it heralds a future of "ultimate" Technic constructions of a more interesting nature. In my opinion, for pure functionality in an elegant package, the 1980s' Airtech Claw Rig has yet to be surpassed. An upgraded, motorized version of that iconic Technic set would be my ideal high end technic set. I hope that LEGO designers read these threads and consider what people say. I believe they do. So, here goes: for me any "ultimate" Technic construction would have motors, would have remote control, and would have a variety of fucntionalities that involve visible movement and manipulation. To that end, the LEGO Volvo loader from last year was much more of an "ultimate" Technic set for me. I only wished it worked a bit better (too slow, with erratic movement). And well designed pneumatics are more fun than linear actuators.
