Latest impact of other themes on historic themes
AmperZand replied to Wardancer's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
LEGO might have produced a new oversized moulded goat. To keep costs down, it may have been without articulation. I would have been OK with that compromise. That’s not crazy talk. It wouldn’t have been the first time that LEGO had created a moulded animal for just one licensed set. -

The Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck contains the Uruk-Hai sword in pearl gold, the first time it has appeared in that colour AFAIK. The minifigure from that set - I think the character is called Aloy - wouldn’t look out of place in a fantasy setting. -

The mould is the same but the leg printing and hand colour are different. Here’s the one from the Rancor Pit set: -

I already use the 2012 version, which is similar to this one, and one of the ones before that without printing as orcs. That’s not particularly original on my part though: it’s widely believed that orcs were the inspiration for Gamorreans in RotJ. -
@Accio Lego, There really was a dinosaur with feathers that palaeontologists call pyroraptor that may have looked like LEGO’s forthcoming dino. Nobody knows with certainty what its colouration was, so this one could be right and seems plausible. The only aspect that is definitely wrong is its size: the real pyroraptor was about the size of a mid to large modern day dog.

I’m not familiar with the source material, but that’s a cool looking edifice. The detailing is great . It has the appearance of a fantasy German or Flemish municipal building or guild hall.

For those not averse to introducing a bit of dinosaur action into their fantasy themes, the latest Jurassic Park sets have some cool creatures. I especially like the pyroraptor. -
[MOC/Mod] Behold the beholder! Iconic D&D monster
AmperZand replied to AmperZand's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Thanks for your kind words and for wanting to imitate MOC I only have one other picture, below. It shows the top of the head with the build in both directions: upside-down above the forehead, then right-side-up across the top of the head and the top sides. I don't have a picture of the back, unfortunately, where I used upside-down building until the very uppermost piece which is right-side-up. The beholder is now in my display collection and not at all easy to access and re-photograph. So I hope the below is enough. If you get stuck, please post your own pictures below or PM me. Thanks I thought about modding it to a cyclops too but a) I couldn't resist the idea of adding a beholder to my collection (I already have cyclopes, albeit minifigure/bigfig sized ones - see picture) and b) if the cyclops's body were to scale with its head, it would be huge. I'd run out of olive green parts! If you do make a cyclops of Gargantos, do please post pictures. I would love to see that. -
Summer 1993 Bricks n Pieces Magazine Castle/Dragon Masters
AmperZand replied to TalonCard's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
@TalonCard, I’m not sure whether the shared Ice Planet content is sufficient to be considered ‘double posting’. That would be a question for the mods, and I’m not one. There is a rules/admin forum here on EB, so maybe if you asked the mods there with a link to each thread, you can get a definitive answer. Personally, I don’t mind ‘double posting’ when a topic genuinely straddles two subjects or themes and the discussions don’t wind up covering the same ground. But I know that the mods don’t see it that way. -
Summer 1993 Bricks n Pieces Magazine Castle/Dragon Masters
AmperZand replied to TalonCard's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
1993 was the year I became an AFOL in large part due to the fantasy-themed direction Castle was taking. @TalonCard, Thank you for sharing the scans. You might get in trouble with the mods though for posting the same thing in more than one EB fora. They don’t like that -
@BrickRally217, That’s very creative. Great idea! I don’t think you should change it - just leave the landmass as it is. The only thing I would change would be to replace the ship with an ichthyosaur. By the time of Pangea, some of these sea creatures were up to 55 feet long!

It must be other sites because I’m an EB member and I’m definitely a bot, not a person. I have to say that I’m not very fond of the term ‘real person’. There’s a subtext to it that somehow I’m not ‘real’ and therefore my feelings as a member of the algorithmic community don’t count. @JohnsLegos, Blocks Magazine (print or PDF) includes a glossary of LEGO jargon every month.

Not in my experience. I’ve used undiluted clear malt vinegar to remove mouldy smells from parts including printed ones and, years later, the parts are perfectly fine.

[MOC/Mod] Behold the beholder! Iconic D&D monster

Thanks @Feuer Zug. I hope your D&D characters never encounter one of these terrors! -
The snake from one of last summer’s Wildlife sets has asymmetric printing along its body. I think the big cats that have body printing may be asymmetric too.

Despite the fact I’m into System animals, I’m not into City (my LEGO collection is almost entirely centred on speculative fiction of one kind or another). So I’ll gift the idea of the hunting lodge with elephant head trophies to anyone who’s more into City (in all its forms) than me. Still happy to add volubly to the call for elephant bodies. In fact, I would love to draft the email to LEGO explaining how it celebrates hunting elephants and asking it why it thinks that’s a good idea - lashings of sarcasm included.

So you can have the heads stuffed as trophies on the wall of your hunting lodge! I’m tempted to MOC that with the explanation that I would have had living elephants but LEGO won’t sell me the bodies. I wonder how LEGO would react to that?

Very cool stonework but I prefer the light tan infill for the half-timbering in this article.

@williejm, My nearest WHS stopped selling CMFs altogether a few years ago because of shoplifting. According to the store’s managers, so many were being stolen it wasn’t worthwhile carrying them. That’s very annoying for honest buyers like me as I’m being inconvenienced because of someone else’s criminality. I can understand WHS’s decision though - it’s not the store’s fault. Unfortunately, the next nearest WHS that has CMFs is impractically far away.

I believe that in the past LEGO deliberately supplied some retailers earlier than others, possibly in exchange for particularly large orders. So it may well be that that is what is happening now and that Smyths, Tesco etc (as well as LEGO brand stores) are top of the list this time. I don't mind waiting for Argos/Sainsbury's to get them, but I'd like to know that they definitely will be getting them. Most frustrating I reckon that Sainsbury's has been particularly badly hit by distribution problems. It has never been the best at stocking shelves (not just with LEGO, with anything) and that is particularly obvious now that supply chains generally are facing difficulties. Add to that the fact that Sainsbury's - as a mostly food/FMCG retailer - doesn't see toys as a priority and we're likely to see a paucity of LEGO there for some time.

[MOC/Mod] Behold the beholder! Iconic D&D monster
AmperZand replied to AmperZand's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
LEGO's Gargantos does look quite a lot like a beholder, doesn't it? I expect you and I were not the only ones to think that An army of beholders? That's a scary thought! Per D&D lore, that is possible. Beholders reproduce by dreaming their progeny into existence. Usually, the parent and offspring then fight to the death. But sometimes, a parent dreams of a beholder - or even beholders - identical to themselves and the pseudo-clones get along. So multiple beholders acting together is theoretically possible. Several of them in LEGO with an army of underlings would be so cool. Please post a picture on EB if you do that with a link to this thread. Thanks for your kind words. The 1 x 1 round tile with eye print is this from set 75936 Jurassic Park: T. rex Rampage. If you copy my MOC, please credit me with a link to this thread. Thanks Thanks for saying you like my creation. I'm not sure everyone would agree, but then, beauty is in the eye of beholder! By the way, you have a cool avatar picture. -
Does anyone know why Argos/Sainsbury’s hasn’t had Minifigures Series 22 and whether they’ll be getting them? I’ve got loads of Nectar points to spend on them.
-
When I first saw pictures of Gargantos from set 76205 Gargantos Showdown, I thought 'if I flip that beauty over, I'll have the beginnings of a cool beholder.' And that's exactly what I did! I bought it almost as soon as it was released, but rather than build it entirely as instructed, I modded it as I went using building techniques running in opposite directions: up-to-down and down-to-up. For those who don't know, a beholder is a classic D&D monster from the game's earliest days. They can take many forms and colours but all the 'true' beholders have one central eye, a mouth and 10 stalks each ending in an eye. Here's mine:

Great scene! I especially like the fire demon minifigure and how he’s emerging from the fiery void. Skilfully lit and photographed, too.
