When I first saw pictures of Gargantos from set 76205 Gargantos Showdown, I thought 'if I flip that beauty over, I'll have the beginnings of a cool beholder.' And that's exactly what I did! I bought it almost as soon as it was released, but rather than build it entirely as instructed, I modded it as I went using building techniques running in opposite directions: up-to-down and down-to-up. For those who don't know, a beholder is a classic D&D monster from the game's earliest days. They can take many forms and colours but all the 'true' beholders have one central eye, a mouth and 10 stalks each ending in an eye. Here's mine:

Great scene! I especially like the fire demon minifigure and how he’s emerging from the fiery void. Skilfully lit and photographed, too.

It’s entirely possible legally for the base IP to belong to one party such as Disney and the IP of supplemental creative works to belong to another party, e.g. LEGO. Exactly who owns what IP will be agreed as part of any licence - and that’s normally confidential. We do occasionally get a hint of where the IP divide is. It is sometimes the case that LEGO will design and produce a part for a particular franchise but later use that part (or the same mould) for its own in-house franchises. The lightsaber handle piece is an example of that. It first appeared in LEGO Star Wars sets but has subsequently been in many LEGO owned themes, suggesting that LEGO owns the IP. On the other hand, a part like Darth Vader’s helmet or a design like Spider-Man’s costume are likely IP belonging in their entirety to Disney.

I’m not a purist. My rule is that if something doesn’t exist in LEGO (or is not identical in LEGO), I’ll go elsewhere such as third parties like BrickWarriors, BrickForge, Brick Arms etc. I even reviewed BrickWarriors’ lute and katar here at EB. LEGO doesn’t do entirely transparent minifigures because a polycarbonate-to-polycarbonate joint has too much friction causing the parts to break. So I use Chinese brands for transparent figures. I’m not worried about them cracking as I only pose them carefully once and then display them that way. They’re not subject to the wear that a kid playing with them would cause. I have a very cool Assassin’s Creed glider by Megablocks that I got heavily discounted, modded and added a LEGO ninja minifigure to. LEGO has done gliders, but not one like Mega’s. I use some plates I got at Poundland and Wilko’s in sizes that LEGO doesn’t do.

[MOC] Visit the Queen by moonlight
AmperZand replied to the Inventor's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
A great scene! It has lots of character and the minifigures exude their various personalities. Very cleverly lit and skillfully photographed. Thanks for sharing Without clicking through to Flickr, I spot seven different animals: humans, dwarves, a cat, a mouse, a horse (in the second pic), and a spider and bat of unusual size. -
REVIEW: 80108 Lunar New Year Traditions
AmperZand replied to Pchan1983's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Thanks for the review. Understanding the symbolism of the various sub-builds is both informative and educational. The multicoloured brush is called a ‘feather duster’ even if it doesn’t have feathers, and the gold bar is an ‘ingot’. The connector used to attach each scene to the central column seems to be an axle, not a pin. -
Displaying Larger Sets in a Small Space?
AmperZand replied to shadefoundry's topic in General LEGO Discussion
You may be able to suspend sets from the ceiling using fishing wire. You have to make sure the attachments are secure and can take the weight of course, but it can often be done. I have suspended smaller sets from rafters. There’s footage on YouTube of AFOLs showing their LEGO rooms in which large sets have been hung from the ceiling. It’s feasible. -

REVIEW: 71032 LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 22
AmperZand replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
@WhiteFang, Thank you so much for another great review and set of pictures. Like I always say: A CMF series ain’t a CMF series until Fangy has reviewed it! One minor detail: the troubadour has a ‘plume’ (feather) in his hat, not a ‘plum’ (fruit). A question if I may: What is the order of the packets in each column, front to back of the display box? -

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 22. Rumors and discussion
AmperZand replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
@Robert8, Thank you for the link! Very cool There are lots of spare parts such as an extra sword for the moon warrior, additional coin and two plumes for the troubadour (bard), cheese slope for the chilli costume girl, mushroom head and staff for the forest elf (acorn boy), medal for the paralympian, carrot stem for the groom (foal girl), binoculars for the ornithologist, ice skate and trans clear jump/flight piece for the ice skater, blaster round 1x1 trans piece for the snailien, drill bit for the yellow robot and eye for the small, red robot. There are some bags-within-bags. The foal, for example, is loose in its packet, but the groom minifigure comes in her own trans clear bag. The packets seem to be grouped together in the display box such that, for example, the snow guardians and troubadours are all clustered on the front right. Funny that in the video, the reviewer got the assembly of the ice skater wrong and only gave him one skate -

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 22. Rumors and discussion
AmperZand replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I don’t know if this is widely known but the night protector (moon warrior) has a dual printed head with an open smile on one side and a closed-mouth smirk with frown on the other. The snow guardian (snow warrior) also has a dual printed head with a frown on one side and a more neutral expression on the other. The troubadour (bard) has upper arm printing. -

Marvel Superheroes 2021 - Rumors & Discussion
AmperZand replied to Captain Nemo's topic in LEGO Licensed
That’s my understanding. Apparently, the ball joints at the hip loosens too much with play, eventually leading to the mech flopping over and falling. For AFOLs who are likely to pose it a few times that wouldn’t be a problem, but for kids playing with it, that’s an issue. What’s surprising is that LEGO didn’t realise sooner. Was it still testing after going into production? I hope the Wolverine one gets re-issued with the hip joint used in the previous Marvel mechs. -
Hello @williejm! I reckon you’re right: they’re all the same. Specifically, I think they’re what BrickLink calls dark orange. In fairness to @notpennysboat, it can sometimes be hard to tell with LEGO’s renders what colours actually are due to the simulated lighting/shadows.

If you turn the gargantos monster from the Doctor Strange set 76205 upside down, you get what looks very much like a D&D beholder. Just add some eyes at the end of the tentacles and you’re done! Done - see here. -
How do you ship large Lego flattened boxes?
AmperZand replied to The Neighborhood Merchant's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Should you decide to send anything flat, sandwich it between two sheets of 10mm thick foam board before putting it in an outer cardboard box. Foam board is light and difficult to bend, but easy to cut to size. It’s expensive if you buy it from art supply stores as single sheets, but can be bought cheaply online in multipacks. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 22. Rumors and discussion
AmperZand replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
While I love fantasy as a genre - it’s my favourite - its tendency for nonsensical arms, armour and combat ruins my suspension of disbelief. The otherwise heavily armoured warrior with no head protection is a classic example of that. I get that film studios insist on it because they’re paying loads for particular actors and want their faces to be visible on screen but in games and toys, it’s unjustified. So in answer to @The Brick Rat, neither will look good because her head will be exposed either way. Thankfully, this being LEGO, I’ll be able to swap the Moon Warrior’s hair out for a suitable helmet. -
Sorry for the further OTness, but thanks for the kind words. The head is this part.

The mermaid’s? It’s BrickForge. Apologies if I gave the impression it was purist. It isn’t. Not the first time I’ve used LEGO’s cutesy parts to MOC something more sinister. Getting far OT but my carnivorous plant minifigures for examples.

@Vorkosigan, Those are cool! I did something similar by combining the Vidiyo Metal Dragon’s upper body with the CMF Dragon Suit Guy’s legs and the Devil Suit Boy’s tail. You can see the result here. (EB’s mods frown on posting the same picture in multiple active threads, so I’m not going to post the picture again. I don’t want to get in trouble!)
