It always amazes me when somebody makes something like this.  5 out of 5 thumbs way up!

are you sure? i have some old 4.5 volt motors, and they work just fine. but anyway, i do not like pf in many sets. i prefer something really cool, and really complex. i mean , if 8070 were not motorized, it could actually be a legitimate successor to 8880 and 8448. in short, lego needs to stop motorizing every stinkin' set. because of the fact that rechargable boxes like that cost $50. what i do is use regular rechargable batteries, which is a lot less costly. sorry, just had to be said.

what is "technic"?
Saberwing40k replied to KEvron's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
i think technic is about: aesthetic function technique authenticity these guys are not in any particular order, but rather exist as a 4 way balance. most racers sets are about aesthetic now, but once they were a lot closer to Technic, because some had motors and radio control, and used primarily Technic elements. i hate the new racers, which are stupidly simple, and not all that diverse. but anyway, Technic models have that sort of aesthetic, at least now. i kinda miss the really stylized nature of some of the older models have. they also have real functions, like what you would see on a real version of that vehicle. (mostly) they are made primarily out of technic parts, which contributes to the aesthetic. and finally, the look real, or at least plausible. (at least now. back in the late 90's early 00's, they looked really futuristic.) hope it helps, a little. -
Gearbox help
Saberwing40k replied to Saberwing40k's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
no, buggy motors are not more powerful, at least going by philo's comparative sheet. they are also less efficient, and i don't have any. and how would you hook 4 buggy motors to one regular gearbox and not have it be destroyed by the speed? -
Are you sure? 8110 is arguably not any more advanced then 8868. but at the same time, 8110 looks far better. and while now we have power functions, back in 2002 we had a rf remote control system, whereas power functions is only ir but other than that, the only time i can think of that lego models of the present that are inferior to models of the past are 8070 and 8297, both of which were successors to 8448 and 8466, respectively, and had inferior features.but to be fair, both of the former look a lot more like actual vehicles than there predecessors, and had power functions. i miss when lego technic was stylized, rather than hyper realistic like it is now.

Okay, so i'm building a large trial truck, and i want it to have a remote control gearbox. only problem is, i also want it to have 4 xl motors for propulsion. i'm looking for a gearbox that: has at least 4 speeds is tough enough to withstand the power of 4 xl motors being crammed through it. (or just being in a truck.) is easy to remote control with only one motor currently, i have a modified version of Sariel's 4 speed linear gearbox, and a shifting mechanism. only problem is that that is bulky and hard to mount. Any ideas? thanks in advance!

i made this... sorry for the blurry pic, but this was taken a long time ago. it's fire lord, with a new head. it dosn't show up well, but that head has a mohawk. i made this thing after i came up with the whole 2.0 head mohawk thing, and gave him a big honkin' guitar. sort of a punk rock villain,if you will. wait, that's a great idea. lego should totally do a punk rock themed villain.

So, yeah, it's an ongoing project. and no, i'm not trying to be accurate or anything. this is just one of the many insane what if's i come up with on a daily basis. Anyway, who wants to try to come up with a backstory for this? if you have a good idea, just post in this thread. the one i choose will get a here cookie. another work in progress pic for your pleasure: I've modified the shoulder fin on one side so that it splits open, but it doesn't look to good from the front. so, what do you think? should i make both fins open, or should i stick with the other non opening ones?

b. and i am quite sure that the new motors are redundant. the money spent developing the motors would be better spent elsewhere, like making an rf receiver and transmitter. d. like above, except worse, because realism is one of the three legs of the technic trifecta. e. yeah, i know, but why did it have to be remote control out of the box, when it could have been a supercar with available remote control conversion?
-
Sigh... the more i look at this model, the less likely it is that i will buy it. okay, it looks cool to be certain, but: a.) it's expensive, especially given the part count ($223 dollars. ouch.) b.) no new parts aside from the motors, what the crap. it's not like the new servos are even tremendously useful, and the same function could have easily been achieved with existing parts. seriously, why did they do the whole new motors when existing ones would work? and worse, they missed a very good opportunity to reintroduce a radio control system. c.)the build is not particularly challenging or innovative. d.) they missed a lot of details, like a fake engine, and cockpit steering.(it doesn't even have functional headlights, which it totally should.) e.) all in all, i think they missed a good opportunity to do a true supercar, with locking differentials, adjustable suspension, and all that. in relation to the unimog, this set is a bit of a let down. i mean, the unimog was not perfect, but it had 4 wheel drive, suspension, and all the functions. it was challenging to build, and well engineered, and this just seems thrown together.
