42056 - Porsche Speculation
Lipko replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Short panels at last! And hopefully a sequential gearbox. I mean there's no H pattern at the gear stick. Sorry if these were aready mentioned, I got too excited. I'm very curious how obsolete this model will make the current supercar MOCs (I mean new gearbox parts, new suspension parts, etc). EDITed typos. Browser's eating my keystrokes. -
[WIP] 4WD platform
Lipko replied to Didumos69's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What will prevent the upper ball joint on the hub to be pushed more into the hub, thus weakening the lower ball joint connection? Plus how will the connector at the lower ball joint keep its position? -

It looks awesome, I like the minimalist body design. -
Stripped Test Car

Now I remember that I used to twist the pins while pulling out when I was a kid. And yes, the above poster is right that materials in contact, especially plastics and rubbers, can "stick" together with time. This effect is called "Monday Morning Effect" sometimes. This doesn't mean that the friction increase is permanent, as soon as you separate the surfaces, they will have normal friction again. I don't know how ABS behaves though. -

I wasn't a strong kid or anything, and I could pull out a big quantity of them (disassembling a whole model). Or there was a generation before '92 that was even worse (and the pins in older sets, like 8865, was replaced)? -

I got this model for Christmas when I was 7 (in 1992), and I remember than after finishing it and paying with it for some hours, I disassembled if to build the B model, then disassembled it to rebuild the A model again. So I don't get this pin thing Krumbbl is saying. -

Still my favorite official set. Looks so rugged and sexy. And to be honest, I don't like the two mods at all. -
[MOC] Simple Supercar
Lipko replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you for the comments! A short video about the functions: Also I'm making instructions with MLcad. I will complete a less detailed version in the following weeks, detailed enough for anyone with little experience to build. I will see how it goes and make a properly detailed version. I will make some renders/versions with different colors, especially for the interior (my girlfriend couldn't get used to this red interior, she calls it attention whoreish). -
The telehandler is awesome, and the hotrod looks cool too from the side, but I think you should make the cabin much wider.

I was one on the yellow guys, but I still think this is the best looking Lego car along with Hartley's Huayra I've see so far (to be honest, I wasn't a fan of your previous stacked beam body designs).

[TC9] Sun Speeder/Sun Stinger
Lipko replied to BusterHaus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Awesome model apart from the steering wheel. And the discussion turned into a interesting one. I agree and don't agree with Appie the same time. For example that rubber part is anything but good for suspension. It was designed for deformation, but it deforms permanently even under relative low stress and it has hysteresis, so I would never use in it a suspension that is played with. Busherhaus' suspension looks much more endurable than a rubber suspension would look. But I'm very curious how far would TLG would go with durability, I almost started a thread about it. For example, do they have drop tests? My newest supercar fell from about 1.5 m on its rear and a thin liftarm broke (apart from that, nothing disintegrated...). Is it a problem, TLG would redesign it to be more part friendly (disintegrates easier but parts don't break)? -

Looks good with the bigger panels! My only reason for not using them is that the wheels will push them if the suspension is compressed or steered. For this reason I struggled with the front hood for very long, every other solution either looked off or collided with the suspension. -
Yes, the instructions for leading the tubes are rather poor. I can imagine how frustrating that can be for a young kid.

[MOC] Simple Supercar
Lipko replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The model is up on Rebrickable: http://rebrickable.c...simple-supercar I'm very surprised that it contains so many parts, I don't know what portion consumes so many parts... Probably the bonnet and the interior. Anyways, the main parts are grouped, the model should be quite easy to build, it uses current and I think common parts. Maybe the only exception is the wheel hub for the front suspension . EDIT: there seems to be some errors with the parts list on Rebrickable. It says 2390 parts while in LDD there is only 2329 parts (not counting the hubs). EDIT 2: fixed most errors. Some part quantities was calculated wrong somehow. -
Opinion on Status of SBrick
Lipko replied to knotian's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The "urge" to express the "not impressive as 100% Lego" feelings usually come (at least for me) when so much praise can be seen about something that's using non-Lego for solving the hardest problems. -

Yes, blue would also look good and a bit less "provoking". But the blue Bionicle tooth parts are quite old now, I wanted to use more current parts. The interior is almost 100% buildable in blue. -

Thank you for the comments! The build seems to be quite dense, but actually it's the most efficiently built model I've made so far, so it is an easy build. I still have to optimize a few bits for building (pins with bushes instead of pins, redundant pins and connections, etc). A WIP shot of the chassis (the steering wheel console and the front are changed since then) -

Thank you for the comments! About the color scheme: all orange would be awesome but still very hard to implement. All white: would be too expensive for me (at least this time). All red is an option, but we are all tired of red cars. I actually wanted to have light blue or green instead of the orange, but seems to be impossible yet. -
This is my latest MOC, a simple supercar. My goal was to make a supercar with realistic proportions and motor placement (as low as possible), simple but reliable features and sturdy structure that would endure childs' play. Features: Independent suspension Hand of god and cockpit steering Rear wheel drive V8 fake engine 3+R gearbox adjustable rear wind/spoiler (from the cockpit) scissor doors (it doesn't have remote operation) everything opens The model was play-tested by a 2,5 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. The doors are locked by a simple mechanism and the bonnet is suspended by shocks. Short video, some chassis photos and a LDD file is coming soon. More pictures (not public yet): http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=559472 Development story: I started developing in February 2015, but that time I wanted a manual sequential gearbox and advanced suspension geometry. After about 10 iterations of the sequential gearbox, I failed to make a reliable gearbox that doesn't require big force to operate. The main problem was that the new driving rings require quite a big force to operate, and in many cases, the linkage failed to disengage one of them, leaving both driving rings in engaged state. I didn't want to use the old rings with the smooth connectors, because that is not quite legal (at least that was the consensus at that time). I wanted to build a model that uses 100% legal techniques, so I hat to let the sequential gearbox feature go, and set the new goals of a simple but reliable car focusing on good looks.

Opinion on Status of SBrick
Lipko replied to knotian's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
For me, fitting 100% inside the boundaries of the hobby's system is a big, if not the biggest part of that hobby. And as a part of this approach in case when a model wouldn't fit into the system (needs too much power, the parts are not strong enough, parts are not in the proper scale, needs too much tweaking that requires careful positioning/measuring/tools, etc), I just cancel the model as a whole (obviously an SBrick contest is an exception). For me, Lego model is a toy that's meant to be played with and built by children (or has to be easy to build by a child). But that's just my opinion and prefrence about Lego. -
Manitou Telehandler
Lipko replied to Jurgen Krooshoop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sorry, I meant telehandlers with telescopic boom. It's quite simple mechanically, but I think it's an important play feature. -
It's surprising that some of you talk about MOCing speed just like set building speed. I envy MOCers whose bottleneck is the building speed. I, myself, spend 95% with thinking and 5% with actual building (and it still seems too much because I build things that could be avoided with a bit more efficient problem solving).
