Well, here are some pics from other angles of the truck! You can see a gap between the universal joints in the first picture because I don't know how to attach the 4L axle between them when they have an angle on LDD. I can't get the angles to line up so the axle will fit through them. But, that gap means an axle is suppose to be there. I hope this isn't just a problem with me, but it is taking more than 3 hours just to render the custom remote control I made for this truck on Pov Ray. Is that normal? Remote only uses 59 pieces...My PPS was 700 when it was clearing up the rough edges, but it dropped to 66 when it came to fine tuning rendering.

Yup, I promise more high quality photos. I am just tweaking things/adding details. I am also working with the instructions and trying to fix that. I may actually submit this model for LEGO IDEAS, so I am trying to polish this creation as much as possible :D

Oh man, I don't meet expectation at all. But remember, those are the new 49.5mm x 20mm wheels, not the normal truck wheels people use that are 62.4mm. x 20mm (as seen on 8285), meaning this truck isn't a huge hulking monster. I wanted to make this MOC compact and not too big so people can easily afford the pieces. I also made the trucks out of modern pieces (pieces that are used since 2012), so people don't have to go hunting for ancient pieces or buy expensive old pieces/colors of pieces from bricklink. So, the L-motor version has 1247 pieces while the XL-motor version has 1240 pieces (but I may update some designs soon, so the pieces count may reach 1300, which I don't want to exceed). Sorry for the basic images right now, I am rendering some good ones on POV Ray, but it takes hours per image since my laptop isn't the fastest out there. Description - Inspired by set 8285. This MOC itself is very TLG styled - Studless, compact and rigid design - Comes in three colors: Red, Black, and limited edition Winter White (each for version 1.2 and 1.3) - 1240 pieces - Full RC Features - Manually opening bonnet/hood - Manually opening doors - Adjustable mirrors (I did not add any antennas, because it made it look ugly) - Full RC, using 2 IR receivers and basic IR remote (I am designing a better version using the IR speed controller) - Truck version 1.2 uses L-motor for drive, and is 6 x 4, meaning all 4 wheels in back turn with separate differentials - Truck version 1.3 uses XL-motor to drive - Features servo motor to steer, and m-motor to switch 2-speed gearbox - Version 1.2: 1st gear = 11.7:1 ratio, 2nd gear = 3.9:1 ratio - Version 1.3: 1st gear = 6.5:1 ratio, 2nd gear = 2.3:1 ratio - Also feature a concept lockable fifth wheel, very simple and compact in design. But still not sure if it is 100% fool-proof Here is the Winter White version.

Hello everybody! I making this topic to showcase my first ever real MOC. I have made things before, but never something exceeding 20cm in length before, or something complex. This MOC is inspired by those beautiful long-nose semi trucks I see on the road everyday here in Canada. I am also inspired by the works of 2LegoOrNot2Lego and Sariel, two people who I say make some of the best trucks out of Lego, visually and technically. For my MOC, I used LDD since I do not have many parts for a semi truck in general, and money wise, I can't afford much right now. This is also my first time using LDD. I have no clue how to use those more advanced programs like LDraw. I am rendering better photos (POV) for my MOC, and an in-depth description of my MOC will follow shortly, but here are some crude teasers :D I made 2 models. One black and one red. Visually, they look the same, except for the color, but internally, they are a bit different. Can you guys guess what features this truck will have? This is my first real MOC, so it is a bit simplistic, but you can still give it a shot! Don't be disappointed to find out it will probably not have most of the extravagant function you guys will hope for :P Aside from the teaser pictures, I didn't make this post for nothing :D I have a questions to ask. I used LDD to make these trucks, and it allows me to generate instructions. But how can I convert the animated instructions into some readable copy? Like a PDF or something, something I can print? I am never gonna sell anything, so I also want to have a PDF file for you guys!

Technic General Discussion

You can see how the IR receiver fits perfectly in my MOC. But there is a panel above it, and an opening beside it. I wanna see if it can still receive a signal (I really don't want to redo my MOC). Here is the pic (p.s., can someone tell me how to post flickr photos?). -

Can IR receivers work through one-stud-length of technic beams? Well, I am building something on LDD, and I have the IR receiver out of site, behind a technic panel, that is around 1 stud in width. There are holes on it, obviously, for connecting pins, so I thought the basic IR controller can still send a signal that the receiver can receive, even if it is within my model, behind a panel. But, I have never tried this in real life ( I am working on LDD, and don't own IR controllers and receiver XD). Any input will be helpful, and thanks in advance! -
General Part Discussion

I have a question. Why does LDD have two tan 20 tooth double conical gears in its palette? I also noticed this when I checked the inventory for 8285 (2009) and 42030 (2014) on the Lego website, and it showed that the 20 tooth tan gear for 8258 was out-of-stock while the 20 tooth tan gear for 42030 was in stock; this means they are different gears. Was there a change in this toothed wheel? Was this a material change, like, the new gears are made of different quality plastic? I hope not, but I heard that the quality for Lego in general is getting more cheap/worse, so these new 20 tooth gears may not be as good as the old ones. Please, prove me wrong XD- 5,465 replies

I am wanna see which AA batteries are best for maximum performance and have a long lasting charge, for the PF battery box. I am looking around shops and I think 2500 mah batteries will be best, but does company brand matter? Like, are Energizer batteries better than other not-well-company brand batteries, even if they are both 2500 mah, and 1.2v? Also, does Lenmar make good rechargeable batteries? For me, good means good battery life, and consistent performance (like, the battery performs the same for everyone, not one guy has some good batteries, while other people have bad ones, meaning the company makes inconsistent batteries). I was looking here but I am not really smart, and was confused. But it seemed like Energier batteries performed really well. Still, I need your answers/opinions! -

Back to topic please. About the a-model functions, does anyone else feel that the turntable rotation is too fast and jerky? Also, for the b-model. how do you think the 5th wheel on the truck works? -

About the b-model, how does the wire reach from the motor to the battery box? Look at how far the distance is between them (motor in trailer and battery box behind cab of truck). Also, I like how the trailer of the truck has some solid build to it, unlike the flatbed trailer of the b-model of Lego 8285. I also see how the two extra wheel became spare wheels, one each for the trailer and the truck. EDIT: Is the battery box on the truck, or the trailer? I don't know actually. -

I highly doubt they won't release this set in Canada. I have never seen them NOT release the flagship set in Canada. Although, I am not too sure what happened with 8258 in 2009. -
Yah, now that I searched up more images, you aren't too far off with the wheels. The actual truck is alot larger than most trucks of its type, and it actually is pretty large for the size of wheels it uses. Nevertheless, this is one complicated model, with lots of neat functions. It would be nice if you can find more panels for the front end of the truck, maybe using newer version of the fairings instead of the older model panels to add uniform and flow to your model. Or maybe just some readjusting of the existing panels on the truck to give it a better finish/outer body.

Man, this thing is crazy complex, and very large and detailed (like the tire mudguard flaps details). Also, just look at that gear maze! But in all honesty, your wheels are way out of proportions. I think you need larger wheels (wheels on this set would maybe suit it), or you made your truck a bit to wide, and tall. Everything is so cool on it, but the wheel size just bugs me :3

Technic General Discussion

Ok, so I want to rebuild Lego 8258, using new(ish) parts. I never had the chance to get this set, since I live in Canada. I have the Unimog (8110), but I never really liked it much. I built it once, then dismantled it recently. So I have 2048 pieces to work with, plus all the pieces from set 8068 (I got this set as a brand new gift, never built). I went to a website, and saw which pieces I am missing. I am able to buy all the parts directly from the Lego website, however, I have a question. Do parts that say "out of stock" ever come back in stock? One part that says "out of stock" is this one Another part is this one ^ However, for this part (second pic), I can find an alternative one with the new extra holes in it (which I don't like but whatever). I never tried calling them but before I do, do you think the red long, smooth panel (first picture) will ever be in stock? -

^ I am still glad they added suspension in a 8258 scaled model. I have noticed complex suspension systems appeared only recently (since the Unimog). Happy to see it is also present in this compact model. But about the functions, I think the outriggers deploy a bit to fast, and same with the turntable (superstructure rotation). I know some people favor the fast speed, but I like the slow-yet-powerful approach. Looking at various vids and pics, I still cannot see well into the gearbox, this model is packed way too tightly. -

Yup, the buckets are new. However, we still have the same pump, 6L in length. I think they just changed the color from LGB to blue. Also, some other pics I screenshotted...here you can maybe see more of the front set of the wheels. -

Well, I am just gonna post some higher res pics of the videos we already watched. I can't really deduce anything from them, maybe you can. I think this is how the inline 6 cylinder engine is setup, but I may have drawn it a single cylinder too forward. All I know, there are 6 cylinders. You can see other high res-ish pics here if you can find anything new in them. -
Problem with Parts Cracking
sama replied to therealjustin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I just disassembled the Unimog (8110). And although I didn't pay any attention to any specific areas for cracks, I didn't notice any large and easily noticeable cracks as shown on the connector of 8070 on the first post of this thread. I will probably go have a look and forcefully search for any cracks. I kept my Unimog in a closet with sliding doors, so it was dark in there but not air tight (easy air flow in and out because of weak sliding doors). I also kept a thick folded towel under the Unimog to support it, and not allow the tires to touch the shelf (relive some stress from the model). And it has been doing this for 3 years. I have a question though. I took it apart and washed all the pieces with warm water and mild soap because some of the dust that collected on it would not come off if only using a cloth (the layers of dust formed like a impenetrable layer of sticky-ish dust). Now I put all the pieces in a large tub (once dried), that is fairly air tight. Should I remove it from the tub, since I hear people taking about pressure and humidity causing cracks? Please help. I wanna use these pieces to rebuild model 8258. And it is already costing me 280 CAD dollars to buy the extra missing pieces. I don't want to buy more because of broken Unimog pieces. -
Real power of Lego motors?
sama replied to ben20's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have a question, is it better to use 6, 1.2v rechargeable batteries, or use 6, 1.5v alkaline batteries? All I can read is that 7.2v performance is lower than the performance with 9v (for Power Function elements, like in 8043). But a while back, people told me it is better to use the rechargeable batteries. -

Oh, I see. So both axles are essentially just floating there, other than two bars on each axle connecting to the frame, and ofcourse the springs/leaf springs? It also looks like that means it isn't independent suspension then. But nonetheless, it is very technical, and a nice challenge for Lego to put this much complexity in a smaller scale set. -

It does have a drive shaft. But this drive shaft just connect to the dummy engine to animate it. Wait, so what is the difference between the rear suspension on the Lego Mercedes Benz Arocs, the suspension on the Lego Unimog, and the suspension on Lego 9398? -

Here are pictures to show that the rear set of wheels also have independent suspension, since I see no other picture on this thread to show. I now understand why they would use hard springs for the front and not the back, because the front has the battery box, meaning more weight there. Hard springs seems like the right choice while soft springs are good for the back set of wheels.
