They are merely chests, made of wood. -
I thought british people were able to see sarcasm...

being able to see what wood something is, is hardly botany.

Heroica RPG - Quest #23: Guarding the Guards

As soon as Atramor picks up the second staff, a deafening noise, seemingly coming from the staff, starts going off. It sounds a mix of the sound of an elephant and a crying child. Atramor, surprised by the loud sounds, puts it back down, and the sound stops. A wooden label attached to the staff reads: 'The Staff That Can Not Unnoticably Be Stolen'. A voice from above says: "You are supposed to be finding my magnifying glass, not rummaging through my staves!" -

The staff seems to be a solid wooden thing, it could probably take a few blows. The frog on top is also made out of wood, crafted with quite a bit of skill. The ornament is painted lifelike, and the shaft of the staff is painted in a beautiful shade of red. Atramor deducts that the wood used for the staff is grey ash, and the frog part is made out of basswood. He can find no imperfections in the wood, and the staff does not seem to have suffered from any wear. It does not seem to hold any remarkable qualities or magical power. In short: it is useless for the party. -

"Oh? Well, I've received... 'correspondence' that there are currently quest sign-ups going for trouble in a quarry." Guts reaches into his pockets, and pulls out a small tube made of wood, in it is a piece of paper. "The message is a bit vague, but it looks like it could be profitable." In his mind, Guts added: 'and far from the civilized world, and therefore, them.' The rogue pondered if he should once again change names. So far, he had remained mostly anonymous, and no one in Heroica knew his true identity. But if the earlier reports were accurate, and they had indeed made their way to Eubric, he could not be too safe. From a slightly worried state, Guts' face changed into the grinning kind, and said: "But if you rather want to spend time in a forest, be my guest." -

"I don't know, they were there when I woke up today, haven't had any customers because of them! They did not try to get in or anything, though. But are you ready to get in to the basement?" -

"You are observant, and you would be right. Over the years, my basement has become a storage area for a plethora of things, magic or otherwise. I would advise you to be careful." -

"Oh! You don't seem to be with that Wolfgang, which is good! Welcome to my Antiquary, stay as long as you like, just be careful to not break anything. An amulet you say? Let me see, oh yes, well, quite peculiar, interesting, fascinating!" For a good ten minutes, the dwarf examines the amulet, holding it from every angle, before finally saying: "I don't think this is an amulet, there does not seem to be a hole for a cord or chain anywhere. It seems to be made of some sort of stone, but I have not seen any stone of this texture and colour. The markings are engraved, and then painted. I do not recognize them from anywhere, but I have an idea. With a magnifying glass, I could perhaps work out how, and more importantly: where, it was crafted. But there is a slight problem, I seem to have, err, misplaced my magnifying glass in my basement. It should be in a chest, somewhere. If you can find me my magnifying glass, I will forget the usual fee, for having me examine items like this!" -

As Guts safely stored his share, and packed up his digging apparatus, he said: "I believe this is all, we have been through the whole mine, and taken care of everything here. I suggest we go back." Guts started walking towards the exit of the mine. -

Atramor goes on to distract the gang-members. As soon as Atramor starts speaking, they come at him with weapons drawn. Since the door to the antiquarian is now unguarded, the other three heroes quickly slip towards the door, which opens without trouble. Minutes later, Atramor opens the door, McCaffery seems to be missing a few feathers, and Atramor's hat has a few slices, but he does not seem to have been in major combat. As soon as Atramor is inside, the party bars the door from the inside. And not a minute to soon, as bit later, they hear someone trying to open the door. Through a window to the side, the party can see the Wolfgang outside, but they do not seem to make any more effort to get inside. Finally, the heroes turn around. The party can see a dwarf, and a whole lot of junk. -

WB, your previous quest was amazing, one of the funnest to follow. I hope this one is the same style, then it will be great! A thing I like to see, (In all quests, btw) is crossover npc's.

"Heh, someone reasonable. Finally, I'll dig it up." Guts digs with his shovel. "Should we share what we find? We should also warn him to leave, afterwards, don't want the mining guild to find him, don't think they would take kindly to someone living in their mine..." -
