The Blacksmith's workshop - Part I: The house and story
SlyOwl replied to El Bucanero's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
So are you going to fix it or not? Have you still got this built? There is scope for a great interior! ;-) SlyOwl -
Me, I've had 2 titles: "Pirate King!!!" and "BBQ King". The first came as a result of my winning the Pirate Halloween contest, and Phes gave it to me when he gave me my position of Pirate King, as a temporary measure before I chose my own. I was rather stuck for a title, and, as I wanted to maintain the King part and I'd built a BBQ vignette for the build-off, I chose BBQ King. SlyOwl

I like this, but I'd condense it into an 8x8 vig, to make it more compact, and so more detailed and so better use of the space and so better... SlyOwl

I picked this up at Argos for

*Sigh!* Another towny! X-D It's nice to have you anyway! :-D SlyOwl

X-D This features in the Brikwars inspiration, or whatever - Brikwars does cater for firing weaponry, but to be honest, rules about when you can fire your cannons are incredibly annoying - it's so much more fun to fire as fast as possible, without precision-aiming. Little Wars is a game I have considered in the past, but Brikwars, IMO, is much more entertaining and expansive. Also, the language is more modern and the graphics superb. So, if you want to fire guns, just fire, but if you want simulation, use Brikwars - there's little point in this game to me. SlyOwl

Looks like London to me...although I wouldn't recommend it - you'll have your Lego stolen before you can start building! Well, that would be if Lego was an instantly valuable commodity ;-) Edit: woops, I thought that was where Lugnet members live...I've now realised it's the major towns and cities :-$ SlyOwl, from London

Do'h!!! I just found this new photo on BS and checked each page...until the last... :'-( How do you think it will balance? Weights? SlyOwl
-
Yes. Phes? I'm a Pirate King... SlyOwl

I love this! I saw it on BS before you posted, and immediatly recognised it as a guaranteed CCCV entry - the quality and style...It also reminds me of Soldiers On Ice...I guess the horizontal use of blue bricks... SlyOwl

I see you had your turn at keychain massacre! X-D That machine gun belt would work really well in a castle model, as some kind of drastic weapon... SlyOwl

Could be a pirate! So...you follow in my steps... SlyOwl, formerly of Brickset.

I'm always a nice touch! X-D SlyOwl

Umm...that's this topic... :-P My sorting story: To start with, as is standard, my Lego lived all over the living room floor, and in 2 Lego tubs when it needed transporting or tidying away. Sitting in the middle of this, I would happily build for hours, loosely sorting 'useful' (cool X-D ) parts into groups nearby; they'd be mingled with the rest none-the-less, but in an extremely vague sort of order - I knew where to find them. However, one thing I refused to do was the norm for my friends of that generation - let a mixture of K'NEX, green and metal army men, bits of paper and blue tack and a motley assortment of everything else, including instructions, into my Lego. IMO, once you do that, you're doomed. I kept my baseplates at that time seperately (at least, at the back of the pile) and my instructions very seperate - they had their own box! I was rarely allowed to keep any boxes - as space was limited, my Mum would cut the pictures of the alternate models and main picture out and glue them into little collages which I kept with my instructions. Of course I did have a loose sorting system in one tub: You can see slots for more dividers and 16x32 boards slide in for the lids, and I used these to sort out grey parts and wheels...but nothing serious or permanent... :-) My first real sorting began when I moved house; I had been given the second largest bedroom to accomodate my Lego (by now my parents had decided that I wouldn't stay up all night playing...I think I've gone back to my old ways though - Late night builds on! :-D )...but by then my collection had got too big for the two boxes and so I expanded, sorting by colour only (everything, including minifigs), except black, which was divided into bricks, large parts and other parts. I only really began to sort by type when the Recording Studios next to my house were redeveloped into flats, and I came across a pile of interlocking trays in the skip and I took these onto my desk and sorted my bricks into them. As my collection grew, I had to rearrange the trays time and time again. One major problem was that there were too many trays - they outnumbered the tray-cases, so I placed the trays inside my desk drawers. My Gran was throwing away a mid-sized amount of the same ones, and I picked these up too. I had to move all my castle BURPS into a tub, but that was it. At this point, I was sorting by type only, apart from my 2x4 bricks. I then expanded on these trays and drawers by storing parts in flower pots and medicinal bottles e.t.c...but this was inefficient, so when I had built up a reasonable collection of plastic bags off BL, I used these. I sorted my bricks by colour only (much more efficient) and that's where I am now...my only loose parts being my Fabuland crow, my elephant and Xpod cases, as well as cloth parts. I like my system, but I do enjoy (and miss!) a good old rummage through a box of mixed up Lego, like at an uneducated friend's house X-D SlyOwl

I think the time period you quoted is slightly wrong - I would place it between 2000 and 2006; the main product-related factors for the Dark Ages being, IMHO: -Trains: too many! Around half of ech catalogue, especially towards the beginning was just trains! Granted, they're nice enough for AFOLs, but how many children have the money to buy an engine, some carriages and a track, all at

Welcome to the Piratical part of EB...the Pirate Forum... :-/ X-D That's great! Lucky bugger with your SES and CC... |-/ A few areas I feel could be improved: Hmm...I'm inclined to disagree...I don't really like the waves much; they're too...well, the troughs aren't rough enough, IMO; a deserted fortress needs some wild weather and spray, not an oil-sea! *sweet* The last picture doesn't quite work for me... VEG!!! All those bare rock faces need some greenery! You're a terrible sufferer from big greywall syndrome! One cure is plenty of veg - it covers up the grey, reduces the visibility of any dust and allows for great detail, suh as animals and more concealed hiding places. I don't really like the staircases A stone staircase hanging like that? The army doesn't quite look like an army - IMO they all need to be identical... Taking these into account, I would build smaller, so fitting more detail in - to me it looks like you've gone for size, not detail. Good try, but room for improvement! Shameless self-promotion on! :-P SlyOwl

Which is the third figure in Temple Escape? - the glare hides the face...Pedro? A Native? SlyOwl -
Thanks for the review! *y* What I like about the set: -Carrot torch -10 snakes -Indy -New "scared" face -Ark -SW stickers! Do you think they needed the SW license for that? -Ruined Adventurers pillars What I don't like: -Stickers -New skeleton, not old -Not as "complete" as the Truck and Bike chase - they have the key parts; no scenery...the trouble with movie sets is where do you stop? Shouldn't there be a trapdoor? e.t.c... That was the problem with Spiderman, IMHO; look at SW - just vehicles, very few bases, and the ones they do use are complete((ish)... I think the spare stickers are for MOCs - it could be a new marketing tactic: Free stickers to customise your Lego included! They're useful which ever way you look at it. Slyowl

Im stuck on lego star wars the game!!
SlyOwl replied to legolover100's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Yeah, I got stuck there too when I first played, but persistence got me through! It's quite hard though - you shoot the tan parts by jumping up and down and shooting... SlyOwl -
These look strangely familiar...Dr Sinister took them: see here. Try searching before posting new threads. :-) SlyOwl
