I quite like the wildlife variety, with a good number of accessories for the pirate, but I'd make that shovel either an axe or a gun, since there's no apparent reason to dig anywhere on that build. I like the way the foliage mostly hides the play feature (which is a great way to add a lot to a little thing), and I quite like the variety of lime green, green and red. But I do agree about the campfire's fire piece, and I'd make that back 1x1 LBG brick a 1x2 slope to add some extra parts variety.

Fair enough, I will still recommend adding a chicken breast, even more so for such a recent campfire, since it's unlikely they are re-eating old meat...

I won't bother with a full review since this build has received more activity in 5 hours than most builds get in 5 weeks. But I feel like the rudder should be axed (pun not intended), since the axe is too small to look credible and the other options won't fit, I'd use this new space for a small stud shooter with a handle (a bit like a swivel gun) as it would add some play value. As for the rest of the ship, it's really good, so no complaints there.

Theme So, the cannibalism is surprisingly ok, as there was a POTC set which came with cannibals. There's a lot to like besides that aspect, with some good details and accessories : a parrot, some weapons, a skeletal hint that this isn't the first victim, which really adds to the atmosphere of the whole thing, as does the scared face on the poor fellow. I would however consider adding an extra weapon for the pirate to be able to make an escape, and I'd personally make that bone a chicken breast piece-since not even cannibals can eat bones. Build The old style colours work well and add to the build's look, but the use of brown and black for wood looks strange (the log is brown but the cooking contraption is black), I'd make 'em use the same colour to add consistency (or even better : the ones most exposed to fire should be black, like the fireplace's bottom, but the ones not yet over-exposed, like the new wood or the log at the front, should be brown). The contraption is quite detailed and the foliage adds just a little colour to an otherwise drab background.

The update looks much better, but the rockwork ought to be remade ; it looks far too straight. 10320's rockwork is good inspiration, since they both are trying to do the same thing but your version looks too artificial, I would make the rocks look like they're a little more random and a little less linear.

[ENTRY] Remake of 6234 Renegade’s Raft
Horation replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
As others have said, the background is...weird (especially with such a , the pirate has no food (no fabled fabadas!) and no friend (human or animal), and the benches should just be removed (use barrels and crates to hold the atttachments, it'll appear more seamless and much cleaner). But overall, it's quite good, with it being surprisingly original (the leaves and the attachments), especially the asymmetrical design, well done! -
[ENTRY] 6500 A Promiscuous Sailor Captain (Mini Set)
Horation replied to JopieK's topic in Pirate MOCs
As you yourself know, the setting is... inappropriate. But it does the job quite well and tells a story without needing to spell out almost anything. I would like to see some coblestone pattern of some soet with a 12 more pieces or so on the floor. -
No amount of debate will convince me that a 1x100 plate wouldn't have its uses, and I need a 1E6 plate for my minifig scale deathstar so... I will admit I didn't know they made 1x5s (even the Titanic uses some, surprised Jang didn't notice) and the number of parts nowadays is a little silly, but the point is that they are rarely essential in builds and the use of other parts makes it easier for all : supply chains, kids, etc... Then again, your solutions could work, and I wouldn't complain if it did happen.

Well that's an interesting take. I see it as more often than not an overdone effort, though I do concede it results in some clever techniques, but those can often be replicated without hiding any stud. And @TeriXeri what sphere build are you talking about? I'm not sure what it is you mean exactly
-
Well, to me, the spirit is being creative and showing studs is a part of that, since it makes adding and removing parts to the build much easier than with some giant polished blob of plastic that doesn't have studs showing and will require two weeks, a goat sacrifice to the elder gods, and a millitary-style plan to slightly modify the design crated using some eldricht building technique. Also, those builds often look less believable and blockier than ones without.

Answers : 1E6, 0, 100, 0.1 The reason why TLG doesn't make those other sizes is to streamline instructions and building, as Jangbricks was saying in his comparison of Cobi and Lego's Titanics, both have clear instructions and quality parts, but Lego's instructions are easier to follow and the build is completed more quickly since you have fewer 1 x somethings to sift through before finding the correct one, not a big deal to you, but a kid building a set might care...

[ENTRY] 1872 Imperial Guard Camp Remake (Mini Set)
Horation replied to thewatchman's topic in Pirate MOCs
I like the new version : the extra musket, the added details on the rocks (more DBG) and (sorry @iragm,t'is my fault) the officer is now legally holding the food item! I think it is ready for voting! -

If you must remove a leaf, the one to the left (on the islander statue) is the one that looks the most out of place. -
Theme The pirate has a map, a monkey, a crab, a sword and a musket. So there's really little that can be improved here, but as there is no gold or other treasure, it leaves obvious room for modification. I'd hide the treasure in the barrel, but since you already have a purpose for it, and because of the set's title, I'd just plop it somewhere on the build surface (ex:an ingot, a coin tile, etc...). Build The set has a good amount of detail-the puddle of rum is a good idea! The build does suffer from too much darkness-the fern pieces should be light green and the sand should be light tan, as it currently makes the whole set seem like it's set in the deep jungle and not on the beaches of the caribeans, other than that, the rocks are well done so I've got no other comments.
-
I personally quite like the white and red sails, but red could also work. As for the knife, that's your choice and the solution for extra treasure is brilliant (and shows why 50 part builds are so much fun).
-
Theme There's a minifig, a shark and a pistol, which is already enough. But you then also add a lot of room for posing the man on the raft, a small paddle and a knife, which gives a lot of options for kids. I quite like it, but I'd have replaced the knife with a gem hidden in one of the barrels, which would add some extra playability. Build The mix of tan, brown and black and brown is quite satisfying, but the sails look strange, since I've yet to see a green-sailed ship, and I think white or light tan would give a better contrast to the brown bottom. And I will say the hull is very tall, but I understand why.

[ENTRY] 1872 Imperial Guard Camp Remake (Mini Set)
Horation replied to thewatchman's topic in Pirate MOCs
Theme The minifigs look excellent, with the nutcracker torsos being really fitting for such a purpose. The simple fire is the only play feature, though the mystery behind the ancient statue is another, so good job on that front. However, the soldier should have a musket instead of a sword, as this would add both variety and accuracy (soldiers had muskets while officers had swords), and the officer is holding the fish using an illegal technique ; make him hold it with his hand if at all possible. Build The statue is a brilliant addition ; it is simultaneously believably abandoned looking (asymmetrical) and detailed enough to my taste. The well positioned fire is both good for play AND stability. The small ''tree'' is pretty good with these parts. But I'll recommend moving the soldier in the pictures so he doesn't hide the tree, and I'd make some of those small round 1x1 LBG tiles DBG to add variety -
An excellent classic set Theme The two pirates compliment one another well, and the small boat with a chest allows for the small fortifications to serve as a good cargo bay and defended storage point. There's quite a bit of space on the island, a pirate parrot, and weapons aplenty. Now I'd love to see a bottle of rum (1 piece) or a barrel of rum (2 pieces) which would really flesh things out and add some more playability. Build This really feels like and old timey design, with a good mix of yellow sand, black and grey walls and those palm foliage pieces. I will however complain about the entirely black second wall piece ; it should have some light grey brick print on it to give it some texture. So I'd either order such a part from bricklink or use waterslide decals and the likes to make my own version. But really that's fitting for the era (cost-cutting) so I can't complain too much, good job @Elephant Knight!

This is supposed to be a reimagining of the original, so I'm ok with more modern colours. (If the marquis shows up, I'll make an exception and accept him being old brown!)
-
I'll go one step further : SNOT is, most of the time, not following the Lego spirit, and while there are some cool builds done by people who use such techniques, it is often overdone. I also really dislike the over-reliance on details over functions-builds often look good from only one side, have little space for minifigs, and look impossible to live in for the local inhabitants-all the while still being finely built creations using the most advanced techniques. And, I'll get crucified for this one by the star wars fans, assault on Hoth was a fine playset, with it's only real flaw being the UCS label.
-
I would go with either the reddish brown classic monkey or, if you really insist on keeping it modern, the one on the far left will (begrudgingly) do on a mostly light tan beach.
-
@Thats No Moon,I hope you didn't take my previous comments too hard, as I was merely speaking my mind...
-
Well, this would likely require a few parts orders from bricklink-for which you might or might not have money for. The plates could be switched for updated colours (notably the water could be light blue and tan sand could be added). But it would also mean : ingots and masonry bricks and small pieces to make the walls, added red pieces to the wall, maybe adding 1x2 cheese slopes on the crenelations, etc... It concretely means using more modern parts (made after 2010) so as to improve the build's details. But a simple (and rather cheap) trick is to improve the lighting ; it looks too dark, which contributes to the overall darkness of the set.
-
A small build so here's a small review The minifig and monkey are nice-but I'd have preferred a darker monkey, as this one is hard to see on the tan sand. The rocks under the island look almost random to me, with 7(!) colours used for what should be one or two. Use a more consistent scheme, or keep the second version which works just as well in my opinion, but has the added bonus of looking much clearer.
-
This is a solid build which uses simple techniques in a complicated way. The use of so many small pieces creates texture, so good job there. I'd love to see some sort of siege of that fort. It would add a lot of value to the overall build.
