QM Note: Ater a discussion in the General Discussion topic, the Oculoid Amalgam's Tree Topple special has been modified to better accommodate special mirroring.
-
I said I was going to value your input most. I will be going with option number 2. it equates to almost the same amount of damage, and Karie could still potentially mirror it for high amounts of damage. Compromise, huzzah! Apologies to everyone involved in this debate, it was indeed one of those moment where I'm thicker than a brick wall. I'm just glad my 4.5 months of plotting and 11 full drafts won't get wasted.
-
The irony here is that I'm helping Kintobor plot his own boss battle. Hey, I would hardly call a special with a 0% chance of knocking you out "OP". Too bad enemies and heroes scale completely differently at this stage.
-
As a footnote: For any other enemy, I would switch to an exact mirror in a heartbeat, no exceptions. Boss Monsters have me hesitating because every single one goes through a minimum for 2 months of brainstorming and 4 drafts.
-
Witches are officially terrifying.
-
So, the choices are (I'll allow the spectators/questies to decide): -Keep it as-is (I highly doubt this will be chosen, and I fully understand the reason why) -Alter the special slightly ( "Does damage equal to Level x2 and removes one positive effect" - does a minimum of 104 damage back to the Amalgam) -Exact Mirror (Reduces the Amalgam to 1 HP.)
-
That's an entirely different situation, however. The rules for WP and multipliers are completely set in stone - An Enemy does not equal a Hero, and their specials can be something normally completely and utterly outside of a hero's grasp. I thought that changing the special would be more ill received than changing the mirror effect (I was cursing myself pretty heavily when the mirror was pointed out), but it appears I was mistaken. I'd be willing to change the special to "Does damage equal to Level x2 and removes one positive effect" or simply allow it to be mirrored exactly, but I'll leave that decision in the hands of the spectators/Kintobor, considering he is the one playing the Special Mirror-er in question.
-
Equal more along the lines of "I can't use my class's ability to its full capacity." As an Assassin, even if 50% of all enemies were immune to insta-kill, I personally would still be okay with it.
-
It's the equivalent of making a boss immune to insta-kill, in my mind. It happens to assassins all the time, I'm still allowing the Witch to do a sizable chunk of damage on the Amalgam, even when rolling a special. It's not as if an assassin is upset when they can't assassinate the big boss monster. Also: Amalgam is a one phaser, maybe 1.5. It'll have its specials buffed slightly, but that is all. I'd have to disagree with this. Tree Topple has a 0% chance of ever KOing the hero. If used on the Amalgam it completely circumvents the climatic encounter.
-
I'm also letting her spawn an ensemble of minions ready to kamikaze, and have her pull of a Mass Illusion when she mirrors the Technique Satellite. I think I balanced the ability of mirror fair enough.

"I find it astonishing, Necromancer... You describe the Witch and the Raider as some of the most pathetic and idiotic creatures you've ever encountered... An accurate assessment. And yet here you are, obeying her orders to the letter. Has the lap dog forgotten he's a wolf? Or are you just as worthless as the heroes and the hall you associate with?"

It's a game mechanic that promotes making meaningful choices and evaluating risk VS reward.
-
Already loving the Oculoid Amalgam's mechanic. (probably my second favorite, right before Perfect Regret.) I think that one-enemy bosses are something that hsould truly be explored in more depth. (Sure, the Amalgam has minions, but there is really only one main target.)

Althior cuts straight through the Amalgam's battle formation and shoots down the white-eyed Technique satellite in a burst of light. Johon gathers himself from his previous miss, chasing down the reinforcement Satellite. He narrowly avoids a jab from one of the Amalgam's many tentacles, striking down his target with a migty slash. The Oculoid Amalgam tries to bombard Althior with a flurry of darkness, but the necromancer rolls out of the way of the demon's onslaught of attacks. He lobs a ball of light at the monstrosity, hitting him squarely in the eye. karie conjurs an illsuion, fooling two of the Amalgam's satellites into serving her. The Oculoid Amalgam greedily snatches up the remaining satellites with his tentacles. His eye momentarily flickers away and the demon opens up its mouth, revealing a gaping maw of serated teeth. The Amalgam only recieves a fireball in his gut for eating the hexed satellites, but the Haste satellite grants him an impressive speed boost. Oh, I know. I think necromancers are pretty balanced right now, I'm just saying that a Critical hit always does damage, undead army or not.

Remember, folks, this was intended for the younger audience - kids who are too young to be able to actually use the 3D functionality. As a result, trusting a three-four-five-six year old with a hinged device would probably not hold up... Thus the 2DS's clamshell design. Honestly, I can see this selling very well come holiday season. You really can't say "no" to a $130 portable, especially with one with such an excellent library of games.
