Keolo silently catches the claw, holding the severed hand by the wrist. He looks at the Chief with a combination of melancholy and anger, holding the claw above is head. Just as the Chief seems to begin spewing another tirade of vitriolic words, Keolo brings the claw smashing down. The barbed talons of the claw slice through the Chief, practically destroying his eye. he stumbles back and collapses to the ground, ink from his body puring out from every wound. His body seems to deflate, pieces of him getting scattered across the barren clearing. he rasps out one final sentence: "Master... I've failed you..." The Chief is reduced to pile of writhing plasm, a pink eye smoldering with hatred staring out from inside the mass of ink. it stares down the four humans with scorn and resentment before flickering out and fading entirely, its plasmid corpse releasing the dark magic inside of it in a burst of light and dissolving away. The Chief was dead. Keolo drops the claw, panting from the physical exertion. "Hah... Mine is a dangerous profession, heroes. I've had so many curses and hexes put on me during my expeditions... Artifacts have poisoned me, relics have cursed me, guardians have attempted to destroy me. I've lost my youth to this job, and now I even have a permanent case of chills from one particularly frosty location. Its why I wear this bloody hood all the time. And yet... I loved my job. But the expedition for those damn documents was actually the second. The first time, the document's "protectors"... Those Oculoids... Took the life of the kid I was mentoring. Needless to say, it was a bit devastating. I knew my job was dangerous, but I never thought anyone's life was truly on the line. And then I gambled with one. And I lost. I retired for a couple of years, laid low in Taurost. This second expedition to get the documents was my first time stretching the old muscles again. And you know what? I enjoyed it. All that dribble the Oculoids were spewing about "meaning" and "purpose"? I just do what makes me happy, and it seems to be working pretty damn well. So, farewell, heroes. Best of luck on your travels - I have the feeling we may meet again." QM Note: Just say your good-byes to Keolo and I'll put the ending of the quest up.

Heroica RPG- Quest #78: As Thick As Thieves
Endgame replied to Kintobor's topic in The Heroica Archive
I look down at Lydia, eyes downcast at her mangled body. I got down on one knee, choosing my words carefully. "Lydia. I am undead. I am 428 years old, and yet only lived for one of them. I have known every single disgrace. Stabbed by those I tried to help, every house I tried to live in torched to ashes. I drifted alone and hated, despised for what I was. But I am far from sinless. I've murdered, maimed, stolen... Lied, cheated, deceived, tortured. I killed my own great grand daughter without even knowing it. In a vain attempt to keep an illusion of humanity, my fiance - the woman I loved - forced herself into prostitution. Little did she know it was I who was extorted money from the family, spending it on ethereal drugs to keep my appearance. I'm the one who fled when she learned of my crimes, leaving her crying in the street, pregnant with my child. I've considered ending it many times, Lydia. The point is this: You have so much of your life ahead of you. Cherish it. Live life when you still have it. I'm not killing you, Lydia."- 418 replies

Heroica RPG- Quest #78: As Thick As Thieves
Endgame replied to Kintobor's topic in The Heroica Archive
My eyes dart between the two. "How do you two know each other? And Lydia, did they alter you beyond your mind, or did they have to physically change you to make you into an Iron Knuckle? Hopefully the armor can just come off and you can resume your daily life..." If Grimwald's healing doesn't work, I try a Grand Potion then a Phoenix Essence to get Lydia back up.- 418 replies

"You're in denial, you necromantic bastard." The chief spits, his voice wavering with every syllable. "We're beings closest to you in ideals you've ever met for a long, long time, Althior. Only you're too weak to take what you believe in to the logcial extreme. Say the Spark is just a fairytale? Maybe the documents are. Not even our Master is quite certain what created it. But the Spark is already ours. As for whether or not the Oculoids are superior... I know I am not, now. I am a failure on the field of battle. And yet, I am a faceless pawn... Nameless, with no possessions... Almost an object. And yet, you learned to hate! You learned to despise a thing! So, in an aspect... I completed my duty to the letter. My replacement will be taking my role within the next few hours, heroes. My death will hinder the plan none. So really.. What did you achieve? Got some gold? Were the mental scars worth it? Kyah heh heh heh heh...!" "...You're insane." Keolo accuses, one finger pointing at the Chief. "But that laugh... There were black silhouettes guarding these documents when I went to retrieve them. I couldn't identify them... But that laugh. It was you guarding those documents, wasn't it, you bastard?!" The Oculoid Chief cackles, gurgling his own inky blood as he does so. "Kyah heh heh heh! Guilty as charged! When you stole those documents from us, you forced us to launch a retrieval squad... The hired heroes complicating matters further. So we had to both break into your manor and stave off those three rats long enough to get the documents and kill each and every person who got even a glimpse of them. So, yes, Keolo, it was you who drew us to the forest this entire time. And allow me to predict your next question... How long have I been guarding those documents?" Keolo nods numbly. It seems even in death the Chief was managing to faze the archaeologist. "50 years. Longer than you've been alive, Keolo." Keolo clenches his hands into fists, his white knuckles barely visible from beneath his charcoal black gloves. A fire of determination and anger is ignited in his eyes, as he holds his hand out towards the Oculoid Claw. "With all due respect, heroes... May I borrow that claw for just one moment? I want to be the one to split this abomination in half for what he's done." "Even as little more than a faceless minion, I've managed to scar so many of you! it's wonderful, isn't it?!" It seems the Chief was getting even more delirious in his fatally wounded state.

"Just gold or Exterium for me, thanks." I grimace as the iron Knuckle shudders. "Another granddaughter bites the dust!" "Syntax, silence." I go over and remove the Iron Knuckle's helm.- 418 replies

Hopefully those last two passages were sufficently spooky.
-
The second passage is much shorter, and penned in an odd looking black plasm - Ink from an oculoid. It looks recent... It is likely that the Chief just recently wrote this.
-
"I told you already, you despicable harlot - information supression!" The oculoid Chief snaps. Karie begins to read the documents, her eyes canning the thousands of years old text. the writing was ancient and archaic, translations - courtesy of Keolo - scrawled underneath the odd glyphs meandering around the pages. The with reads aloud, a dark sense of foreboding creeping over her with every sentence. It begins with a foreword wirrten on a seperate sheet of papyrus: There also appeared to be some ink makrings on the back of the last page...
-
The Chief continues to sputter and rant as Arnold Keolo speaks. The archaelogist seems plenty shaken, his joints wobbling and his breath labored. "Arnold Keolo, at your service. I think we all have been having a fairly horrid day so far - You're the heroes Goldraum sent, correct? I was awaiting you in my manor, but those inky charlatans abducted me out of my own home and made me watcyh as they sucked this forest dry. It's revolting. I came to appreciate this place when i lived in taurost, and those bastard demons make me watch them drain it before knocking me out cold. Goldraum and I have a little bit of a deal... He pays me a sum of gold every year, and he gets to take some of the magical literature I manage to track down and get." Keolo shrugs. "I guess you'd call it a subscription. Although I personally would like to hold on to the documents, Goldraum keeps some of my expeditions afloat. So, heroes, the documents are yours. Do what you will, just make sur ethey get into Mr. Ziegfried's hands, aye? I think I saw the Chief wirting something additional on the back of them, though that shouldn't cause Goldraum to not want the damn stack of papers..."
-
And another Endgame boss bites the dust! I suspect the quest will be over and done by tomorrow, 79ers. Maybe even today if we all go on at the same time.
-
"SILENCE! Silence, all of you! You think you street urchins can defeat me?! Even as the smallest cog in the master's conspiracy, I have more then enough dark magic to crush you with a single fist! You think we're the high rankers? Even by Oculoid standards most of us are faceless goons - Even I am only 1 of over fifty Chiefs! Even if you win here, our replacements will have our roles by sun down... You will accomplish nothing! You hear me?! NOTHING!" >White Oculoid Shade A VS Oculoid Amalgam: 35-5=30 damage >White Oculoid Shade B VS Oculoid Amalgam: 35-5=30 damage >Blue Oculoid Shade VS Oculoid Amalgam: 44-5=39 damage >Red Oculoid Shade VS Oculoid Amalgam: 42-5=37 damage >Althior downs a Grand Potion (back) >Althior VS Oculoid Amalgam (back): Critical Hit Critical Hit (12x10=120+35=155+5=160x2=320-5=315 damage) >Undead Satellites destroy Blitz A/B and Reinfrocement A/B >Undead Satellite VS oculoid Amalgam: 20-5=15 damage >Undead Satellite VS oculoid Amalgam: 20-5=15 damage >Johon VS Haste Satellite A (back): Special Damage Shield: Ravage (8+25=33/2=18-5=13 damage, 3 damage Decay placed, 57 gold earned) >Johon VS oculoid Amalgam (back): Steal Critical Hit (8x3=24+25=49/2=25-5=20 damage) >Karie VS Oculoid Amalgam (back): Hit Critical Hit (11x2=22+17=39x2=78/2=39-5=34 damage) Technically the Amalgam would have 12 HP after this, but that hardly warrants another 12-24 hours for wiating for action. Thus...! The party, invigorated by the Amalgam's desperate insults, begin their final assault on the mighty demon. Althior lets an all out barrage off on the opposition. His shades and satellites swarm everything in sight, ramming and stabbing everything into submission. Althior conjures up a massive orb of light, sending it rocketting into the Amalgam's direction. The spell slams through the Amalgam, sending it hurtling backwards from the sheer force. Ink jets out from its every cut as the spell passes through him, ravaging the once powerful foe. Johon, in a flurry of barbaric strikes, manages to bring the Amalgam down to to the ground, the demon too weak to hover. karie's new whip begins to tringle, rising up form her skin and transofrming into a whip. Knowing that the battle was over. karie swings the whip overhead, and bring sit crashing down on the Amalgam. the barbed oculoid arm bisects the vitriolic beast, ink splattering off from her directions. The Amalgam practically explodes, globs of plasm scattering everywhere. horrified demonic eyes watch in shock from inside the inky giblets, fading away and dissolving instantly as the black shrapnel hit the ground. The ground is stained with the various bits of goo, the remains of the mighty demon fading away with a hiss. Only one mutilated demon remained from the Amalgam, the rest utterly destroyed by the fierce battle. The Chief sputters and wheezes, gushing ink... one mor ehit and he would surely perish. "H-how? How did you...? It isn't possible... How?! How did I lose?!" With the Chief wounded at their knees, the party knew that... The Battle is Victorious! All heroes regain their respective amount of EXP. Heroica RPG - Cruel Angel's Thesis ~ Day Six
Endgame replied to Sandy's topic in The Heroica Archive
My tattered body comes staggering out of one of the hall's many back rooms, bedraggled and ragged. Resurrection takes a lot of energy out of you, even though I felt more revitalized than ever. My clothes were tattered and covered in ash from the resurrecting flames... But even though I wasn't necessarily the picture of beauty anymore, i wasn't in a bad mood at all. I wasn't dead, for starters. "Greetings, fellows! Did you miss me?" I say trying to sound as chipper as possible. -

I play two undead heroes now! Huzzah! -
"More then a hundred humans have fallen victim to my wrath! One second they were standing, the next their souls were already mine... So what makes you different? Why can't I simply annihlate you, just like the rest? Why won't you die?!" it seems the Amalgam was legitmately baffled as to why the party was still standing. It wasn't just fiendish bantering - He really had no idea why he wasn't able to destroy the party yet.
-
"SILENCE! I'll... I'll...! Gnnnrgh!" The Chief was losing his cool, and fast.
