Ideas for New Action Themes
Ardelon replied to Perry the Platypus's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
There was a pic of an undeveloped theme of the vintage/gangster era - but after a quicke google search I could only find it on this guys flickr: I would definitely be in for such a theme. As for a Sherlock Holmes theme, like Oky said above, the things is, it doesnt sound very action-y... unless it would be done as some kind of steampunk theme (which I wouldnt mind at all). I prefer historical themes in general, so I wouldnt be too enthusiastic about contemporary themes. But a crossover theme as discussed above, however unlikely, would surely have something of interest for everyone... -
Now that is one great part, with lots of cross-theme uses. Hopefully the LEGO designers will agree...

The LEGO Movie Sets News and Discussion

Exactly what occured to me about yawning Emmet - yellow peril propaganda! (Well, he is yellow...) It is a great face to have, though. Also for wounded figs, for example. Shame its so rare.- 2,626 replies

Really neat and unbelievably accurate! Couldnt you build the stud like you built the neck piece, just smaller?

I think a lot of people forget that Gandalf Arrives introduced us to the new horse. Otherwise, though, the set really was a rather redundant when the Frodo and Gandalf polybags came out - though I would actually say it's the other way around - the set with both figs and the horse makes more sense that the limited distribution polybags. I also assume that there are (much, much) more parents and non-FOLs that buy the smallest sets exactly for the few main characters, than there are army-building AFOLs who would buy multiples of an army builder set. So I'd say TLG is making the right business move on the smallest sets. Of course, I would definitely not complain abouth army building sets instead. I do agree about the torso print redudnacy, though. I dont think it can be helped in the Goblin Town set (where else would the extra prints be allocated? - thought thats assuming the print allowance is granted per set rather than per theme?). But I wish the the designers would have made a new Orc torso instead of one of the "Oathbreaker" torsos in the Corsair ship set, and also used it for the Orcs in the Black Gate set to recoup costs (and maybe even in the upcoming BO5A set, we'll see how those guys look).

Well, I would say the centerpiece of the LotR movies, like the books, was the journey of the fellowship, especially the Hobbits, even when they split up. Maybe Tolkien would say the certerpiece were his Elvish languages. The realms, armies and battles were just a delicious backdrop. I really would like to see battlepacks, though (who wouldnt?). I was hoping TLG would release some at the end of the theme, when there would be no risk of cannibalizing sales of existing sets, but I have no reason to think this would happen.

Well, the first faction I got as a kid, and thus the one for which I have a soft spot are the Dragon Masters. Though the Wolfpack and Bull Knights seem like more interesting factions.
-
I expect TLG would like to avoid references to real-world cultures in their in-house themes - after all, LEGOland is a place with no races, nations or religions, open to everybody. Of course, the wild west theme was specific since by definition it takes place in the American (or Canadian) west, but even then, there was no contact between the "whites" and the natives (not to mention the stereotypical/idealized portrayal of the natives). And the Islanders in the pirate theme were a completely fictional culture as an amalgam of Caribbean and Oceanian influences.

LEGO Collectable Minifigure Accessories Wishlist
Ardelon replied to lifeinplastic's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Sure, but as you said, I would like something fuller, more in the shape of a sandbag. The one drawback I can think of is that I dont know if it could be made system-compatible - studs on it would look ugly, and I cant think of a n obvious way of minifigs to hold it like the sack youve shown. Yeah, Ive been hoping for a druid with a sickle too, but since druidism exists today, I suspect TLG wouldnt want to weaken its "no religion in LEGO" policy even in such a hazy case as a druid, so it wouldnt have to question in the futrure which religions are appropriate and which arent. -
Should the Orient Expedition theme come back?
Ardelon replied to larsyuipo's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I dont know about the "Oreint Expedition" coming back, that subtheme is done, but Im all for an Adventurers-type theme (especially if it would be THE Adventurers) set in Asia or anywhere else (well... maybe anywhere except ancient Egypt). Like lifeinplastic above, I also imagined the Adventurers on other adventures, such as: - under the sea investigating a shipwreck for treasure (certain CMFs, mainly the old-style diver made this scenario very MOCable; sea monsters or ghost/zombie/skeleton pirates and conquistadors are optional) - in the Arctic (the CMF eskimo and the new huskies and polar bear would fit here very well; I actually though about getting a Marvel Thor figure and making my Adventurers go seek Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor) - somewhere in the middle east, again made possible thanks to the Prince of Persia line - in Europe, investigating a ruined castle, maybe on Baron von Barrons / Sam Sinisters home turf Though as far as Asia and other "exotic" locations, I agree with the above debate that it would have to be handled more careully - having the Great White Explorers come into foreign countries and and help the hapless natives fight against their own evil rulers doesnt seem too PC for a theme nowadays. EDIT: 500th post! I shall now be known as Sir Ardelon! -
I hope so, though I wouldnt count on it. Many of the figs are historical or action / sci-fi figures, and these have a male bias. We cant very well get a female legionary or revolutionary soldier, and I think a female galactic marine is unlikely, though not undesirable. So, is there enough source material for female figs that dont slide into sterotypes like "secretary" or "cleaning lady"?

He raises several good points, but writing the whole thing off as a "flatulent mess of a film"? Not cool. And yes, his proposed changes sound pretty cringeworthy. I assume the individual movies will look somewhat better when watched as parts of a whole trilogy. In any case, I anticipate the extended edition.

Ive read too many reviews to remember where this bit of info came from. I could have been in the comments. Which means, I guess, that it could be complete speculation. Best to treat it as such. On second thoughts, PJ did want a confrontation between the Dwarves and Smaug, which indicates that this scene would have been in the films from the beginning.

Ah, you're right! Great! On another note, I'm surprised the hood isn't orange like the jacket, as Graysmith noted above. As well as looking like the hood is part of the jacket, I would assume being highly visible would be important in case of accidents...

LEGO Collectable Minifigure Accessories Wishlist
Ardelon replied to lifeinplastic's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I thought of a few more: - bayonet - funny I forgot about this one before, IMO its the most important piece still missing in the pirate theme - judges wig in black - agree with Haltiameli above on eating utensils in bley / dark bley / silver / gunmetal - burlap sack - maybe a rake or sickle or machete, but thats just me being picky - and a completely random idea – a soap bar printed on a 2x1 tile -
I see "City" as meaning "contemporary era, non action" (sure vrooming and zooming around the Arctic and running from polar bears is pretty action-y, but still real world). It looks like the Arctic guys have a new ice pick mold - it would be a shame if so, I liked the old one with serrated blade better.

Future Castle sets - put your hopes and ideas here
Ardelon replied to Alfadas's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I can agree with a lot of the stuff said in this thread, like having the factions be neutral, more civilian sets, or more continuity, without rebooting the theme every (other) year. However, I don't think that every faction needs to have a castle. If every faction had one, it would only cannibalize sales. I think TLG does a smart job by offering us only one large castle every other year. Apart from that, having other types of base for the other factions makes for a more interesting and varied wave. Even in the Fantary era, with up to four factions, each one had a different base. Only the humans had a castle, while the wizard/skellies had a tower, the dwarfs had a mine, and the trolls had a mountaimn fortress/lair. And I think the whole theme was stronger and more interesting because of this variation. In the case of Kingdoms, I felt the tower of the Dragon faction made a good job of showing how they were a more rugged, less civilized faction than the Lions. The current Dragon tower is rather feeble as a base, but again, it evokes the feel of the tower being build on top of some older ruins, thanks to the varied color scheme - a new and interesting concept, while a castle would be rather boring. If any of us feels a castle for these factions are needed, I guess this is where our MOCing skills should come into play. -
But wouldn't an Erebor set based on DoS be evidence against splitting the 2nd wave? From what I've read at theonering.net, the Erebor scene in DoS was among the last things PJ filmed, only after the split from 2 to 3 movies was announced, as padding to fill out the 2nd movie. This would mean that the designers would not have had such a set available on time to move it to a third wave. A DoS-based Erebor set would imply to me that the designers were working on it only for the past year (maybe even less), well after the announcement of a third movie and thus after the necessity to split the 2nd wave.

These arctic sets look pretty impressive. But what is that orange color? Is it "forest firemen" orange or the the slightly darker "coast guard" orange? (Im not good with official color names...)

Oh my! Possibly the most disturbing Lego build contest ever...
Ardelon replied to Faefrost's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Im going with the first option. Controversy is good. (So long as no one is getting hurt.) Weird - yes; disturbing - not really. I too am interested how TLG will react, if at all. The one negative consequence I can think of is parents linking LEGO with porn and not buying it for their kids. I find it hard to believe people would think this way, but then, there was the whole Jabbas palace incident... -
I think thats a twin-rotor helicopter...

Ah, Ive been waiting for a review of this set. Thanks Redhead 1982! Its a great parts pack with all those parts in interesting colors, and of course, the printed cookies. My one gripe is the lemons which could have been given some more love, but all the other stuff makes up for it.
