Well, if Game of Thrones can be successful, I'm sure that a series or TV-movie miniseries of the Silmarillion can be too - it's just as depressing (going against the happily-ever-after formula) and less controversial. Especially with the CGI becoming more available. I think it's just a matter of getting the rights. A new animated take on LotR or the Hobbit is also possible. Though all this is still pretty far off in the future. I guess the problem is more that these wouldn't be such blockbusters as PJ's films, so less likely to be picked up by TLG. It's a small miracle we got what we did.

So, to carry on the conversation from the previous page, assuming TLG would still have the license, would it be more profitable for TLG to make more Middle-earth waves or an in-house Castle theme? Any clues on this?

Ambassador Project - Haven Guard Flag & Torso Designs
Ardelon replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
But like Mr Phes said, the one with the horizontal stripes is too similar to the Imperial Guards. Im either for the vertical stripes (if both Merchants and HG will use the same background - inverting the colors wouldnt work here, IMO) or the Saltires (in which case one faction can have an inverted flag). Lets try something ew and different than horizontal stripes. While I like the idea of crossed muskets instead of cannons for a change, cannons just look better to me. All in all, I agree with the words of David Thomsen: (...) I think that stylistically, the diagonal cannons work better against a flag pattern that isn't also diagonal - they work better with the contrasting pattern of the horizontal or vertical stripes. Personally I think I would like the shaded cannon design against the vertical stripes (...) -
Why the Pirates theme disappeared in 1998?
Ardelon replied to Captain Fortune's topic in LEGO Pirates
An equally interesting question is not just the causes, but the consequences of the end of the classic Pirates line. Just like the Church of the Flying Spaghetti monster managed to prove a causal relationship between a drop in the number of pirates and a rise in global temperatures, I suggest a similar phenomenon can be identified in LEGO - I posit that the financial troubles of TLG in the early 2000s were caused by the sudden disappearance of LEGO Pirates a few years earlier. Luckily, TLG managed to turn its fortunes around by the end of the decade, which - suprise, surprise - was when the 2009 Pirates appeared, followed by PotC. We now see that the success of TLG hinges on LEGO Pirates being available. The narrow-minded might object that TLG was well out of the storm before the new Pirate lines appeared, but that just demonstrates the reality-warping powers of the FSM. The answers are in the scriptures, folks! -
Add me to the group saying Gondor soldiers are more important than named characters that can be made from existing parts. Though I think TLG has a greater focus on named characters, so if it came down to one last set, I'd expect named heroes instead of generic ones (though preferably both, if the set size would allow it). Rakrondewl's (didn't want to use all caps) Minas Tirith is fantastic. Though I still don't think the designers at TLG would release the whole city, rather than just the gate or a section of wall.

Would you like the Vikings theme to return?
Ardelon replied to Alfadas's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Amazing projects, ED-209. About the collumns, having just one barrel in it really makes it stand out like, well, a barrel. Have you considered including two in each column, or ditching them altogether in favor of the 2x2 round bricks? Isnt that a bit dishonest? Then the voters arent actually getting what they voted for, and the submitter is kind of leading them on with multiple possibilities - with no guarantee that what this or that voter actually wants from the set will actually be submitted (or made, which is out of the submitters hands anyway). From this POV, I suggest making each set its own suggestion, and see which idea takes off. -
Pirates and Wild West, for a start - they are so much a part of pop culture that I'm surprised they aren't at least as permanent as Castle. I'd say if TLG alternated between these two themes every year or two, the designers would have no problem keeping the themes fresh, the market unsaturated, or coming up with new takes on evergreen ideas. Wolfpack and Vikings as well - but keep the Wolfpack heraldry the same as the original, like they did with the KK1 Bull soldier. I have the same "requirement" for all Castle throwbacks - the new falcon heraldry in the Kingdoms Joust set seriously dampened my enthusiasm for it. Keep the new reddish brown and bleys instead of the old colors, sure, but don't mess with the heraldry. And Adventurers as well, just not in Egypt any more - PQ took care of that - there are plenty of other places to (re)visit. The original characters would be best, but not necessary.

I wouldnt see it as hypocritical. TLG isnt the one drilling in the arctic, much less polluting it, so they arent doing anything wrong to fit the hypocrisy label. And they did stop using packaging mad from Indonesian rainforest wood, or whatever that was about.

A really epic and action-packed MOC, with great figure posing. The roofs are indeed brilliant.

Just saw the movie today (so I put off comenting until I had seen it) - all the vignettes are fantastic! I admire your candles+candlesticks, and of course, your forced perspective stairs are brilliant! Kudos to you and your fellow collaborators.

I wont get this set, but it looks very well done (as was the original proposal). I dont mind the arm-barrels, they look metallic enough, though its a shame light bley wasnt available. I wonder whether a way to get around the color clash would be to have the surrounding parts in dark bley, and maybe make most of the arms in that color - if dark bley is availabe for the part. The green CS spacemen are the cream (or icing, if you will) on the cake, with the turtle-bot (or robo turtle?) being the cherry on top.

Hmm, if we could rely on the periodic sets being released, maybe like the Winter Village line, then it would be good to space out the purchases, keep the concept fresh, and get new useful parts as they become available. But if these sets are released ad hoc without us knowing more will come, them I would say it's better to get a whole line at once, with all available specialized parts without waiting years for them and getting our hopes up. A LEGO set in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Incredible! And there's probably a ton of stuff I didn't even catch, so I can't even appreciate it as much as I should!

Mainly because of nostalgia, the best theme in my book is Ice Planet. It was one of the last subthemes to have that feel of an isolated group of explorers in the vastness of space (as opposed to the newer themes), but the minifigs were more detailed (and thus more intersting to me) than the older ones. Can't comment on any evolving quality of the builds, as I only had the smaller sets. But the main reason would be that the Blizzard Baron was my first space set. I was too young for the 80s sets, but some other subthemes I appreciate are Blacktron 2 (more than Blacktron 1, thanks to nostalgia), M:Tron and Exploriens (yes, really - exactly because of the isolated explorer vibe). Anything beyond Insectiods didn't really catch my interest.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 12 Rumours and Discussion
Ardelon replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
So, what do you guys think about the color of space miner's helmet and raygun-drill? Will it be orange, like they appear to be on legojapan's pic on the first page, or the copper color seen on the image CM4S posted a month back?: (I assume it's the metallic copper color, it might also be dark orange or pearl gold, I'm not sure how well the colors translate from the real world to the digital one). I hope it's copper, but I guess offical images trump game screencaps - I'm pretty sure the swashbuckler will have a gold rapier instead of a bley one as seen in another of CM4S's screencaps (on page 6, btw). Thoughts?- 1,109 replies

But dark orange would make for a drab and poorly visible flag, while regular orange was dropped. I suggest the color should be whatever color we decide for the facings. As for the pattern, the Bluecoat flag was a whte cross on blue, the Redcoats had horizontal stripes, so for our faction I suggest something new, like vertical stripes or an saltire (X-shaped cross). Then for the charge, we could have the initals "H G" on the flag, like the "VOC" logo on the Duch East India Company flag, if we're going for a Dutch-inspired faction. Or else we could use the traditional crossed cannons. Just brainstorming. -
LEGO vehicles run on Hand of God. My suspicion is that Greenpeace in in the pay of Lord Business, who wants to eliminate Shell and solidify his Octan monopoly. A storm in a chamber pot, as we say in my country.

I actually didn't mean anything, since I had no idea such a color existed . But thanks, that's just what I wanted to know.

Bit late, but I'll add my voice to the party - it's a great MOC that really shows a sense of dynamism with the posing and the water. I like the foam around the pillars - clever little detail. As for the characteristics, I would have ventured a guess at the one with the Union troops advancing and the Confederates defending, and suspected the cross had some meaning, but that's about it. Maybe as another characteristic I would have suggested something about the ineptitude of the Union commander sending his troops into a bottleneck on the bridge, right into the rifle fire of the rebels - I read about the poor leadership skills of many Northern commanders compared to their Southern counterparts...

Since I don't own any fleshie figs, I'd like to ask, is the brown color the standard reddish brown, or some special "fleshie" brown?

Contrary to what I said earlier, after some thinking, if TLM really draws in a bunch of nostalgic new AFOLs, this might be just the right time to consider a CS revival/reboot. After all, there's no reason why TLG can't produce a blue/bley/trans-yellow faction, with the CS logo, without any connection to the 1980s. Although probably with an alien adversary, which might kill the CS ethos ...

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 12 Rumours and Discussion
Ardelon replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm a bit disappointed by how bland the Prospector looks (as well as the comical hat, and only a pick as an accessory - maybe he will have another accessory as well?). I was expecting a western gold miner to pop up as a CMF, but I'm not too impressed. Maybe WhiteFang's review will reveal some hidden charm. But I was also hoping for a flamboyant pirate, and we got a great version of that in the swashbuckler, so my expectations were pretty high. The Spooky Girl looks interesting and well executed, I had no idea what to expect. Could she have a GitD head? The pig-suit guy is not my cup of tea, only the accessory would have sold me on this one, like the Bumblebee Girl's honey pot. The apple won't cut it. Not as promising as the first batch of pics.- 1,109 replies

That was TLG getting rid of old figs and parts, not introducing new/upcoming ones.

Nice designs, Yooha. The one on the left looks rather plain, it seems a secondary contrasting color is needed and gold won't do the trick. The one on the right looks best, though those are dark red facings, are they not? Red would seem a better choice, since dark red isn't distinct enough. Green facings might also work, but then, they might also not be distinctive enough. And might I suggest the cavalier/musketeer hat as headgear?
