Custom sails (more realistic colors)?
Admiral Bejaune replied to Southwest Chief's topic in LEGO Pirates
The sails did smell like coffee at first. But the next step in the process eliminates that smell. I have not explained everything in detail. So I will start from step one. 1. Buy thin fabric that is not transparent. I get mine at Walmart in the textile section. I buy about 6ft of fabric. 2. I use instant coffee and tea. Usually an entire box of both (depends on how dark you want them. ) pour the coffee and tea into a bucket and cram the fabric into it. Leave for 3 days but check on it to make sure it's all saturated in liquid . 3. Air dry in the sun. It will give it a more weathered look. 4. Buy wallpaper glue and paint both sides (this might take two days if you let one side dry before you paint the other) the glue makes the fabric stiff and canvas like, and it keeps it from fraying while cutting it. 5. When dry measure out your sails and cut them. For the lines I use a pencil and a ruler. I sew my sails on to the yard arms with thread and needle. That's it! Good luck with it. You can message me via pm if you have any questions. -
Custom sails (more realistic colors)?
Admiral Bejaune replied to Southwest Chief's topic in LEGO Pirates
I have had great success with creating custom sails. The trick is to use coffee and tea to get the darker color. I let my sails soak for 3 days in about 8 cups worth of both coffee and tea. The sails on the uss president are almost perfect color. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=422198 -
To be up front with you, I would scrap what you have and follow these steps in building a ship. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=30623 In my opinion It is the best way to build a ship on prefab hulls. Best of luck. -B

It's a very well built ship. One thing though is that the ship in the book was a two masted topsail schooner and not a 3 masted full rigged ship. But other than that you have built a nice moc.

[MOC] USS Poseidon - Minifig Scale First Rate Ship of the Line
Admiral Bejaune replied to shiplover's topic in Pirate MOCs
I have been following this build for some time now. Though the gun count is way too much, I feel that this ship would be a representation of how a ship of the line would have looked if steam powered ironclads had not been invented. This build reminds me of the Uss Pennsylvania, and a British ship that was not built, but designed Hms Duke Of Kent. -
This is a great looking ship. Classic colors are always a good choice. The only thing I would Change is the stern. It is one deck too low. The lower gundeck should not have a stern gallery, but the stern gallery should start on the upper gundeck, which would add a poop deck to the stern of the ship. I hope that makes sense.

This is an absolute beauty.. The sails are great. It seems you have done more than drawn pencil lines on them, some of the best I have seen! I like that you took a gamble and took the entire build off of pre fab hulls. It gives the entire ship a sleek, low in the draft look. I would like to see a tutorial on how you cut the side gallery, and stern windows. It is frowned upon in some eyes but I find it useful, because of limitation of window types. The way you have transitioned the side galleries to the stern is smooth and flows nicely. And the amount of rigging is great! The only gripe I have is the blue seats in the row boats.... make them brown! Wonderful ship, and well done. Admiral B

New pirates theme- what do you want?
Admiral Bejaune replied to HomerJSimpson's topic in LEGO Pirates
Im with you on the shipwreck idea. I built a moc a while back that is exactly how you described yours. It has since been demolished for other builds. There is a waterpark in Florida that I went to as a child and used for inspiration. . -

The best advice I can give you is to check out captain green hair's build a frigate tutorial. It has everything you need to know about building a great ship moc.

This is a great frigate. You cant go wrong with black and white. The lines are great, and the only thing I can see that needs changing are the main yardarms. They are too small. The need to be longer. Other than that its a great build. -B

I am not sure if the illusion scale can be improved any more than this. But Im sure you will find a way to improve it beyond what you have done. You really have mastered this style of lego building, and it has inspired me to rebuild parts of my own mocs to improve them and add more detail. The lines on your ships are spot on and the sails are perfect. -B

English warship "Revenge" from 1577 in minifigscale 1:50
Admiral Bejaune replied to maydayartist's topic in Pirate MOCs
Well there is not much to say that hasnt been said already. When I first looked at your post I thought I was looking at a wooden ship model that you used for inspiration. After realizing that it was lego I was in shock. This is a remarkable achievement in the lego world. Like people above have said, You raised the bar to the top on this one. I am still scratching my head while studying the wip photos, and I havent quite figured out the technique. I hope some of the other great builders will catch on to it, and it will spread like wild fire. The full rigging is great, the details are perfect. Truely the best ship moc ever built. Well done. -B -
Wow you have been sitting on this moc for a while. Since 2010. I found it here on brickshelf.com http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=425319. Interesting design. -B

I remember seeing this years ago on this website. http://www.bigbenbri...tion/index.html. And it appears to have been posted some time ago here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=8935&st=0#entry146641. -B

Hey everyone, I have designed this simple carronade that would work well on minifig illusion scale ships. It is very simple but IMO very effective on such a limited scale that is the illusion scale. Please feel free to use it, improve it, or to not use it at all. Comments are welcome, and I am curious to see if and how the communiy could improve it. Admiral B.

Great work on this one. You and Rick are great team builders. The rigging is nice and clean and the dark red and pearl gold go together perfectly. Oh and wait do I see the stern has glu..... oh wait... mmm... mabe not? Great ship mate. I hope too to be back in the shipyards again soon. -Bejaune

This ship is definatly a breath of fresh air... The shape of this ship is spot on and I love the full hull. The angle of the mast are acurate, and the rigging looks clean and neat. The sails could use some work, but they are the right size and shape.. I would like to see them a bit darker if you are going for the original era ship. However if you are going for the modern rendition of the ship I would stick with the bright white sails. The edges of your sails could be cleaned up a bit like some have said. I would say that this ship has sparked a bit of motivation to start building more. So I thank you for that. -Bejaune

Thanks for the praise. I used a headlight type brick to use the single pane windows. A stud fits perfectly in the lactice windows.
