Benedict Thorpe had thought it might be hard to start a produce farm in Wullham, but the rich soils on the island of Panarium meant everything he planted thrived with only basic tending. He had planted extra carrots, onions, melons, squash, and wheat thinking not all of it would make it, but the vegetables seemingly doubled in number during the growing season. The result was he had more produce than he knew what to do with! As Thorpe stood pondering his good fortune, Corporal Newbury returned his dairy cow Elise who had wandered off down the track. Without many trees to be found on the island, the farmer used driftwood to build his garden fences. After Elise the cow was re-secured in her barn, the croaking of the frogs at the nearby pond helped Thorpe doze off into a nice nap. Licensed by Wullham as a medium vegetable plantation OoC: Wanted to try a SNOT base with darker soil colors, went with reddish-brown and dark orange, which are darker than what we commonly see in pirate builds. Also wanted to begin to establish a whitewashed architectural style for Wullham that incorporates little bits of the lavender color. I'm imagining fancier buildings will have slate roofs and more ornamental features.

So many torsos! Haha. Great lively colors and textures all around. Great head choices - everyone seems to have a distinct personality. I love all of the SNOT and backwards pieces -

That's a real mix of minifigs! Love the ruined dock and the various scattered pieces do a good job making it seem like it's a place that is in the process of being rebuilt. Good use of clear pieces near the rocks to represent lapping water. The lime green mixed in with the regular and bright green helps give the ground a tropical feel. Good choice making the food stand diagonal to the studs! Nice work. @CapOnBOBS - Some pretty thorough dock destruction by the noble redcoats. The trick is to leave just enough of it left that it makes construction of a new one hard. -

Medium Lavender is on top and regular Lavender is on the bottom, so I'm pretty sure it is regular Lavender in the build.

[COR - FB] Conducting a Survey of Panarium
evancelt replied to evancelt's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks guys! I discussed with Ayrlego whether or not to make a standard BOBS color map of Panarium or a stylized one like this. After checking out the parchment-colored one for Cascadia, I ended up going with a style similar to that in order to fit it into the narrative of some vignette builds! In Illustrator, I started by zooming into the map Ayrlego had created: I did a quick-ish vector Pen tool trace of the island shape and then scaled it up to fill the artboard. I scaled the MILES scale at the same time to keep the scale the same. Next I grabbed some Pirate map elements from free vector websites (hills, mountains, compass rose) and built out the final map on a parchment background. Then I made two versions of it for land and sea where I deleted elements that were present in the final version. On the land map I simplified the island perimeter trace to have fewer anchors / make it a little more basic and also moved the islands out of place a little to simulate how someone on land would misjudge distances. Could be fun to add landmark builds on Panarium to it to show how they all fit together. @Khorne & @CapOnBOBS - Happy to share the Illustrator file / font if you want to base any other local maps on it. -
Yay rocks! Sounds like time for a quarry. I'm pretty sure that is normal Lavender rather than Medium Lavender, though you have me second guessing myself now and the poor lighting on this build doesn't help! I was rushing to build this and the three small builds for the surveying post all in 1.5 hours I had available last night - meant cutting corners on lighting/editing! I definitely used regular Lavender on small specks in the intro build.

Captain Brickleton wanted to know more about the island of Panarium. In the week following their arrival at the future site of Wullham, he sent expeditions out by land and sea to survey the island. Second Lieutenant Berthing of the 18th Hussars set out with another trooper and an Onondaga settler who had accompanied them from Elizabethville. They rode across the island many times identifying key features Most of the island was covered in grassy hills. They noted a total of ten mountains on the island and highlands on the northern half of the island. A medium-sized river flowed from the mountains of the southwest on to the sea. They spotted a few smaller islands offshore. Lieutenant Freeman, a Royal Navy Intelligence officer, circumnavigated the island by rowboat. Accompanied by a soldier of the 26th Foot, they spent a week camping on beaches and sounding the depths to establish the extent of the shallows. They made depth soundings around the island and took a detailed account of all of the inlets and shore curvature. They also were able to make out ten distinct mountains as they made their way around the island by sea. Once back at camp in Wullham, Lieutenant Freeman erected a table on a hill overlooking the sea. He had become close friends with his travel companion from the 26th Foot while conducting the survey. His friend and a second soldier played melancholy background music while Freeman combined the interior details the Hussars had gathered with his more detailed sea records. A detailed map of Panarium OOC: The accordion idea is from the BirdBase build by @Fraunces. Got some new CMF Series 21 minifigs in the mail yesterday and wanted to include the fiddle from violin boy in the third vignette.

On the second day after their arrival on Panarium, a lightning storm hit and the settlers had to seek shelter. With no buildings erected yet, they were quite exposed in their camp. After seeking shelter next to a nearby rock outcrop, two pioneers began to wonder about what riches lay embedded in those rocks. As the storm broke, the two returned with pickaxes and began breaking off chunks of rock. Prospecting build in Wullham. OOC: What do we have in these rocks?

Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
evancelt replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Agreed, seems like update-ability would be the issue. The most straightforward open source interactive maps I've worked with before use custom flat map tile layers to provide the map base images. They have different X/Y tile image sets for different zoom Z levels. An example of this is: https://openlayers.org/en/latest/examples/xyz.html But that gets back to the issue of making it easy to update... would need some sort of tool like Google Earth KMZ editor to do that for a whole group of editors I'll keep thinking about if that might be feasible. Thanks - That helps me picture it! -

Question for you all... where are the Prio Seas and New Haven seas in relationship to the Old World countries on the maps page? Just farther and farther east? Would be cool to see a map that joined all of the new discovery maps together... or an interactive map Thanks! -

Good call - I think a SNOT sand wall would have been ideal there! Like you said, it would have added some texture and allowed for easy sloping by adding additional plates- 16 replies

evancelt replied to evancelt's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks @blackdeathgr! Happy to be building for BOBS! With the sand wall, I was going for this effect that I saw quite often as a kid visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the USA. The ocean eats away the sand until there is grass above to provide some cohesiveness to hold it together. Ends up making a tiered beach with a flat lower beach and then a high water mark cliff. With the stone wall, I was going for these super bumpy Irish stone walls that are near the beach: It may be that this horse farm beach is better suited to the Wullham style (see new beach landing scene) as the stone wall without vegetation could be a sign of high winds / few trees. UPDATE: I just noticed in the close up shot that my red-stripey pirate has a cracked arm!- 16 replies

Name: Wullham (pronounced Wool-um) Ownership: The Crown of Corrington Location: Panarium, New Haven Sea Map: Mayor: Major Sir Jonathan Brickleton (@evancelt) Trade Value: See account summary Town Bank: See account summary Town Income per turn/Town Expenses per turn: TBD Who can own property in Wullham: Anyone Who can freebuild in Wullham: Anyone Description: Wullham is a settlement located on the small but strategically important island of Panarium. Panarium is the most northerly of the New Haven Sea islands at this longitude. The island is exposed to harsh northerly winds that have left most of the island devoid of trees. Instead, the hilly landscape is dominated by lush grassland and low shrubs. The winds bring plenty of rain but also lower the temperature significantly compared to the more tropical climate of neighboring islands. Rocky outcrops dot the grassy hillsides and add pops of color with bright lichen growth. A unique lavender-colored mineral appears in the lighter grey rocks found nearby. The small sheltered valleys that surround the coastal location chosen for the settlement are quite fertile and are ideal for grain crops. Sheep thrive in the hilly grasslands. After a quite painless voyage from Elizabethville, Captain Jonathan Brickleton arrives on the newly named island Panarium (Island 4 in the New Haven Sea) to establish a new settlement for the Crown of Corrington. Claimed by Corrington, Panarium is the most northerly of the New Haven Sea islands at this longitude. Along with his mixed company of 26th Foot and 18th Hussars, Brickleton is joined by a few dozen adventurous pioneers from Elizabethville who will help found the new settlement, which he names Wullham. Upon first inspection, the small sheltered valleys that surround the coastal location he has chosen for the new settlement appear to be quite fertile and will likely be ideal for grain crops. The few sheep they have brought with them appear to enjoy the terrain and Brickleton expects them to thrive. Rather than use the few trees on the island for firewood, Brickleton sends a small group out to cut some peat for their fires. They then begin setting up a makeshift camp at what will become the settlement of Wullham.

The field gun design is one I saw credited to @Ayrlego on reddit. Is it indeed your design? It's a fun one. I have a whole bag of black telescopes but couldn't find it after 10 minutes of looking. Settled on dark brown as a stand in.- 2 replies

With his seventeen-point readiness plan enacted in Elizabethville and many new trained members swelling the ranks of the settlement militia, Captain Brickleton and his mixed company of 26th Foot and 18th Hussars depart Fort di Legno for their next adventure. Second Lieutenant Bolton gathers militiamen in front of the fort to see Captain Brickleton off. OOC: Wanted to break out my red legs and log bricks again before a change in scenery, and to move Brickleton's story along!

Roughly a decade later... My wife got me some hull pieces from lego.com recently for Christmas and they include three of the 64645 hull. I'm planning to put one in back like the Imperial Flagship, but was presented with the problem of how to connect the front two together. I experimented with @Captain Blockbeard's approach of using jumper plates and I think it will work! As he said, they appear to be offset by 1/2 1x1 brick, so I think a combination of jumper plates and tiles (no studs) should work Putting jumper plates in these two locations seems to make a pretty strong connection and not protrude from the hull very much at all. I think the next step would be finding a cool usage of tiles / clips and hose to cover the gap produced. And... there is going to be a 1/3 brick (plate thickness) height addition throughout the ship.

Definitely! It's crazy how some of the rarer vintage pirate pieces (admiral/governor torsos, head, hat, imperial flags, red octagon web clip, blue lantern piece, etc) have exploded in price during COVID lockdowns. I think a lot of 30-somethings are nostalgic for the vintage sets and now have time and income to spend on the pieces (certainly the case for me now)!
