LEGO Star Wars 2022 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!
Mandalorianknight replied to MKJoshA's topic in LEGO Star Wars
It's possible, again especially since SW has a higher budget. If I remember correctly most of the ninjago ones have at most 1 new figure or new "wave figures" that are new, but released in other sets in that wave. So it'd be like if one of the accesory pack figures was a snow scout. I'll do option C then, just have to attach some turn signals onto the set! Good idea! -

Thank you for the analysis. Gunship and AT-AT figure counts seem to line up with this, right? Watch the razor crest mando be the muddy variant or something. This really is a pathetic wave. Not so much in terms of set choice (I personally really like the battle pack and hoth at-st ideas at least), but in terms of how LITTLE there is. I know we're getting a few in march too, but seriously, look at these compared to even 2020. Yeah they could be anything from 4 b1 battle droids with some random garbage side build to Jedi Bob, Rebel friend, Captain Howzer, and Doogie Howzer with a side build of a minikit and accurately sized AT-RT. Realistically they tend to have 1 new fig each. SW has a greater budget than most of the other themes (I think HP might have a comparable one), so it could be more. Question to the forum: What do I do so I can buy the AT-AT? A: Do some mafia-style "persuasion" to get someone to buy the death star and some other stuff I'm selling on bricklink. B: Take out a government loan and go into crippling debt. C: Sell my car, then strap a power functions motor onto the AT-AT to use as transport. -

I said in the post you qouted that occasionally a UCS version of something will release before the end of a system model of the same thing's lifespan. My point it it's rarely, if ever, happened where a system version of a set comes out when the UCS version is already on shelves. -

Yeah, this is about as premium as a star wars lego set can be. Unfortunately for my wallet, the price matches that. It looks fine. Nothing special, but it doesn't need to be, it's a generic trooper. Is the gunship a "debacle" now? I thought it was a rather well-designed set, and having mixed up packaging or figures not everyone wanted wouldn't make a huge impact on it since they aren't the point of the set. There are two major reasons I can see that the gunship didn't have as big a figure count as the AT-AT: 1. The AT-AT is minifig scale. The gunship is larger than figure scale. Figure scale sets, especially ones with interiors meant for figures, tend to have more minifigs than the ones at other scales. (which was my rational for wanting the UCS nebbie, as I wanted the next gunship to be fig scale. A UCS gunship would mean a longer wait for another system one, wheras we'd never get a minifigure scale neb-b.) 2. Like you said, there's only a few new prints here, because most of these figures were produced just a year ago. A new pilot would require a new mold, and pretty much all related characters would as well, and since the gunship was experimental it makes sense that they didn't want to increase the risk by sinking new molds and even more new prints into the set. -

I doubt it, I don't think enough time passed for them to change it on the spot like that, or that it was a big enough deal for them to do a rush job and get it out like that. Plus, most of the fans complaining that the gunship didn't have a ton of clones with it aren't the same people who'd be buying the AT-AT regardless of fig count. This set looks incredible, I'm very happy with it. I had absolutely no intentions of getting it but...damn. Maybe if my death star sells. This is definately a contender for best UCS set, even the falcon didn't have an interior as good as this. -

Yeah, it'd be almost like comparing the gunship to mos eisley. I'm guessing luke and or the AT-AT pilots will have arm printing, but the overall point still stands I think. Plus, it's a minifig scale set, unlike the gunship. -

The fact that Plo never leaked is one of my favorite things about SW. They put all that effort into the fake out and then everyone BUT plo leaked. BoBf seems to have the same mando s2 issue where everyone leaked. -

I'm guessing this is a mando s2 situation where almost all footage is from the first couple episodes, but at the very least this is the suit they'll be marketing most. Wait, were people saying it was a fake out? Why would they try to hide the species of a new character? -

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but this is one of the sets we can almost 100% confirm ISN'T coming, because people voted a UCS version in and we rarely get UCS and normal versions of the same set within eachother's lifespans. (I think once or twice a UCS model has been released while a system set of the same thing wasn't quite out of stock yet, but I can't think of anytime a UCS set has released and had a system version of it within a year.) Personally I'm pretty happy with the dagobah diorama, but I wouldn't mind a new black one or AT-TE. Both have gotten a tad expensive on the secondary market and I don't have them yet. Don't really care what figures come in either of them, though I don't have a padme yet so I suppose it'd be nice to see her in the AT-TE, maybe the one with the white cape? -

I might not have articulated this right but I meant that the mudhorn should be brick-built, as the fantastic beasts and black panther ones were. The microfighters seem to be the first thing they dropped from covid and the supply issues, which is fine to me, though you're right that it's a shame we don't have more of these brick-built creatures. A wheel bike chase two pack would fit the mold perfectly. They get rid of molds, if I remember correctly. I hope they don't just straight up destroy them, but designers have spoken in the past about molds being discontinued. There've also been examples of molds being "reborn", but it's a new mold even if the part seems identical (vorox armor and tuhrahk staffs from bionicle come to mind) -

I wonder if the molds were more lego-like, if I would like them better. Like in the way that minifigures aren't attempting to look just like humans, if a rancor was molded but made more lego-like in the part molding, that might look better to me at least. Of course, then we again run into the issue that it's easier to make a lego-looking rancor out of bricks than to custom mold a realistic one. Baby rancor would be small enough to require a new mold, although only appearing in a single episode of an animated show, it'd be unlikely to get a set given how animated series hesitent they are now. A mudhorn is more likely but would be brick-built, if you look at that one fantastic beasts figure and the black panther one they can do rhinoceroses pretty well brick-built. -

I'm actually of the opposite opinion here, and here's why. Molded creatures just feel un-lego-like to me. Yes, lego officially makes them and they've been in sets since the 90s, but still, something about the giant, specialized chunks of plastic just rubs me the wrong way. It's one of the reasons I love the bantha and dewback microfighters, they show that you can make recognizable animals with actual bricks. I think bigfigs are a different situation, as they're meant to be just humans at 1.5x or so scale, but in general I dislike the giant molded creatures. I get that back in the 90s it was either going to be a collection of cubes or a specialized mold, but something as big as a rancor should look great brick-built with all the parts they have now. That said, though I personally really do prefer the brick-built to molded animals, it doesn't bother me too much as it's easier to make your own brick-built version of a molded animal than specialty mold a version of a brick-built animal. (plus the cost of the molded animals on secondary markets are usually high enough to offset the cost of buying parts to make brick-built versions) how dARE YOU SIR! 10071 is a NATIONAL TREASURE and you will not deny that it is the GREATEST SET EVER DESIGNED. Jokes aside I actually do like 40133. "obi-wan relives his PTSD and starts seeing double of luke" adventure pack -

I'm working my way down the list! loved the bad batch, these are all great sets. A v-wing with a TK trooper and Omega begs to be produced by lego. A cheap set with a main character, somewhat recognizable vehicle, and new trooper variant. Regarding my moc list: Thanks to everyone who made a suggestion! I've so far got some of the smaller sets done, but I wanted to let you guys know it might be a few months before the full list is complete and posted. Early action deadlines for most colleges are Nov 1, and since I'm not exactly the head of the banking clan I need to focus on getting that merit aid bread and some good essays to slip ESB qoutes into (I did put a ROTS qoute in one a few months ago, the "become the very thing you swore to destroy). After Nov 1 I'll be going full speed ahead on the mocs, with the only obstacle being the possibility of finals (though only one of my classes is putting up a fight this year, and I think I can wrangle myself into a position where I don't have to ace the final to retain an A). TLDR: List might not be done until Christmas. That said, I do have a couple sets to add to the list! The Ninth Jedi ($39.99): Kara's speeder, the jedi hunter speeder, the droid mech, and a bit of temple. Comes with Kara, Ethan, the margrave, an acolyte, and a jedi hunter. The other one I'm keeping secret until I finish. -

I agree with the last statement, but yeah if it's just under 100k for the average mold that's not exactly cheap. The CMFS are made out of a slightly different plastic than the standard brick, which I assume has some impact on the cost of molds used, same with the knockoffs. And again with jdubb's reminder that it's not just the monetary cost of the mold itself, the fact that the knockoffs just make low-quality versions of existing lego parts probably also has something to do with it. -

I can see both of those, what with the rubber inserts for the die and the fact that the chain is 3 seperate molds made together. My overall point is that LSW has a larger budget than a good number of the accessory pack themes (superheroes for sure, I'm not sure about harry potter and ninjago but I'd guess they're roughly on par with it), so it's possible that they won't have the same print limitations. -

Dice? as others have said, lego's qouted it as well over 100k a few years ago, and while it's possible it's gone down somewhat, just looking at other themes shows that it most likely hasn't. Not to beat a dead horse, but again bringing up the superheroes theme, if new molds were cheap enough to be producing them (as @jdubbs said, cost not necessarily just meaning monetary cost), they'd be doing more. I never thought about it that way, that's a good point. -

No, it has a larger budget. Take a look in the marvel and DC threads for instance, the marvel sets are doing a bit better the past year or so but in general they can't afford leg printing, much less the variety of new molds. Speaking of new molds, they're seriously expensive, it's the same machine overall, sure, but it's hundreds of thousands of dollars to create a single mold, that's gonna take a chunk out of the budget. -

I talked about this a bit, but lego star wars has a different budget than most other themes, which could possibly impact those sets. That said, I think whether it'll be more like a battle pack or the conventional figure pack is going to depend on whether or not they're intended as replacement battle packs or the standard accessory packs. -

A lot of younger kids, not necessarily avid younger lego star wars fans but younger kids who like playing with lego star wars, don't army build because they can only hold a couple troopers in each hand, and it's better to imagine an army of troopers than a ton of named characters. When have they done this in the past decade? 2014? The start of battle packs, when the clones were drastically different colors, not just different markings but fully different colors, and had different head molds, completely different builds, and yet still didn't sell all too well overall? The other themes aren't exactly a perfect comparison to star wars, and even then most of those are named characters. The marvel pack had black widow, the version only available in the expensive helicarrier, and falcon, an exclusive figure, alongside those two aim agents. The Monkie kid pack has substantially different outfits for named characters. -

As is well known in other themes like marvel and DC, even changing the print is a cost to them, and while SW has a higher budget than those themes, that's a minimum of 3 new prints per set, more if they have any sort of specialized clone or printed parts on the AT-RT (I don't think minifigure packs come with stickers, but I could be mistaken). Plus, if the variation is that small, those sets aren't going to sell well as soon as the second one hits shelves. Imagine, if you will, that in january 2021 a 212th pack released, same as the 501st one but in orange. It's not going to sell as well. Sure, diehard fans will army-build both, and people like me who just prefer the 212th will buy a couple, but most people who army-built the 501st just 6 months ago aren't going to do the same immediately after with another clone legion, at least not to the same extent. Furthermore, most of the buyers, children, might not buy any copies at all, seeing as they have the blue version already. A lot of parents won't want to get a recolor of a set their kid already has, too. Then in August 2021, a coruscant guard pack releases, and sales continue to lower. Lego already had this issue with their first order battle packs, and those had not only more variety but were released further apart. They aren't going to make that mistake again. -

1. It's a new type of set. I don't know why you're doing these semantics games, but yes, it's a new thing for lego to make popular sets at 1/2 the price. 2-4. So your problem isn't that they "aren't doing anything new" like you keep saying, it's that the new things aren't ones that you want. Also, I've made comments before that are just lists of things I dislike that lego has done. This particular issue is not one of them. See, now you've changed it from lego isn't doing anything new to "lego isn't doing any new non-ot things". Which is sort of true? Lego tests new things with their better-selling OT sets, while continuing to pump out sets based on newer media in the summer waves, such as the august 2021 wave consisting almost entirely of clone wars and mando. I didn't respond regarding the CMF because it would be something new that they haven't done yet. I'm not sure why you think I don't want one. First it was covid impact, now this year it's the massive global supply issues.
