Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
CopperTablet replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I don't think you can use this as an indicator of Lego sales. I think it just means that the Brickset site has declined in popularity after 2014, consistent with Reddit/Discord eating into traditional web forums. All of the D2Cs show a drop from 2014 to 2017, not just modular. 2013 UCS Ewok Village: 9155 own it, 6425 want it 2014 UCS Sandcrawler: 7606 own it, 6187 want it 2017 UCS Falcon: 4904 own it, 4409 want it 2014 10242 Mini Cooper: 11272 own it, 3108 want it 2017 10258 London Bus: 3658 own it, 2335 want it 2014 Winter Village Market: 8605 own it, 3708 want it 2017 Winter Village Station: 5128 own it, 1872 want it Lego sales increased each year from 2003 to 2016 and dropped 8% from 2016 to 2017: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/mar/06/lego-sales-fall-growth-job-cuts An 8% drop in sales could not translate to a 50-66% drop in buyers, especially since Brickset is not measuring sets sold, but # of people who own a set. Brickset is just leaking users at an alarming pace. Because of this, it is unknown whether Pet Shop is the most popular Modular: Jamie Berard said in an interview a few weeks ago that Fire Brigade was where most people became familiar with the Modular series. -
That seems like a good idea: modding it to make it (somewhat) minifigure scale. The nanofigures are about 1/3 as tall as a minifig and 1/2 as wide, right?

Fantastic interview. The flag in 10197 was always puzzling: it looks like the original flag of the Confederate States of America with the three two-stud tall red and white stripes. You would think an American flag in that scale would have six alternating red and white stripes one stud thick instead. There is a modified 10197 appearing in The Lego Movie and the flag has been modified to be pale blue with a white stripe in the center like the flag of Chicago. A four-floored building is at least 33% more expensive than a three-story building and would be a bit taller than the others. I think it could work, however. Modular is partially about subverting expectations and overcoming design challenges using the elements Lego gives you. The closest thing we have to a four-story building is the Town Hall with its clock tower, and that one was designed by Astrid instead of Jamie, I think.

Where to get started with Advanced building?
CopperTablet replied to klsalejandro's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I would build some Modulars and watch some tutorials from people like Derfel Cadarn, he has some great tutorials on his Flickr for advanced techniques -
Do modern white bricks still turn yellow?
CopperTablet replied to ProducePrincess's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Once the bricks undergo yellowing, just list them on Bricklink as "Tan" and use the sale profits to buy some new white ones. -
It's a great design, but the real thrill of Lego for me is building and implementing challenging ideas such as a minifigure-scale Hogwarts. The problem with nanofigures is that they lack detail. Objectively, they're not very good toys: they're completely unposeable, uncustomizable, and the painted details are limited and sparse. Great architecture, though, it's incredibly beautiful.

I'd love to see you do some more suburban sprawl like this, and connect it to the city center with a highway. In America, I would envision something like a Chik-Fil-A or Target being adjacent to a place like this.

[MOC] The (in)famous Kowloon Walled City as a modular building
CopperTablet replied to Graupensuppe's topic in LEGO Town
Fantastic work! I could see something like this, in a somewhat modified form, being the Ninjago big set for 2019. Right now, it's very realistic, and while that's great, if Lego wanted to sell it, they'd need to add some kid appeal. How would you adjust it to interface with the Ninjago city and docks? Is anyone building this in brick? -
Looks fantastic. I have decided to try to implement a splash of old light grey in the structure to try to capture Xon67's distinctive look of three tones of grey. I will also be using white 41533 on the building. The interior will have an elevator, although it will be different from the one in the original Town Hall and will be facing the door to Emmet's kitchen. I decided that the stairwell was going to take up way too much space. The interior will have to be condensed a bit to fit the structure of the building, but it will be a faithful homage. Unfortunately, while the original appears to be in some shade of aqua, there doesn't seem to be a ready supply of bricks in this color in the US at the moment. It is likely that I will have to use a different blue instead. Update: This SDCC set implies that the Lego Movie 2 will take place in an area called "Apocalypseburg". Will it be fo time in Bricksburg? https://brickset.com/article/37257/sdcc-exclusive-apocalypseburg-unikitty!

How do you guys envision the interior of the apartment looking, specifically, how do minifigures go up and down floors? The 50-stud wide interior that Xon67 built is not rectangular like the building (and it's physically wider, as was pointed out) I understand that the goal is to recreate the film scenes, but I would like it if my building was more than just an empty "prop". Do you feel there is a stairwell in the back area with three windows? How many studs wide should it be? I don't think there are any references from the film.

A massive and beautiful build, although the aesthetic (American-inspired suburban big box sprawl) is very different from most Lego sets like the modulars. As a result, it could be challenging to place in a display.

The Streamline Modern aesthetic of the Downtown Diner frequently uses colors that were neglected in previous architectural styles such as turquoise and pink.

Hey, Xon67, NDLG80, these recreations are really amazing. I too was looking to build some of the structures in brick. I've noticed that there seems to be three shades of gray in Emmet's apartment: light bluish grey, dark bluish grey, and a third color. Most of the elements are not available in the third shade of grey, however, as far as I can tell. In LDD, you're not constrained to using the actual production colors, but how would you simplify this to light bluish grey and dark bluish grey? The one element that we are really lacking is 41533. In reality, this element is only available in red, white, and black, but none of these colors really look right for an AC unit. Also note that the apartment has a central air unit at the top of the building adjacent to the fire escape, but the residents are still using window AC units. This is probably authentic to the movie.
