[TC20] 8462 Redux
Cardboy replied to Cardboy's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I own the original so was going to use those as this if for the completion. However, normally i try to build these with parts that a current or highly available but I don't think there is anything close the only other silver rims I can think of are the 8448 super street but there just as old. -
[TC20] 8462 Redux

Think I'm also missing some of the blue lift arms myself so may have to go shopping -
Its not a frame if you look at the brick link image it is smooth around the sides and that pattern can only be seen on the top and as its flush with the orange panel it cant be a frame. https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=64179&name=Technic, Liftarm, Modified Frame Thick 5 x 7 Open Center&category=[Technic, Liftarm]#T=C https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=39794&name=Technic, Liftarm, Modified Frame Thick 7 x 11 Open Center&category=[Technic, Liftarm]#T=C

[TC20] 8462 Redux

So have been building the structure and crane trying to recreate the style using Technic over bricks Think the turquoise parts will have to remain as that colour has not returned to stud-less Technic. -

Yes probably wishful thinking or maybe like the Volvo 42053 they will included a compressor so you can motorise yourself. seems to be plenty of space to put one in. -

As I cant see a manual pneumatic pump and its called power tow on the 42128 I think it might have a compressor which possibly means the new dumb battery box may be in it finger crossed. -
Seeing as my 8868 Air Claw cant be entered I'm going for the next one the often overlooked 8462 now having rebuilt it there are a lot of cool little features i never noticed when I first got it. Like the auto centring tailgate. I'll post some progress pics in a bit (supposed to be at work now My plan is to try and keep i as good a match as possible to the original so sticking with the even width winch is making the turntable a bit of a challenge.

I think I have an Idea which one I'll have a go at as it just needs to be stud-less not my normal make it with only the latest parts so that might make it a bit simpler as I can reuse some of the original parts that are stud-less. As were not allowed CG entries needs to be one I have the colours for as I don't enough yellow to have a go at 8862. but I'm super slow so i hope that 2 months will be enough time for me.

Or a lot of Control+ -
A few. Mainly for the knob wheels to line up with the gear selector you need 3 or 5 and I was having to many friction and space problems to make it fit, this works in the space and function won over form.

I have finished my instructions to add a gearbox D-N-R selector and sequential shifter I have also changed the ride height. You can get them here for free. Hope you like it.

Have uploaded the instructions to rebirckable Air-Claw It now has 328 steps up from the original 32 so maybe not as brutal to build as the original Hope you enjoy the build. I had some fun with the instructions as stud.io doesn't seem to like pneumatics too much but if there are errors please let me know.

Can you give me a link to that gearbox? I have not seen that one and I'm trying to improve my understanding of Lego gear boxes thanks. Also there is a reverse selector in the centre on the 488 GTB wich is what I'll mod this into.

Disaster just noticed the crank shaft is hitting one of the gears and is catching i think i can move the engine up half a stud to fix it and it should still fit in the engine bay

A quick and bad photo of the chassis with a 4speed gearbox sequential shifter and DNR selector. A few compromises have to be made to get it all to fit i modified the transmission from the Land Rover (i'm no good at gearbox ratios ) but i think it works. I have not had to change to much so with a bit of tweaking (see the air intake) it should still fit with the original body work but i also plan to do a custom body GTB as I'm no sticker fan. Also so it fits with my Enzo and 599 GTB The area around the DNR still needs work but I'll build up to the dash board and see if i can blend it in better. I have also tried to change the ride height but I'll see what that's like when i add the body work.

Now with Tubing!! It took most of the week but here it is with the tubes all in place I just noticed that i forgot to add the rubber band to connect the engine together I may re-render the front but its not that important at the moment. Now the long process of turning it into some plans.

My aim was to be as faithful to the 8868 as possible so i didn't add air tanks I haven't measured the gap so not sure they would fit. With the new V2 compressor and the power functions motor it seems to deliver better rate of compression from the original and will probably make the turntable even more uncontrollable. Back when i first got this I tried to tape up the fuel tanks to make them air tight how little i knew back then about air pressure I did think about it. Though I would probably consider the the dumb box and a motor as control + would be overkill for one "on" function. As i like to make all these models for real when i build them and don't have access to that part, like many I'm not paying £30 for it and would have bought the Osprey but we all know what happened to that Actually its quite robust as the crane superstructure is not that heavy. The claw doesn't have too much closing pressure and that will fail before the turntable. This could be why the original never had out riggers as its not a heavy lifter. The other issue is the tubing there are 6 pipes that need to feed past the turntable and it needs to rotate freely. As i said before I do build all of these for real but I show you the CG images for two reasons. 1) I don't have a good set up for tacking pictures and I'm quite rubbish at photography. 2) I don't all ways have the right colours available so my prototype looks a bit odd.
-
The part count at the moment is now 1213 this will go up with all the tubing and T connectors required so possible 20-30 parts Brick set has the original as 954 so a bit of a jump up

Finlay finished the instructions you can now download them for free here Air-Claw With a new Pneumatic truck possibly on the horizon, I decided to give the Redux treatment to one of my favourite models. This is due to its complexity and that it was the first large model that i bought for myself that was not a Christmas or Birthday present. And judging from a recent post on the forums a lot of you like it as well. I have still to model the tubing from my IRL model but I may have to switch to LDCad as stud.io is still not the best at this. As with most of the models of the old studded times, to convert to studless you have to switch the width from even to odd so the truck is now one stud wider. I have tried to keep as many details from the original and made changes where the new beams demand it or where newer parts allow a better build. With the redux models I make I always try to use the most current parts available so people who don't have the original have a chance to build it as well. Please let me know what you think especially the front of the truck as I have employed a few odd techniques to keep it looking like the original. Plans will follow eventually when i get the tubing done.

I know what is it with the pneumatics and horrid colour schemes i need some of those new switches. Volvo 42053 was so good, reasonable price great functions even had a compressor and easy to motorise -
Your quite right sometimes you just don't see it for looking a quick part swap about and here you go.
