1. If no one else is going to talk about the new sets, then I will because I am hyped. Monkie Kid’s dump truck? Meh. Another junky vehicle. Centipede side build is cute but that’s all. The Nine-Headed Beast is exciting and looks good, I love villain builds and this is a great one. The Heavenly Pagoda is so tall, like wow. I don’t know where I would even put it in my city, but am eagerly awaiting more details about that one. But Nezha’s Fire Ring Mech might be my favourite LEGO mech ever, the details and styling is so incredibly gorgeous. I want it, I need it.
2. Am I crazy, or does it look like the red panda in the Jungle sets is actually the old orange, while the one in DREAMZzz is the new reddish orange?
3. Well, I’m hyped. The Source Dragon looks absolutely incredible. The Temple City is gorgeous, though I’ll admit I don’t see at a glance how the Battle Arena is supposed to combine with it? Can’t wait for review shots. Also love that it looks like we get every figure in this wave except Pilot Cole by getting just the City and Battle Arena? Not that I intend to pass up the Source Dragon (assuming I can find somewhere to put all this. :P) Zane’s Bike . . wow. Trash. Doesn’t even have an enemy to redeem it? Who decided that? I’m baffled. Easy skip for me, same for the Combo Vehicle. The rest are at the least maybes, depending on budget and display space. (Kinda surprised Jay doesn’t get a ‘purified’ Tournament suit?)
4. So, to my shame I am not a big enough nerd to recognise off the top of my head which Iron Man variants are in the new sets and if they’re new ones that I need for my Hall of Armour. Sets look gorgeous! Not really a fan of the dioramas, but this is definitely the best one to date. Looking forward to the Iron Legion for army building, and definitely picking up Surtur.
5. I . . I’m so confused. The Master Emerald Shrine doesn’t have the Master Emerald, but looks like it has a place for the Master Emerald stand from the Knuckles Mech to attach to it? So this set is worthless if you don’t also buy the Knuckles Mech? I usually like it when sets can be combined, but this feels sleazy . . Egg Drillster looks . . worthwhile enough? Honestly, gonna buy for Super Sonic annd the Egg Pawn, and that’ll be that. Tails’ boat is also weird, but I appreciate that they gave him a launcher at least? I do like the inclusion of the Egg Pawns, those are great. Don’t think I can justify buying the Shrine just for that though . . I was only holding off on getting Knuckles’ Mech because I had a feeling Rouge would be in one of these sets, probably the boat, but apparently not. (Just Sonic and Tails makes the boat feel kinda bad value . .) Guess I’d better start watching its price.
6. This is the second time I’ve been impressed by DREAMZzz introducing a new part and immediately making it in lots of colours. Just like the ‘flames’ part from last year, this new 3x3 tube seems to be available in purple, the new reddish orange, actual orange, trans green and blue. (I’m not completely certain that the C-Rex doesn’t have the same reddish orange as is in Izzie’s Dream Animals but it does look like actual orange.)
7. Actually, the larger Raven set shows it with small Technic wheels filling those gaps, not female ratchet joints. So it seems to be hollow on the inside and capable of having stuff built within it, somehow. So I’m very curious to find out how that part works. Maybe it’s actually two half cauldrons?
8. Decided to run through all the set images to collate which ‘bottled realms’ are included in which set, for collection purposes; Nightmare Raven: Sandman’s Tower, Skull/Windmill, Green/Blue Cogs(?) Cat Motorcycle: Gaming Logan’s Mighty Panda: Skull/Windmill Dream Animals: Gaming Nightmare Creatures: Gaming, Village, Mushrooms, Castle Nocturnia C-Rex: Sandman’s Tower Z-Blob The Knight: Castle Nocturnia Castle Nocturnia: Skull/Windmill, Gaming, Village, Candy, Green/Blue Cogs(?) I’m not quite sure what the ‘Green/Blue Cogs’ one is, nor am I completely certain that the instances thereof in the Raven and Castle Nocturnia are the same design. So we’ll just sit on that for a bit I guess. It looks like the only exclusive ones are the Mushroom Realm in the Nightmare Creatures and - annoyingly - the Candy Realm in Castle Nocturnia. Though it also looks like, if you get those two sets, you’ll get all of them except for the Sandman’s Tower. (And if it turns out the two ‘Green/Blue Cogs’ ones are actually different designs, one of them will be exclusive to the Nightmare Raven anyway, so those three sets will get you all of them - alternatively, go for the C-Rex for its exclusive Cooper variant?) Also, I might be wrong (and this might be what the Cogs is actually intended to be) but it doesn’t look like the Treehouse is in any of these, which is an interesting choice.
9. I’m looking at the sets again and noticing a couple of things; First, Mr. Oz isn’t in any of these sets? That’s actually really annoying. I was counting on him coming in something this wave so that I wouldn’t need to get either of his previous sets (don’t know what to do with the Space Bus and not a huge fan of the non-canon golden variant in the Space Car). I hope that isn’t foreshadowing something happening to Mr. Oz. Second, with the exception of Mad-teo, all of the Dark versions of the heroes are based on their S1 outfits. So now I’m wondering if the Never-Witch has somehow stolen the dream avatars of the Dreamchasers and corrupted them, and they actually need to reinvent themselves around new ‘motifs’ to continue being Dreamchasers. Hence why Izzy has gone from a knight to a ninja, Zoey has changed from bandit to spy, Cooper is picturing himself as a robot. Not sure yet how that plays with Mateo and Logan, especially since Mad-teo is following his S2 look rather than his S1 look, but it’s a cool thought and I hope I’m right.
10. Okay, in addition to those three, we’ve got Castle Nocturnia and the Nightmare Creatures. Which, thankfully, does include Doom-Blob. Nightmare Creatures is a three-in-one where the main build is a smaller raven (to accompany the massive one I guess), the B-build is a winged nightmare version of Z-Blob the Robot (very ‘fallen angel’, I love it) and the C-build is one of those Nightmare Wolves we saw in the first season but never had a set of. The leftover pieces also get used for some terrain, which is so much better than just having random parts left over like like sets from the first two waves had. But Castle Nocturnia is incredible. Completely gorgeous, with fascinating sideways construction, and you can rotate it in different ways to make different towers the ‘top’. It’s a pity it only has three ‘sides’ but I’m okay with that. If I can find a place to put it, I definitely want it. ❤️❤️❤️ As for the other three, they’re all various degrees of ‘meh’? Can’t say I really care about a bigger animal build for Izzy when I’ve got Bunchu already - though the rebuild options for this one are definitely better and more varied. Good toy, good parts pack, but unlikely to be for me (unless I have an idea for a MOC involving its parts maybe). Logan’s mech panda is pretty neat but both of its figures are in other sets and I still kind of hate him as a character so unless S2 gives him a lot of redemption it’s probably a pass for me. Same for Zoey’s bike, though I’ll admit that this one is very stylish and I might get it just as a starting point for a MOC. Especially because Zoey’s secret agent look is very clean and I kinda wanna army build it just a little bit.
11. They’d only just gotten them in stock and wouldn’t let me buy them yet because they were still unpacking and I didn’t want to wait around until they were ready. Unfortunately, it only occurred to me that I should have taken a picture after the fact. I pass by that store every Tuesday for class, and I’m looking forward to going back next week and getting a couple.
12. So, my local LEGO Certified store got some new BAM minifigure parts in, including unique printed shoulder armour designed to go with the current City Space astronaut outfits and Futuron style torsos in coral. Which is a fascinating and exciting choice.
13. I only just noticed on my third look that there seems to be a running theme of the Never-Witch sealing entire Realms into bottles. I noticed the Sandman tower in the C-Rex, but if you look at the Nightmare Raven, there are three bottles with different designs in them so it looks like there’s going to be an entire plotline about her trying to steal entire realms and seal them away for some reason. That’s exciting! And terrifying.
14. The Raven and Knight Z-blob are so gorgeous. Knight might be my favourite LEGO mech ever in terms of appearance for the sheer Gundam-looking aesthetic, it’s gorgeous and I can’t wait to get it. The Raven is just as good, even if I was really hoping it would be more of an evil Kaiju for Z-Blob to fight. I’m disappointed by the C-Rex, though . . like, the design is good, but the chaotic colours and rusty junkyard aesthetic kind of just ruin it for me. I like my mechs clean, and this looks like it’s reused from TLM2 Apocalypseburg concept art. I’ll reserve judgment until I see reviews, though. The new looks for the main heroes, and the Dark versions of them, are all super clean though, I’m excited. ^^
15. I am genuinely annoyed that the White Classic Spaceman, the only one to have been in more than a single set in the last ten years, is being used a third time here. Pink and Yellow were exclusive to the Benny pack, Red was exclusive to Galaxy Explorer, Green hasn’t been seen since the Mech set, Purple and Gray required assembly, Brown was a CMF and Orange was exclusive to that book . . but no, White gets three sets. That doesn’t even make sense, Red and Yellow were the originals and Blue is the most iconic because Benny and also Classic Space’s inherent blue/grey/trans-yellow aesthetic. (Relatedly, how has it been ten years since TLM and we still don’t have a non-scratched up version of Benny’s torso print?) While I’m soapboxing, can we please get a reissue of the Black Classic Spaceman? It’s the only one I don’t have (even managed to find an old but pristine Blue torso to use with the helmet from Gamers’ Market, so I’m fine for Blue, but for everyone else’s sake they should still make new Blue and Black).
16. I have serious questions about the light post, it really feels like they were just trying to inflate the part count there. For a second I thought it could be used as a display stand, with the speeder attached to it on an angle at the top, but I think that was just a trick of the art and now I’m annoyed. Still going to get it because I’m a sucker for exclusive Jedi and army-building the 501st. Hopefully it’ll go on sale, but I’m not too optimistic.
17. One thing I’m noticing that I really love is that none of the outfits have any skin showing on them, so you could easily swap around the heads to change the composition of the party . . well, except for the halfling probably but it’s still very much appreciated.
18. “Z-Blob The Knight”? With a piece count like that, could we expect a Titan Mech style robo scale version of Z-blob? That sounds exciting. I’m also stoked for the C-Rex. Car-Rex, maybe? I’m hoping for a Truckosaurus vibe. Also quite curious about the ‘Northern Crow’ - sounds sort of like it might be a bad guys base build, finally, maybe hopefully? Or else some kind of giant nightmare monster, which would also be awesome. Intrigued by the fact that the Never-Witch seems to be replacing the Nightmare King as the main villain, and hopefully will be in more sets. Kind of surprised in all honesty, she didn’t really seem like main villain material, but neither did the Spider Queen at first I guess. Bit disappointed that NK was only in two sets after all that . .
19. I was really hoping this would be a bunch of Minifigure scale buildings, all connected together. Something I could put in my city. Sigh. Easy skip for me, then.
20. Pictures of the Space Science Lab are officially out and I love it! It’s like a terrarium! It’s gorgeous! And they’ve finally, on their third try, done a building with two airlocks, so that we can actually attach it to the City and Friends bases as an expansion! Definitely getting this! https://lego.bricksmegastore.com/products/lego-city-space-science-lab?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=NEW VIP PRE-ORDER SETS <AU>02.03.24 (01HQW31M2EC2NRTSZN2G0YG8F3)&_kx=0N9rxmExFA0eGmVsA3dCJEJkGcskkYCwbpM4kppZlrDxfItMLcV2GwwXtNcro4Ao.UYvNsm There is a little alien who’s been recruited and given his own little space suit, it’s adorable! And a disabled spaceman with a hover bike that’s built to accomodate his wheelchair? Weird but interesting!
21. The Friends Mars Rover looks gorgeous, I love it. Trying to figure out how it connects to the airlock system, though, it looks like the main body of the rover detaches from the wheels and then splits in half? I really wish they’d done some kind of ‘hub’ set, because there are a lot of attachment points but not a lot of things to attach them to. I want to put everything together into a giant space base, dang it.
22. This is literally my first time buying a set on day 1; I always wait for sales, but Big W in my area somehow managed to get the Isabelle/Fauna and Bunni sets out and available for pretty good prices, so I picked both of them up. They are adorable and I really hope this theme succeeds because I will buy every set they put out. Fauna’s House in particular is going to be a great addition to the suburbs of my LEGO city. The other three sets are less generously priced, so I’m probably going to wait until the Easter sales, but definitely looking forward to having them!
23. I was genuinely disappointed to learn that the wolves were just masked humans, because I thought that we’d get a whole tribe of Ras-alikes. If this happens I am so down for it.
24. The $80 set is a Battle Bus with ten minifigures apparently? That can’t possibly be correct, right? Sounds way too good to be true.
25. I expect Thing to be represented by this part either way, honestly, that hand doesn’t look very necessarily minidoll-ish. I am wondering if we might get a version of the ‘power blast’ minifig hand attachment piece with an anti stud instead of a stud though, that would be interesting and let him walk around.
