  1. Hmm, I guess plain brown pants could go both ways. Either by adding uniformity, or by looking too monotonous. I think what way you see it is a very personal thing. The poll clearly favours the brown pants, so there is that.
  2. From the given examples, I prefer the plain brown legs. Do you have some comparison pictures with the "regular" troops?
  3. Two questions concerning licensed plantations: Do plantations have to be "pure", or can the be "mixed"? By a "mixed plantation" I mean something like a little farm, growing different things (e.g. potatoes, onions, some apple trees, some pigs, some chicken). Or does it have to be "one crop only"? This one is a bit more gamey. Does a MOC for a build have to exist in its entirety at a given time, or can I build it in stages, make pictures of each stage and only present the pictures as a result? As an example, take a medium plantation, and somebod who has enough parts to fill one 32x32 plate. Instead of one build for a small plantation, there are four different arrangements on that one plate, all photographed once finished, and then deconstructed for the next build. At no time is there a full 64x64 build, but there are pictures of four different 32x32 builds. Can that count as a medium plantation? Asking for a friend...
  4. Even if you chose the wrong nation to support: welcome!
  5. [Example of a small potato plantation] Name: Potato (Solanum Tuberosum) IC background: The potato has a mostly unknown background. Thought to have been brought over from natives in the Easter Islands in the very early colonial period, potatoes have become the staple diet of many countries, most notably Corrington. A prominent family in the world of potatoes is Clan Spud, of course, 'spud' being vernacular for 'potato'. This Northern-dwelling clan in Corrington has built up estates of potato farms and are now seeking to expand these plots eastwards in the name of Her Majesty. OOC background: The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum. The word "potato" may refer either to the plant itself or to the edible tuber. In the Andes, where the species is indigenous, some other closely related species are cultivated. Potatoes were introduced to Europe in the second half of the 16th century by the Spanish. In 1845, a plant disease known as late blight, caused by the fungus-like oomycete Phytophthora infestans, spread rapidly through the poorer communities of western Ireland as well as parts of the Scottish Highlands, resulting in the crop failures that led to the Great Irish Famine. On Wikipedia, both the main article about potatoes as well as a seperate article about the history of the potato are worth reading. 6. Name: Cacao Tree (Theobroma Cacao) IC background: The cacao tree is famous for producing cocoa beans, which of course are in turn used to produce chocolate. The trees grow in abundance on the island of Cocovia in the Sea of Thieves and Corlander entrepreneurs refined the bitter tasting drink that the natives of that place made from the fermented beans into the sweet treat that is so famous across the Brick Seas today. For more IC background, check Ayrlegos excellent cocoa plantation (link also below). OOC background: Theobroma cacao, also called the cacao tree and the cocoa tree, is a small (4–8 m (13–26 ft) tall) evergreen tree in the family Malvaceae, native to the deep tropical regions of Central and South America. Its seeds, cocoa beans, are used to make cocoa mass, cocoa powder, confectionery, ganache and chocolate. To find out more, check Wikipedia. Especially interesting are the sections about the history of cultivation and the mythology around cacao. 7. Name: Apple (Malus Domestica) IC background: Even though not the best fruit to grow in a tropical climate, it is common to see apple orchards in many Eslandola settlements because of the main activity of the MAESTRO Trade Company. It is said it was Felipe de la Manzana who introduced the old world fruit in Nellisa and then in Berelli to secure some jungle areas. Now, the MAESTRO Company is developping its activity and even far settlements like Trador are hosting apple orchards. OOC Background: 3rd fruit to be eaten in the world, 1st fruit in France, the apple is mainly associated to the forbidden fruit the snake offered to Adam and Eve in the Genesis. This fruit is mainly associated to the Original Sin. For a less mythological approach, there are actually two Wikipedia articles worth reading: one gives a good overview of the biology of different apple species, another one deals with the cultivated fruit, including sections about history, culture and myths - and of course cultivation! Apples are also the raw material for cider - again, the Wikipedia article includes local variations and festivities related to cider. 8. An excellent read, and a great summary of current events. Keep it coming! P.S.: Any way this can be supported by some builds?
  9. Looking good, if only a bit... small? Seriously, a nice micro-build. I'd like to know how these are handled for licensing purposes though?
  10. Since I have not infested this thread with my questions yet: is it possible to start one of this adventures at a later point, or is there a set amount of "entry points" - maybe once every three months - that one has to use? I am asking because my BotBS schedule is full until the start of December, but by then I would like to send Reinhard to do some exploration...
  11. This is going strong already, thanks for all the contributions so far! Please note that I will repost your "datasheets" myself, possibly with some additional content. Each of yours will be linked to, this is not about taking anyones credit. But since I can only edit my own posts, and would like to have the option of adding to entries easily at a later point, I will have to post everything under "my name". I will make that clear in the FAQ section in the OP. Keep it coming!

    Brig "Aurora"

That is a really nice ship build. I would love to see some all-around detail pictures!
  13. Name: Sugarcane (Saccarum Officinarum) IC background: Sugarcane is grown and harvested all over the Brickseas, with some of the biggest plantations to be found on Celestia. Corrington is known to grow sugarcane all over its colonies, supporting a thriving rum industry. OOC background: Originally from East Asia, sugarcane has been cultivated there for over 2500 years already. It was later brought to the Middle East and the mediterrean area and provided most sugar for North Africa, Europe and theMiddle East. This changed when the so-called New World turned out to provide even better conditions for the sugarcane plant. From the 16th to the 19th century, the Carribean was the main producer of sugarcane and sugar. A short overview over the plant and its uses can be found on the English Wikipedia, but the German Wikipedia article is much more in-depth. 14. The BotBS Plants Index 1.) What is this thread about? This thread is supposed to be a comprehensive collection of all plants that are known in the BotBS setting. It is meant as a reference for both IC and OOC background on these plants, as well as a collection of builds. So whenever somebody wants to grow a certain crop on a new plantation, there is a first point of reference to be found here. 2.) How will this be done? I will collect a list of currently "available" plant builds and update them. Each entry in the list will link to a seperate post in this thread, which will provide the available details, as well as further links to posts and pictures using that build. If multiple build versions of a plant exist - sugarcane is a fine example - there will be links to all of them. This thread will always be work in progress, so do not hesitate to add suggestions or to discuss existing entries. The whole thing is not meant to be set in stone, but a continuous community effort. 3.) How can I help? I appreciate any help given. Most helpful would be any bit of IC and/or OOC background you can provide, as well as links to as many builds for each plant as possible. You can also discuss build options not yet available, as well as talk about what kind of plants you think would be a nice addition. 15. That is a nice heavy clock tower. Those Oleanders just can not appreciate quality work.
  16. It has been almost 18 months now, any progress on the matter? Who is the local map-wizard to be bribed?
  17. The OP has been updated with some proper background. Here are some more dtail pictures: A cupboard for the household necessities, also holding a rifle for hunting. Then there is a desk with an outgoing letter, and a letter to be written. Below you can see parts of the cellar, with barrels full of goods for the winter. The other side of the ground floor has another table (pot and pan for cooking, a bottle of... your guess is as good as mine), a fireplace, some pots of spices on the chimney, a ladder to the upper level, and a box full of food - sitting on top of the door to the cellar below. Thanks everybody for the positive feedback so far! I will reply to all comments tomorrow.

  20. Ask and ye shall recieve! It is nighttime here, so please forgive the poor lighting: And if somebody is interested in the roof construction: The six connectors might seem excessive, but any less and the whole thing became unstable.
  21. Thank you. Licensed as a small residence in Elizabethville it is then. The only thing that gave me a headscratch was the question about it being a "free property". I clicked "no", but I read somewhere that certain builds (even residences) are in fact free? That needs some un-confusing.
  22. After leaving the Old World for the colonies, Marcus Cole has set up a new home for his family in Elizabethville. Marcus Cole once had a good life in the Old World. He had a small restaurant of his own, a garden full of herbs nearby, and a farm growing many of his favourite ingredients. Life was good. That was before the war. Many men left the mainland to fight for the Crown. The women had more pressing issues than eating well. Marcus had to close his restaurant. It was only for his wife Susan, who was a saddler and thus had more work than ever with horses needing to be equipped for the war, that the Cole family did not fall into poverty. But life was hard, and Marcus wanted it to become better. His daughter Marie had just been born, and she should grow up in an environmentvoid of economical struggles. When Marcus heard that the colonies were open to settlers, and especially the town of Elizabethville was looking for settlers, he decided to embrace the chance of a new live abroad. If the rumurs were true, Elizabethville was a hub of horse trade and a growing farming industry. Perfect opportunities for a saddler like Susan and a farmer like Marcus! Not long after, the Cole family made the journey to the colonies. The "Soupfish" might have not been the most precious vessels in the Crowns fleet, but it made for a safe passage. Aboard the ship, Marcus also made contact with the Otis family, who were heading for new chances and a better life, just like himself. They shared their experiences, and promised to stay in contact once they had settled down in Elizabethville. Now here we are, with Marcus having built a new home for his family. A solid stone basement below a wooden house, both affordable and stable. Marcus also did set up a small garden close to the house, using seeds he hade brought with him from the Old World. Potatoes and pumpkins were already growing strong, and Marcus had plans to expand the garden soon. Rumour had it that the local soil was perfect for sugarcane, so that could be another option for future growth. Marcus wished for a new restaurant of his own, but for the time being it might be wiser to focus on the farming... Susan already had plans for a new saddlery, as both the local settler as well as the natives could use her sevices. Maybe she could get a blacksmith to work together with her? That would be a worthwhile joint venture... None of this mattered to Marie of course. She just loved the new envrionment and had already made friends among the locals. Every day she ventured further into the lands around. Markus Cole, his wife Susan, their daughter Marie, and their cat Momo, in front of the house: Some shots from the rear and the roof: The roof can be removed... ... and the house be opened:
  23. Ah, I see. Sorry for the confusion, it was a long day...
  24. Sorry, it was just a bad joke anyway, but I'll explain. Coming into this game as a newb I see "Royal Society" left, right and center - of course without seeing them develop to their current status. Now there is another one, and silly-joke me had to make a comment. That's all.
  25. Congratulations to the ETTC and its members. Who does not become "royal" sooner or later though?
