GHOST TOWN emerges from the darkness !!!
WesternOutlaw replied to Brick Miner's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Brick Miner: First, let me say that your imagery is beautiful. I'm very impressed with how you capture the "Lego feel" of your MOCs, box art, and tricks/traps (with the arrows). It would be fair to say that this is the best that I've seen. You could easily go to work for Lego as a box art designer. In regard to your MOCs: The Hotel: I like the use of the brown Lego western pieces that really give the Hotel a western look. I also like how the spooky hotel resemples a skull/face with the eyes as windows and white trim. The bottom is a bit open, but I'm guessing you did this for horses/wagons. I also like the trap bed which adds a very nice touch. The use of the blue roof pieces is simple, yet effective. I'm not sure why you didn't use real blue window pains though. Was this for the crack effect, not sure? I like the falling stairs in the design of the Gold Mine too. Lstly, the Hotel sign is outstanding. Nice shape and lettering. Mercantile: I'm not too sure about the overall look of this building. I'm not real crazy about the openess of the bottom floor with the brown arch. You did something similar with your saloon. I wonder how this would look closed up with a door and window? The top windows look a bit large, but I like the crack effect and the red rood pieces again. The sign is also nice. Figs: I like the wanderer- definately a lost soul. I like the purple, choice of face, and most of all the horse shoe. My only comment is that for having a lucky horse shoe, you would think the wanderer would be a little more happy. Perhaps make it a bad luck horse shoe and this ties in with the sad face. He could be looking to get rid of it, but to no prevail can he do so. Cookie: Excellent. I love the orange shirt, brown vest, and guns. Great adventure face making this the hero of Shiversdale. Wranger: I'm not too fond of this character. It must be the shirt. The colors are fine and even the face, but I suppose the shirt doesn't capture the Mexican look. Is that a lantern he carries? Other Comments: Overall, very nice. Just some constructive critisism mentioned above, but aside from these items, this is really well done. I also like the use of the two Gold Mine baseplates (I've always loved the wagon tracks), and also the Shiversdale sign. You have definately captured the spirit of the Lego Wild West and the Ghost Town subtheme in a manner befitting of Lego. Your graphic ability really adds to the likeability factor. Oh how I wish Lego would have offered a Ghost Town sub-theme. I would have bought multiple sets. Nice job Brick Miner. Looks great! ;-) -
Some of the British troops are very nice. I like the blue coats as well.

Definately 4554. My vote without hesitation. I wish I had purchased this years ago, but I didn't have a train to circle it. I like the yellow station followed by the red duplicate. The worst station (and I own it), is the new yellow station. Way too modern. I don't like the architecture, and it just looks like an underwater sub base to me. 4555 is pretty slick too. I don't remember this set at all. Very nice.

I like to mix castle and pirates. The ships look good next to an old fortress.
-
Who isn't? Everytime I go to build a MOC, I run out of pieces that I need to complete.
-
Do you have a single favorite or "best of the bunch"?
-
Nice MOC. It actually reminds me of not the Blacksmith Shop, but rather one of the very old idea books from the early 80s. They had a house similar with a red or blue roof. I'll try to find a picture. Here it is. I have this somewhere in the house, but the house reminds me of the house on the cover page:

Very nice. I love the forestmen! And great imagery.

Off with his head! Norro, grab a battle axe, would you.

You're always welcome to join this forum Mr. Tiber. Just get rid of that scurvy Phes-looking avatar ;-) .

No, I didn't use connectors. In addition, it's hard to tell from the pictures, but the bricks are white instead of grey. It's funny that the pictures came out that way. Didn't even think of this when I used the orange pieces. Thanks for your comments.

Norro's recent Castle Guard review got me looking at some classic castle sets. I was admiring the simplicity but yet the nice design of sets like the Armory and the Blacksmith shop. So I tried my own version of an Armory/Weapon's Shop. Here's a few shots: Here's a shot of Lego's official Armor Shop:

I picked up this set yesterday and built it last night. It's a nice set. Took a while for me to build, but well worth it. The figs are nice. I esp. like Boba and the Bespin Guard (need a few more). The ship itself is pretty sturdy (and heavy). Good design, and nice detail. My only complaint is how the arms don't attach to the wings, They just rest at the end. Here's the image from Starwars4J's review: In addition, once again (just like the original), the Han Solo compartment in the back is funky. At least this one slides out unlike the first (which seemed to always stick). One has to lift the back up to make Han go in all the way. Aside from these two issues, it's a great set.

Great choic. I've still got mine from when I was a kid. Here's a pic review I did last year: Yellow Castle Review I'd have to go with 6765 Wild West Gold City Junction (at least within my top three all time sets):
-
The yellow castle just brings back my early castle experiences. Fun time!
-
Excuse me. I mean to say I like the older ones better.
-
I think it's the forestmen. They're more rare and more desired. Neither set is worth $50/$100. I would never pay that price for a few figs (no matter how much I liked them).
-
Check out this great Medieval village MOC. I love the classic design. The large yellow castle is excellent: The whole gallery: Buildenham

I like the old pointed shields better myself. Classic is the best! BTW: "Most desired" minifig could be a fig you've always wanted (or) one that you have and would never want to part with. You may have the fig but someone else could desire it. *wub*

Historic MOCs/Themes Inspired by Movies
WesternOutlaw replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Definately, I agree. Have any other movies inspired you to build a specific scene/theme? -
6045 Ninja Surprise is the correct answer to the riddle. The ninja is black.
-
I'm not a big Lego SW collector, but I did buy this when the movie came out. It's true that it's not that sturdy, but I still like the set. The colors are very nicely done with some good design pieces. In addition, three clone-troopers and droid add to the playability. I like how the wings open. Overall, I like this set, and would probably buy again.

Overall, I like it. It's not quite what I expected, but I've been hoping for a Holiday train for a long time. I always thought Lego should offer just a steam engine with maybe a coal car, and release a different holiday car each year as a collectors piece (limited in number - like the original SF engine).

Nice review Graynar. Thanks for taking the time to share your images and thoughts of this set. I've only watched this cartoon once or twice and don't understand the story-line. What surprises me is that there's only a few sets to the theme. Perhaps Lego plans to have more in 2007.

A ninja set for you to ponder, Of small design and pieces of wonder. It has three figs, two red and black, With treasure for the samurai to sack. Two ornamental carp and goblets of gold, And a trap with single pin to hold. Can you guess this ninja set? I know you can, I will bet.
