Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
peter_m replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I beg to differ. To me PR is the best modular in line, the most mature one - it maintains a perfect balance between the amount of details on the outside and inside of the building. I do not mind that modulars tell stories, they are pretty generic and not invasive. I treat modulars as big vignettes. If you are a person that likes to get hands dirty, you are free to modify whatever you want (story, interior, building itself etc.). If you, on the other hand, just like to enjoy the set "as is" - then you have it all there. If TLG was to start selling bare buildings they would probably draw off a significant number of potential buyers. We would all lose then - lower popularity means less money for future designs :) -

Can you elaborate on this please? I am genuinely curious why do you think so :) -

Again - "Pet Shop" also does not sound too cool, does it? ;) -

Lego Shop@Home description (for 10243) says that baseplate is 25cm (10") x 25cm(10"). If it is actually 10" then it is more like 25.4cm - so keep in mind that is not exactly 25 :) -

Baseplate is 25x25cm - height of a building varies for different sets. -

School or science lab (aka Research Institute ;) ) would be great - or a hospital -
Suggestion on first modular building to buy and build?
peter_m replied to BirdOPrey5's topic in LEGO Town
Some will say that you should start with the oldest one from those still available - in case you get hooked and in some point of time will feel an urge to get them all in retail price :). The oldest one is Grand Emporium. But if you just want to buy one (and you are certain about it) i would personally recommend Parisian Restaurant as it is the most detailed (both inside and on the outside) modular to date :) -

It is not that I have taken a personal crusade agains Astrid's creations - it is just that Jamie's style appeals to me a lot more :) -

This is just a matter of personal taste. I do like (or even love - yes Parisian Restaurant & Pet Shop, I am looking at you) all of the modulars that Jamie has designed so far - so there is a higher possibility that I will also like the new one. In case of Astrid's modulars - I always find something disappointing. Town Hall was decent, but I just can't stand the elevator's mechanism - it messes up the back of the building. To me modulars are all about the looks and not playability - so why has the appearance been sacrificed? The other one, Cinema Palace, looks like it was taken from some different story. The style of other modulars was (and still is) pretty much consistent - and then came grotesque chinatown-style cinema. Disappointing... Disclaimer: all of the above are my personal feelings regarding modulars. It was not my intent to cause any disturbance or quarrels :) -
I have just started gathering modulars (so far I got Grand Emporium and Pet Shop - both still in boxes) but I am definitely planning to get second Pet Shop and 2 Parisian Restaurants. I would like to make both PS and PR a bit bigger, at the same time keeping them on their original 32x32 and 32x16 baseplates. I have limited display space :) For Pet Shop I have planned adding 1 more floor to both buildings and fixing shop's staircase. For restaurant I have planed making the building wider (by removing the balcony).

I only hope that Jamie is the designer of this one, not Astrid... -

Oh my oh my! But can you define what does "reliably informed" mean? Also £132.99 means that it will not be as big as Town Hall - which is good! -
It's never appealed to me - I am just considering buying it as it is a great part's pack - and I would love to turn it into modular train station :)

This topic is perfectly on time - I was just wondering if I should get the Town Hall or not :)

You can always build passenger cars for 60052 engine - but you can not use 60051 as cargo train. Maybe you can use this argument :)

Thanks for the link - I have checked and polish Pixmania has it at the very same price. But it does not fit into my this year's purchase list :(

So I have built my 7939 today (not played with it yet - I do not have the batteries ). I have a few conclusions so far: Engine - it is well designed and realistic - I even do not mind those bulky cabin parts. It is also bigger than I thought it will be. I love it! Railroad cars - they are also well designed and I really like the diversity (but I need like 3 more of those ;) ) Truck - ah... I obviously appreciate SNOT technique at the front - but still - I hate it... Crane - it is useless for me - I will not assemble it. Overall - it was a good choice because the core (train + cars) is outstanding. Now I feel like I need more trains and more tracks :)

Girl with telescope from Research Institute would look nice on this small balcony :). Also if the basement was deeper (that would need serious modifications), you could create a secret chemistry lab there ;)

I suggest that you get SBrick ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sbrick/sbrick-smart-way-to-control-all-your-lego-creation ) as soon as it is out :)

Your "New Build & Review" series got me hooked on modulars. My inner child tells me I should thank you - but my fiancee and credit card do not actually agree ;)

You could put any other Lego theme in place of "Train World" ;)

Aaand it has happened - I have ordered my 7939 for $177 with free shipping - I guess that is a reasonable price :)

I hate that they started creating those big elements such as 7939's cab and 60051's front. It seems to be getting worse.
