This is a dangerous position to take by Lego. There are restaurants and other businesses going down because of customers sharing their bad experiences in social media. In all the cases that I remember, the problems really started when the business reacted badly towards the criticism. Even if the set sells well and most customers are satisfied with their purchase, the underlying problems don't necessarily stay hidden between afols' grinding teeth. Careful PR is absolutely necessary these days. There is no reason why this one set should cause problems for TLG. They just need to fix the problem and move on to the next, supposedly excellent sets. Most of the fixing can be done in PR, without spending too much money.

I love this idea. Although I'd like it to be at a slightly higher price point, so that there would be more functions inside. I think the diesel / electrical engine takes most of the space inside, so the drivetrain will be the interesting part. So how about a steam engine, where a big part of the drivetrain is outside? It would create a wealth of mods and different attachments (train cars).

Maybe they are not really pulling it, in the sense of recalling all the sets that have been sent to Lego stores worldwide. Instead they are delaying sending out any more until they've fixed whatever they are now fixing. -

In gaming (as well as some other industries) it is almost a standard procedure to have a closed alpha period where designated testers from the community get their hands on the product before it's finalized. I think something to a similar effect could be used here. -

I'm trying real hard to be the shepher... Sorry, I'm trying real hard to not make this about Lego as a whole, but to consider this stupidity an isolated event inside the Porsche project. They have such good things going with the other sets. But the failing PR makes it difficult. -

Well, since you can't see the engine, maybe they were thinking nobody would ever find out that it's not sequential? After reading that statement, this is the first time I'm actually angry at TLG about this set. -

Oh that is just stupid! It seems that they couldn't make it right within a certain time and budget, and just dropped it. -

Information about the availability messes with my head. In the Reddit thread U.S. and Canada customers have been calling their local Lego shops (not S@H) and apparently it will be available also there. According to the press release it "will initially be available at shop.LEGO.com from June 1st, 2016, as well as in the 13 LEGO stores throughout Germany and Austria. It will be available in other stores from August 1st, 2016." So right now I don't understand where it will actually be available, let alone when. -

I will let the gearbox issues slide. I don't think they are really that serious, this being Lego and having slack here and there all the time. What leaves me wanting, is lack of functionality. Like you said, Jim, the rear axle steering would have been very nice. It would have made this a must for me. Now I will probably concentrate on the other 2nd half sets, until I find the Porsche with a better price. At that point, there's probably also a nice Ultimate Ultimate Porsche created by the community, so I'll hit the ground running and go straight to that :). Thanks for the review, it was a great read! -

Well that would be an interesting development. Last minute recall, almost literally. Twists and turns in this story. -

Could you perhaps share some more details on the engine? It looks quite interesting. -

I also have to say I really like the B-model now. It's almost evil to design a B-model that goes so well woth the A-model. I have to consider bying two. -

I bet you guys remember the 8860 Car Chassis, with its gearbox? It also had way too much friction on the first gear, so it was disabled in the manual. When you motorized the engine, you'd enable the gear again (and if I remember correctly, you were instructed to disable the third gear at that point). I wouldn't expect TLG to do that today, but at that time, it seemed like an acceptable solution.
