Surprisingly, it's my best performing locomotive. I've run it for over five hours now and haven't noticed an issue. In fact, it operates more smoothly than any other steam locomotive in my collection, and that's saying something. You just need to have some batteries on standby if you're going to nonstop run it all day (which goes for any power functions engine). I highly recommend it, the build was easy and fun, and most of the parts are available on Lego.com.

The flex track was there before I made it, so I left it. The "turf" is from an old camper of my fathers, but I plan to use baseplates on my permanent layout. It's sort of cool, and it's easily cleaned. As for the cars, I just ordered instructions for some from Sava, and I already have a baggage car built, but not shown in the video. I also want to use the similar design to build an observation car, dome, and maybe a few "club cars" (which were never actually made in the Daylight scheme, but I like them anyways).

This is a project over ten years in the making. Seven years ago, I went to the Owosso Train Festival in Michigan, my home state. Me, my mother, and my older brother all rode the SP 4449, which is my brother's favourite steam locomotive. I can never forget how happy he was. He's been in love with the engine all of his life, so I decided it was time to give back. Thanks to Tony Sava, an excellent MOC builder, I have completed this wish in Lego. Pictures will be posted here. A video posted below. (Poor quality, I know.) Suggestions and criticism welcome! (All credit for the design goes to the skilled Tony Sava, not me.)

40166 Legoland Train compatible with 4621929 tracks?

This wheel could also work ;) -
Thanks everyone for the replies. The guard rails effect I actually haven't thought of yet, so i might use it. Thanks! As for an outdoor track, I don't really have the space or yard to do it with, so that is out of the question, sadly. The siding idea is very clever, and I have around six or seven different sidings in my train yard that could benefit from that. Thanks again! The issue with derailing steam locomotives is common for me. I have six different steam locomotives and they derail 50% of the time they go around my large curve. I normally run them on my inner loop made of 9v track, but with another large locomotive being built, I want to try and limit the issue so that I can run it around my entire layout.

Hello everyone. I've been wondering, are there any actually good uses for the flexible track that Lego seems to put in almost every set? I have over 200 pieces of the stuff and I have almost nothing to do with them. I tried making a sort of large radius curve with them, but it twists so much because of the flexibility and isn't an exact curve. If anyone has suggestions or ideas, please leave a comment below.

4-2-4 and 4-4-0 Western Steam locos and their trains
storms26 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I think that the tender on the 4-4-0 is quite large for the type of engine being modelled. Maybe something smaller? Either way, great builds, as always. -
LEGO train storage systems - boxes, bins, and bags!
storms26 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Even though I don't do shows nor am I in a club (there are none near me) I use long, but short clear plastic totes to transport trains, while wrapping them in some sort of plastic bag or such to make sure none of the pieces are broken or mixed up. -
I want a large articulated locomotive or a 4-8-4 northern! Haha I wish they would sell large sheds, bridges, turntables, things of that type. A creator expert set of a roundhouse would be great, especially if you could combine them to make them larger.

I really would like to believe Lego could pull off a surprise fall train set, but I doubt that will happen. I mean, this set looks decent, but it's size and style won't even compare to the older Holiday Train. However, I'm already thinking of ways to make the engine into a 4-4-0, or just simply add driving rods or something that will give it a spark.

I still think that the tender is a bit tall... Shortening it by about two bricks to make it look a bit more like the real thing. ;)

Looks absolutely striking! Great job on the interior and the lights!

Texas Brick Railroad @ Brick Fiesta 2016

Loved seeing the layout in person! The sheer size was already stunning, but the total detail just blew me away! Hope to attend next year! -
8 passenger cars from 4561 hauled by 60051 11 freight cars hailed by my "Mighty Mouse" shunter moc My "record" is 14 heavy passenger cars hauled by the engine from the Horizon Express with two 9v motors.

Southern Pacific Daylight #4449's Auxiliary Tender, DLMX 4219
storms26 replied to storms26's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I've been going back and forth on whether or not I would want to use PF, but I tried to find every battery box, receiver, and motor I could find but they were all being used. I've also had a bad history with Power Functions, since it seems that I have to replace the batteries so often and that they are heavier than 9v engines. I wanted to try that technique that you used for quite some time, but I haven't gotten to buying any larger motors from Lego.com (still hesitating on buying one for the Emerald Night!). -

He never posted his instructions; someone else did, but of a Big Boy inspired by his. -
Southern Pacific Daylight #4449's Auxiliary Tender, DLMX 4219

I will most likely use 9v motors as I will run pretty long trains but there's a pretty good sized chance I also won't since the motors cost so much nowadays. -

I've used Tony's instructions, and they are very nicely done. He also includes parts lists. -
Beautiful model! The way you got the stripes and the number 1 on the side is very clever!

So, a long while ago, I purchased Tony Sava's instructions of the Daylight 4449, and have recently started to build it. So far, I have the tender almost finished, and the engine parts about ready to be purchased. While I was building the tender, I thought about how the engine could really use a water tender to go behind it as well. So, I took to LDD and built one while taking inspiration from the instructions. LDD version: (Sorry for the blurry image, can't upload over 100k) Suggestions and criticism welcomed!

Updated Santa Fe train - what features would you want?
storms26 replied to Lego Dino 500's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Looking a lot better for the nose, but I still think that the windscreen could use some work. -

storms26 replied to Lego Dino 500's topic in LEGO Train Tech
They look pretty darn good so far! I suggest a new nose for the engine, since it's sort of sharp and square. As far as the cars, the only thing I can recommend is the grey coloured wheels and couplets from the old high speed trains. -
Looks great, never seen that sort of technique you used for the front pairs of wheels before. Although I do suggest that you smoothen out the tender with some tiles.
