Minifigure parts in LDD?
Lyichir replied to ZebraFinch001's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Unfortunately, most parts on LDD are labeled according to the official 5-digit Design ID number for undecorated versions of the part. Bricklink identifies many parts by their Design ID numbers, but that does not extend to most minifigure parts. And decorated parts go by different Design ID numbers even on Lego's customer service database (and Brickset's, which is also sourced from there). LDD does not have all decorations, so you can't get the printed version of that part. However, you can substitute an undecorated version. The helmet in question is listed as 30370 REBEL PILOT HELMET. Search the name or number to quickly access the part in question. For future issues like this, it's often easiest to browse the parts manually to find the part you need. It's helpful to keep in mind that parts are listed in LDD roughly by size—smaller parts are listed first in categories, followed by progressively larger parts. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
No point in announcing a new set to mass audiences right before Black Friday, only for shoppers to be disappointed when they learn it isn't going to be available for a while. Sure, the leak makes the set something of an open secret in the AFOL community, but as always, we represent just a small portion of Lego's overall audience, and generally a more informed one. I don't think the new flowers are that bad... they definitely look more like flowers, and are more rounded. Certainly not preferable for everything the old flower tiles were used for, but I can think of a good many scenarios where they would be better. -
The Brick Fan has finalized pics of next year's Friends sets! A lot of really neat stuff!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Are we even sure it's Cool Yellow? As much as I'd like to see that as a modular color at some point, I think the brickwork on the new modular might just be Brick Yellow (Tan). Better pictures will hopefully clarify things. -
I would think it might be more likely that they might both be based on similar early concept art. I know a lot of recent material in Rebels or the Disney-produced movies has drawn from unused Ralph McQuarrie concepts...

Hey, Nexo Knights still has boxes! You want real thinking outside the box, look at Bionicle—they have canisters. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Always disappointing to see how many AFOLs haven't outgrown their distaste for the color pink. The colors for this modular are fairly realistic for the subject matter, and the complexity and building techniques are on par with past modulars, so all the comparisons to Friends betray a rather juvenile apprehension toward anything that could be perceived as "girly"... -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I saw someone elsewhere say the official reveal is this week. That would not only explain the lack of a crackdown, but also why no major fansites have posted it as news (despite the lack of any sort of confidential watermark). I know many sites would be tripping over each other to get the scoop on this, unless of course they were already sitting on the official press release to publish at the proper date and time... -

Does look like a new mold! Not the first time we've seen it, though... It definitely works better for gold than the crystal pieces they had previously used—real gold just doesn't form a crystal structure like that!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Store employees get access to early information to better prepare them for questions from customers, and for the set launch itself. They've been known to let information like that slip before official reveals several times in the past, so it's nothing out of the ordinary here (especially if, as some people have alleged, the official reveal is happening this coming week). As for whether they're "allowed"... as long as that information can't be traced to them specifically by their workplace and name, it's not like they'd be at risk of any major repercussions. Things like retailer catalogs and confidential documents are a different matter, since they're often marked in ways to be able to determine their specific source if they should leak. -
Lego Re-releases - What would you like to see?
Lyichir replied to ElectroDiva's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Disney/Marvel/Sony apparently did. -
To be honest, one thing I'd particularly like to see is a Knightonia Coliseum set. Not only is it a key location in the story, and a potentially awesome subject for a set (lord knows Lego likes joust sets), but it'd also be a great setting for a final battle... with things ending "where they all began".

In this case I imagine they were used because of the "Wu Cru" logo on the back—this polybag seems to go with the previous Wu Cru polybags, but it seems they opted for the newer torsos with the specific branding instead of the older "throwback" suits used for the previous two Wu Cru polybags. It doesn't hurt that the training gi is not character specific and as such can be used for any of the ninja.

Sure. Here is the "tribal flame", which resembles a smaller flame piece introduced in the same wave of Chima sets and comes in three two-color blends: https://brickset.com/parts/design-18396 And here is the sword from the Sky Guardian, which was only ever used in that one set and had a transparent core (which in the set itself was also stickered): https://brickset.com/parts/design-57912

I would not rush to assume that the existence of a large blade piece like that implies that it is intended for Constraction. It could clearly be useful for that, but there have been several examples of parts like that that were first introduced for System themes and never even ended up appearing in Constraction at all (such as the large "tribal flame" pieces from Chima, Ninjago, and Elves, or the sword from the Exo-Force Sky Guardian).

Okay. What are we supposed to discuss? Do you want us to share our own ideas, or comment on yours? The latter is hard without a direct link to your concepts—not everyone knows where to find you on Lego.com or Twitter. Also, Ninjago discussion goes in the Action Themes subforum, since it's not an externally licensed property.

72004 Tech Wizard Showdown Pictorial Review
Lyichir replied to DuckBricks's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I'm talking about the parts on the reverse side of the triple Nexo Power shield on the front. I had not been aware of a 2x2 version of that inverse bow element—only the 1x2 version introduced last year. I would be interested in seeing that part on its own, if possible.- 28 replies

Technic 2018 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What? The cost of introducing a recolor is negligible compared to that of a new mold. The only expense of recolors are logistical costs like storing elements and time lost while changing the color used in a particular molding machine (both factors that are offset by retiring an older element every time a new one is put into production). A new precision-engineered steel mold, on the other hand, represents a huge cost that can only be earned back over the "lifetime" of the mold's use. It is a shame that the new pins don't snap into pinholes quite as well as the time-tested 2M pins and friction pins, but given the upfront cost of creating such useful new molds in the first place (ones I'm quite grateful for for the building opportunities they create), we probably won't see those minor flaws corrected at least until the current molds wear out. -

I dunno, I like the color schemes. It's worth noting that the colors shared by all the knights haven't actually gotten too much more complex, since they used to all share both Earth Blue and Bright Blue. As of this year, the latter has mostly disappeared except for from vehicles that are not aligned with any individual knight, to make way for Bright Orange being added and the knights' main colors to become more prominent. If anything, I actually prefer the replacement of Bright Orange with Warm Gold in next year's sets—I feel like it looks a lot better as its own color, rather than seeming like a somewhat poor match to the Trans. Fluor. Reddish Orange.

The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
For what it's worth, the Fun at the Beach dolphin is NOT the same as the Friends one. It's slightly more angular, and, bizarrely, lacks a blowhole. That said, I much prefer the new City one to the Paradisa one, which had way fewer useful connection points and holes for eyes instead of more soulful prints. -
It's not so much that it's based on a single feature that isn't replicated in any other software as it is that most other software I've tried falls short with one feature or another. Bricksmith lacks simple part snapping, requiring me to nudge most parts into place manually along three axes—far too inefficient for me to resort to on any larger MOCs. Mecabricks requires way too many keyboard shortcuts for me to easily keep track of, and takes much, much longer than LDD to browse parts (I imagine in part due to being a browser-based tool instead of an independently-running program). Stud.io is one of the best I've worked with, but it can't flex chains and similar parts the way LDD can, and its database being based on Bricklink's is both a blessing and a curse—parts lists are often organized poorly and cluttered with minor part variations. Of those three, Stud.io is the only one to feature more than a paltry selection of Constraction parts. Obviously, given its advantages and the kinds of things I build, it emerges as the clear winner, but I still prefer LDD's interface, and none of them can match the "glory days" of LDD, when new parts were added extremely promptly after new releases.

I've definitely grown more used to using alternative software like Stud.io, Bricksmith, and Mecabricks since LDD stopped updating regularly. Doesn't mean doing so has ever become less of a chore. I have yet to find a digital building software that is as user-friendly and captures the fun of real-life building quite as well as LDD. So while I definitely have alternative options if I want to put together a functional file using newer parts (and some of the others have additional benefits like Stud.io's direct integration with Bricklink), they're still pale substitutes.
