TLG doesn't have rigorously higher parts quality anymore. That's the first misconception. Other brands have very varying parts quality, most have worse, some are close or the same (GoBricks, Oxford) and admittedly one (Cobi) is better in most aspects. That's the second misconception. What TLG usually does better overall is more thoroughly designed and tested sets (and instructions) which in all likelihood will be reflected in both the TLG OE and the Mould King OE. That's the third misconception by most only comparing boxart and accompanying artwork.

Video from this year's model railroading event at The Danish Museum of Science & Technology in the city of Elsinore where our LTC participated. The trainset can be seen from around the 7:00 minute mark. It's actually two trainsets coupled together for the first time. One in the original white and red livery used from 1989 to 2002 and one in the newer white and dark blue livery used from 2002 to today. The two trainset utilized 4 PU train motors and 4 PU AAA battery boxes all linked together within a custom build in the PU app. The newer livery: The newer trainset is once again (fictionally) named - this time 'Torben Plagborg' with the city crest of Grindsted added as homage:

[MOC] DSB Litra EA (8-wide electric locomotive)
dtomsen replied to dtomsen's topic in LEGO Train Tech
The magnetic coupler sections have been reworked successfully for a long time now and the locomotive has been tested thoroughly without any further issues. A very reliable and smooth running locomotive Short video from our recent LTC summer meeting:- 13 replies

One train motor and one battery box in each of the two powercars linked and controlled together by the system you choose. PU or PF with BuWizz/SBrick/PFx Brick can all do this. And should have more than sufficient power for 7 cars.
-
I think you'll find the rotational speed of the Technic motors much too slow for a Talgo even with upgearing or extra voltage provided by solutions such as BuWizz battery boxes, NiZn rechargeable batteries etc. Train motors would be a better fit in that regard in my opinion.

Togklodsen’s LEGO model railroad exhibition took place at The Danish Railway Museum in the city of Odense, 2-5 June 2023. The museum had around 1200 guests during the three days our exhibition was open to the public which is twice the number the museum usually has. We had already been told that more guests weren’t their main goal but it was nevertheless very nice. Even though the exhibition was taxing with three public days manned from 9-16 we all had a thoroughly wonderful time at the museum. The exhibition was a huge success. Reactions and feedback from the quests and staff alike were phenomenal. So much so that the museum has invited us back next year All in all, a truly satisfying farewell to my Odense Banegård moc and its long journey which began so unfortunately in 2020. The train station is now in the process of being disassembled - for real this time - but the train platform will survive and go on being displayed at future events (maybe as part of a new smaller'ish train station). Winner Best Individual Display, Europe. Brick Train Awards 2020. More photos from the exhibition here and here.

With the station rebuilt (and slightly expanded) in anticipation of the exhibtion at The Danish Railway Museum I had the chance to bring it along for another Danish Model Railroad Union "Modeltog for Alle" event as one of our centerpieces Photo © Peder Svend Pedersen 2023

Crazy test drive through several R40 switches in a row at our national Danish RLUG event Klodsfest 2023 My DSB Litra EA (8-wide) electric locomotive couldn't handle that combination of R40 switches - but no spectacular show worthy derailments tho

In my opinion the all-plastic design is barely "just good enough" and far from the motto "the best is not good enough" Why settle for an obviously inferior solution with all the many and better options available? Mind you, metal axles don't cut it either without ball bearings (and teflon spray) for most of my long and heavy wagons especially the passenger ones close to 1 kg

1) Low to none but who knows. If the museum wants to buy my station it's no longer impossible as all parts are mine now (a story for another day). The amount wouldn't be trivial though. 2) Not much can be seen in the photo so I can't really check out what locomotive it is. Sorry.

The perfect exhibition avenue continued... Our LTC (LEGO Train Club) Togklodsen has officially been invited to host an LEGO model railroad exhibtion at The Danish Railway Museum 2-5 June 2023. 5th of June being the Danish Consitution Day. In my modest opinion the finest avenue possible and more so as the museum is in Odense, my city of birth, hometown for 40 years and situated on the exact opposite side of the tracks of Odense Banegård

[MOC] DSB Litra EA (8-wide electric locomotive)
dtomsen replied to dtomsen's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Short video of the first real testing at Togklodsens biannual club meeting: A bit misleading because... 1) A really hard to spot misalignment in the gearing of one the two motors made the whole locomotive run...not very well at first even though it did run. Basically one L motor was pulling the whole lot with the second motor dragging more than helping. When finally found and fixed, the combined drivetrain worked really well. As it should. 2) The magnet couplers section fell of periodically. Basically a not robust enough construction irl even though looking mighty fine on paper with four studs holding it together! Back to the drawing board with that one needing major rework. A classic example of one of the major pitfalls of digital designing Everything else was good or even great. The rather compact locomotive is one delightful heavy machine. Pulls really well and surprisingly smooth despite not so great BTD 3d printed MS wheels which would likely be too wobbly on a lighter frame. As usually molded parts would be much much better. All in all a typical DSB debut- 13 replies

[MOC] DSB Litra EA (8-wide electric locomotive)
dtomsen replied to dtomsen's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Thanks but the usage kind of bothered me though and I came up with another much more simple and neat looking solution irl 🙂 The bars are almost flush with the frame so one claw per bar seems sufficient enough too.- 13 replies

[MOC] DSB Litra EA (8-wide electric locomotive)
dtomsen replied to dtomsen's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Actually the DSB litra EA has only been released as an extremely limited one-off model train in 2009 by a local Danish speciality brand. Never before or since. The one main advantage of LEGO trains. If we really want a specific model, we can relatively easy build one ourselves whenever we desire- 13 replies

After a fairly long hiatus designing any new rolling stock it's time to present another one of my Danish State Railways’ (DSB) locomotives redone to 8-wide and digitally rendered. DSB Litra EA The Danish State Railways' (DSB) first electric locomotive was built by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel, Germany (the first two) and Scandia, Denmark (the remaining ones). 22 were built in total from 1984 to 1992. 1 was scrapped. 16 were sold to Bulgaria and Romania from 2007 to 2010 and 4 to Bulmarket in Bulgaria in 2021. The last remaining one (EA 3004) was transferred to The Danish Railway Museum in 2020. Wiki here and irl photo here. My model: DSB 'modern' red & black livery used in the 1980s. Scale: 1:46 Length: 54 studs from buffer to buffer Width: 8 studs Bricks: 1.397 (BuWizz), 1.403 (PU) or 1.401 (PF) Weight: 996g (without battery box) Locomotion: 2 x L-motors (BuWizz & PF) or 2 x M-motors (PU) Power: 1 x BuWizz 2.0 or 1 x AAA PF/PU battery box Control: BuWizz, PU or SBrick Designed: 2023 It has the serial number EA 3024 and is named 'O K Kristiansen' My 6-wide DSB Litra EA from 2011. All renders are from Stud.io with custom decals done in the PartDesigner tool.

[MOC] Renfe Ave 100 (MOC/Modification of a BlueBrixx set)
dtomsen replied to Ferro-Friki's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Congratulations with your new and imo improved MOC/MOD and the journey you have embarked upon. Looking forward to what's next -
The train station was shown again to the public for a third and supposedly final time at the annual Danish Model Railroad Union event "Modeltog for Alle" held October last year in the city of Kolding. The event was postponed for two and a half years due to Covid and the very same which was cancelled a few weeks before the station was supposed to debut. After the event the dreaded disassembly process commenced Fortunately the process has gone painstakingly slow with the station only partial disassembled because a few days ago the perfect exhibition avenu became possible - very much to my wife's chagrin To be continued...

Do you tend to stick to your nationality?
dtomsen replied to LordsofMedieval's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Yes, I primarily make Danish trains. I think it's part familiarity, part nostalgia and part national pride coming from a small country. I have nothing against trains from other countries or regions of the world and especially fancy German ones with their rich train heritage. Nobody except myself is holding me back from making trains from other countries though and neither should anyone. I love it when someone bothers to make Danish trains. Nationality plays no part in that 🙂 Regarding trains from LEGO I have pretty much no preference and will buy whatever train set comes along as long as it looks good, realistic and is well-made. Unfortunately it seldom does 😁 -
