  1. Ummmmmmmm... I can't say I've ever found stunning deals at a consistent rate, but a few have stuck out in my mind. Mostly Value Village scores [which is a second hand store, in case that wasn't obvious]. I got Studios 1354 DIno Head Attack sealed for I think 3 bucks, and Creator 5867 in a crunched but unopened box for 4 bucks. I also found a 3431 2 vs 2 Basketball missing I think 3 pieces and with no minifigs [but it had the instructions] for, again, perhaps 3 bucks. Random other stuff, too, like another Tauntaun. I was very psyched the day I got 8061 Gateway of the Squid for 10 bucks on a Black Thursday sale at Walmart. Best find I think, though, was 8089 Hoth Wampa Cave for 15 bucks thanks to a mis-stickerage. That was the best.
  2. Thanks. Doing animal stuff is always a bit of extra complication with LEGO, and cutting the parts pool down made this a fun challenge.
  3. Thanks for the good reviews so far, going off of only that obfuscated image. I found a workable camera [not great, but workable] and also spent the time rebuilding this guy in LDD. I thought there'd be more illegal connections in it, but it turns out he's pretty much above-board, with only a few collision issues. Anyway, here are 'better' pictures: I don't love his feet, but I was working with what was available. As mentioned above, this was made using exclusively parts from Ferocious Creatures, Creator set 5868. There are 10 pieces unused, I think. Some notes on the LDD version, if anyone's brave enough to try it: the eyes fit in real life, but not digitally, apparently. Also, there a small brown jump plate behind his neck to stabilize the head angle that LDD didn't allow, and the short string in the set, which isn't an option in LDD, is threaded around inside his head to give support to the rather unstable tentacles.
  4. So I picked up the 5868 Ferocious Creatures Creator set a few days ago, because it has lots of green in it, and green is a pretty colour. And I wanted to use it to make a Cthulhu. It was a bit more challenging than I anticipated. Who knew tentacles might be hard to do in LEGO? Still, I'm please with the results. Especially considering my self-imposed limited parts pool. Here's the only photo I was able to capture before losing my sanity [read: camera died]. I'll post better shots when I get the camera working again. He's goofy but lovable. Lemme know what ya think! Oh, and here's the non-futzed-with picture if you care to see it.
  5. Hey, all right. In honour of Underwater Month, I'm going to pull the trigger on my personal challenge of the month: Make a convincing Cthulhu using only the parts in 5868 Ferocious Creatures. That's pretty underwatery, I think.
  6. Fascinating stuff. What's more interesting, there's the Bata Shoe Museum here in town [Toronto] that, honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if they housed something like this. If you used your techniques here and recreated some classic, iconic footwear, they'd probably be all over that. But yeah. On paper this seems like such a silly thing to have done with LEGO, but the results are really nice. LEGO is the best artistic medium, man.
  7. I really like that... I have a pretty low-rent brick-built shelf thing, but that looks pro. I dig.
  8. Up in the kid's section, on the wall with the LEGO. There's sort of a smaller section with drawers of littler stuff back towards the corner. There were a bunch there, although it may only have been a case. I'm sure they'll get put in the larger displays where previous series have been shortly.
  9. Series 5 CMFs also at the Eaton Centre Indigo, so they're probably going to be at most Chapters or whatever stores now or soon. They're $3.50 each there. I spent a couple of minutes groping the bags and scored a perfect 17 for 17 [2 boxers]. So that's neat! It's a good looking set. I just wish the Fitness Instructor's hair were a different colour.
  10. Is this too beyond what's being asked for? Here's the LXF file. I'd a made it brown, but some of those parts don't seem to exists in brown in non-Extended mode, which I thought was important.
  11. This is a really attractive set. Were older LEGO not so prohibitively expensive, I'd probably add this to the list to buy. Aw well!
  12. You gotta LDD this if you get the time, because I'd love to make my own. That thing is almost perfect at that scale. EDIT: I got impatient and tried it myself in LDD. No idea how accurate it is in terms of how you actually built it, though. That upsidesey downsey rear fender took more brain power than I'm used to [i'm strictly up-and-down, man]. I was going to post a picture of it, but this thing isn't letting me.
  13. I got 4 big buckets of "LEGO" at the Value Village the other day, for a pretty sweet deal [and then I found 20 bucks on the bus, but that's neither here nor there]. I dumped it all in the tub to wash of the gunge [some of it was mildewey... how does that even happen?] and it essentially sorted out to three buckets of good, basic, standard stuff [and most of the parts of 6394, which is cool] and a bucket of Megablox. Looks like two of those Dinosaur sets they made a while back. Tons of about three different colours, that are not standard to LEGO. Still, OCD prevents me from using them, so I let them dry, repacked them into a bucket, and will re-donate them back to said Value Village.
  14. As always, I remain baffled by the pricing difference between the US and Canada, but I am gonna get this set with no further questions.
  15. Ooh, these are always fun, but such a warzone sometimes. Around Halloween they had baggies mad up, which was simple and fast, but then so was the model [more of a pumpkin cookie than anything else]. The Mother's Day flower was a much more satisfying model [and really quite huge, all things considered] but it was insane with all the grabbing little hands all over the place, and the bricks weren't out yet, and me standing there like a knob, clearly the oldest dude in the room. Aw well, free LEGO! The plane looks little, but pretty neat. I will definitely try and make it tomorrow.
  16. I'm getting the Post Office, that goes without saying. But that van is boss. I had no interest in it before, but seeing it there, man... I'm happy it's gonna be so expensive, because that might be the only thing keeping me from getting it.
  17. I completely agree. I mean, the core of the robots is actually a pretty complicated structure to figure out, with some neat topsey-sidesey building and fairly "advanced" stuff. But then so much of it is slapdash and rushed and weird. I'm looking at these not so much as finished models, like I treat LEGO, but rather as challenges to be overcome.
  18. Here's my thoughts on Prowl, should you care to read them!
  19. I'm fairly certain Yonge and Eglinton TRU had all the new Star Wars sets on... Friday, I think? I didn't get any, 'cause that stuff is expensive, but they had them.
  20. Oy, there goes the rest of my money. I'm gonna hafta resurrect my old and stored C3/Minimates Batcave as a method of not buying the inevitable LEGO Batcave... but everything else. Yeah. Me poor now.
  21. I hate seeing pictures of the Holiday Train, because I try so hard to convince myself it doesn't exist. Anyway, the post office looks nice. Very nice. The gazebo is cool, as is the truck. All instruments are good instruments.
  22. I've done a bit of a review on three Kre-O sets, trying to look at them from the perspective of a LEGO fan and a Transformers fan in equal measure. Have a look if you're interested, and feel free to voice an opinion here as well. Kre-O: The Perfect Storm?
  23. To be honest, I'm not sure how mine has garnered any votes, but there ya go. Here are the ones that jumped out at me, and each get a point: 14) Punk Rocker Entry (Build by kost u grlu) 20) Artist Entry (Build by lisqr) 42) Surfer Girl Entry (Build by SugarConroy) I think I'm a sucker for tiny mosaics. And the motion of the wave is fetching.
  24. I assume they're wildly out of scale, but I'd be interested in seeing Mario next to a standard minifigure. I'd be curious, but I don't know if I'd pull the trigger on any of these. Maybe if/when a Toad set comes out, 'cause he was always my favorite character.
  25. Wouldn't be unprecedented. This new LEGO part was a BTR part from at least 2003, afterall. There's probably more.
