Heroica RPG - Quest#13: The Darkstar
Rumble Strike replied to Rumble Strike's topic in The Heroica Archive
Sorrow watched Guts walking in front of her. She was pleased with his initiative and his willingness to do what was necessary. Of the party, he was definitely one to nuture. Vres breathed heavily as Dak aided him. "Laxadaisi has gems, and potions, and... other magical items", he replied. "I do not... know if this gem you seek ...is among them, but it would be a good place to look." -

With her Elvishly acute reading of people, Nerwen notices that Sorrow looks up with interest when Vres starts talking about the mysterious sickness infecting Ve'er. The black-haired woman remained silent though, letting the party make their own decisions. Vres looks at Sarick with gratitude as he wipes the blood away. "Thank you, uh... kind sir. My wife has been... at the magic shop... for several years. The owner is.. Laxadaisi Velomptromp... I guess... with a name like that... she was going to... go into magic... or maybe the circus..." Vres coughs after making his little joke, but it was a good sign that he trusted the party after their efforts to question him humanely. After several members of the party state their intention to visit the medicine man in the Hovels, Vres says that he can show them where he is. At this, Sorrow steps in. "If you are sure this wretch is telling the truth, perhaps it would be wise to allow him to show us where this so-called medicine man is. There is a warren of shopfronts in the Hovels, none of them legal or pleasant." The group leave the makeshift prison area and step out into the murky gloom of Eubric's Hovels once again. Vres Halpo, assisted by the Rogue Dak, takes the lead with Sorrow gliding silently at the rear. -
Winston goes to Alex's briefcase and tries to turn on the cellphone to see what calls/texts have been made. Much to his annoyance, he can't do it. "Uh, Amber or someone, can you help me with this? Blasted newfangled technology. This is why I prefer ancient artifacts!"

Dak, it's fine, I wanted to cause a bit of discord within the party Hope you're all enjoying it so far.

Sorrow let out a small laugh as Guts and Knifk started playing "Good cop/Bad cop". A stream of blood matted the side of the prisoners face as he shook his head, then tried to answer the Knight's diplomatic questions. "My name is... Vres Halpo and my wife is called... Jui. We don't have... any children. We live in a small village called Ve'er about two... days travel from Eubric." He paused as blood ran down his neck. "My wife started getting sick... several seasons ago... She had been working... in the magic shop... in Ve'er... but she came down with... a mystery illness. No-one knows... what's causing it. Since then... others have... gotten sick. There is an... unlicensed medicine man... here in Eubric... that sells me special tonics... that help my wife, and the others..." He looks inconsolable. "Without that medicine... I don't know what... state she will be in. I have... failed them all." -

"Fine", harrumps Sorrow, "we'll see how the Orc gets on with his diplomacy..." The prisoners eyes opened wider as the large Orc got closer to him, then he seemed to settle down as the Knight's words were heard. "I don't know anything about a gem... I don't know why this crazy lady thinks I do... I just travelled from my village to Eubric to get the medicine..." "You definitely know something or I would not have had you brought to me!" snaps Sorrow. "Keep questioning him!" -
"Hi Deputy Scott. No, we didn't find anything at all. I hope we find some clues or evidence at the Jordans. I feel we are just stumbling around blindly at the moment."
-
That is understandable. Thank you for explaining your reasoning.

Dak tries hard, concentrating on the tall woman who seems hell-bent on torturing the prisoner. But as hard as he tries, Dak cannot delve into Sorrow's mind at all. Sorrow fixes on Dak, her stare one of contempt. He hears her voice inside his own head try to get inside my mind again, half-breed, and it will be the last thing you do Dak gasps and takes 1 damage: Dak Nikolus (played by darthnihilus) Level 1 Rogue Power: 4 Health: 6/7 Gold: 0 Inventory: Twin Longswords (WP:3), Venom, 2 Potions, Bedroll -
Gotham City Mafia: Day One

Of all the people suspicious so far, I think Hush and Croc have been quite evasive in their reasoning behind voting, but it is always hard to go for more than "gut feeling" on Day One. I think it's clear that we as a Town should not be so quick to jump on the Riddler bandwagon. I thought he was suspicious before but to roleclaim the Investigator is again a bold move. I don't think we can risk losing him so like others I will: Unvote: The Riddler (sok117) There have been good arguments made against Catwoman by the Creeper and I will follow his and Baby Doll's lead on this as they are the ones who are really being proactive for us. Vote: Catwoman (CallMePieOrDie) Hopefully we will have something stronger than speculation to go on tomorrow. -
Winston asked, "Shall we head back to the others, or make a start on the Jordan's place?"

"So typical of the Elves, that abhorrant high-minded philosphy that you spout to appear far more intelligent than the other races. This, dear girl, is simply about getting things done. Yes, you are heroes of Heroica Hall. Yes, you are valiant and brave all that good stuff, if you were not, then I wouldn't have used your organisation. But sometimes sacrifices have to be made. Sometimes you have to use the world as it exists, not as you wish to see it. I have been hired by the Ziegfrieds, and in turn I have hired you. That is the chain of consequences. It begins here, with this wretched man. It ends at the Darkstar. That is the goal. I believe the phrase is, 'The ends justify the means.'" The tall, pale woman makes no attempt to move towards the prisoner. She stares back at Nerwen, unblinking. The prisoner sees this contest of wills. He implores the party: I... I was just off to, to get medicine for my wife. She, she is very ill. Then this crazy... woman captures me and now I am worried... that my wife... will die". The terror Dak felt earlier from the prisoner was not about his predicament. What will the party do? QM note - Nerwen cannot affect his health, it is sleep and food that he requires rather than actaul healing. I want to see what the others want to do about the prisoner, see if they will follow Nerwen's lead. -

As the heroes had yet to move towards the prisoner Sorrow sighed in annoyance. The prisoner once again spoke up, but he was clearly exhausted and scared. "Help me, my, my wife... she..." -
There have been several Quests now that have explicitly stated 'No Barbarians'. I don't know why that is, we are an under-represented class as it is.

Hah, nice reference Just because it didn't work this time doesn't mean it won't work in the future. It was a good idea and worth trying.

It is certainly acceptable to try ;)

Dak concentrates and feels waves of terror coming off of the man, but he can't get any coherent, specific thoughts from him due to his panicked, fearful state. The prisoner looks pleadingly at the heroes as they enter. "Help me, please!" -

The woman turns round quickly with an immense look of anger on her face, but then she softens slightly. "What would one expect from an Orc," she sneers in a haughty voice, and then looks at the party. "We are nearly at our destination. I will explain more when we arrive." With Sarick and Dak mindful of the locale they were in, the party continued, until they reached a non-descript building with barred windows. The woman paused here, and once again looked over the party, fixing them all with an icy glare. "You may call me Sorrow. I have been hired by the Zeigfrieds to help locate a gem of great mystical power; the legendary Darkstar. It is a gem of great significance that has been lost for many years." Her voice dropped to a whisper, "There are those who believe it was created by Zoot," she glanced off into the distance, and then refocused, "But now the Zeigfrieds want it in their possession. For... safekeeping. They don't want it falling into the wrong hands. Inside this building is someone who may know the location of the Darkstar. Consider this your audition to me; I would like you to get him to reveal what he knows." The party enter the building: A clearly terrified man is chained up. His clothes are filthy and a foul stench emanates from the room. Sorrow looms over him, a dark presence. What will the party do? -

Phew, this day is beginning to pick up pace. I still think that the Ventriloquist looked a bit scummy at the start, but maybe he was just genuinely trying to work out how many agents we are facing. I guess it can't be easy having that gangster sat on your knee all day. However after reading listening to you all I have to say Edward, you really are coming across as being too eager to work out how Baby Doll's abilities work. She's sticking her neck out for the criminals here. Vote: The Riddler (sok117 -

That's an interesting vote, Creeper. Any reason for it or just based on thread activity? -
I agree that a rough estimate of Quest length would be helpful for signups. Oh and Bioniclover, Gorg hasn't been selected, it's just your Orc.

Credit to Baby Doll for having the chops to put herself in the firing line like that. Most un-criminal-like! That's exactly what we criminals need though, someone bold enough to try and take charge. I'm just surprised it's a former child star.
