This really is a beautiful piece of art. The rust detailingon the AT-AT is very impressive. Is anyone else minded of the Tauntaun scene in ESB? There are a couple of pieces of concept art that appear to feature the ship hidden in the belly of the beast . . . I hope it is one of the new sets due in the winter release. (I'll repost this comment in the appropriate thread.)

YouTube is just screaming out for a remake of the carbonite scene with Minions instead of Ugnaughts . . . with the obvious consequence (poor Stuart).

When I MOC'd my SSD (yesyes, I know I still haven't posted it yet. . .) I made the mistake of not generating a spreadsheet to keep track of what I needed and what I had, and was forever double ordering or forgetting pieces only to find a Bricklink seller I used last week had the one piece I was missing this week. That model was designed and built without any LDD, and I created a photo reference building instructions (which I will use to recreate an LDD file at some point). So yes, absolutely generate a spreadsheet as with building something with 3K+ pieces you are going to lose track of something at some point. *Sigh*, . . . I bult my first Millennium Falcon when I was about 11, in nineteen seventy*AHEM*. Sadly no pictures exist, but it was at a time when the most exotic brick I had was a roof slope or a 2x2x1 1/4 round brick. So, yes, as long as the Lego company don't roll out another UCS version any time soon, I'll be scratch building a Falcon - after every other MOC project I have in the pipeline. The very best of success to you EddScott.

They both look fantastic. I'm currently selling a set of Stormtrooper Armour to fund my MOC habit (I was always too tall for it anyway) and a reworked Star Destroyer was always on my 'to-do' list, but at this scale I'd find it very hard to improve on what AitR and took9 have built here. *Hat-tip*

Very nice. You really captured the essence of a Tatooine style building. If anything, I would have suggested making the lower few layes of brics a darker colour (if you could find the right shade), particularly around the Dewback parking zone . . . with maybe a trash bin and a spade . . . and a little vegetable patch fretilized by, . . well, . . you know.

If you think about it, any 'window' is a structural weak point on a space faring vessel, and the pilot, particularly of a heavily armoured assault craft, need only have images projected onto a series of viewing screens. I mean, it's not like TIE fighters and X-wings were fitted with wing or rear view mirrors for dogfighting. I know it's about the aesthetic, but are you serously going to complain about the lack of windows when the scale and purpose of the craft is still uncertain. I'm looking forward to a new Infiltrator, hoping that it is a better model than previous versions. I'm new to collecting the SW Lego sets after having previously owned (then sadly had to part with) a number of early UCS sets so am picking up some older sets as I go, and 7961 doesn't look too bad compared to the earlier models. But I can see that the only way some people will be happy with any lego interpretation of any vehicle or ship is by creating a MOC. But MOCers can cheat in how they use the bricks. Anyone who has used LDD will tell that not everythign you can do with lego can be replicated on CAD (see my Speeder Bike thread), and if Lego company designers are limited to using an LDD tool for design then there will always be things that we can do on and to our own models that they cannot create 'virtually'.

Actually, I think you're right. I wasn't thinking clearly in terms of studs and scale. When you look at it like that this really is a large model. I guess the interior will be about 4 studs wide at the front as the hull is 'plated', so thats about 2 studs thickness for each wall.
-
I think we are starting to see that more often now anyway, but particularly on the larger sets. I agree that there appears to be limited space for minifigures inside, but the other thing I spotted is, if you look very closely at the trailer, the wings on that ship do not appear to extend below the fuselage. It looks like astriaght forward shallow "V", So either the ship has been designed with an uneccesarily complicated wing function (not Lego's fault) or . . . this is not the ship you are looking for. But it is hard to imagine two similar ships being produced. On an aesthetic/practical front, I think the bad guys personal ship will be more sleek. Too much big wing makes it an easy target in battles. So I'm leaning towards this being some kind of personal shuttle vessel instead - but that's more of a film rather than Lego observation. And as for the "stud" question. I like studs and I think Lego like them too, because you can build much more stuff with studs than without. Your smoother outlines should be reserved more for the UCS type builds that people are less likely to break up for spares at some point.

To save me valuable LDD CAD time, can anyone point me in the dirtection of a good information source, either a book or online, of ship dimensions and even cut-aways. I'm trying to build USC scale models to the same scale as the recent TIE and Slave 1, which appear to be to correct minifig scale (please, someone, correct me if I'm wrong in that assumption),or at least to a common unit scale. A Sith Infiltrator is also on my "to-do" list.

I thought maybe I'd seen Yoda on some boxes (I'm only recently restarted collecting), but you have to admit that since they featured a character in the TRH corner it's been variations of Darth Vader (Ep IV to VI sets?) and Darth Maul (Ep I to III) and Stormtrooper or Clone Troopers - and yeah, okay, there are quite a few Yoda imagesout there (just checked). And the new Sith villain [no names - no pack drill] is slated to appear on boxes later this year, I believe.

I spent about 20+ hours over the last two days, working with Lego Digital Designer to create a CAD file of my Speeder Bike. And here are the results: SpeederBike-F1 by neil cook All theviews are, perforce, exploded and look incomplete because of the limitations of LDD to twist, bend or otherwise 'misuse' (i.e. things like going 'studs first' into the side of a technic brick) parts, and where the program gives a tollerance or allowance for clearance of parts and refused to let me move assemblies closer together (the 'crack' in the engine block) where I know they do fit, which resulted in a significant redisignof some parts. SpeederBike-F2 by neil cook Not completely happy with the stand and it was too short, as I recall to operate the foot pedals properly, but when I get round to rebuilding it and listing sets on eBay later this year (proposing a limited run of maybe half a dozen) I will sort out all the little re-designs. The original was completed in a bit of a hurry because of my work schedule (working extra shifts during the 2012 Olympic Games). SpeederBike-F3 by neil cook The blue elastic band seen near the centre of the model is part of the foot-rest and rear vent operating system, but LDD limitations meant I couldn't move it into position. Likewise with the hoses. In the instructions I will make additional notes on where these items should go, though some of it is fairly intuitive. SpeederBike-F4 by neil cook The foot pedals are a good case in point for all the limitations of LDD (not complaining, BTW) as there was a hose/flexi rod that I couldn't bend to position, another connecting part that wouldn't turn far enough to allow me to connect all the pins and axles (see RHS of model), and some parts of the assembly needed to be 'flexed' (distorting the natural shape minimaly) into position. Only about 4 types of part are not in the LDD catalogue - the scanner dial, typically - so untested substitutions have been made, but when building the sets I will purchase the 'correct' parts in some cases. Oh, and my estimate of "over 600 parts" when I started this thread? . . . Waaaaay off! According to the brick count on LDD, over 1200 bricks and about 98-100 studs long.

More likely they have been working on it since before the official take-over/purchase, and we will see the results of the marketing team. If they leave it until after TFA to start they aren't a very good team. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see more images coming out alongside any TFA promor material as it tells you there is more to the live action SW universe than just the movies.

On the subject of the packaging (sorry to take this directing in this thread), ever wonder why it is the villain that appears in the top RH corner of the box, and hardly ever [edited from "never" when Artizan pointed out Yoda is on some boxes] a hero. Not complaining, but just wondering. I'm another one who thinks the Disney logo is unobtrusive. Look at the Marvel sets too, they have their logo on, so why not Disney? Although I admit that packaging is important and I like that the image is clearly representative of the actual contents and not some stylized depiction of how you imagine the contents look (like in the cartoons . . . and minifigs with "knees"). However, the day they put a cartoon image on the front of the box that does not reflect the true lines of the contents, I shall write a sternly worded letter to the Guardian newspaper!

Last night I decided to give LDD a try, called a halt at 2am, then started again at 9am and have been building for about 12 hours now. Last week I told some people that I was planing to CAD my UCS scale Speeder bike. I'm about 90-95% done with just the 'assembly' to do - which will proabalby take me another day because of getting hinges and plates to agree to line up. The flexi-hoses I'm leaving alone as there is no possible way to wind them like my original. Full notes when I post the completed results. Next project likely to be a CAD build of a UCS scale Vader TIE Fighter, then a series of TIE Fighter variants to the same scale as the TIE Advanced Prototype (75082). Maybe after that I will CAD the photo build notes of my SSD Executor. [i wish LDD had a "mirror" function.]

. . . *Sniff* . . . Still wiping tears from my eyes from when I read "Rouge One" . . . I thought for a minute I was in the wrong forum.

I called the MK Lego shop again on Saturday. They seem to rigidly stick to their release dates, even though there is a TRU and Smyths outlet in the same town and both (?) have Summer stock on the shelves - although I've only seen a Smythswith stock, no TRUs so far (see my comment in a different thread). I am waiting for the Lego shop to get the Imperial Shuttle in as I want the VIP points, and everyone appears to be selling them at the RRP anyway so there's nothing to be gained by going elsewhere if you have a Lego store nearby.

Thanks everyone. iceman, I spent a lot of time referencing airfix and hasbro models, film photos and Star Wars books to try and get the proportions just right I always imagined that the front 'forks' seemed too short, but all my research indicared that those were the proportions (within a stud or two). I am looking and re-engineering this, possibly later this year, and maybe selling a few sets through eBay around Xmas time. I will include tiles in the new version, so that builders have the option of with or without. I have quite a few SW Lego projects in the pipeline, at the moment, so I'll have to see how I get along with the CAD this week . . . though to be honest I do enjoy the "hands-on" approach to design much more.
-
This appears to be an online offer only. If you spend less than £29.99 then you pay for shipping, which effectively cancels out the 'free' gift. And you can only put one figure in your basket. I'm going to phone a local TRU this morning to see if it is an in-store offer too as I purchased £34 of SW Lego in Bolton yesterday and no free gift was handed over.

Without wanting to drop any Ep VII spoilers in case people like me are studiously avoiding the leaks or not even watching the trailers before the film release - I hope they UCS the new 'bad guy's' personal ship soon (if it's any good). We've had two TIE Fighters, Vader's Advanced TIE, Slave 1, and two X-Wing (etc.) - the point being that major villains get their ship in UCS (except for Darth Maul ). So a UCS Sith Infiltrator is long overdue. But I would like to see a new UCS Millennium Falcon based on the new film version.

With too many things to do I haven't managed to find the time to properly watch Rebels, but looking at this representation of the ship alone, I must make time. This looks like a very nice job. I hope you get the interior details that you want sorted out and look forward to your updates. I particularly like the folding engine bay detail at the back.

I've been in four branches of T"R"U this week and never once seen these items. I purchased over £30 of SW lego at a store in Bolton today and wasn't offered one either. It must be brand new on their site because when I looked online a couple od days ago, comparing prices against Tesco, I'd swear that it wasn't there then. I'm going to try another local(ish) one tomorrow and update whether I find any of the Summer sets there.
-
Not long back from my site visit today (complete success, thanks for asking), and visited several T"R"U outlets on the way home, looking for the summer releases.. Bolton - Nada. Leeds - Zilch. Wakefield - Goose egg. Meadowhall/Sheffield - Rien . . both at T"R"U and the Lego Store there. Somewhere near Chesterfield (south of Sheffield) . . . couldn't find the T"R"U but found a Smyths Toystore . . . *Fanfare* 20150523_120630[1] by 20150523_120604[1] by , on Flickr Oh, and BTW . . . I'm about 6'3" and was looking up to photograph the Imperial shuttle and Assault Ship, and I'm standing there wondering WTH could be in that display case nearly a foot above my head?
-
Hi Hulk_Smash. Which Toymaster did you go to? When I asked at me local stores (few and far between) they hadn't hear of this promotion. Another member of this Forum very kindly offered to send me a couple of spares that he had (for my two lads).

Anyone who has a Tesco Clubcard may want to go to the Tesco Direct site PDQ as they have 1000 bonus loyalty points if you spend £60 and over. That's the equivalent of £10 cashback in vouchers . . . and if you save them until the winter 'double up', they could be worth £20. Several sets are currently on offer, and if you use the right combinations of purchases you can get away with just tipping £60 (e.g. TIE advanced @ £32 and Snowspeeder @ £28).

Do you mean like a cheese shop that is 'uncontaminated by cheese'* "nothing", of just that they had none of the new sets that other people keep spotting? Maybe Milwaukee should be twinned with Bedford. I'm working on Saturday up near Manchester and can pass at least three T"R"U on the way home. I'll let you all know if I spot any of the new stuff. BTW, when someone says, "My local T"R"U has...", in the future, please say what your local store is. [*Okay, hands up how many people got the "cheese" reference.]
