  1. 15. Steampunk Clock An unnecessarily complicated clock The clock features an "hours", "minutes" and "seconds" indicator, separated by another "sort-of-seconds" indicator, similar to those found on digital clocks. Inside, a lot of gears and mechanisms to move everything, including a Geneva drive to move the hours indicator and a Scotch yoke to move the separator. WIP photo's and more close-up photo's of the mechanisms can be found in my Bricksafe folder and in the discussion topic: Thanks for watching!
  2. I'm done Can someone confirm if the video is ok? On my computer it shows show green distortion...
  3. You're right about the mismatch of the blue. I was thinking the same, but I don't have a white one. But then I realised that 8868 has some nice tanks Fits nicely, I think: There's a video a few posts up that has the mechanism with sound; it hasn't changed since, only aesthetics. I think that this will be my final submission: make some nice photo's and a video in the weekend and I'm just in time
  4. Very original, I like it. I love how people are trying really hard to not build a car for this contest!
  5. I think I know what @BrickbyBrickTechnic means: I kind of tack stuff on there to add some color. I try again, your comments again much appreciated, of course!
  6. I'm not convinced of the clock face, it detracts a bit of the technical awesomeness... But cool entry anyway! You might want to put your submission post in the entry topic instead of the information topic
  7. I found a few brown pieces from a Creator set I once bought... Is this the direction to go with, or I'm I doing it all wrong?
  8. Good point regarding the gold and brown... I don't think I have any gold parts, but I'll check. I have a few brown parts that I might be able to use. Thanks for the feedback!
  9. I like @Didumos69 suggestions for the steampunk theme. I'm not very good at styling things, but I gave it a shot. What do you guys think? (sorry for the bad lighting in the photo's... it's quite dark here)
  10. This is awesome, I love it! 3 hours is insane! How accurate is it? How is the pendulum suspended if it's not just a simple axle? I see it now, with those bionicle teeth thingies.
  11. I like the white (first) version best. Perhaps making the nose also white, do you have good contrast with the wheels and seat. Might be worth to LDD it and play with colors? I agree with the others: really cool pullback. Looks like an official set!
  12. So... I thought about a lot of ideas. Chess-clock, jack-in-the-box, etc. Finally, I came up with... a clock I tried something else: a mix of a digital and analog clock, so I could incorporate a lot of different mechanisms. Let's say it's "art deco" The large number on the left is supposed to be the hour indicator. It's driven by a Geneva drive in the back of the clock. On the right are the minutes (long hand) and seconds (short hand). There's 4 minutes in an hour and 3 seconds in a minute. Doesn't make a lot of sense, but all the mechanisms require quite a bit of power and with more gearing I had to wind up the pullback multiple times to complete an "hour". The current gearing is a trade-off for visual appeal In between the "hours" and the "minutes/seconds" is another second indicator that is supposed to be reminiscent of those found on digital clocks. It's driven by a Scotch yoke. Technically everything works, as you can see in the video. The "packaging" needs some work though, but I have some time left, I learned. What do you guys think? Any suggestions for finishing the housing?
  13. It looks really cool on the wall Looks a bit like the one I have hanging here (also just has a face with all the gears exposed). Is it with one or two pullbacks? Can't remember if you proceeded with integrating both.
  14. You made some great progress! The 3 hands are ingenious and the overall looks are clean and robust. Very curious to see the final entry I see the new pull-back motor works a lot more steady than the old one I have. Mine shows quite a bit of slowing-down: I had about 10 minutes of autonomy, but during that time it slowed down by >10% (measured by counting seconds/turn of the output). I ended up ditching the whole clock idea because of this. With respect to the wind-up mechanism: I put the lock/ratchet on the differential housing, instead of on the axle as you have. In this way, you can wind-up without interfering with the hand motion. This can perhaps simplify your setup? You can see it in my (crappy) video:
  15. Maybe something like this can be done with only studless?
  16. That did the trick indeed, as you can see in the second video...
  17. Wow, this is very very cool! The chrome works really well, especially in the tail lights! I think the seats could maybe be a bit more in style, instead of the Technic liftarms, but that's nitpicking.
  18. Thanks, @Rudivdk I now also have a ratchet that allows to wind up the pull-back. Accidentally, I reversed the gear direction (due to the differential). It still seems to work, but I think the other direction works better. Now to figure what to do with this concept... Clock or something else...
  19. I have one of the old pull-back motors, which, as @Aventador2004 noticed, unwind really, really fast. I quickly realised that if I wanted to build anything but a car, I needed something to let it unwind in a controlled manner. For example, an escapement, like in a clock. Unfortunately, @Didumos69 posted his topic while I was working on my proof-of-concept. I guess there's no rule against having the same idea, but I'll think about if I want to build a clock or something else from it Anyway: here's a proof-of-concept to show that the idea works. I shamelessly borrowed one of Ben van de Waals escapements (W40, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-dXJJ-aJ60), which works great. Now to figure out a ratchet mechanism to wind it. To be continued PS: sorry for the filming-through-a-vertical-mailbox-opening, but my phone was the quickest way to get a quick video and I still don't know how to use it properly If anyone can tell me how to change the aspect ratio on the iPhone, let me know.
  20. I noticed that: you wind it up and it releases insanely fast. I need to figure out to regulate it a bit...
  21. Darn, I had the same idea... There's a lot of LEGO escapements online, see e.g. this collection by Ben van de Waal. I never built one, but appears that tuning has to be done carefully... I'm curious to see how your idea will work out. If it works as you hope, it would seem to be a very robust solution
  22. I was convinced I had a pull-back motor. Turns out I do, but it's a different one. Is there a particular difference between them? I assume either is allowed...
  23. My apologies, I didn't mean it to be in an unfriendly manner.
  24. Either don't make the rule, or be consistent...
  25. I found this article that I think explains it really well. Apparently, the so called Bridge Formula seems to be the root cause for all those wacky configurations you see. But the axle-back configuration is apparently preferable in states that allow it, mainly due to higher loading of the front axle and reduced turning radius.
