Technic Parts Slowly Disappearing
5imon replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I wouldn't be astonished about this. Thinking back to my childhood Technic days, I remember only 1x16s. And right, according to Bricklink, the 1x14 only came in 1997. So if you wanted to build something really large in the studded era, there had to be the 1x16. Later on the building style changed, so the large Technic models used liftarms, and for smaller models from other themes, the 1x14 was long enough. BTW, the 1x14 probably having a newer mold than the old 1x16, it might be much cheaper to produce and therefore preferred by the set designers. -
Wow, cool shapes! I like all the odd angles, and how you combined Technic, studded and Bionicle parts. The photography with the water and the rust also adds to the presentation.

I doubt that any kind of ball-joint or other "poseable" connection will hold up against the size and weight you're planning to put on. (But then I'm not much into poseable figures, so I might be wrong) For something this big, I'd rather try and go for a solution with self-locking movement (like worm screw and gear) that will be posed by turning a little knob or something similar.

Very simple explanation: after using 4 regular 24T gears for the tracks, my stock of these was exhausted. So I had to use the clutch. But, as I wrote, the final version was changed to 12T + 36T, more efficient and without slip...

This is another MOC I'd like to present as a part of my introduction here on Eurobricks. As my current work is still very much in a WIP state (but should be presentable very soon), it's another older model that I made in September/October 2011. As a long time Citroën aficionado, my favourite car maker was of course one of the first subjects I tried when going back into LEGO. One fascinating type of vehicles Citroën made in the '20s and '30s are half-tracked vehicles. Based on their normal production cars, they featured a relatively classic front end, while the rear wheels were replaced by tracks. Besides being used in snowy areas as buses or snowploughs, as agricultural or military vehicles, the most famous purpose of these cars were the expeditions Citroën undertook in those years. They led deep into the African or Asian continent where no vehicle has been before, sometimes crossing mountains where the cars had to be disassembled and carried over some dangerous passages. The model for my MOC was a 10HP type which was used for the crossing of Sahara in 1922/23. Pictures and more info (in French!) can be found here: http://passioncitro....e-22590275.html The goal for this build was to include the following: - fake engine with transmission to the rear tracks - front pendular axle with steering (via steering wheel) - tracks with suspension - realistic bodywork - scale given by the wheels from 8258 (used as front wheels) Later I included also an XL motor for driving the tracks, as the behaviour of the tracks on smooth floor was very unsatisfactory when the car was pushed. Some views of the finished vehicle: This is how the chassis looks without the body: The transmission from the motor to the driveshaft was later changed from 8T-8T-24T to 12T-36T. This shot shows a bit better how the steering and pendular axle work (on an older version of the chassis): The two movements are independent of each other, of course. Having no remote control at the time, I placed a switch between the battery box and the motor which I could take out of the car on its cable. This way, it was much easier to control the car than with fidgeting on the battery box switch: Of course I have disassembled the MOC long time ago, as I was pursuing other projects. However, the idea is still in my head to make an improved version of it with the more parts and experience I have now. I still like the front end a lot, including the mixed studless/studded building style of the front body. For me, it somehow reflects the look of these vehicles which always had an improvised touch. What I'd entirely revise are the tracks. The suspension is somewhat quirky and very far from the original. Also, the tracks are really not up to their job, and I'd use rubber tracks for better adhesion. Then I'd also add some more detail to the rear body, as it was rather plain looking. Plus a remote control for driving and steering. More pictures and some (low quality) videos are on my Bricksafe page: http://bricksafe.com...n 10HP Kegresse

If you look at the forum here, you see a lot of ideas. I'm sure the designers at LEGO are not less creative than the people here. But I agree with m0dulo, the question is which of the ideas is suitable for the mass market (and, especially, for children, and not for us AFOLs here). When I remember back as a child, it was always the big car or construction machinery sets that I found most interesting. And what my brothers and me mostly built were cars, besides the occasional little town (with enough streets to display a nice bunch of cars, of course ;-).

Now that you write it, Nalyd997 and Mikuri, I can see that it's of coure a separate axle. I suspect it's the remains of a poor vehicle the Road Warrior has just devoured ;-)- 19 replies

Way over the top, indeed. Although I'm rather a kind of sober and rational guy, I kind of like it! I'm looking forward to see the body. When looking at the pictures, I just wondered what the extension of the front axle is for. Looks like you're going to add some powered function there?- 19 replies

1H2015 Video Reviews
5imon replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I just spotted the arctic vehicle on Toys'R'Us Switzerland. It's ready for pre-order (what I will most probably do) and due to ship on Dec. 17th. Hope they can keep their promise and I'll have something great to build over the holidays. -
The new banner height is nice, the "old" banners in the theme forums now look very narrow in comparison. Since it scrolls away, I think the height should be no problem. For being in an EURObrick forum, the banner looks a bit too american for my taste (however nicely made). But I understand the forum is in no way limited to Europe, and it's really hard to please all the southern, northern, western and eastern hemispheres. (4 hemispheres... strange sphere we have here)

Rear wheel drive cars with longitudinally placed engines often also have inline 6 cylinder engines (although Mercedes switched to V6 some years ago). For transversal engines, inline 6 is normally too long.

Toolcat 5600

I first had to google what a Toolcat is. Looks like an interesting vehicle with lots of functions for us Technic builders to reproduce. Looking forward to the first pictures... -
6x6 Offroad Truck "Modular"

Of course I know where to get the pieces ;-) I was more joking about the expenses it will generate, as with every project I build... -

Another must-build MOC on my list... *sigh* Where do I get all those parts? And the time? -

Yeah, shorter steering links, I'm in! But where are the compact CV or universal joints to go with them? -

I guess that with the chamfer and the old diameter, the plastic would just have become too thin and fragile. But it's a pity nonetheless. For my currently planned projects I'll certainly stick to the "old" parts as I seldom have problems with the half-stud offset. Yes! As a color lover, this is the big plus of this Technic wave. I'll probably buy those lime wheels on Bricklink. I'm still hesitating to go into medium blue or bright green, though. -

BIGGER?!?! I'm still waiting for the smaller ones, so also small scale models can have their engnes with more than 1 or 2 cylinders... Contrary to Sariel's warning (in the video), I think that green and bright green go well together, so why not? I woudn't mix the two colors in the car's body, though. -

Great reviews! I like your style with the text, so I can look at them without sound. Also they are very structured (and not too long) which make them a pleasure to watch. Although you pointed out some flaws in the Arctic Vehicle's design, I'm definitely gonna have it. The parts list (in orange!) is just too great. And some of the useful new parts as well. Not sure about the Le Mans car... I like bright green very much, but with this being the only Technic set in this color, I'm hesitating. Maybe I'll have to see first what the future will bring. More bright green sets with different parts? -
[MOC] Moon Buggy
5imon replied to Hedgie's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Always nice to see old set recreated with modern techniques and parts. This one looks really awesome! I think it captures the proportions of the original very well while still looking like a modern set. I'll probably build it, however I'll have to make a two-coloured body since I don't have all the parts in the same colour. -
Single Book Building Instructions
5imon replied to Mowikan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I haven't had one of the new books yet. I think it all depends on how easy they are to keep open. If they are of better quality than the old books, then I'm in. However, I agree with miguev: since my desktop is already quite cluttered when I'm building, I'd prefer useable PDF instructions on my screen. But if the new book is rigis enough to stand in front of the screen, it's about the same. -
I can imagine that sometimes it's easier to assemble when you don't have to slide in a very long axle in a complex construction. Or if you put in the axle in an early building stage and it's in the way afterwards. Another explanation might be that it reduces the variety of different parts in the set and thus saves cost for TLG.

What's the deal with Black?
5imon replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think it was mentioned several times: everyone has lots of it, there are almost all parts available (if you don't want to build with 19L flex axles), and then there's the hole topic. The same goes with red supercars: connectors, liftarms, panels, flex axles: everything is there. I think only white could come close, but many parts are much rarer. I personally like orange and white a lot (so @BlackOmega63, stay away from my parts on Bricklink! ;-), but in orange it's not always easy to find the right parts. The situation is better since the release of the Unimog and some smaller sets afterwards, and I expect further improvement with the Arctic Vehicle. But some parts are still unavailable or make you a poor man. I'd also build more in dark bluish grey, but there are not many panels I could use.
