I don't think it's far-fetched at all to understand why there is confusion between Lion/Crusader/Leo. Crusaders came first, and used a Lion symbol on their shields, and its just evolved since then. They've clearly all used VERY similar inspiration for the faction designs...so lots of people tend to lump them together (rightfully so).

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 15 Rumors and Discussion
thetang22 replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Depends on the audience and context. The word by itself doesn't actually have an offensive meaning. It's basically just "Native American woman"...which has been used appropriately here. -
Latest CMF series impact on Historic themes
thetang22 replied to SirBlake's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I'd say it's a pretty good series overall, and a decent amount of stuff that could be used for Castle/Fantasy. -
If your point has to do with the part about how there is no neutral place to conduct a vote...I got it. I had a much bigger response that I cut back for one big reason: this topic really doesn't matter. It's not as though this particular thread is anything official...so you arguing to add Nexo or me arguing against it really is kind of a waste. Your viewpoint came from a poll from another forum sub-section....my viewpoint came from the case that Nexo (as far as this site is concerned) has been moved away from the Castle (history) section...so putting forth effort to include it back in topics related to the history section seems counter productive.
-
And......context is EVERYTHING. Seeing as how far from the "Castle" mold the Nexo Knights sets are, I'm not sure I'd put a whole lot of stock in the designer's opinion on the matter. That isn't an insult. The sets are designed well enough for their intended audience...but the intended audience isn't fans of traditional Castle.
-
Location, location, location. It's easy to get the answer you intend if you rig the poll. Place the poll in the Castle forum, and you'll likely get a different answer.

I don't mean this as a personal attack to anyone, so please don't anyone take it this way....but I have never seen ANY hobby forum I've ever frequented be even 1/2 as anal about people staying on topic as Eurobricks. I'm talking about hobby sites such as miniature painting, board gaming, video games, guitars, wood working.... A wide range, and yet this is the only site that is a stickler about it. Other sites typically let off-topic stuff run it's course, unless they get mean, but here....it's treated like some big offense. Eurobricks is a great site overall...but man, the general attitude towards discussions veering off-topic is a bit over the top.

Aanchir, I believe the argument comes from the idea of children being hit with Sensory overload these days to the point that if a new toy doesn't have lasers and gadgets on it, they can't even process the idea of it being "fun" because it seems so simple. That idea then translates over to something like Nexo Knights....where instead of simply giving them a well-designed traditional Castle theme with some interesting concepts, they need to "Sensory-Overload" it, so that kids these days can process it, because the kids have a hard time using simpler toys once they start playing with video games, iPads, etc.... "Dumb'ing it down" may or may not be a great way of labeling it....but there is something going on here. Dumbing it down could be applicable because the kids have to be given all these extra "crutches" for it to seem fun (Lasers and gadgets, etc...). Yes, this is similar to older generations complaining about the younger generations' toys compared to what they had when they were younger. However, there has been quite a bit of valid research done on the "Sensory Overload" in young kids today, and themes like Nexo Knights seem to be an extension of that.

Definitely better. A little photo editing can take a so-so picture a long way. I like the unusual use of the dark blue bricks reversed along the side of the base.

I think it's probably a nice looking fig, but the lighting issue I mentioned earlier is still a concern. It may look good from the way you are viewing it, but you HAVE to be viewing it from an angle that isn't standard. For what it's worth, I'm a professional graphic designer, and I can tell you right now the lighting isn't doing it any favors. I can tell from where the light reflections are the light comes from the back...casting a shadow on the front. I've viewed it on 2 different screens, and the same issue applies on both. It's a neat fig, but you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't get a photo with better lighting. I've been in the display miniature hobby for 15-20 years, and bad lighting can totally screw over the judging of an otherwise nice figurine. It's a shame too, because it looks like it is probably a nice looking figure, but without a better picture, it would be hard to really judge it as such.
-
I'd like to give a more thorough reply...but unfortunately I can't. The picture is too dark. It appears as though your primary light source is coming from behind the figure, which is putting most of the front in shadow. Retaking the photo with the light source being from the front will improve the viewing experience, which I'd highly recommend if you are submitting this for a competition.

Opaque colors on clear water slide decals
thetang22 posted a topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I'm trying to find some info on this. I've heard it can be done, but I'm not having much luck finding details. I've tried searching for a variety of relevant things in the search bar...but nothing of substance is coming up. I think I heard of a German guy who can do this, but was hoping there might be an option(s) in the US to avoid the hassles of international shipping. I need to get light colors onto a darker torso, and I don't like the way stickers or printed paper look. Thanks for any help regarding potential services, or even if there's a process I'm not considering. -
Brickforge's Brick to the Future project
thetang22 replied to slopemodified's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Kickstarter itself is more than trustworthy. They have been involved with what I assume as thousands and thousands of projects over the years. Kickstarter really isn't anything to worry about....because all they do is provide the platform to run a campaign, and have done so successfully. The thing you need to watch out for is the developer companies themselves....the ones running the campaign. Brickforge is a very reputable company. The only thing I'd stress you do is double check what the shipping process/cost will be. I see you are in Australia, so shipping may be a bit pricey (but you are probably used to that with international orders). -
Captain Dee - your thoughts sparked an idea: A medieval Castle theme that is focused on a village instead of the castle. The overlying theme of the set could be a village that gets raided by <insert whatever bad guys necessary>. Instead of the Castle Knights coming to save the day...the villagers defend themselves. Here's the catch...each of the characters has dual identities. - the Blacksmith creates weapons/armor by day...but when his village is attacked....he suits up into his warrior gear. - the Alchemist runs a potion shop by day...but turns into a bad@$$ wizard when the need arises. - the Hunter provides food for the village, however....he suits up into his bullseye archer suit when the raiders come Etc... with more workaday professions turning into heroes when the village is attacked. Each set could be a different building/profession, along with some form of Raider. Put all the sets together and you come up with a whole medieval village, with a combination of regular villagers, as well as their heroic alter-egos.

Chima and Ninjago make up the bulk of the clearance rack at my local stores. LoTR/Hobbit saw their fair share of clearance rack attendance too, but not nearly as much as Chima/Ninjago.

Very nice. I love waterfalls, and it's not often you see one of any significant size done for in Legos.

Perhaps Gauntlet might play some part...and if that's the case, would help balance out Nexo Knights taking the place of traditional Castle/Fantasy. Seriously...had Nexo Knights just come out at the same time as Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit...the vitriol wouldn't be nearly as bad. At least there would have been something.
-
I hope that's not the case. I saw the Dimensions stuff recently at the store. It's got a REALLY high price tag if you are only interested in it for the Lego pieces. It has the artificially increased price tag due to the video game tie-in....something I have no interest in.

Did you consider the reason girls don't play with more minifigures (assuming your claim is right) is due to the fact most sets through Lego's first few decades really did cater more towards themes and concepts that boys traditionally like more than girls? If they had come out with Friends, Disney Princesses, and Elves back in the 80s and 90s using regular minifigures....I don't think there'd be any issue with minifigures being seen as favoring one gender over the other. Instead, we got almost exclusive set concepts that were catered to boys. Even themes that you'd think would be gender neutral like City frequently took the cops vs criminals route...or race cars, etc... Things that boys more traditionally like. Then the sets like Castle and Pirates also focused on the combat elements of those themes....yet again concepts traditionally more catered to boys. See, the minifigures by themselves aren't catered to boys....they've just traditionally been in set designs that were in the early history of Lego. As an attempt to cater to more traditional girl favored material...Lego created the new ranges mentioned above. The mini-dolls as a nod to other "doll" like toys that girls traditionally play with....as well as color schemes traditonally favored by girls. Aanchir, it sorta felt like you had an angsty, politically correct agenda when you replied to my post. I get there is a huge movement in the US (and around the world to a lesser extent) to be politically correct...and in this case reassure little kids they can like whatever they want/not fall into gender stereotypes. While that's all noble....the reality is, based on tradition....most little girls like dolls. Most little girls like pink and purple. Most little girls aren't fascinated by combat. I hope you don't get offended by these ideas. Even though it goes against the politically correct agenda....it's true.

Sorta feels like an impressionistic painting.

I don't even need the next line to be "dark". I just want something that's good medieval design. Fantasy. Fairy tale. Gothic. Any of those would be acceptable to me, so long as they were thoughtfully done, and not too junior'ized, or used mini-dolls. Heck, even the new Elves sets have got quite a few good things going on it them, despite the mini-dolls and excessive "little girl" stylizing they are going for.

I still get baffled at the argument that Lego Castle had to be either Castle 2013, or Nexo Knights. Since 2013 wasn't a runaway success, that justifies Nexo Knights. As if those were the ONLY interpretations Lego Castle could have taken... I can only hope that if Nexo Knights is around for years, they will at least release a few sets that cater to the medieval aspects of the theme, rather than everything being jet packs and hover boards.

I agree with you x105Black. I've always viewed all the factions through the years to be reinterpretations of the same existing factions that existed in the early days. I justified it by thinking of them as the same faction from different points in the history of Lego Castle, or by being sub-divisions of the same bigger faction (such as with the Dragons and Lions having several re-imaginings).
