Has it dawned on any of us that the discussion lately about these 1/10 supercars is about SHAPE and SCALE rather than function? Like many folks love it for these two qualities and these two qualities only. While acknowledging there really are no functions (outside of the most basic suspension and steering, working fake engine). Similar discussion regarding 42096. How did we get here??? Throw me into the "what do these sets have to do with Technic" group. I simply don't get it. I was gifted 42096 and I so wanted to return it. I ended up using it as a parts pack but as a set it was completely vacuous.....

[MOC] BMW X3
nerdsforprez replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Way to create a moc with the Landrover wheels. Not many out there. The front grill sure is creative. I think it captures to front well. Not too sure about the back wheel arches though. Fairly larger gap between those two side panels -

just gonna post the same thing. oh well, i guess the cool thing os we get new tires -
Very thorough and well-executed response. I fear the first two directly relate to the OP's initial concerns (if I am not mistaken, or at least one of the first responses) in that "all the good ideas are taken." I am not sure if this is true, but I get that it can sometimes FEEL true... if you get my meaning. Also, I can see how TLG introducing new parts can be de-motivating, and at least IMO very much calls into question this idea of Lego-purism. But at the same time, doesn't new parts open a whole new book of challenges? I mean, are there not some parts (like wave selector, or new frame piece) that open up a whole new world of possibilities?

Forgive me if this has been answered before, and also for not taking the time to look up the exact rules on this sort of thing.... but I thought we were not supposed to post about non-Lego sets/elements. I am not complaining. I want to know for my own selfish reasons. I have just purchased CADA's version of the Centenario and I am very pleased with the quality I see. Technically its a holiday gift from my wife so "technically" I am not supposed to see it yet... but I am pleased. I wanted to discuss it, but have been refraining b/c I thought no non-Lego speak was the rule here.

Correct. At least not in terms of whether folks here on EB can handle it or not. On whether criticism on this site is too harsh and therefore scares some folks away from posting, criticism vs. no criticism certainly has some merit to the discussion. But on whether or not folks can handle criticism on this site or not - this is an issue that keeps coming up again and again and again and again. @milan warned me before not to make things personal so I will not. I will keep it focused on an idea; the idea that EB members can't take criticism. I think it is an idea that needs to be defended. It was not a focus on this discussion until this statement. And I quote: "You can't criticize on EB because then EB explodes. Trust me, I've tried." This is an indictment against the EB community and I for one am angered by it. It insinuates that we are all a bunch of sissies. Does any one else feel the same? If I am alone here... I will shut-up, but if it angers others I would like to also hear from them. Of course there are some outliers. Of course there are some instances where this applies. But I think they are definitely exceptions to the rule and not rules themselves. We literally have thousands of positive examples, finished products and WIPs where there is positive interaction between creators of projects and those leaving feedback to very few who show an oversensitivity to any criticism. And this perception of "trust me I have tried" seems to me flawed. I do not know where the poster of this comment gets this perception, but I believe it stems from a conversation where he literally tells the builder his creation hurts his eyes. Not to mention a litany of other responses that are just outright insulting. When others in the forum try to point out the distinction of insults versus criticism the poster then threatens to leave the community. Later he accuses someone of breaking an embargo date with no data or hard evidence whatsoever. Example after example of this behavior (but, to be fair, many many more positive examples of constructive posting behavior). I believe this is the instance, among others, that this flawed perception is coming from. I encourage others to view the perception that EB members can't take criticism with skepticism. Perhaps I am wrong. But it appears to me that it is a baseless perception and a false narrative disseminated by a select few who do not know the difference between insults and criticism and have ben called on it in the past. If there is any truth to this, I recommend we try to limit derailing this and other threads with this false narrative and misguided logic.

So the very first image is not showing up for me. I now see your target machine is a little different than the one i had in mind. Still, here is a version, tracked with clamshell buckets instead of shovel by one of our own ( or at least used to be part of the forum). years ago i attempted this myself on Antos smaller excavator. Here is the thread. pics are gone because MOCpages died but of i can find the original ones ill put them up here. I got things to work fine but could not figure out how to manage the pneumatic hoses.

Understood. But, and I mean this respectfully, I think this has much less to do with pocking between two members but but more about debating between two ideas. And that is exactly what the forum is for. Or at least I think so. One idea says that folks here on EB can't take criticism. Other ideas says they can - just don't do well with insults. They are different things. And the resolving which is more accurate, again IMO, is directly related to the post. One central idea of why we see less posting on the EB Technic forum is because idea number one is accurate. I don't see that as the case.... thats all.

I'm relaxed Nothing is wrong with it man, its just not needed IMO. Plus a bad idea. It seems to swing too far the opposite way. Borders enabling. To your point, folks should be able to take criticism. If they can't that is on them. And if they can't, again to your point I think there is something much more significant going on, like they shouldn't be on the site anyways (age or maturity problem). Do we really want to create a venue where folks can post something and not be criticized for it? Where else on the WWW would that apply? What sort of example would we be establishing....especially if we suspect underage users.... So did I. And I am the critic here of Sariel's post. I had no problem with him trying to help. But again, folks need to be intellectually honest here. It probably appears as I am attacking Sariel. I am not. Help all you want, and criticize all you want. Just don't ridicule or insult. Its real easy guys. That was the only point I was trying to make. Sariel's first comments of hurting his eyes, etc....those were insults. Had nothing to do with offering help. And to howitzer's credit, he didn't even mind. Nonetheless it is not needed. No one is calling for rainbows, unicorns, etc. - those are all sariel's words, no one elses.

This comes right when we had a post that queried if we have ran out of good ideas for Technic models. Great pick! I actually tried to do this a few years back. My problem was with hose control because I was using pneumatics. I will post pics when I have the chance. I do know this was done successfully a while back by another user. Forgot their name. But the only problem was the end shovel/bucket was manual, which I think negates the true challenge of the project...

Lets not go for the bait anymore. Honestly. I think @Sariel is trying to be cute here. No one in their right mind would think they can post something without it being criticized. Or at least they shouldn't. I for one don't see this so called issue of folks not being able to talk criticism. I see folks on here taking it extremely well. 90% or so of folks post something, and when are criticized do just fine with it. The dichotomy we are discussing is not criticism versus no criticism, but criticism versus insults. Criticisms are welcome and needed to evolve, no one really argues that. Insults are not. Its a simple distinction guys. Please, lets not keep confusing the two. No one need roses, or flowers, unicorns or bunnies. People can be blunt, harsh, direct, etc. Just no insults. It really is not that hard. Saying things like someone's model "hurts my eyes" is an insult. I don't think we need to change anything about the forum based on a false dichotomy I am not sure even exists......

Back on point for me.... I like that some have offered perhaps making a subforum for beginners or more hobby-enthusiasts rather than those that are experienced or tailored towards excellence. I think the idea is a good one, but not sure it is needed. I think there are other forums or avenues for that. As others have pointed out, youtube or FB are among these. MOCpages used to be totally geared towards this, but sadly it died. I do think (and I will point the finger at myself here a little) some burden lies on the poster to be aware of the forum he or she is submitting to . I agree that EB is more of an elitist forum designed for showcasing some of the best work that is out there. If I am posting something, I need to be aware of this and am responsible for awareness of where I fall on the continuum of building; my skill-set and motive for building. For example, I work in a busy hospital. I put in long hours and strive for excellence with the patients I treat. At the end of the day, I simply do not have it in the tank to come home and strive for such excellence in my hobby. I build to de-stress. I build to have fun. I build like I play football with my kids. If they mess up, I am not going to rip them to shreds. I may make some recommendation about the routes they run, or throw the ball, but any such comments will be given with the end goal in mind, meaning to have fun and build relationships. If I have to bite my tongue a little to achieve this end, so be it. When I built in the past I didn't showcase models in some pursuit of excellence. I showcased with a light-hearted, hobby-like mentality. If I were to share on this forum, (and I have in the past), but knowing that this is more of an elitist forum and my model were to get ripped to shreds well then I feel at least some of the onus should fall on me for submitting on something that I had no business submitting to in the first place. To @sariel's and others POV, to absolve a poster from any responsibility of awareness to the forum they are submitting to is not the answer either.....

Let's debate without getting snarky. No need for this. I respect your work a great deal and honestly am quite surprised you are kicking so much against the pricks here. Such a brilliant mind completely incapable of seeing the irony here. You are one of the worst about taking constructive feedback about your own work. I am not the only one to point these things out about your posts. These have been pointed out time and time again by others. I will PM, not going to bog down the post more here.

I have actually thought about this Jim. I mean, I think every enterprise, hobby, discipline, etc. needs foundational characters. I have also been around nearly a decade. I know that some of my original inspirations were Blakbird, Crowkillers, Sariel, and others. I loved keeping up with their work. But their activity has waned in the last couple of years. Others are up and coming, some sort of replacements if you will, but I wonder if the feeling of the "good ol days" is waning for some of us old timers. I have at least had this thought. That is not what has caused my waning activity (mostly due to huge life changes, I am sure I will become more active once I finish house, etc.) but I recognize the thought. At least for me. Not sure if others have felt the same?

Cause? Interesting choice of words. Not sure it is correct usage though. Take it from the psychologist in the bunch, the fact that you feel you have to do a facepalm because of what someone posts about a HOBBY says a lot more about you than anything else. Not everyone feels that way Sariel. Your posts just bleed transparency of your need to correct others. It's almost like the universe is thrown off kilter or something (in your eyes) if you see something wrong. I mean, your disgust sensitivity is off-the-charts man.

Racism is about race and ethnicity. This is nothing like that. It is a type of stereotype though, perhaps that is what you meant. Something subtle, but in todays day and age the distinction really means something. Regarding folks who think that Technic is not "real" Lego - that is up to them, but no need to fall for it. There are many who actually lump "Lego" into some self-proclaimed categories. It is actually very silly. Makes you chuckle kind of silly. Even folks who argue Lego is for deconstructing and rebuilding into something else... its all silliness. That is their preference, but certainly not something to limit Lego to. The mantra the Lego founder had when he created the company and product was to "play well." How silly it is for any one person to dictate what it means to another person to "play well." Let's not fall for that type of silliness.

There has been some critique from some of our better builders about the quality of responses, not quantity. I get that it is no fun to get 0 response on a post, but at the same time I think there is some truth behind the complaint that there is a lot of "zero calories" responses. Responses such as "great job" and "I love it" without detailing what you love or improvements really don't offer much. We all know that many of us (occasionally, myself included) will just look at the picts of a MOC and not even bother, at least not seriously, with seeing the video or paying attention to the narrative. I know personally this is one of the many reasons why my activity has waned the last couple of years. I have tried to give more substantive responses rather than fluff. But giving a good, detailed response takes time and energy. Which obviously is difficult. Perhaps this is not the right road to take though. A response with little calories, is a response nonetheless, and perhaps is better than nothing at all. I dunno. Lol... we have dealt with this before. Please remember that folks who have responded in the past will read this, and actually remember old posts, and see through the craftiness here. Jim said it well enough. Criticism does not need to be meanspirited. Folks have already evaluated some of your past "criticism" weighed and measured it, and well, we all know the outcome.

Are fraudulent companies opening the way?
nerdsforprez replied to astral brick's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Yes, where the pirating companies loose me is not in the copying of the brick, but in the pirating of the actual sets themselves. -

Agree with others there is a lot to unpack here. Without condoning the behavior of these pirating companies, I will say that I think change is in the air and if TLG does not evolve or adapt some if its policies, it may lose a fair share of the market it holds. And I am not sure the whole high and mighty absolutist perspective of Lego absolute ownership over plastic bricks holds now, and certainly not until the end of time. Interpretation: a free market would eventually stumble upon something so similar INDEPENDENT of Lego that I don't think they can claim ownership over the idea of plastic bricks from now until forever. An alternative perspective may be that pirating companies are just ahead of their time. Even pharmaceutical patients run our after a decade or so. And these pirating companies are demonstrating that is can be done soooo much cheaper. Perhaps not at the same quality, but there are some really good clone products out there. -
No problem. Im interested in anything cool. Not just technic sets in boxes. Just wanted to let you know there are interested parties out there in buying sets.
