  1. Indeed. Mixed as my feelings currently are, I can't deny that it's a techincally impressive wave of sets. I just hope that 2017 manages to marry the best of both its predecessors. EDIT: Blargh, got the wrong year.
  2. Could someone with review copies please take photos of the new Toa (Onua aside, obviously) with their 2015 torso-armor? I'm curious as to how they look without all the misguided greebling.
  3. Such a shame. Gali, Master of Water is the sort of set you'd point to in order to show what the new BIONICLE is capable of. This... Gives me Gali Mistika vibes. Tahu, Uniter of Fire, is a troubled set, but at least it doesn't fall prey to the "generic BIONICLE, bleh"-trap that this does.
  4. Canon is a rather dubious, mercurial concept, but assuming that you mean "is Gen1 part of the world of Gen2," the answer would seem to be "No." To elaborate, Makuta, while still the villain, is a Mask-Maker, with a brother named Ekimu. The original Toa exist, but need golden masks to use any of their powers, and Lewa controls plants, as well as air. There is a Mask of Time, somehow used to summon the Toa (Lyichir's hypothesis that it was used to speed up the requisite planetary conjunction is the best I've seen,) about which we know tantalizingly little. Speaking of which, Time is a major theme. The only links to Gen1, aside from the reused characters, are a bunch of Vahi-shapes hidden in the Spring animations and the Island of Mata Nui popping up on a preliminary poster (on the Mask of Control's forhead.)
  5. Yeah. 4Chan... when has 4Chan provided genuine leaks?
  6. XD That sounds much more entertaining, at least.
  7. It's been ages since I read any of Hapka's three books, but it definitely wasn't that way with Farshtey, at least not overtly. Of all the criticisms one might level at him, I don't think that's one of them. Windham seems to have trouble deciding what reading level he's writing for, which creates an oddly stilted quality.
  8. Schizophrenic, clumsy prose-Gaaaaaaahh! It's as if a tongue-twister wormed itself, xenomorph-like, into a sober sentence.
  9. This. The problem isn't, I think, necessarily with using one texture where a simpler one would have done, but with ignoring a piece's texture in the interest of a mosaic-whole. Creating a silhouette, as it were. Obviously, it is possible for textures to clash in other ways, but that's nothing to do with complexity, per se.
  10. I'm actually rather fond of what I've seen on DA, but that's hardly the cream of the crop, IMO. Technically impressive? Yes. Aesthetically pleasing? No. It manages to be rather gross.
  11. Onua looks fantastic. As with this year, he looks to be a probable highlight of the wave. He's a distinct yet recognizable iteration of the same character. I don't see the problem with the torso. No one complained about half of this year's Toa or two-thirds of the Protectors having the same torso, did they? It helps to distinguish 2016's Onua from his 2015 counterpart. He looks quite distinct from the rest of the Uniters.
  12. Well, I won't say that's how it necessarily should be, but it's infinitely preferable to having too little distinction between iterations. Tahu, yeah, though I think the insufficiently-covered knees and the gappy neck carry a good deal of the blame. Kopaka, I'm not seeing the problem with. His two versions have different aesthetics, but both hang together rather well. One looks like he'd be at home in Legends of Zelda, the other in Samus Aran.
  13. Is this old news that I somehow managed to miss? Regardless, congrats! I'll need to remember to MOC a Toa of Fish Knives when the occasion comes! =P
  14. Those make me oddly nostalgic. You see, when I first saw the Turaga, at the age of five, I assumed that they were keychain miniatures of the Toa. Not being able to read led to some interesting assumptions, on my part. I also initially thought that the Bohrok were a new kind of Toa. =P Re the Onua MOC: Quite cool. I'm particularly enamored of that Earth Villager. If I can get hold of those shoulderplates, I might try to recreate him.
  15. Re Melum: The lack of a tail is not the sole difference between him and Terak. He's also got a different function. Whereas Terak, as far as I can tell, lunges, Melum bear hugs.
  16. It's not even a placeholder, since nothing replaced it. The Toa's masks all have Nuva symbols, so I suppose the MoC might originally have had Mata Nui as a corresponding callback.
  17. Coolio! Though I'm disappointed to see that the posing hasn't improved much from the prelims, sill as that might sound. This year's sets were posed much more dynamically. It doesn't affect me, much, but I could see it making a dent in sales. I appreciate that the staffs are part of the problem, but you still think there'd be a better way. Gali's picture is the worst example of this. On another note, Lewa's mask is an intriguing blend of his 2001 Kanohi and his current mask. My favorite Toa are probably Onua (again) and Kopaka (in spite of his upper arms.) I'm having a much harder time picking my favorite creature. The Toa are wonderful, don't get me wrong, but these beasties benefit immensely from not being tethered to a humanoid template.
  18. For Pete's sake, that's EB forcing its views on others? It's a joke, plain and simple. The vast majority of LEGO fans abhor Megablocks, and the swear-filter humorously reflects that fact. There are far more effective methods of thought-control. Again, not something I've seen in much evidence on EB. I'm sure it happens. We humans are a biased lot. But EB, from what I've seen, is quite good in that respect. I've seen too many differences of opinion to bear out what you've said.
  19. I like! i mean we got these
  20. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Deviant Art fans. What I've seen of their work has blown me away. It deserves to be more publicized than it is, methinks. @One Very Agile Cat While I agree that folks here seem to have shifted their opinions considerably on Technic mixed with CCBS (as is their prerogative,) I'm rather puzzled by your assertion that Eurobricks is a hive of censorship and conformity. Admittedly, I mostly use the Action Figures forum, but I have never seen a moderator silence a view which didn't tow the party line (which is non-existent here, as far I can tell.) If you're going to make such drastic allegations, please elaborate a great deal.
  21. Of course, we saw the final MoCr before we saw the animation version, so we didn't have the chance to be disappointed. I'm on the fence about the latest MoCo. I like the one we saw in September better. The current one isn't bad, but its does look far less dignified and ethereal, judging by the photos we have (which may well prove misleading.) It's funny, as the changes are subtle, but they conspire to significantly alter its demeanor. Hopefully it's not the final version. As for the animated version, while I like it, with its Nordic (or perhaps pseudo-Nordic) style (reminiscent of G1's Olmak) that rather fits the Anglo-Saxon vibe of Makuta's epithet. However, it is rather indistinct, and I can appreciate that extrapolating a physical object from it is a tricky task. The result was never bound to match up with our preconceptions of it.
  22. Charles Atlas torso! Arrrrrgh! That aside, I quite like this. It reminds me a bit of the Mines of Moria.
  23. Am I the only one dissatisfied with the winning entry? The horns are really cool, but on the whole it falls prey to the same problem that the winning BFTGM entry had, that of clashing textures filling a nice silhouette. The Mask of Hyper Plasma II has it to a lesser degree, fortunately not enough to ruin it.
  24. Mmm hmm. Not bad. Not bad at all. The only gripe I have is with Finn's headpiece, which falls squarely into Uncanny Valley territory. The colors are strong with these ones.
  25. Yes, but the reasons that you seem to think it would be a problem still apply, no? This is patently not true. The idea of alternate universes in Star Trek goes back to the Original Series, starting in "the Alternative Factor." The Terran Empire-alternate universe, introduced in "Mirror, Mirror" became a recurring feature of Deep Space Nine. Again, who cares? Is the universe somehow less appealing, because it's divergent? Are kids really going to lose any love for it for so abstract a reason? Also, said confirmation, was, I believe, only given in BZP's "Ask Greg" topic. That is to say, it's something that Farshtey said, not the story, and rather obscure, to boot. Besides, Greg prescribes to a sort of Word of Demigod, whereby what he says is an assumption, liable to change, ala his claim that time-travel in the MU was impossible, or instances where he forgets a previous answer and contradicts himself. Or are you saying that it would necessitate an explanation for when and how it diverged? In which case, I ask why there can't be other kinds of alternate universes, ala BZP's Expanded Mutltiverse They would (as they have already done) consult with him if they could, no doubt, but I don't imagine they'd despair if they couldn't. Heck, from what I've seen of the latest Ask Greg topic, some fans seem to remember the story's details better than he does (as is natural for these sort of things.) If fans can comprehend the BIONICLE canon, why can't the current story-team? Oh, I'm quite aware that some folks want a connection. I was wondering what made you think that they were a minority, when I had seen no evidence to suggest that. In all seriousness, understanding part of something does not require an understanding of the whole. If I want to keep a pet, I'll have to know how to ensure it survives happily, but I won't need to be an expert on its anatomy. When I see a cockatiel fly, I can appreciate that it is flying, whilst still wondering about the aerodynamics necessary for it to do so. Not every question about a thing needs to be answered, let alone at once. Again, look at the new Star Trek, with its Old Spock. Do you appreciate his part in the plot more for knowing about the Original Series? Of course! But does not being familiar with it ruin your enjoyment of the movie. I should hope not.
